Congratulations to South Carolina for winning the women’s basketball national championship & completing an undefeated season. Following the game, Gamecocks HC Dawn Staley congratulated Iowa on its season and added: “I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport. She carried a heavy load for our sport, and it just is not going to stop here on the collegiate tour, but when she’s the No. 1 pick in the WNBA, she’s going to lift that league up as well. So, Caitlin Clark, if you’re out there, you are one of the GOATs of our game, and we appreciate you.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker tells Howard Megdal of The Next that “our goal is to get [NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament units] up for the next fiscal year, which would be 2024-25.” An NCAA spokesperson tells Sportico’s Dylan Manfre that Baker’s remarks were an expression of his confidence that the matter would be approved in a vote by the DI membership rather than a declaration that women’s basketball units are coming. (link); USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell asks Baker whether he envisions a future in which student-athletes would be compensated for March Madness, whether by the NCAA or their schools. Baker: “I’ve said since I got to the NCAA that we ought to make some changes to how support for student athletes works in Division I and we’ve done a number of things already to deal with that. But I’m not going to get ahead of the membership on this. I’m sure it’s a conversation we’ll be having going forward.” Baker also discusses the state of officiating and tells Schnell: “We’re chasing a big initiative around officiating generally. … One of the biggest is the treatment they receive from everywhere – from people at attendance at events, from people after attendance at events, on social media. That’s no secret to anybody, one of the great challenges everyone has in sports these days at the collegiate level is the beatdown that gets delivered on officials when they perform. That has a pretty big impact on whether people want to be in and stay in it. We have a lot of work to do there, but some of that work needs to come from a lot of the people around the game, which is unfortunate.” Full interview. (link)

News of the morning has multiple reports indicating Arkansas will hire Kentucky Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari for the same role in Fayetteville. Compensation for Calipari is expected to be in the $8M range with another $5M for NIL purposes. As of last night UK AD Mitch Barnhart had not heard from Calipari. No buyout would be due to the Wildcats. (link, link)

In another headlining hoops move, Tennessee selects Marshall Women’s Basketball HC Kim Caldwell for the same role in Knoxville. An introduction is slated for Tuesday. Vols AD Danny White: “Kim has a winning formula that she has successfully implemented everywhere she has coached, with a fast-paced, high-octane offense and pressure defense that has led to remarkable results. In this new era of college sports, it was vital that we found an innovative head coach with a strong track record of winning titles. We are eager to return the Lady Vols to a championship level, and we're confident that Kim Caldwell is the coach who can lead us back to the top." (link)

In the third and final installment of a sit-down with InsideNDSports, Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua says keeping the Fighting Irish relevant amid the changing landscape of the industry is among the top priorities: “And full credit, [former AD] Jack [Swarbrick] did a wonderful job with that. And that shows the relevance and the value and the unique power of Notre Dame. To maintain that independence in football, to be a key part of the ACC in all of our other sports with the exception of hockey. But to have that voice in intercollegiate sports — whether you’re interacting with the NCAA or colleagues at the ACC or have a seat at that very important table at the CFP, to have that voice in Washington when you’re talking to Congress about NIL and the importance of the student-athlete experience. If I look back over the course of the eight months – and Jack and I have such a great partnership and such a great friendship and he’s impressed me in so many ways – I’d say where he’s impressed me the most is in his dealing with Washington.” Bevacqua says that “without sounding naive or Pollyanna, I believe in my heart that most of the people that are involved in college sports, most of the people that are going to be involved in making decisions that impact college sports — whether that’s the NCAA or Congress, conferences, conference commissioners, university presidents — understand that there’s something really important about being a student-athlete. And we have to maintain that term. … The main goal of Notre Dame is that we are going to absolutely do everything we can to maintain the student-athlete experience on our campus and simultaneously compete at the highest level and compete to win national championships. And we firmly believe we can do both.” (link)

Former Montana/Oregon/Washington State/Nebraska AD Bill Moos says if college athletics existed in 1982 as it did today, “I wouldn’t have gotten into it.” Moos asserts that conference realignment, paying players and other issues facing the industry are “against everything I believe college athletics should be about.” Moos also notes he “loved [former WSU President] Elson Floyd because he was a big thinker. If you wanted to get on his bad side, say you can’t do something. He never made me feel like I worked for him.” But he recalls telling Floyd: “We have some challenges – big, costly challenges. And, you have to have my back. We have to do it now.” The Spokesman-Review’s Thomas Clouse notes “by 2012, WSU moved forward on $165M worth of upgrades to football-only facilities. More spending upgraded the baseball clubhouse, training facilities, practice facilities for men’s and women’s basketball, and a new soccer complex.” Moos: “That arms race of it, I was in the middle of it. I’m probably the poster boy.” The Cougars have been grappling with revenue problems since then, and Moos admits: “There was debt service that I will take full responsibility there. But, it was money well spent. To get our facilities up to par and to hire a coach like Mike Leach. Look what came of it.” Moos tells Clouse that he sat down with a group of ADs 15 years ago and assigned values for all the benefits student-athletes received, including room and board, books, tuition, three meals a day, personal trainers and access to facilities. “In the Pac-12 that year, it was about $200K a year. That’s pretty good for a 19-year-old.” (link)

