The Iowa vs. UConn NCAA Women’s Basketball semifinal game drew 14.2M viewers and peaked at 17M, setting a new record for the most-watched women’s college basketball game in history. The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch puts it in perspective: This game tops every World Series game last year, every NBA Finals game last year, every Daytona 500 since 2013, every Masters final round viewership since 2013 and all but five college football games in 2023. Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis predicts today’s title game could reach 20M, while SBJ’s Austin Karp estimates the tally will be 18M. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports on the IRS letter sent to NIL collectives back in January as “watchdog publication” Tax Notes obtained a copy, leading former IRS lawyer & non-profit expert Phil Hackney to remark: “This seems to be an indictment against [the tax-exempt status of] all the collectives and should mean the other collectives lose their status as well. [...] It puts a real burden upon the professionals who are advising these organizations. Can they in good faith give legal advice or auditing advice that the organization continues to qualify? In my own, personal opinion, I wouldn’t sign off on one.” Further, Hackney believes collectives that have already received 501(c)(3) status were due to an administrative error. More. The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner talks to attorney Eric MacMichael, who represented Oregon State & Washington State in its lawsuit against the departing Pac-12 members, and MacMichael says a key focus on the process was accounting for future potential litigation results, such as the House v. NCAA case. Specifically, exiting institutions have been released from liabilities, except for a four-page section of the settlement agreement that’s redacted, but clearly includes the House situation. MacMichael: “The House case was front and center in our thinking. We had to address that. It’s an existential case for the NCAA and all the (named) conferences. And I don’t think it’s going to get resolved in the immediate future.” (link)

San Francisco will discontinue its men’s and women’s tennis programs at the conclusion of this season. AD Larry Williams’ statement, in part: “USF's tennis programs have represented the university exceedingly well over many decades. Our campus community and alumni body are proud of the current team and their hard work, commitment, and achievements in Division I and West Coast Conference competition.” The programs cost $1M+ to operate annually, according to Williams. Scholarships for current players will be honored. (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter had some fun on X on Friday to celebrate Men’s Basketball HC Chris Beard staying in Oxford. Posting photos of his turkey hunt with Realtree VP of Strategic Partnerships and Digital Host Tyler Jordan, Carter compared the “beard” of a turkey to Coach Beard. Carter: “Pretty good Friday morning. Brought this beard back from Georgia @TylerJordan @Realtree and kept another Beard rolling with @OleMissMBB @ChrisBeard. Ole Miss Athletics isn’t messing around folks. We’re here to win and win big!” (link)

NC State headlining Men’s Basketball student-athlete DJ Burns’ magical run came to an end last night in Phoenix, but Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports Burns’ sensational March Madness play - plus his engaging personality - have generated “mid-six figures in deals the past three weeks.” Inkstars Creative Group brand manager Jameisha Trice-Rayborn represents Burns: “It’s been complete pandemonium. Deal after deal, meetings with everybody. [...] We’ve seen all the Cinderella runs, but I don’t think we’ve had … one where a player emerged with this level of impact.” (link)

