On a night where Women’s Basketball set an attendance record with 18,284 fans in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for the Final Four, the post-game discord was all about a controversial foul call on UConn as the Huskies attempted to defeat Iowa. Yesterday, USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell published a column with commentary on the state of Women’s Basketball officiating, which includes perspective from Utah AD Mark Harlan, “I think to the overall point as the game has gotten more spotlight and just more people purchasing tickets, watching on television, the fundamental question as administrators is, have we done enough to look at the officiating? And I think the answer is no.” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman: “Over the last 10-15 years, the women’s game has gotten faster and more physical, which makes the officiating job, which is hard to begin with, even tougher. The game is just accelerating at such a pace, we have to make sure we’re getting quality people into the officiating pool.” Ackerman also pointed to challenges starting next year with coast-to-coast conferences: “They’re literally gonna be having referees ping-ponging across the country to work their games, which is going to add to wear and tear, which is ultimately going to affect the quality of work that they do.” Baylor HC Nicki Collen, who is also on the NCAA rules committee: “I think we’re trying to help officiating. But it’s a constant thing. Like, we think officiating is worse — but I think it’s just under a bigger microscope now. They’ve never been more critiqued, never had more film.” Lots more, including the potential for six fouls before a player is disqualified & how the NBA & WNBA are pulling talent away from the college game. UConn AD David Benedict was behind the Huskies bench last night in Cleveland & will assuredly be in the same spot tonight in Phoenix. Benedict talked to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about his tenure to date in Storrs. On key facility upgrades: “In 2016, when I arrived, the facilities that we've built, there was no choice. We had no running water at those facilities. We had no bathrooms. They were maybe average high school-type facilities. For a university with the type of pride and brand that UConn has, it was important to me that it wasn't just about men's and women's basketball. We still have a few more to go, and there's plans to get that done, but most of our student athletes walk around now with facilities that they feel very proud to walk into every day as opposed to you're afraid to show people the facility — and that obviously has an impact in a lot of different ways, on recruitment, on fan experience on competitiveness.” (link)

Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says “We like the NCAA umbrella for managing our tournaments,” but acknowledges other issues between the power conference schools and the rest of the schools in the NCAA: “We (the Division l schools) have to have more true autonomy. The challenges, the budgets, the issues that we deal with are so different than Division ll and Division lll institutions.” Keenum does not see “anytime soon” the dissolution of conferences in favor of a 70-team football tier. A bit more from Keenum’s interview with WTVA 9 News. (link)

Lone Star NIL Founder/former Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett covers several topics with NIL Wire, including the continued ascendancy of the SEC and Big Ten and the possibility of the two leagues going their own way. Burnett explains: “I remain a proponent of the NCAA, believing this self-governing national organization is the best opportunity to unite, maintain and sustain the enterprise. If not the NCAA, then what? There will always have to be some level of national governing oversight. I think it’s a bit naïve to believe we can just get rid of it, as that’s not how this really works. Plus, for every reason someone has for its demise, I’d offer 10 thoughts on why we must hold on to it. Further, if we adopt some alternate conference control, wouldn’t we just move the targets – legal and otherwise – off the back of the NCAA and onto the backs of the leagues? Many, if not all, conferences, including at the autonomy level, don’t really want that. Just like most things in society, we need rules and oversight.” Burnett also believes some programs will need to come to terms with sharing revenue with student-athletes adding: “I truly hope there’s the real opportunity for the larger majority of universities to remain entrenched in an “educational” manner of integrating their athletic programs as an important aspect of the institution’s academic mission.” Burnett acknowledges he is “more traditional” in his thinking when it comes to expanding March Madness but believes it’s a reasonable discussion to have. “However, as I can tell you from my men’s basketball committee experience, there’s no amount of tournament expansion, limited or sizable, that will resolve everything.” (link)

