James Madison launched its AD search in earnest this week, according to CollegeAD, which reports the process will not include outgoing President Jonathan Alger. The virtual round of interviews with a “small number of candidates” has now reportedly been completed with plans to bring two or three finalists to campus for in-person interviews. The goal is to have a final candidate ready to present to the JMU Board of Visitors in the middle of this month. Interest in the job has come from sitting ADs and Power 5 senior staffers. The Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Special Committee this morning “will hold an executive session…for consideration of certain confidential or privileged communications with university counsel, contract and personnel matters.” The Columbia Daily Tribune’s Calum McAndrew notes the meeting could be a signal the Tigers are closing in on a new AD, but it’s just as, if not more, likely other matters will be the main topics, including former AD Desiree Reed-Francois’ buyout. “Reporting from the Arizona Daily Star noted that Desireé Reed-Francois’ new employer expected her to undertake her ‘best effort’ to reduce the remaining owed amount to Mizzou in her buyout. Arizona, per the report, was willing to contribute $1.5M of the approximately $3M owed to Missouri.” Meanwhile, Michael Howie of the Columbia Missourian reported Wednesday evening that President Mun Choi said the AD search “may take two weeks” or, “it may take a month.” McAndrew: “It’s not uncommon for athletic director searches to take longer than, say, coaching hires. Texas A&M, which hired Turnkey ZRG, like Mizzou, took nearly eight weeks to find a new AD when Ross Bjork departed for Ohio State in January.” It has been roughly seven weeks since Reed-Francois’ departure. Florida State’s response to yesterday’s developments in its lawsuit against the ACC: “Although it’s highly unusual for a court to dismiss a lawsuit at this initial stage, we are disappointed in the Court’s decision not to dismiss the North Carolina lawsuit. We will continue to aggressively advocate for the University, for FSU Athletics, and for the sovereignty of the State of Florida as these cases proceed.” (link)

Heading into the women’s hoops Final Four, ESPN VP of Research Flora Kelly points out the “Women’s NCAA Tournament is pacing +127% over last year” and “female viewership at +133% is notably pacing ahead of overall increases.” (link)

The “boffo” ratings of this year’s men’s and women’s basketball NCAA Tournaments are adding more tension to the debate over whether to expand March Madness, according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken, who is told by one “influential voice” in the sport: “Let’s slow down a little bit here. Why rush into changing the tournament? We can afford to let this play out.” Wolken argues that “with such an uncertain future hovering over this entire conversation, what’s actually in the best interests of the major schools would be a more holistic look at growing college basketball and less focus on changing the structure of a three-week tournament that already delivers incredible results.” Right now, college hoops is less like college football which demands attention throughout the regular season and more like golf or tennis, “sports whose calendars are built around four big events that dwarf all the others…but as the four major championships in golf and the Grand Slams in tennis get bigger every year, there’s almost an inverse relationship with interest in their week-to-week competition.” Complicating matters is the lack of big names that stay from one year to the next. NIL helps, as Wolken notes if Kentucky standout Reed Sheppard decides to return for his sophomore year, NIL would play a huge factor, and “he’d be someone with star power that college basketball can count on to draw viewers and interest throughout next season.” It’s all illustrative of the sport’s unique problem: “College basketball writ large and the phenomenon that is the NCAA tournament are two different entities. … Can you boost one without hurting the other? And if college basketball’s ultimate fate is that it’s a niche sport in the American landscape with one culturally dominant event that drives the entire financial model, does expanding the tournament dilute it or generate even more interest? These are the questions that leaders need to consider.” (link)

Connecticut AD David Benedict talks with the Arizona Republic’s Logan Stanley about the evolution of college sports during his time in the industry and observes “The new environment that we’re in, it’s a very complex set of circumstances. But at the end of the day, you have to worry about the things that you can control. The job is to try to support your coaches and your student-athletes in a way that you’re providing them the necessary resources to be successful. That philosophy has not changed. There are more things that we have to provide. "Back in the day, it was hey, we needed money to recruit, you needed money for your head and assistant coaching staffs and you wanted to have really nice facilities. Most people are not saying, ‘Well, I don’t need any of these things. Now I just need NIL.’” Benedict is aware his name has been mentioned as a potential candidate to take over at Arizona State and tells Stanley: “I’m focused 100% on UConn and what we’re doing right now. We got an amazing opportunity to finish our winter sports, the most successful winter with all of our sports in our history of our athletics program. I’m totally lined up behind our men’s and women’s basketball teams, trying to help them in whatever little way I possibly can so that they can win these two championships. But, I certainly love the Valley. I was born and raised here. Both of my parents are dual-degree earners from ASU, my dad played football there and my wife competed there. So, I have a fondness for ASU. I care about the university. But I’m not concerned or thinking about their opening at the moment.” (link)