Rhode Island AD Thorr Bjorn joins Playfly’s On the Fly podcast and credits the three presidents for whom he’s worked with contributing to his longevity in the role. “You’re really at the mercy a lot of times with presidents you’re working for…and I’ve been very lucky to receive the support I’ve had from all three. And I certainly hope that I can finish my career here at the University of Rhode Island.” Bjorn acknowledges that NIL is “not going away” and says URI will continue to embrace it. While he was always on board with student-athletes earning money via their NIL, Bjorn admits he struggled with it morphing into a collective-driven model rather than the “types of entrepreneurial stuff” but adds: “When I think about where NIL is or what it needs to be if we're going to do all those things that I mentioned earlier in our conversation about making sure that the basketball coach, the basketball players, the team, feel supported and want to be here, we have to make sure that we do that. We've made this a priority and we’ve really put our best foot forward in terms of our NIL opportunities.” Looking at the future from a conference perspective, Bjorn explains no one is asking fellow Atlantic 10 members to invest in certain sports across the board, but “what we are all telling each other is we need to be really good at basketball. … There’s been a lot of schools within that league, and as we look to ever expand, if we lose a team and ask who are we going to tap to take a spot, it's always done very strategically. You look at Loyola Chicago, our most recent addition, certainly coming off of two great basketball runs. They’re basketball-centric.” Full pod. (link)

Want to work at Dartmouth? Big Green AD Mike Harrity joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the department’s Deputy AD for Business Strategy and Operations opening. Harrity outlines key initiatives he’s leading and how this new hire would help to drive those forward, his vision for the role, how he determines fit and why now is a good time to join the Dartmouth team. Harrity: “Dartmouth is the most distinct Ivy League institution in so many ways. One example is we’re the smallest institution in the Ivy League in terms of enrollment, and in that example we really view our size as a strength. The sense of community here is something like I've never felt before. … We've been through some really tough, challenging situations in the past year, and the way this place really leans on each other and locks arms and loves and cares for one another is something I haven't seen before. … I think somebody who has an appreciation for, an excitement about those distinctions and about what makes Dartmouth unique is really important to us.” Full Q&A now on Connect. The recently adopted College Football Playoff revenue distribution model has “cast the Big 12 and the ACC as necessary partners, the strangest of bedfellows,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who cites numerous differences between the two leagues, including: “Were the SEC and Big Ten to hold an expansion draft, the top four picks would come from the ACC: North Carolina would be the first off the board…followed by some combination of Virginia, Florida State and Clemson. Heck, Miami might even give the ACC a clean sweep of the top five selections. In that regard, the revenue distribution within the CFP’s new contract doesn’t reflect the competitive stature of the two leagues.” Wilner notes that based on new conference configurations, the ACC has had seven teams reach the CFP compared to the Big 12’s two (the SEC and Big Ten had 17 and 12, respectively). That said, Wilner points out this could all change, as “multiple sources with knowledge of the CFP’s agreement with ESPN” tell him there is a series of “openers” that allow for changes in the early years of the contract cycle. One of those openers shifts the revenue shares if a particular conference outperforms its baseline participation figure. Additionally, if the “most valuable football brands depart the ACC, a new playoff structure could arise. And it’s not difficult to envision several schools seeking refuge in the Big 12, prompting the strangest of bedfellows to join together in unholy matrimony.” (link)

