#9: Wisconsin-Eau Claire AD Jason Verdugo sits down with D3.ticker/Connect’s Anthony Grassi from the 2024 NCAA Convention to talk about his first year leading the Blugolds, hiring coaches, the impact of the new Sonnentag Complex and more. As he meets with coaches, staff and constituents, Verdugo’s focus is similar to his leadership style – consistent, honest, aggressive and personal. “The consistency in which we go about our work every single day and listening. Honesty, giving honest feedback whether receiving it or giving it. The aggressive pursuit to try to be successful as soon as possible, and then for those that are in a really good position, how do we capitalize that and continue to do that. I think many would agree that sustained success is at times harder than getting there. Then the personal approach, which has changed for me I'll be very honest. It changed for me in the transition. I've been much more intentional to try to connect with the group, where being critical myself I may have lapsed that at times in my previous place at Hamline.” In hiring multiple HCs early in his tenure at UWEC, he leaned on Assoc. AD/SWA Robin Baker and current HCs to understand “what has worked here and what’s going to retain here because I think that’s one of the things at our level. If you look, success is really critical in having somebody stay there for an extended period of time even if they have aspirations to move up and on.” On the impact of the nine-figure Sonnentag Complex, Verdugo notes “one of the things that I championed when I first came on was ‘people win,’ but this is going to be a significant enhancer in continuing to get the type of people that want to be a part of a championship brand.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. #4: Dickinson AD Joel Quattrone will retire at the end of the academic year after 38 years with the Red Devils. Quattrone: "When I took over as Athletic Director, I wanted to foster a welcome and inviting atmosphere for everyone that was a part of this department whether they had been here for 20-plus years or were a recent hire. Anyone that has worked with me or for this department since I ascended to this role will notice that my door is always open and that is not by accident. It has always been my belief that actions speak louder than words, so when I say I wanted the department to feel welcome I meant it and what better way than to allow anyone to stop in to either ask a question or simply say hello. I want everyone to feel that I was a guy who attempted to form solid relationships with everyone and anyone that I met. In addition, I want it to be felt that I always worked hard to impact everyone in any way that I could whether that be a player on the field/court/pool/track, a coach or fellow staff member with a question or using my network to assist our students in procuring employment somewhere it has always been my goal to help anyone that needs it." #1: Birmingham-Southern announces it will close at the end of May. Board of Trustees Chair Keith Thompson explaining: “The Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to close the College after a 2024 bill designed to amend the 2023 legislation that established the loan program on which our future depended failed to win sufficient support in the Alabama House of Representatives. Without that funding, the College does not have the resources to continue.” (link); In the D3FB Huddle’s Frank Rossi adds some athletics context: “This also provides an interesting opportunity for at least one more ASC team to join the SAA as a football member -- OR for some ability for scheduling to improve for the remaining ASC teams. Long story short, this news could have another domino effect for southern #d3fb team affiliations, which could either help or hurt both the ASC & the SAA.” (link)
