The AAC officially names IMG Academy President/former Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti as its next commissioner. AAC Board Executive Committee Chair/ECU Chancellor Philp Rogers: “Tim Pernetti is the ideal leader to guide the American Athletic Conference through this pivotal time in college athletics. His perspective as a successful student-athlete, a respected and progressive director of athletics, and his demonstrated leadership, innovation, competitive spirit, and business acumen across a number of professional organizations make him uniquely suited to build on the success of Mike Aresco and steer the conference to a bright future.” Current AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco adds: “I have known Tim for a long time, and he is a superb choice to lead this conference. He has all the qualities and skills to advance the goals of the conference and take it to greater heights.” Pernetti will officially begin in June. (link)

The NCAA was scheduled to revisit its decision on whether to hold the first two rounds of the women’s hoops tournament at campus sites and to hold its second weekend games in two sites rather than four after the 2025 championships, but NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman believes they have enough data to consider the changes following this year’s tournament. "Given the trajectory of success we've experienced over the last couple years, I see no reason to wait to start that review. The governance structure has to approve [a review], but that is our ask coming out of this championship. I believe that will take place." In discussing this year’s tournament, Holzman says the issues it has faced – including mispainted three-point lines, the removal of a referee at halftime, Utah having to change hotels, and Notre Dame star Hannah Hidalgo missing several minutes after being forced to remove a nose ring she’d been wearing all season – are a series of isolated incidents rather than a result of the disparity in how the men’s and women’s tournaments are funded. The NCAA has since spent an additional $14M per year on the women's tournament since the release of the Kaplan Report, per a spokesperson. (link)

NC State’s men’s basketball Final Four run demonstrates the conference’s depth, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel, who notes 10 of the league’s 15 programs have made it to at least the Elite 8 since 2016 with six advancing to the Final Four. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells Teel: “To me, the most critical piece is our schools are prepared for the NCAA tournament because of the conference they play in. … The reality is, we’ve been undervalued, and we have to do something about that.” Phillips believes the selection committee should place greater emphasis on late-season play, noting that Pitt won 11 of its last 14 games this season and, in his opinion, deserved a spot in the NCAA Tournament. “Analytics and metrics have a place, but it also warrants a discussion about whether past performance, and how conferences have fared in the NCAA tournament, should be considered.” Phillips stops short of advocating for expanding March Madness but does support studies into the feasibility of growing the field. “How can you do it without undercutting what is the crown jewel of NCAA championships while still allowing access across the country?” (link)

The Knight Commission reiterates its call for the NCAA to provide “equal rewards for the success of women’s and men’s teams in the March Madness tournaments.” The commission, which first called for such a distribution as part of its proposed C.A.R.E. Model in 2021, acknowledges the NCAA recently announced it would explore awarding financial incentives for team success in the NCAA WBB Tournament with money from the $920M contract with ESPN but insists a “more urgent and far-reaching overhaul of the NCAA plan is long overdue.” Since the 2021 Kaplan Report, the commission notes the NCAA has awarded $340M to conferences and institutions for the tournament success of men’s basketball teams “over two revenue distribution cycles without any change to its discriminatory formula. The NCAA’s apparent plan to tie future financial incentives for the women’s basketball tournament success to an assigned value in its new multisport media contract falls well short of righting this longstanding inequity. As an educational non-profit, the NCAA has one revenue distribution plan for Division I institutions—not distribution plans for each sport pegged to commercial values and media contracts. With so many complex challenges facing college sports, fixing this inequity by providing equal incentives for athletics success for men’s and women’s teams should be a lay-up.” (link)

Fox’s 16-team College Basketball Crown is officially a go, per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who reports the tournament will take place in Las Vegas’ MGM Garden Arena and MGM Arena, beginning March 31, 2025, and run until April 6. AEG is a presenting sponsor, and games will air on both Fox and FS1. The field will feature schools that failed to qualify for the men’s NCAA Tournament with two squads each from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East receiving automatic bids. (link)

With so much at stake and the situation changing rapidly, JohnCanzano.com’s namesake believes the Pac-12 quickly “needs to formulate a plan and show the conference coaches and athletes the path.” Canzano adds: “I’m eager to see how this unfolds for Oregon State and Washington State in the next six to 12 months. The hope is that chaos in college athletics will trigger another round of realignment and give the schools better options. Is that a Pac-12 rebuild? Or is it OSU and WSU joining some other conference? There’s been optimism, but as one major conference commissioner told me in a phone call last week: ‘Hope isn’t a strategy.’ … Next season and the WCC has to be sold as a one-year thing followed by something better. And therein lies the crux of the problem – the conference itself isn’t ready to pick a path given the potential for more shifting sands.” (link)

