NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt Q&As with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about the future of college hoops and says of possibly merging the men’s and women’s Final Fours into one big event that the “basketball committees considered that as part of the recommendations from the Kaplan report and gave it a lot of consideration a couple of years ago before awarding the next cycle of men's and women’s Final Four sites.” The committees “decided unanimously that wasn't the direction they wanted to go in. Both events were doing well, have great trajectory and want to continue to see them grow independent of playing at the same site at the same weekend, same time. Any consideration now would have to be early in the next decade, but always going to continue to think creatively and consider all alternatives.” While WBB popularity is soaring, Gavitt acknowledges there is opportunity for the tournament, particularly in the opening rounds. “How do we take advantage of those first couple of weekends, grow the women’s championship more, continue to grow the men's championship to the extent we can? The men's championship, we're mostly at like 95% capacity every place we go now. So how do we kind of build some of the things around those games? There may be some opportunity with ancillary events that we don't currently do as much except for the Final Four sites.” On potentially moving the transfer portal window to after the Elite 8, especially in light of the spate of NIT opt-outs this year: “That'd be a membership decision, of course, but that impacts not just the NIT and any other postseason event, but also impacts the experience, potentially, during the NCAA championships. … There's good arguments both ways because there's 360 Division I members. Most of them are done playing by late February, early March. But it is something that's challenging to manage for coaches when they're trying to play for a national championship and their players are getting that experience. So it’s TBD. I think we'll get a good fresh look again.” (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz says the moment women’s basketball is having is unlike even the dynastic period at Connecticut, where she served as COO/SWA from 2016-18: “I think it is because you have multiple stars in the game, the media attention and if there’s been another Caitlin Clark, who has generational talent and personality and passion and fire that has captivated (the audience), we just didn’t get to see that previously. Probably because it was before the advent of social media and all the other things. So it’s surreal, just the reach that this has had for Iowa in particular.” As it relates to building on that momentum, Goetz notes that aside from Clark, “women’s basketball right now is being played at a really, really high level. I think people that are tuned in are attracted to that. They’ve seen games where you’ve got a lot of talented athletes, incredible passing, and they’re more athletic than they’ve ever been. … It’s our job to make sure in what I just described that we capture that and articulate that message to our fans, and market that to our fans so we can continue to sell tickets at a really high level and attract people to the games. I think this time is different. I think this is a different moment nationally. Are we going to have the secondary market tickets going for thousands of dollars? Maybe not. But we’re going to have an exciting team to watch, and I think we’ve brought some fans in that are going to continue to want to be a part of that.” Goetz acknowledges that Carver-Hawkeye Arena could use some attention, “and I do think that’s a critical facilities project for us. Not in the sense of the arms race — not that we don’t want it to be beautiful, and one of the best in the Big Ten, for sure — but this isn’t about chasing that. This is about, how do we make sure we have a facility that best serves our fans and our student-athletes and our students?” Full Q&A. (link)

Fox Sports President of Insights & Analytics Michael Mulvihill doesn’t “even need to see the men’s final number to confirm that this is easily the most-watched year ever for men’s and women’s March Madness combined. Caps a year of record-high viewing of college sports. In the end the ratio of men’s tournament to women’s tournament viewing will be something like 2.7 to 1. Last year it was 5.3 to 1. In the year that previously had the most combined viewing (2015) it was over 15 to 1.” (link)

Auburn inks a new 10-year apparel partnership with Nike, effective in July 2025. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey and Eben Novy-Williams report the Tigers’ deal with Under Armour has decreased in value by $8.6M due to its equity component. As part of the 2015 arrangement, the school agreed to accept $10M in Under Armour stock to be paid out over the life of the contract, “a bet that the apparel company would continue its rapid growth, therefore increasing the school’s compensation.” Unfortunately, the deal was signed a week after UA’s stock hit its all-time high of $54.70. The stock is currently trading for around $6.80. (link); Auburn x Nike video. (link)