Last night’s Georgia-Mississippi State baseball game in Starkville was marked by one of the most confusing situations in recent memory. The top of the 8th ended with UGA’s Dillon Carter being thrown out at the plate after trying to score from first on a double, followed by some extracurriculars by MSU catcher Johnny Long. Members of both teams spilled onto the field, but the incident quickly dissipated, only to see the game be delayed by 42 minutes for the umpires & the SEC review team in Birmingham to eject a slew of players, some of whom were very clearly acting as peacemakers. Georgia went on to win 3-2 after both lineups were overhauled due to the ejections and the kicker is there’s still not full clarity identifying all those ejected and if all involved will face further suspensions. The SEC Network team of Dave Neal and Chris Burke were equally left in the dark as the game resumed and had to piece together who was playing where as the action unfolded. An odd sequence that will surely lead to - at minimum - changes to communication between umpires on the field and media covering the event to accurately inform the viewing public of developments, as well as how student-athletes actively diffusing a tense situation can be ejected. Coaches Corner…
+ Fresno State hires Clovis West High School Head Coach Vance Walberg as its next Men’s Basketball HC. Walberg has been in his current role since 2016, but has experience in both the college and NBA levels, with stops at Pepperdine (HC 2006-08) and UMass (AC 2008-11). (link)
+ Former Michigan Basketball HC Juwan Howard sits down for a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn. Howard opens up about his surgery, explaining that he learned blood clots were found in his lungs and an unruptured aneurysm was discovered in his aorta. The blood clots, he says, were saving his life. “I was scared. But I never admitted that. I didn’t show it in front of my wife or my family, and I never showed it in front of my staff.” Doctors implored Howard to take the entire season off, and Howard admits now that “if I could go back and do it all over again, I would’ve taken time off to really get help. I should’ve listened more to the doctors and my wife. There were days that I wouldn’t get any sleep and could barely get out of bed, but I’d go in there and try to act like I was fine.” Howard also shares his side of the altercation with former Strength & Conditioning Coach Jon Sanderson and explains when he heard his son, Jace, yelling at an athletic trainer, he shouted at him to stop. “I’m his father, right? He knew that look and knew that voice, right? So he stopped immediately.” Sanderson, according to Howard, got involved anyway, saying to Jace: “You don’t talk to a superior like that.” Howard: “Which is true. I agree. But then he kept going. Jon said, ‘Jace, that’s bullsh–!’ You don’t talk to a superior that way, this is the sh— I’m talking about.’” Sanderson says he encountered the same type of behavior from another player, and Howard recalls telling him: “Yo, Jon, chill the f— out. I told you I got it. … I’m like three weeks into returning to the facility and have an incision on my chest. Also, I’m not stupid. After the Wisconsin situation, I said I would never, ever, ever put myself in a situation like that again…and second, that I would never put our players in an unsafe environment, and the last part, to never embarrass the entire university and my family. So am I gonna try to fight (Sanderson)? (He’s) 6-8 and strong as sh–.” As for how his tenure ended, Howard says he’s “never going to be bitter about the situation,” adding: “I’m a Michigan man through and through. … I’m just sad I’m leaving a lot sooner than I expected to.” Lots more. WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss managing sports wagering and its impact on student-athletes, the structure of the WAC Basketball Conference Tournament seeding and the impact that plays on future scheduling and more. Thornton explains that sports gambling is a frequent topic of discussion with student-athletes and tells Banker: “It's not stopping. Our young people both on the men's and women's side are gambling across campuses at a rate that is unprecedented in a lot of ways, and we're naive to think that that doesn't penetrate to our student-athletes – that they're not gambling to a certain extent.” Thornton also notes it’s naive to think those who are gambling around student-athletes don't have an impact on their day-to-day lives. That said, Thornton is “probably a proponent more of maybe taking off some of the strings, especially around professional sports gambling. I think that is much different than college sports gambling. Now, there's a lot of tentacles there, and I'm certainly not saying we need to rip the Band-Aid off, but I think that we have to explore that in a different way than we have in the past because student-athletes and young people are going to gamble and how can we make sure that we maybe provide the proper amount of balance there?” Full Q&A on Connect. Texas Tech FAR Brian Shannon and former Nebraska FAR Josephine Potuto posit in an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed that rather than establish educational trust funds for student-athletes at universities in a new subdivision, as outlined in Project DI, a “better approach is simply to set a budget threshold for inclusion that could be adjusted upward over time. [NCAA President Charlie] Baker noted that 59 Division I institutions spend more than $100M annually on their athletics programs. We’re not saying that’s the magic number, but we think that some such threshold is needed for the new subdivision to succeed.” In their argument against a trust fund-based approach, Shannon and Potuto worry that “medium-resourced institutions still might stretch their resources to reach it. They might cut sports and opportunities for athletes, which would be deeply unfortunate.” They go on to contend that “no viable reform appears possible unless a new subdivision is created. It is an idea well past its time, and we applaud Baker for taking the first step. But we also think the NCAA’s approach is, once again, much too slow. It should not take until January 2025 just to create the subdivision. The Division I Board need only embrace—finally—the concept of a new subdivision and set the criteria for entry. At that point, the new subdivision needs to get to work—quickly.” (link)