Stephen F. Austin Interim AD/SWA Loree McCary and Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Wally Crittenden met with students last week to discuss a proposed fee that would support the athletic department. McCary explained the economic impact the athletic department has on the Nacogdoches community, which amounts to $146K and over 4,000 hours of volunteering. She also emphasized that the athletic fee is “something for the betterment of all SFA” and will “assist us to grow and do things in line with what the UT system does.” Crittenden focused on the economic impact SFA athletics has on campus, particularly with 348 non-scholarship student-athletes. “They may not sell tickets, but every single one of our sports has athletes who are part of those sports and are paying full tuition, fees, books, and expenses.” McCary also commented that most student-athletes stay on campus, and some even have meal plans, which helps the SFA economy. “We put revenues into our SFA economy, which then comes back to the university. Currently, across our social channels, the add value equivalency… is worth $1.2M.” A student vote on the fee is set for April 6. (link)

Memphis drew an average of 6,827 fans through the turnstiles at home men’s basketball games this season, down from the 7,458 in actual attendance in 2022-23. Under the terms of the school’s FedExForum lease agreement, the Tigers would have received a maximum payment of $800K from the Grizzlies if turnstile-count attendance averaged 10K or more. Instead, the university will get a yet-to-be-determined partial payment, according to the Commercial Appeal’s Jason Munz. Memphis’ average announced attendance this season was 12,276, up from 11,444 last year. Munz also notes if average attendance is below 6,000, Memphis gets nothing from the Grizzlies. Since 2004, that has happened only once (in 2017-18, Tubby Smith's final season as coach). If the average turnstile count is below 6,000 for two consecutive seasons, the Grizzlies have the option to terminate the school’s lease. (link)

The AAC has selected former Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti as its next commissioner, according to the AP’s Ralph Russo, who notes sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was still being finalized and no official announcement by the conference was scheduled yet. Several outlets previously reported the conference has zeroed in on Pernetti, who currently serves as the president of IMG Academy. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger broke the news yesterday evening. (link)

Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. tells the OU Daily that if the Norman City Council does not approve the proposed $1B entertainment district that would feature a new arena for OU athletics, then the university, alongside donors, would look to other cities to build an arena for which its basketball and women’s gymnastics teams would be anchor tenants and possibly the entertainment district as a whole. “I’m very hopeful and do everything I can to keep it here in Norman. But if this isn’t approved by the city council for whatever reason, then we’re going to be looking at other (cities), Oklahoma City, Moore, surrounding areas, and figure out where is there a group that wants to do this.” Harroz goes on to note that Norman has invested in OU in the past and needs to do so again. Harroz also says four variables must be solved in order to secure college sports’ long-term future: antitrust, complying with Title IX, settling the question of whether athletes are employees and ensuring that non-revenue-generating sports survive. “I think that a lot of people want to say, ‘Well, if you just fix NIL and the transfer portal, then your problems are solved.’ It's not. You’ve got to solve for all four of those. … Part of what we have to do is preserve college athletics and not just the revenue side, because the lifting of all women and supporting our Olympic teams is critical and it won’t happen with the market acting as the market.” (link)

