The NAIA Council of Presidents unanimously approved a policy to require student-athletes to compete according to their assigned gender at birth. NAIA President/CEO Jim Carr says of the measure, which passed in a 20-0 vote: "We know there are a lot of different opinions out there. For us, we believed our first responsibility was to create fairness and competition in the NAIA. ... We also think it aligns with the reasons Title IX was created. You're allowed to have separate but equal opportunities for women to compete." Carr also tells CBS’ Dennis Dodd that student-athletes who are no longer eligible for women's competition could still participate in men's sports. “It's important to know that the male sports are open to anyone.” The policy doesn't apply to team activities like practices, exhibition games and scrimmages. St. Ambrose President/Council of Presidents Chair Amy Novak: “The task force spent nearly two years reviewing research, meeting with experts to better understand potential policy challenges, and obtaining feedback from multiple membership groups. With this policy, the NAIA has made its best effort to allow for the inclusion of transgender athletes in any way which does not impact the competitive fairness of women's sports. Our priority is to protect the integrity of women's athletics and allow them equal opportunity to succeed." (link)

The DIII Membership Committee is recommending the Management Council amend the new member application to incorporate exploratory year criteria into the provisional membership application, allowing provisional members the potential to bypass the exploratory year. The Membership Committee also recommends the Championships Committee consider allowing provisional and reclassifying members to count towards championships criteria for opponents in the year they begin full compliance with DIII rules and will ask the membership for feedback on a waiver for incoming DIII members to shorten their reclassification period to two years, provided they are complying with DIII bylaws. Middlebury opened its upgraded Baseball and Softball complex this weekend, concluding a multi-year project that included synthetic turf, covered dugouts, batting cages, bullpens and more. Since the NCAA’s call for states to ban prop betting on college games and athletes, Ohio, Maryland, Vermont and Louisiana have done so, joining nine other states who already prohibited such wagers. Meanwhile, Wyoming and Michigan are also looking into the issue, and according to XLMedia’s Robert Linnehan, regulators in New Jersey, Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana say that even though the NCAA has not approached them, they are willing to consider the policy change. Straight to the Point’s Steve Ruddock subsequently asks: “The lingering question is does the NCAA stop with a ban on prop bets, or does it continue to chip away at college betting markets? The stated goal is to prevent player harassment and maintain game integrity. However, these bets are easily placed offshore, a far greater threat to integrity. And, as I’ve noted regarding player harassment, ‘If you bet on a team and a specific player makes a mistake or misses a key shot, isn’t a deranged bettor still going to blame the player?’” (link)