As part of its bid to host the Men’s Final Four, the city of Phoenix had to secure a minimum of 8K “high-quality hotel rooms” for the NCAA and its designees. Local organizing committee President/CEO Jay parry estimates that hotels in the area will book 22,658 room nights with an average daily rate of $359, which is a little more than double the $174/night the area’s 70,687 rooms averaged in calendar year 2003, per data from hotel industry analyst CoStar. SBJ reports: “The weekend is part of a busy summer calendar for the Phoenix area that includes the WNBA All-Star Game coming to the Footprint Center in July and three Conmebol Copa América matches at State Farm Stadium. Other recent NCAA wins for the area include the D-I women’s basketball Final Four; D-I men’s and women's golf regionals; D-II men’s and women's tennis finals; and women's gymnastics regionals (all in 2026); as well as the 2027 NBA All-Star Game.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd profiles the role Big League Advance Founder Michael Schwimer has played in Alabama’s men’s basketball success this season. Crimson Tide AC Ryan Pannone: "He's our secret weapon. He's a beautiful mind." Dodd notes that “Schwimer's involvement is so deep, mystical and effective that [Tide AC Nate] Oats struggles for a title for the former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher.” Oats: “You know what, a consultant GM would be a good way to put it.” When Schwimer and Oats met two years ago at the Final Four in New Orleans, Schwimer’s contract “was hammered out in about a week – without Schwimer exactly asking for a salary,” per Dodd, and Oats recalls Schwimer saying: “We trust our work so much we'll work for nothing. Just a big bonus when we win the whole thing." As for what his firm actually does for the Crimson Tide, Schwimer explains: "We do, literally, everything. [We assist with] who do we get in the transfer portal? How do you build the team? Then the skillsets around each player. Then I sit down for 90 minutes with each player before the summer even starts. I figure out motivational factors for players." Since Oats referenced a “third-party analytics company we use” after defeating Clemson last week, Schwimer says a dozen teams have reached out. Schwimer: "He never mentioned us by name. No one knows, until you tell the world." The only other program Schwimer & team currently work with is Duke. (link)

LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen chimes in on the prop betting debate: “These prop bets are very, very risky for colleges and universities. Yes, employment is a big issue. Yes, NIL is big. But sports betting is really big. And I can tell you, college presidents are very much worried about it.” (link)

Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton pens a letter inviting fans to donate to both the Mocs Club and The Flock NIL Collective. “Moreover, I'd like to emphasize the critical importance of supporting our basketball programs. Our intention is not to prioritize certain sports over others, but rather it is to illustrate where the current need exists. The landscape of college basketball and NIL has reached unprecedented heights, and the time is now for us to adapt. Basketball is not just a game for our community; it's a rallying point and a beacon of excellence that shines far beyond Chattanooga as you see with many schools during March Madness. NIL is a focal point in the recruitment of student-athletes. If we want to continue to be a leader in our region and recognized nationally as one of the top programs at our level, we must increase the amount of NIL funds available for our student-athletes to utilize in enhancing their brand power. This is a pivotal step into the bold, new era of collegiate athletics. We will soon welcome a new head coach to lead our women's basketball team. The success of this transition and the continued prosperity of the program hinge on your support through both the Mocs Club and NIL contributions.” Full letter. (link)

Michigan Regent Denise Ilitch is leading the charge to bring a Women’s Ice Hockey team into the Wolverines portfolio of sports. During the university’s March public session, Ilitch drummed up enough support from other regents that UM President Santa Ono suggested a feasibility study on the matter. Ilitch says a number of companies, including College Hockey Inc., have already approached the group about conducting the study. For context, the state of Michigan has seven Division I men's hockey teams and zero women’s teams. By comparison, Massachusetts has 11 men’s teams and eight women’s teams. New York has 11 men’s, and 10 women’s and Minnesota has six men’s and six women’s teams. Ilitch: “It’s a hockey state. It's a hockey town for men and women. But for girls and women, in order to find opportunities after growing up with the sport, they have to leave the state. It’s time to change that. When elite women have to leave our state to find opportunities, we have a problem. That’s not serving what the University of Michigan is about and not serving the people of the state.” (link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman weighs in on the debate over whether to expand March Madness and tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “The tournament is a source of great pride to the teams. The mid-majors who win games — see Oakland, see Yale [this year] — to take that away, I think would be a fatal mistake. But the question is if that’s the desire of these newly expanded conferences — who did it for one reason only, and that was football — why would messing with a good thing have to be on the backs of the rest of us?” Horizon Commissioner Julie Roe Lach adds: “To me, it’s not a typical mantra of growth is a good thing, because in some instances, it’s not. With the tournament, we’ve got to be really objective about the reason for growth.” Desser Media President Ed Desser points out that adding games does not necessarily incentivize TV partners to pay more for them. “Remember, in [the NCAA’s] world, revenue maximization is less important than revenue certainty. That’s why they have long-term deals and that’s why they’re happy to lock them in. They’ve got a lot of mouths to feed and knowing that you’ve got some food coming is important.” (link)