Leon County Judge John C. Cooper has denied the ACC’s motion to postpone FSU’s lawsuit against the conference as the North Carolina suit continues. Per the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker: “[Cooper] said an affidavit from Virginia’s president helped the judge determine this is ‘forum shopping’ by the ACC in the North Carolina suit. The presumption that the conference filed first and gets its choice of venue might not matter here,” as Cooper says: “I’m more persuaded by the argument of FSU on that point.” Cooper also cites issues of sovereign immunity for FSU as it relates to litigation in another state and says he has issues with the ACC-ESPN contracts and whether they’re public records under Florida law. Baker notes that “under a previous FSU case (involving the ACC), secret or secretly filed documents with FSU should be public. This matters here because of the argument that the ACC’s deals with ESPN might be public in Florida. In that case, Florida courts might have more authority or unique authority compared to North Carolina.” Baker also reports that “we have some clarity on numbers here.” If FSU leaves, it owes the ACC between $130M and $140M. But the ACC would retain the TV rights to FSU’s home games “no longer than the end of 2036.” Cooper to ACC attorneys: “You keep the media rights. But if they wanted to buy the media rights, then you'd have to negotiate that price?" An ACC attorney responds: “Or, we would sell the media rights to somebody else and they would receive portions of that, just the same way they do now." (link)

As NCAA President Charlie Baker continues to advocate for states to ban prop bets on college games, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown notes there are those who believe doing so will only push gamblers to illegal bookmakers. U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt acknowledged that possibility last week to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, and Gambling.com Group’s Christopher Boan tells Brown the college basketball regular season is already considered a very niche gambling property compared to the NBA or NFL and that prop bets are a tiny niche within that niche. Depending on the state, Boan says college prop bets might account for “between 1-2% of all bets.” The Ohio Casino Control Commission said that college prop bets accounted for 2.2% of wagers. Consequently, Brown posits that “unless this 2% of wagers accounted for a massively disproportionate percentage of social media abuse and integrity risks, banning it might not lead to the outcomes the NCAA wants…just like, say, banning Hard Mountain Dew won’t end alcoholism.” Brown goes on to submit that the “deluge of gambling advertising and content thrown at consumers over the last two years, coupled with people just not knowing how to act” is most likely the systemic issue that must be addressed. “Media companies, hemorrhaging money thanks to Google and Facebook kneecapping the advertising industry, gleefully accepted as much sportsbook money as they could, allowing gaming coverage to permeate much of the sports reading, and viewing, experience. When you couple that relentless advertising with the ease of smartphones and ad copy relentlessly optimized for re-engagement…you not only risk swaths of consumers who could be at risk for problem gambling behaviors, but you degrade the core sports product itself.” (link)

By winning the national championship last night, Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley will receive at least $1.8M in bonuses for the season. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that cutting down the nets for the second straight year comes with a $500K bonus, while winning the Big East regular season and conference crowns were worth $100K apiece. Hurley also picked up picked up $50K for UConn’s NCAA first-round win, $100K for reaching the Sweet 16 and $200K for each subsequent victory before Monday night. For finishing in the top 10, Hurley earns another $150K to go along with the $100K he’ll collect for being named the Naismith Coach of the Year. (link); South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley picks up $680K in bonuses for the season, according to Berkowitz, who notes Staley “gained $100K for sweeping the SEC regular season and tournament titles in the same season; $500K for the NCAA title; and $25K apiece for SEC and national coach-of-the-year honors.” Additionally, Iowa HC Lisa Bluder will earn $310K in incentives along with a pair of one-year contract extensions and a $150K pay increase that is set to become effective July 1. Also from Berkowitz: “Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma had the third-highest season bonus total at $262,500. … He was followed by North Carolina State’s Wes Moore, whose total increased to $200K on Monday when he added $50K for the Wolfpack finishing among the top 15 teams in either of the final polls (they were No. 4 in both). N.C. State lost to South Carolina in the national semifinals.” Other season bonus totals: Mississippi's Yolett McPhee-McCuin ($105K); Kansas State's Jeff Mittie ($80K); North Carolina's Courtney Banghart ($80K); Nebraska's Amy Williams ($71,500); Oklahoma's Jennie Baranczyk ($65K); Ohio State's Kevin McGuff ($60K); Alabama's Kristy Curry, Kansas' Jeff Schneider and Texas A&M's Joni Taylor ($50K each). UConn Men’s Basketball goes back-to-back in convincing fashion as its second half surge over Purdue led to another double-digit victory, its 12th in as many games over the last two tourneys. Huskies HC Dan Hurley: “Obviously it's a special run. Yeah, I mean, s***, we're going to try to replicate it again. We're going to maintain a championship culture. We're bringing in some very talented high school freshmen. Our returning players, through player development, will take a big jump. We'll strategically add through the portal. I don't think that we're going anywhere.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker in a meeting with media members ahead of last night’s men’s hoops national championship again brought up the danger of prop bets: “Did any of you notice how much time was spent on cable TV about Caitlin Clark’s prop performance (after the) first (national semifinals) game leading into the second game? Was that really what we should be talking about in the middle of a women’s Final Four? I think the answer for that for most people is no. … The prop-betting piece is enormously problematic for student-athletes and I’ve had a lot of them say that to me.” Baker also noted the NCAA continues to work on a consumer protection package to help student-athletes and their families better understand the NIL market. Part of that package includes a deal database, which Baker explains isn’t meant to be used for individualized data on specific deals as much as a general income scale. The NCAA is also creating a platform that Baker said is similar to Yelp that will give families a way to discuss NIL third parties and their trustworthiness. “I think this is the first step on our part to try and make sure that all the players in this space get held accountable and we do more to provide more transparency.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports the DI Council can “adopt emergency legislation for a new transfer eligibility rule at its April 17-18 meeting. Proposed legislation would allow all undergraduate athletes to transfer and play immediately as long as they meet specific academic requirements.” The legislation states there is no limit on the number of times a student-athlete can transfer, and Auerbach notes transfer windows would still exist in the new system. “You still can’t transfer mid-year and play for a second school in the same athletic season. This new NCAA transfer rule proposal comes four months after a West Virginia judge issued a TRO that was converted into a preliminary injunction to stop the NCAA from enforcing its rule barring athletes from transferring multiple times and playing right away.” (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds: “As a result of litigation around transfers, the Council can adopt legislation to permit athletes to transfer and play immediately if they meet academic requirements. This was expected. Within the transfer agenda item, the Council is also expected to review creating a separate concept to APR called ‘Transfer APR’ that tracks transfer academic progress as well as a ‘Graduation Passport.’” (link)