In the second of a multi-part interview series with InsideNDSports’ Eric Hansen, Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua says progress has been made on reducing the number of visiting fans who make their way into Notre Dame Stadium. Bevacqua declined to get specific about the Irish’s methodology, however: “It would be like sharing the secret formula for Coca-Cola. … The whole art of ticket sales has absolutely matured over the course of the last several years, aided by technology and moving away from paper tickets to tickets on your phone. It allows you to have your hands far more on the steering wheel than you could back in the day of that Nebraska game or even, quite frankly, as recently as the Georgia game.” As far as positioning the football program for making the College Football Playoff, Bevacqua says: “Over the course of the next eight years [the length of the CFP contracts], the strength of schedule for programs around the country is going to be of an all-time importance in terms of making your way into the CFP. We know that, and other major programs know that. And the thing is Notre Dame has never shied away from playing an incredibly competitive schedule. … The good news for us is that the majority of our games, if you look out through 2032 – we have some holes in the schedule – but we have a great foundation of what our schedule is going to look like over the course of the next decade. And we also have the flexibility to add compelling matchups both here and away.” More from Bevacqua. (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham rejects the notion that UNC does not play “big-time football,” telling Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes: “I think the question is can we win a national championship in football? I think that's the question you're asking. And I think the answer to that is yes. There's only 10 to 15 schools that have ever won national championships in football. I think it's possible. We have played in a [ACC] championship game twice in the last 10 years, so we're bumping up against it. … I know that maybe three times now in the last 12 years, with a 12-team playoff, we'd be in that, so I think we're maybe just outside looking in. So yeah, we're playing big-time football. We are a big-time football program.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd highlights the merits of the NCAA’s push to convince states to outlaw prop betting on college sports and is told by Epic Global Solutions VP of Prevention Dan Trolaro: "European gambling is 8-10 years ahead of the U.S. in terms of sophistication, in terms of what they've seen. You got somebody who comes up to a kid [overseas] and says, 'You double fault in the third game of the second set, I'll make it worth your while.' They transfer here to an NCAA institution, they've already been compromised since they're young. So, now that's a concern." U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt agrees that prop bets are more vulnerable to manipulation and player harassment but tells Dodd: “The fear that I always have is by getting state regulators to ban these, are we doing ourselves a disservice by simply incentivizing people to go to the illegal market and the daily fantasy sports shops and bet on the same thing? Unfortunately, we won't have the same level of transparency…that we do with the regulated sportsbooks." Meanwhile, as demonstrated by the recent cases concerning Iowa and Iowa State, the penalties facing college students mixed up in gambling are often draconian. Iowa AD Beth Goetz: "Not that there shouldn't be any penalties…but societally, it's really difficult. We're all getting bombarded [with information]. We can have a kid get into a bar fight. We can have a kid charged with a misdemeanor. There is a list of some really bad things, and they would have an opportunity to play again. You can bet $500 on something else that's not your own team, which otherwise would be legal, and your career could be over. That just doesn't align to me." (link)

Since the NCAA’s call for states to ban prop betting on college games and athletes, Ohio, Maryland, Vermont and Louisiana have done so, joining nine other states who already prohibited such wagers. Meanwhile, Wyoming and Michigan are also looking into the issue, and according to XLMedia’s Robert Linnehan, regulators in New Jersey, Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana say that even though the NCAA has not approached them, they are willing to consider the policy change. Straight to the Point’s Steve Ruddock subsequently asks: “The lingering question is does the NCAA stop with a ban on prop bets, or does it continue to chip away at college betting markets? The stated goal is to prevent player harassment and maintain game integrity. However, these bets are easily placed offshore, a far greater threat to integrity. And, as I’ve noted regarding player harassment, ‘If you bet on a team and a specific player makes a mistake or misses a key shot, isn’t a deranged bettor still going to blame the player?’” (link)