In addition to convening a working group to reevaluate the ACC’s men’s hoops performance in metrics such as the NET and KenPom, Commissioner Jim Phillips says the league is also working with Wasserman Media Group to sell itself better. “And I think we need to continue to do a better job with our own network. And within our own network, there’s a residual (effect) at the mothership in Bristol, with ESPN. So we have to continue to be aggressive in this space, and find creative ways to continue to tell our story. Because we do have a great story.” On the state of college athletics overall, Phillips has advocated for the industry to more closely resemble a “healthy neighborhood” than an area with a “few gated communities” and tells the News & Observer’s Andrew Carter: “I got blasted by some people about the neighborhood analogy and all the rest of it. Well, that’s exactly what’s come to fruition here. Do we want just a certain subdivision in the community to be healthy or do we want the enterprise to be healthy? Do we want more than one area or one neighborhood to be healthy? And I think you know exactly how I feel about that.” (link)

One SEC Football HC tells On3 that he discussed the College Sports Tomorrow “Super League” idea with his AD and “it’s nothing. My AD told me that it’s DOA. There’s no way the SEC will go with the idea.” Meanwhile, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes that “the three entities most necessary for the long-talked about Super League are the Big Ten, SEC and TV networks. If they were interested, they would not have signed the CFP deal. The proposal died, at least for now, when the CFP was executed.” (link, link); Crakes Media’s namesake chimes in: “A College Sports "Super League"-however formatted-could emerge eventually but not until we sort out how the distribution economics to support it get generated. It's hard to figure how the current system could successfully support such an entity. In 5+ years it may be possible but only with clear stable proven distribution revenue streams which we don't have currently…” (link)

The event will bring together women leaders in sports to discuss how to collectively leverage the momentum of women's sports to create even greater growth, attention, exposure and value for all women's sports, identify ways to increase the number of women working and leading in sports (men's and women's) and create connection across all sectors of sports. The two-day event will include think tank sessions and a public Q&A forum, as well as several invitation-only receptions and connection events centered around the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek discusses his approach to social media, telling HawgBeat.com’s Mason Choate that "I try to block out the noise. I'm not active on social media from receiving things. I push out information about our student-athletes and their success and their upcoming games and events and things of that nature. I have been really strict as far as not reading social media. My wife has never been on social media. I don't read the local newspaper. I don't partake of local radio or TV, so I think that's kind of helped me manage those expectations that our fans have about me and my role." Choate notes that while he may not be seeing it, Yurachek “has taken a lot of heat not only for posting the [Muss Bus] video without [Men’s Basketball HC Eric] Musselman's approval, but also for the comments he made on the 1 Star Recruits Podcast.” Yurachek, however, says he understands that scrutiny is part of the job, particularly at an SEC school. "I'd rather have a passionate fanbase that's throwing daggers a few times, than an apathetic fanbase that really doesn't care.” (link)