Dan Furman, president of the Louisville-focused 502Circle, tells WDRB’s Eric Crawford 850 people have contributed to the collective in the past seven days. “And as NIL continues to grow, I think that’s the future, the sustainability of this. I’m a fundraiser. After my time in the Cardinal Athletic Fund and my time here in Louisville, spending a lot of that time as a fundraiser, you see those challenges and how hard it is to get donors and individuals to be able to support year in and year out. That's a major challenge across the country. So, for us to be able to step up in this way and provide as many new memberships as we have, so many new independent one-time donations, I think it just gives us an incredible boost that we can try and create some sustainability.” Furman says the collective has received questions from other collectives around the country who would seek to duplicate 502Circle’s success and notes that’s part of a give-and-take effort within the space. “There’s a lot of really highly qualified, really talented people that are running collectives across the country. For us, that’s an unbelievable resource and we've been able to connect with those peers through The Collective Association and find ways to pick their brain on ways that we can get better. And they do the same with us. We love that camaraderie about it, and our coaches ask those questions. ‘Hey, what's that school doing?’ Or ‘Hey, how are they doing this?’ And I love that because that means our coaches are paying attention and understanding this ever-evolving landscape of NIL.” More from Furman. The Iowa vs. UConn NCAA Women’s Basketball semifinal game drew 14.2M viewers and peaked at 17M, setting a new record for the most-watched women’s college basketball game in history. The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch puts it in perspective: This game tops every World Series game last year, every NBA Finals game last year, every Daytona 500 since 2013, every Masters final round viewership since 2013 and all but five college football games in 2023. Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis predicts today’s title game could reach 20M, while SBJ’s Austin Karp estimates the tally will be 18M. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports on the IRS letter sent to NIL collectives back in January as “watchdog publication” Tax Notes obtained a copy, leading former IRS lawyer & non-profit expert Phil Hackney to remark: “This seems to be an indictment against [the tax-exempt status of] all the collectives and should mean the other collectives lose their status as well. [...] It puts a real burden upon the professionals who are advising these organizations. Can they in good faith give legal advice or auditing advice that the organization continues to qualify? In my own, personal opinion, I wouldn’t sign off on one.” Further, Hackney believes collectives that have already received 501(c)(3) status were due to an administrative error. More. The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner talks to attorney Eric MacMichael, who represented Oregon State & Washington State in its lawsuit against the departing Pac-12 members, and MacMichael says a key focus on the process was accounting for future potential litigation results, such as the House v. NCAA case. Specifically, exiting institutions have been released from liabilities, except for a four-page section of the settlement agreement that’s redacted, but clearly includes the House situation. MacMichael: “The House case was front and center in our thinking. We had to address that. It’s an existential case for the NCAA and all the (named) conferences. And I don’t think it’s going to get resolved in the immediate future.” (link)

San Francisco will discontinue its men’s and women’s tennis programs at the conclusion of this season. AD Larry Williams’ statement, in part: “USF's tennis programs have represented the university exceedingly well over many decades. Our campus community and alumni body are proud of the current team and their hard work, commitment, and achievements in Division I and West Coast Conference competition.” The programs cost $1M+ to operate annually, according to Williams. Scholarships for current players will be honored. (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter had some fun on X on Friday to celebrate Men’s Basketball HC Chris Beard staying in Oxford. Posting photos of his turkey hunt with Realtree VP of Strategic Partnerships and Digital Host Tyler Jordan, Carter compared the “beard” of a turkey to Coach Beard. Carter: “Pretty good Friday morning. Brought this beard back from Georgia @TylerJordan @Realtree and kept another Beard rolling with @OleMissMBB @ChrisBeard. Ole Miss Athletics isn’t messing around folks. We’re here to win and win big!” (link)

NC State headlining Men’s Basketball student-athlete DJ Burns’ magical run came to an end last night in Phoenix, but Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports Burns’ sensational March Madness play - plus his engaging personality - have generated “mid-six figures in deals the past three weeks.” Inkstars Creative Group brand manager Jameisha Trice-Rayborn represents Burns: “It’s been complete pandemonium. Deal after deal, meetings with everybody. [...] We’ve seen all the Cinderella runs, but I don’t think we’ve had … one where a player emerged with this level of impact.” (link)