Sunday’s women’s hoops South Carolina-Iowa national championship delivered an average of 18.7M viewers to ABC. The game peaked at 24.7M and represents an 89% YoY increase and a 285% increase over 2022. The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch shares some perspective, noting the game topped every World Series game since Game 7 of the 2019 World Series, every NBA Finals game since Game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals, every Daytona 500 since 2006, every Masters final round viewership since 2001, and all but four college football games in 2023. (link, link); According to Front Office Sports, the game drew a larger audience than any of last year’s non-NFL sporting events except Michigan’s football victory over Ohio State, which averaged 19M. (link); Meanwhile, SBJ’s Austin Karp points out the game had higher viewership than all but two nights of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and every Kentucky Derby dating back to 1983. (link)

Women’s Sports Network President Carol Stiff, who previously served as VP of Programming and Acquisitions at ESPN, tells Puck’s John Ourand that continued advertiser support is needed to maintain the momentum of women’s hoops. “We need investors to come in and demand better windows for exposure. Until that happens, I fear that it could fall back. But I think the pressure is on now.” Ourand notes that advertisers are spending more on women’s sports this year, “yet Stiff told me about meetings where clients admitted that they didn’t have any sort of tangible strategy, even if they felt aligned with a sport centered on the notion of scholar athletes—female basketball players, after all, don’t usually leave school early for the pros, seldom employ the transfer portal, and haven’t fully exploited the opportunities afforded by NIL.” Stiff: “I kept hearing that this season was just a blip, and the women’s game is going to go south, back to where it was. I don’t think it is. You could feel the momentum.” (link)

Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale during an NABC panel in Phoenix talked about how little discussion there is about the potential end of amateurism: “It’s interesting how much liability is referenced by college athletics leaders when you bring up topics like employment or unemployment, and you bring up topics like revenue sharing, and you bring up topics like athletes organizing. There’s a lot of sensitivity in public forums, especially by college athletics leaders, because of the ‘risk’ they have in talking about these things and how even things they say in a private conversation could be used in a deposition.” Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich: “In other words, general counsels at universities have warned athletic departments against saying anything about enhanced athlete compensation, employment, or unionization, because those comments could be used against them in one of many ongoing legal battles threatening amateurism.” While that risk is real, Cavale asserts the bigger risk is “not figuring out the future.” (link)