The NCAA’s NIL working group has introduced a proposal that would allow schools to provide NIL “assistance and services,” including identifying opportunities and facilitating deals with third parties. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the group is recommending that the NCAA Division I Council adopt the proposal as expedited legislation at its meeting later this month and adds: “The proposal is on a parallel track and interconnected with the NIL ‘protections’ legislation that the council adopted in January.” Also, “according to the working group’s proposed legislation, as an incentive for athletes to disclose their deals, schools may only provide assistance to those athletes who have disclosed their contracts. … The NCAA awarded the management of the agent registry, disclosure database and educational plan to Teamworks, sources told Yahoo Sports. Teamworks is a technology platform and app already widely used within many college athletic departments. The deal between the NCAA and Teamworks has not been finalized.” While schools would be allowed to identify and facilitate deals, the proposal stops short of permitting schools to indirectly pay student-athletes through those third parties. The NEC will add Mercyhurst (DII) as its ninth member, starting in 2024-25 with the Lakers to become full DI members in 2028-29. Commissioner Noreen Morris: “Mercyhurst’s commitment to bringing out the best in their student-athletes, both on the field and in the classroom, alongside their focus on community engagement, deeply resonated with our mission and values. ... Their forward-thinking vision and meticulous planning have positioned the Lakers for a seamless and successful transition to Division I and the NEC.” (link); According to a feasibility study conducted by Collegiate Consulting, Mercyhurst’s current $17M athletic budget will increase 33% by FY30, while student-athlete financial aid will increase from 182 scholarships to 211. Collegiate Consulting recommended a $1.6M increase across Mercyhurst’s 25 varsity programs sports’ operating budgets. For athletic staffing, it was proposed to add three full-time and three part-time administrative positions with four new assistant coach positions and transition three part-time coaching positions to full-time. North Carolina Business Court Judge Louis Bledsoe has denied Florida State’s motion to dismiss the ACC’s case against FSU in the state. The court did, however, grant FSU’s motion to dismiss the ACC’s “fifth claim for relief for breach of fiduciary duty” with prejudice. (link); ESPN’s David Hale shares some perspective: “So the big takeaway here is judge in Charlotte says ACC’s suit in NC will move forward. Win for ACC. But…1) FSU certainly can appeal. 2) Judge in Leon Co could also rule for FSU’s suit to proceed but…Fla law is pretty clear that 1st suit filed takes precedent. So unlikely.” The ACC says in a statement: “We are pleased with today’s decision, which confirms North Carolina courts are the proper place to enforce the ACC’s agreements and bylaws. We remain committed to acting in the best interests of the league's members and will see this process through to protect and advance the ACC." Hale notes the “last part of that statement – ‘we will see this process through’ – seems very pointed at the folks who think this is all just a matter of getting to a $ figure that works for all parties. ACC's going to the mattresses – or at least says they will. (link)

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson believes 80 teams is too many as it relates to the college football Super League being proposed by College Sports Tomorrow. “The top 48 moving up and out from the current model would generate as much TV revenue as the top 80 because the matchups would be consistently better. Likely nothing happens till near the end of the current conference/CFP TV deals (2030ish). Go back and read my posts or interviews. I have been an advocate for the regional aspect of CFB for years. But I am also a realist, and the reality is that the advent of NIL and the changes to the media business can't be ignored. Not everyone will be able to compete at the top level.” (link)

After not securing an at-large bid for last year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Atlantic 10 saw six teams earn berths in this year’s field, and Commissioner Bernadette McGlade says conference leadership last season “took a good, hard look at our non-conference schedules, because we always know that our conference schedule will be a gauntlet. I'm proud of the fact that our schools and our scheduling folks at our institutions elevated their non-conference schedules. And you've got to go out and win the games. What was considered a year ago to be the bottom echelon of the league needed to get better, and in fact, they did. And the top echelon of the league continued to maintain their strength. Collectively, that's what you have to do to prove your conference profile." McGlade also says she’d like to see the selection committee rely less on the NET and place a larger emphasis on teams’ last 10 or so games. She adds: “The eye test, it's a really good evaluation tool. Because teams peak and dip. You've got to be peaking by the time selection comes around. If VCU got into the NCAA bracket, I believe they're winning a game or two." Also: “"Nationally, within the NCAA, within the selection criterion, for the good of the game, there should be some metric in there that incentivizes more of a balance in every institution playing both home and away games. It makes a league like the A-10 double-down to try to get great, quality opponents to come into our arenas." (link)

Seton Hall is set to tip in the NIT title game tonight & was ahead of the curve when it began building out its local influencer program last fall, according to JohnWallStreet, who notes the “school started with Barstool Sports personality Frank ‘The Tank’ Fleming, and the results were astounding.” According to Blinkfire Analytics, Fleming’s reaction to Seton Hall’s tournament snub on The Barstool Bracket Show was viewed more than 912K times on Barstool's Instagram account. The earned media value from that one video alone was worth $127,700. For context, JWS notes Seton Hall Men’s Basketball social channels received 1.2M video views across the entirety of the ‘23-’24 regular season. Pirates Deputy AD for Revenue Generation, NIL and Strategic Initiatives Michael McBride: “College athletics has [historically] largely relied on paid media for reach. Earned media may not even be part of some schools’ strategies.” Increasingly, McBride continues, sports organizations are recognizing that “everyone has a role, and local influencers and content creators play a vital one in amplifying the messages that teams are trying to promote, and the narratives they are trying to create.” For some in the risk-averse college sports industry, the strategy of engaging local influencers is counterintuitive, but McBride notes risk and creativity are often rewarded in the private sector. “I knew if we created mutually beneficial relationships [with influencers and content creators] that the positives would outweigh the challenges.” In tapping Fleming, a Seton Hall alum whose followers over-index as New Jersey/New York-based college basketball fans, McBride notes it “authenticates the relationship immediately if the [influencer or content creator] is a fan, alum, or grew up around the team.” (link)