Bruin Capital CEO George Pyne tells CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin he believes women’s sports have “real traction,” adding: “When you take a step back globally, soccer is on fire both in the United States from a women’s standpoint and internationally. You see college basketball, even women's volleyball, but I'm surprised by the traction that the pro women's hockey league has. So, just the tailwind in women’s sports that hasn't been there before and it's great to see.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Are mental health services provided to an institution's athletic alumni?
Ashton Henderson, Deputy Athletics Director at Michigan State, and Renaldo Hill, NFL/College football coach, discuss the transition away from playing sports as a competitor and the impact it can have on former athletes. Henderson describes a new resource at Michigan State for former student-athletes called Alumni STATE of Mind.
• Available to anyone who was a student-athlete at Michigan State
• 24-hour crisis line for MSU athletic alumni managed by The Hope Desk
• Discounted services anywhere in the country managed by Skywood Recovery
• For those without insurance, Fund Recovery will work with former student-athletes to ensure quality care despite any financial challenges
Both Henderson and Hill describe their respective transitions to their current professions. Hill talks about mentoring NFL and college football players and helping them focus on life away from Football, while Henderson covers providing services to current student-athletes and ensuring care is accessible after they finish playing. On a night where Women’s Basketball set an attendance record with 18,284 fans in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for the Final Four, the post-game discord was all about a controversial foul call on UConn as the Huskies attempted to defeat Iowa. Yesterday, USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell published a column with commentary on the state of Women’s Basketball officiating, which includes perspective from Utah AD Mark Harlan, “I think to the overall point as the game has gotten more spotlight and just more people purchasing tickets, watching on television, the fundamental question as administrators is, have we done enough to look at the officiating? And I think the answer is no.” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman: “Over the last 10-15 years, the women’s game has gotten faster and more physical, which makes the officiating job, which is hard to begin with, even tougher. The game is just accelerating at such a pace, we have to make sure we’re getting quality people into the officiating pool.” Ackerman also pointed to challenges starting next year with coast-to-coast conferences: “They’re literally gonna be having referees ping-ponging across the country to work their games, which is going to add to wear and tear, which is ultimately going to affect the quality of work that they do.” Baylor HC Nicki Collen, who is also on the NCAA rules committee: “I think we’re trying to help officiating. But it’s a constant thing. Like, we think officiating is worse — but I think it’s just under a bigger microscope now. They’ve never been more critiqued, never had more film.” Lots more, including the potential for six fouls before a player is disqualified & how the NBA & WNBA are pulling talent away from the college game. UConn AD David Benedict was behind the Huskies bench last night in Cleveland & will assuredly be in the same spot tonight in Phoenix. Benedict talked to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about his tenure to date in Storrs. On key facility upgrades: “In 2016, when I arrived, the facilities that we've built, there was no choice. We had no running water at those facilities. We had no bathrooms. They were maybe average high school-type facilities. For a university with the type of pride and brand that UConn has, it was important to me that it wasn't just about men's and women's basketball. We still have a few more to go, and there's plans to get that done, but most of our student athletes walk around now with facilities that they feel very proud to walk into every day as opposed to you're afraid to show people the facility — and that obviously has an impact in a lot of different ways, on recruitment, on fan experience on competitiveness.” (link)

Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says “We like the NCAA umbrella for managing our tournaments,” but acknowledges other issues between the power conference schools and the rest of the schools in the NCAA: “We (the Division l schools) have to have more true autonomy. The challenges, the budgets, the issues that we deal with are so different than Division ll and Division lll institutions.” Keenum does not see “anytime soon” the dissolution of conferences in favor of a 70-team football tier. A bit more from Keenum’s interview with WTVA 9 News. (link)

Lone Star NIL Founder/former Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett covers several topics with NIL Wire, including the continued ascendancy of the SEC and Big Ten and the possibility of the two leagues going their own way. Burnett explains: “I remain a proponent of the NCAA, believing this self-governing national organization is the best opportunity to unite, maintain and sustain the enterprise. If not the NCAA, then what? There will always have to be some level of national governing oversight. I think it’s a bit naïve to believe we can just get rid of it, as that’s not how this really works. Plus, for every reason someone has for its demise, I’d offer 10 thoughts on why we must hold on to it. Further, if we adopt some alternate conference control, wouldn’t we just move the targets – legal and otherwise – off the back of the NCAA and onto the backs of the leagues? Many, if not all, conferences, including at the autonomy level, don’t really want that. Just like most things in society, we need rules and oversight.” Burnett also believes some programs will need to come to terms with sharing revenue with student-athletes adding: “I truly hope there’s the real opportunity for the larger majority of universities to remain entrenched in an “educational” manner of integrating their athletic programs as an important aspect of the institution’s academic mission.” Burnett acknowledges he is “more traditional” in his thinking when it comes to expanding March Madness but believes it’s a reasonable discussion to have. “However, as I can tell you from my men’s basketball committee experience, there’s no amount of tournament expansion, limited or sizable, that will resolve everything.” (link)