Harvard AD Erin McDermott acknowledges the possibility of some alumni pulling financial support following the hiring of Football HC Andrew Aurich: “I think that could happen. I think it’s unfortunate if that happens because this is about Harvard football, and it’s a program that they obviously care a lot about. … I would hope that you would give Coach Aurich an opportunity to show who he is and what he can do and support this team and support Harvard football.” Many players and alumni supported promoting an internal candidate, with many wanting to see Crimson DC Scott Larkee ascend to the HC post. They also question the level of transparency during the search process, but McDermott says: “I feel like there was the same level of transparency as there was with any other search that we’ve run and an appropriate level of transparency for a hiring process that is not open to the public.” As far as former HC Tim Murphy’s retirement goes, McDermott says she was surprised by his decision. “He and I had talked a bit about his time here and what he was maybe thinking of the future. He shared with me that he felt it was time for him to not coach. “I fully expected that conversation to be, ‘Maybe he thought that next season was the time.’” (link)

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry says college athletes’ scholarships should be at risk if they skip the playing of the national anthem before games, as LSU’s women’s hoops student-athletes did prior to Monday’s matchup against Iowa. Tigers HC Kim Mulkey says the team’s absence was part of pregame preparation and not intended to cause disrespect. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes Landry’s suggestion comes at a time when the amount of control athletic departments exert over student-athletes is under a microscope vis-à-vis employment status. “College scholarships impose a bevy of requirements on athletes, including that they attend team activities, refrain from misconduct and maintain a minimum GPA. But they do not currently include a penalty for skipping the anthem played before sporting events. Unless their team specifically requires that they appear for the playing of the anthem or unless it is a negotiated term of employment, players would not have that obligation. A requirement, such as by state statute or regulation, compelling a public university student to attend the anthem as a condition of a scholarship would likely spark a legal challenge. Students enjoy free speech rights under the First Amendment, including speech or conduct that might be considered offensive to some. … A private university’s ability to restrict or compel students is enhanced because, unlike a public university, it is not a ‘state actor’ or arm of the government that must adhere to Constitutional requirements.” (link); LSU AD Scott Woodward says the department has reviewed Landry’s letter and that LSU “will always be dedicated to the flag, the anthem and the country. We consistently look at all our processes and will do so again. As Louisiana’s flagship university, LSU always strives to represent the higher ideals and values of our students, our state and our country.” (link)

Boise State’s plans to revamp Albertsons Stadium are coming into view. The Broncos hope to start construction on the $60M project to replace several long-standing temporary seating structures in the north end zone. The project will add new premium seating and make a series of upgrades under the new stadium structure. It will also build a new concourse that will connect the east and west sides of the stadium on the north end zone. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey: “We have zero remaining premium spaces in Albertsons Stadium. This solves some of that. Our community has grown significantly in the past five years, and we have to provide opportunities for the sake of our business for those individuals in the community that want premium space.” The project is expected to shrink capacity by about 1,570 seats. It also includes plans for a series of enclosed field-level suites, loge boxes and a new offering Boise State is calling a ledge seat. It is expected to be completed in time for the 2026 season. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Cody Gougler: “The annual revenue that we’re probably going to see is between $4M and $5M. $4.5M a year is a substantial opportunity for us to take those revenues, make sure we’re paying down (debt), and taking care of our expenses, utilities, and inflation, – and we feel confident in our our margins to where we ought to be able to take that and pour it back in to grow the athletic department.” (link)

San Diego State will conduct a study on possible renovations to Viejas Arena with a specific focus on improving the main concourse, including food and beverage purveyors, hospitality experiences throughout the arena and other services outside the arena. Aztecs AD John David Wicker: "We are committed to improving the fan experience at Viejas Arena. We began considering renovations in 2019 and, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, had to delay the exploration. … With a perennial national power men's basketball program selling out virtually every home game, we are determined to provide the best possible fan experience.” (link)

As it faces a $40M budget deficit and 8% enrollment drop, Cleveland State is offering voluntary buyout packages to faculty and staff. Last fall, the university enrolled about 14,175 total students, down about 13% from the nearly 16,330 students who enrolled in 2018, and President Laura Bloomberg says the school must “manage to our reality,” which includes projections that the student body could number 13K by 2029. For those interested in the buyouts, they would receive a one-time lump sum equal to the employee’s annual salary. (link)