Last night’s Georgia-Mississippi State baseball game in Starkville was marked by one of the most confusing situations in recent memory. The top of the 8th ended with UGA’s Dillon Carter being thrown out at the plate after trying to score from first on a double, followed by some extracurriculars by MSU catcher Johnny Long. Members of both teams spilled onto the field, but the incident quickly dissipated, only to see the game be delayed by 42 minutes for the umpires & the SEC review team in Birmingham to eject a slew of players, some of whom were very clearly acting as peacemakers. Georgia went on to win 3-2 after both lineups were overhauled due to the ejections and the kicker is there’s still not full clarity identifying all those ejected and if all involved will face further suspensions. The SEC Network team of Dave Neal and Chris Burke were equally left in the dark as the game resumed and had to piece together who was playing where as the action unfolded. An odd sequence that will surely lead to - at minimum - changes to communication between umpires on the field and media covering the event to accurately inform the viewing public of developments, as well as how student-athletes actively diffusing a tense situation can be ejected. Coaches Corner…
+ Fresno State hires Clovis West High School Head Coach Vance Walberg as its next Men’s Basketball HC. Walberg has been in his current role since 2016, but has experience in both the college and NBA levels, with stops at Pepperdine (HC 2006-08) and UMass (AC 2008-11). (link)
+ Former Michigan Basketball HC Juwan Howard sits down for a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn. Howard opens up about his surgery, explaining that he learned blood clots were found in his lungs and an unruptured aneurysm was discovered in his aorta. The blood clots, he says, were saving his life. “I was scared. But I never admitted that. I didn’t show it in front of my wife or my family, and I never showed it in front of my staff.” Doctors implored Howard to take the entire season off, and Howard admits now that “if I could go back and do it all over again, I would’ve taken time off to really get help. I should’ve listened more to the doctors and my wife. There were days that I wouldn’t get any sleep and could barely get out of bed, but I’d go in there and try to act like I was fine.” Howard also shares his side of the altercation with former Strength & Conditioning Coach Jon Sanderson and explains when he heard his son, Jace, yelling at an athletic trainer, he shouted at him to stop. “I’m his father, right? He knew that look and knew that voice, right? So he stopped immediately.” Sanderson, according to Howard, got involved anyway, saying to Jace: “You don’t talk to a superior like that.” Howard: “Which is true. I agree. But then he kept going. Jon said, ‘Jace, that’s bullsh–!’ You don’t talk to a superior that way, this is the sh— I’m talking about.’” Sanderson says he encountered the same type of behavior from another player, and Howard recalls telling him: “Yo, Jon, chill the f— out. I told you I got it. … I’m like three weeks into returning to the facility and have an incision on my chest. Also, I’m not stupid. After the Wisconsin situation, I said I would never, ever, ever put myself in a situation like that again…and second, that I would never put our players in an unsafe environment, and the last part, to never embarrass the entire university and my family. So am I gonna try to fight (Sanderson)? (He’s) 6-8 and strong as sh–.” As for how his tenure ended, Howard says he’s “never going to be bitter about the situation,” adding: “I’m a Michigan man through and through. … I’m just sad I’m leaving a lot sooner than I expected to.” Lots more. WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss managing sports wagering and its impact on student-athletes, the structure of the WAC Basketball Conference Tournament seeding and the impact that plays on future scheduling and more. Thornton explains that sports gambling is a frequent topic of discussion with student-athletes and tells Banker: “It's not stopping. Our young people both on the men's and women's side are gambling across campuses at a rate that is unprecedented in a lot of ways, and we're naive to think that that doesn't penetrate to our student-athletes – that they're not gambling to a certain extent.” Thornton also notes it’s naive to think those who are gambling around student-athletes don't have an impact on their day-to-day lives. That said, Thornton is “probably a proponent more of maybe taking off some of the strings, especially around professional sports gambling. I think that is much different than college sports gambling. Now, there's a lot of tentacles there, and I'm certainly not saying we need to rip the Band-Aid off, but I think that we have to explore that in a different way than we have in the past because student-athletes and young people are going to gamble and how can we make sure that we maybe provide the proper amount of balance there?” Full Q&A on Connect. Texas Tech FAR Brian Shannon and former Nebraska FAR Josephine Potuto posit in an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed that rather than establish educational trust funds for student-athletes at universities in a new subdivision, as outlined in Project DI, a “better approach is simply to set a budget threshold for inclusion that could be adjusted upward over time. [NCAA President Charlie] Baker noted that 59 Division I institutions spend more than $100M annually on their athletics programs. We’re not saying that’s the magic number, but we think that some such threshold is needed for the new subdivision to succeed.” In their argument against a trust fund-based approach, Shannon and Potuto worry that “medium-resourced institutions still might stretch their resources to reach it. They might cut sports and opportunities for athletes, which would be deeply unfortunate.” They go on to contend that “no viable reform appears possible unless a new subdivision is created. It is an idea well past its time, and we applaud Baker for taking the first step. But we also think the NCAA’s approach is, once again, much too slow. It should not take until January 2025 just to create the subdivision. The Division I Board need only embrace—finally—the concept of a new subdivision and set the criteria for entry. At that point, the new subdivision needs to get to work—quickly.” (link)

Bruin Capital CEO George Pyne tells CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin he believes women’s sports have “real traction,” adding: “When you take a step back globally, soccer is on fire both in the United States from a women’s standpoint and internationally. You see college basketball, even women's volleyball, but I'm surprised by the traction that the pro women's hockey league has. So, just the tailwind in women’s sports that hasn't been there before and it's great to see.” (link)