As part of its bid to host the Men’s Final Four, the city of Phoenix had to secure a minimum of 8K “high-quality hotel rooms” for the NCAA and its designees. Local organizing committee President/CEO Jay parry estimates that hotels in the area will book 22,658 room nights with an average daily rate of $359, which is a little more than double the $174/night the area’s 70,687 rooms averaged in calendar year 2003, per data from hotel industry analyst CoStar. SBJ reports: “The weekend is part of a busy summer calendar for the Phoenix area that includes the WNBA All-Star Game coming to the Footprint Center in July and three Conmebol Copa América matches at State Farm Stadium. Other recent NCAA wins for the area include the D-I women’s basketball Final Four; D-I men’s and women's golf regionals; D-II men’s and women's tennis finals; and women's gymnastics regionals (all in 2026); as well as the 2027 NBA All-Star Game.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd profiles the role Big League Advance Founder Michael Schwimer has played in Alabama’s men’s basketball success this season. Crimson Tide AC Ryan Pannone: "He's our secret weapon. He's a beautiful mind." Dodd notes that “Schwimer's involvement is so deep, mystical and effective that [Tide AC Nate] Oats struggles for a title for the former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher.” Oats: “You know what, a consultant GM would be a good way to put it.” When Schwimer and Oats met two years ago at the Final Four in New Orleans, Schwimer’s contract “was hammered out in about a week – without Schwimer exactly asking for a salary,” per Dodd, and Oats recalls Schwimer saying: “We trust our work so much we'll work for nothing. Just a big bonus when we win the whole thing." As for what his firm actually does for the Crimson Tide, Schwimer explains: "We do, literally, everything. [We assist with] who do we get in the transfer portal? How do you build the team? Then the skillsets around each player. Then I sit down for 90 minutes with each player before the summer even starts. I figure out motivational factors for players." Since Oats referenced a “third-party analytics company we use” after defeating Clemson last week, Schwimer says a dozen teams have reached out. Schwimer: "He never mentioned us by name. No one knows, until you tell the world." The only other program Schwimer & team currently work with is Duke. (link)

LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen chimes in on the prop betting debate: “These prop bets are very, very risky for colleges and universities. Yes, employment is a big issue. Yes, NIL is big. But sports betting is really big. And I can tell you, college presidents are very much worried about it.” (link)

Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton pens a letter inviting fans to donate to both the Mocs Club and The Flock NIL Collective. “Moreover, I'd like to emphasize the critical importance of supporting our basketball programs. Our intention is not to prioritize certain sports over others, but rather it is to illustrate where the current need exists. The landscape of college basketball and NIL has reached unprecedented heights, and the time is now for us to adapt. Basketball is not just a game for our community; it's a rallying point and a beacon of excellence that shines far beyond Chattanooga as you see with many schools during March Madness. NIL is a focal point in the recruitment of student-athletes. If we want to continue to be a leader in our region and recognized nationally as one of the top programs at our level, we must increase the amount of NIL funds available for our student-athletes to utilize in enhancing their brand power. This is a pivotal step into the bold, new era of collegiate athletics. We will soon welcome a new head coach to lead our women's basketball team. The success of this transition and the continued prosperity of the program hinge on your support through both the Mocs Club and NIL contributions.” Full letter. (link)

Michigan Regent Denise Ilitch is leading the charge to bring a Women’s Ice Hockey team into the Wolverines portfolio of sports. During the university’s March public session, Ilitch drummed up enough support from other regents that UM President Santa Ono suggested a feasibility study on the matter. Ilitch says a number of companies, including College Hockey Inc., have already approached the group about conducting the study. For context, the state of Michigan has seven Division I men's hockey teams and zero women’s teams. By comparison, Massachusetts has 11 men’s teams and eight women’s teams. New York has 11 men’s, and 10 women’s and Minnesota has six men’s and six women’s teams. Ilitch: “It’s a hockey state. It's a hockey town for men and women. But for girls and women, in order to find opportunities after growing up with the sport, they have to leave the state. It’s time to change that. When elite women have to leave our state to find opportunities, we have a problem. That’s not serving what the University of Michigan is about and not serving the people of the state.” (link)