More from Cavale as he hosts TCU women’s basketball student-athlete Sedona Prince on his Now It’s Legal podcast and talks about her role as a plaintiff in the House v. NCAA lawsuit. “When I transferred from the University of Texas (to Oregon), I got an injury and I transferred for health and safety reasons and just felt like there was a lot of malpractice at my university. And I didn't feel like I’d been treated as I should have been as a student-athlete. I felt very, very upset about it, and so as I said, transferred, I didn't get to play again – the NCAA ruled me ineligible – and so more of that anger, I was just like, ‘Man, all these adults around me, they're supposed to take care of me…and it's so unfair and this is not how it should be.’ And so my mom had the opportunity she reached out to one of the people in the College Players Association connected with us and he said, ‘Hey, would you like to be a plaintiff in this House v. NCAA lawsuit?’ I had no idea about what is NIL, what does it even mean? But I’ve already been taken advantage of so much that I'm upset at the NCAA, [so I said] absolutely, sign me up.” Prince says she “constantly get[s] documents seized and I’m giving them my own information into NIL and what my deals look like. … And then I had a deposition with the NCAA, sat in front of them for seven hours straight, in front of four NCAA lawyers and was deposed and asked about NIL and my thoughts and everything, which was a crazy experience.” Full podcast. Harvard AD Erin McDermott acknowledges the lack of an NIL collective may have a negative impact on recruiting but says she is willing to accept that rather than “compromise” athletics and academics. “If it means we end up with, I don’t know, a couple less recruits over a period of time that might have come but now they won’t, I’m willing to take that risk.” Overall, McDermott hasn’t observed NIL playing a major role in the Ivy League so far: “I think it’s kind of early to call it doomsday, for sure.” McDermott also addresses the possibility of a team forming a union and says: “If a team were to come forward with that interest, I think we would certainly allow for it.” However, she hopes players view their involvement in athletics at Harvard as something they “love to do” and adds: “I would hope that they don’t view it like a job.” (link)

Illinois State Interim AD Jeri Beggs encourages fans to donate to the Empower the Nest collective: “If our athletic programs want to remain competitive, we need support for NIL funds. The days of a school's name being enough to land a recruit are long gone. I know NIL may be new and different to many of you, but it isn't going away and we need to attack this head on! I know you want to see the Redbirds compete for championships and showcase Illinois State University on a national stage. … We are determined to adapt to changes in the collegiate landscape and NIL must be a priority for us to be competitive.” (link)

Following the NAIA’s announcement “effectively banning transgender athletes for all women’s sports other than for two co-ed sports, competitive cheer and competitive dance,” Sportico’s Michael McCann and Daniel Libit note that “an athlete at an NAIA school whose eligibility to play a sport—and potentially their eligibility for an athletic scholarship—has been lost on account of the new rule could sue the NAIA. The athlete would likely seek a restraining order that would permit them to play and argue their exclusion violates constitutional safeguards for equal protection and due process.” While the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to weigh in on transgender athletes’ eligibility, “in Bostock v. Clayton County (2021), the Court interpreted Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit employment-related discrimination based on sexual orientation and sexual identity.” An NAIA spokesperson tells Sportico: “The NAIA understands that legal action being taken to challenge the policy is a possibility. [B]ut this policy is one our membership and board felt like was the right decision.” (link)

Central Michigan launches the Maroon & Gold BOLD campaign, which seeks to raise $25M over five years. Funds will be focused on supporting three areas: student-athlete experience, fan experience and being performance leaders in the MAC. Chippewas AD Amy Folan: "This campaign pulls us together to fuel a future that serves today's student-athletes, while positioning the university to continue its history of excellence in the MAC. It will create an energy that unifies us all in support of our teams and Central Michigan University as a whole. … We must continuously improve the quality of academic and athletic opportunities for our student-athletes, increase fan engagement to serve our 245,000 alumni worldwide and to expand the resources that promote athletic excellence within the MAC.” (link)

Richmond city officials want to issue general obligation bonds backed by the city to fund a new MiLB stadium and future home of VCU baseball at the Diamond District. Doing so would cut costs by $200M; however, if the project fails to generate the expected revenue, the city would have to pay off the debt. Richmond Chief Administrative Officer Lincoln Saunders: "We think the risk is low because of the strength of the market and the strength of the Squirrels.” With a lower interest rate on the general obligation bonds, the cost of the stadium will total roughly $280M, compared to about $500M under the old plan.