Monday’s Iowa-LSU women’s basketball Elite 8 matchup brought in 12.3M viewers to ESPN to lead the way for the most-watched WBB Elite 8 on record. The game peaked at 16M. Meanwhile, Connecticut-USC averaged 6.7M viewers on ESPN and Oregon State-South Carolina averaged 3.1M and NC State-Texas averaged 2.5M on ABC. Overall, the games averaged 6.2M viewers, up 184% YoY. (link, link); The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch: “If you want some insane context, this viewership for Iowa-LSU number tops every World Series game in 2023 and all but one NBA Finals game in 2023. (link); SBJ’s Austin Karp adds the game also eclipsed the viewership numbers for the 10.4M who tuned in for the Purdue-Tennessee men's hoops Elite 8 matchup; the 9.5M viewers for the 2024 Golden Globes, and the 12.1M for the final round of the Masters last year. (link); ESPN also reports the WBB Sweet 16 was the most-watched on record, with Iowa-Colorado bringing in 6.9M viewers for ABC and LSU-UCLA bringing in 3.8M. On ESPN, Indiana-South Carolina drew 2.1M viewers while Duke-Connecticut brought in 2M. Overall, the Sweet 16 averaged 2.4M viewers, up 96% YoY. Auburn AD John Cohen says the Tigers are “in a very, very positive place right now” in regards to the next apparel sponsorship. “I think our fanbase (and) everyone connected with Auburn is going to be very pleased with where we are. We got a lot of input from student-athletes, we got a lot of input from fans, we got a lot of input from our coaches and staff members. Everyone across all the stakeholders of Auburn University. The influence of shoe companies on men’s basketball appears to be waning, according to Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel, who wonders if the “confluence of NIL, the FBI and the transfer portal combine[d] to finally break the decades-long stronghold Nike and Adidas had on college basketball?” One “connected basketball middle man” tells him it’s “nothing like it was. The shoe companies have become second fiddle to NIL thinking.” One college coach adds: “Way less influence than pre-NIL.” However, Wetzel goes on to acknowledge the sample size so far is small, and “it would be foolish to say the ‘blue bloods’ will never win again or dominate again. They still have massive resources and fanbases. They can and will adapt. And maybe this is just a blip, programs from major conferences to mid-majors who never had much of a chance at Final Fours before suddenly do. Barriers have come down. This is no longer about collecting top-10 recruits and pretending they all came because they were impressed with the campus architecture.” Ironically, as coaches continue to decry NIL and the transfer portal as a vehicle for the rich to get richer, Wetzel contends it’s been the other way around. “Roster construction is undoubtedly more chaotic. More players are making more money. Change is constant. Yet, was it somehow better when a few shoe companies had their fingers on the scale? Wasn’t that the rich staying richer?” (link)

+ Northwestern’s motion to dismiss the wrongful termination lawsuit brought by former Football HC Pat Fitzgerald was denied in Cook County circuit court. The case is set to go to trial in April 2025. Fitzgerald is seeking more than $130M in damages, and a statement from his attorneys reads, in part: “Because the entire motion to dismiss was denied today, our plan is clear and straightforward – we are going to move this case forward and expeditiously to trial. … We will take all steps necessary to pursue Coach Fitzgerald’s serious claims and to protect his rights, name and reputation.” (link)
+ The Louisville-focused 502 Circle has launched a campaign in support of new Men’s Basketball HC Pat Kelsey. The initiative is being spearheaded by a $1M matching commitment from Glow Brands co-owner Rick Kueber, and as of Tuesday afternoon fans had contributed $382K. Kelsey: “We’re all aware that there was a seismic shift in our industry in the last few years with the advent of name, image and likeness. From the very beginning I was a huge proponent of it. … There’s no question in my mind. This is America, this is enterprise, this is capitalism. The young men and young women who participate at a high level of collegiate athletics deserve their share. It’s the absolute lifeblood of a program at a really high level that has national championship aspirations.” (link)

Alabama State becomes the first DI HBCU to add a women’s flag football team, which will begin competition in the 2024-25 academic year. Hornets AD Jason Cable: “We look forward to doing our part at The Alabama State University to assist in growing the sport locally and regionally. We can't wait to see the impact of women's flag football as one of our sports offerings for the Hornet Nation's student-athletes. We're enthusiastic that Alabama State University is breaking new ground by launching a highly competitive women's flag football program. The University recognizes the immense interest in women's flag football at the collegiate level and is proud to offer its students a valuable opportunity to excel in the sport.” President Quinton Ross adds: “Adding this program to our institution allows Alabama State University to align its sports offerings to the global standard and to the future of an emerging sport. The addition of women's flag football will provide both current and incoming students a valuable opportunity to further their education while participating on the gridiron." (link)

The Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada - home of the Big West’s postseason hoops events - is changing its name to Lee’s Family Forum just two years after its opening. Daps has already worked with several student-athletes set to compete in this week’s men’s Final Four, including NC State’s DJ Burns, Purdue’s Zach Edey, Alabama’s Mark Sears and Connecticut’s Alex Karaban. Daps Co-Founder Jake Klores tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that “what we're building is the technology, the toolkit, to enable athletes to run their direct-to-fan businesses. We're in the middle of a really significant shift in fandom, where kids are growing up now, more so than ever, [as] superfans of individual athletes as opposed to teams. And because of that, sports commerce is evolving.” While Daps, which splits revenues 80/20 between the player and company, is similar in nature to Cameo, Portnoy notes one difference is in Daps’ focus on deliverables like autographed trading cards, game-worn items and experiences designed to engage fans more closely with their favorite athletes. So far, the company is focused on basketball, but Klores says there are plans to expand “into all different sports.” (link)
