SBJ’s Ben Portnoy catches up with Connecticut AD David Benedict and Purdue AD Mike Bobinski to hear their thoughts on “managing donor fatigue and threading the needle between aspirations of enhanced facilities with the growing importance of NIL.” Benedict explains that “we're not trying to compete to be in a place where it's the biggest and craziest facility or it's the most money. We want to be competitive. We have to strike a balance as to what that means. But at the University of Connecticut, we want people that want to come to the University of Connecticut that value the opportunity to come work with our coaches and the rest of our student athletes and university versus ‘Hey, it's just about how much are you going to pay?’” Meanwhile, Bobinski says it’s a challenge for everyone “because you want it all, to be honest with you. It all matters, and to say that only this matters is really not true. Everybody can say, ‘Well, all I want is NIL,’ but if you let everything else go to seed, then that's not enough. You’ve got to be able to really walk that fine line of saying, ‘We'd love you to consider being engaged over here, because that's important in today's environment, but these other sort of foundational things that have existed for years are still there, and we still need your help.’” (link)

The ACC released a statement on yesterday’s court ruling in Leon County: “While we respect the court’s decision, we strongly disagree with its determination surrounding our requested stay in Florida, especially following the North Carolina court’s decision. We are examining our options as it relates to next steps.” (link); More from the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker on the hearing, as he notes Florida State attorney Peter Rush asserted the total figure to leave the ACC wouldn’t be $572M and would more likely be closer to $700M. Baker: “Whatever the specific number would be, it’s massive. That was part of Rush’s argument: If a Florida entity risks losing or paying almost three-quarters of a billion dollars, that decision needs to come from a Florida court.” Rush: “This is Florida State’s money. This is Florida State’s team. This is Florida State’s media rights.” As reported yesterday, Judge John C. Cooper ultimately, per Baker, “agreed enough to decide that the state of Florida has a major stake in this litigation’s outcome.” As such, the proceedings will continue in North Carolina and Florida. Cooper did not hear arguments for and against the conference’s motion to dismiss FSU’s case or matters related to discovery and will now hear those on April 22. (link)

After 38 seasons leading the Cardinal and 45 seasons as a head coach, Stanford Women’s Basketball HC Tara VanDerveer announces her retirement: "I've been spoiled to coach the best and brightest at one of the world's foremost institutions for nearly four decades. Coupled with my time at Ohio State and Idaho, and as head coach of the United States National Team, it has been an unforgettable ride. The joy for me was in the journey of each season, seeing a group of young women work hard for each other and form an unbreakable bond. Winning was a byproduct. I've loved the game of basketball since I was a little girl, and it has given me so much throughout my life. I hope I've been able to give at least a little bit back." VanDerveer will continue working with the athletic department in an advisory capacity. All signs point to Assoc. HC Kate Paye taking over the program. (link)

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship between Connecticut and Purdue brought in 14.823M viewers, marking the first time in history the women’s title game drew more viewers than the men’s. “But that won’t be reflected in the money each side earned for TV rights: $6.5M for the women’s tournament and $873M for the men’s,” the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman and Isabella Simonetti point out. While questions are likely to persist over the value of the NCAA’s championship deal with ESPN, Bachman and Simonetti note that “valuing media-rights deals is challenging—it’s hard to know when there will be a sudden surge in interest like the one women’s college basketball is enjoying. And while the final rounds of a tournament are important, sustained viewership interest over dozens of earlier games can drive prices up. The men’s entire tournament averaged 9.9M viewers per game, far surpassing the women’s, which attracted an average of 2.2M viewers.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes adds: “You have these moments in all sports where you have this transcending figure come about. And when they leave, the building’s still there. Things have been advanced, but things don’t ever quite look the same.” (link, link); Meanwhile, the men’s Final Four matchups averaged 12.8M viewers across TBS, TNT and TruTV, up 4% over last year’s semifinal matchups on CBS. SBJ’s Austin Karp: ‘The men’s doubleheader also topped the 11M viewers that the women’s doubleheader averaged on ESPN/ESPN2 on Friday night. UConn-Alabama in the late window Saturday night delivered the best audience of the night with 14.1M viewers, up 10% from 12.9M for UConn-Miami in the same window last year.” Purdue-NC State averaged 11.4M. ESPN VP of Brand Strategy and Content Research Flora Kelly joins the Sports Media podcast with Richard Deitsch and says younger fans’ sports consumption is “very intersectional. I think when I was growing up and maybe with a lot of Gen X or even older millennials, we defined ourselves in life in very binary terms, like: I love sports. I love music. But for the younger fan, their identities are very intersectional. So, within that, sports plays a role, but it plays a role within their other interests. So, what they're doing on a day to day basis is, yes, they're watching live games, you see that in the numbers…but they're also utilizing social media a lot and they're using it for sports and that's one area that I'm really proud of where we really sort of advised ESPN to get aggressive on it and our leadership took the chance and that's why you see ESPN is the number one brand on TikTok. … It’s because we realize we have to be where fans are to generate relevancy not just for our brand, but to drive events in and of themselves. And I think, Richard, if you think about just this past year and the rapid growth of women's college basketball but then even like college football and with what Deion Sanders was able to do with Colorado…I don’t think that happens without social media. It creates a hyper-awareness for events and these cultural touchstones within sports that can now I think drive a rating and drive audience to a level that we haven't really seen before.” Full podcast. Houston AD Chris Pezman talks about the importance of culture in the NIL/transfer portal era and cites Men’s Basketball HC Kelvin Sampson as an example: “Coach Sampson is one of the few guys that can coach the way he coaches. He leans into those kids really hard, but equally so they love those kids up so much off the court and in every other aspect of their lives. And he talks about how many kids he talks to every day, former players that come back and how they interact with him and the staff. … That, to me, is what kind of supersedes NIL and the quick reaction to jump if things aren't going your way, and that's what we are building around. … One thing that gets lost in all this is potentially our whole team could come back. We’ve got a lot of work to do and NIL is a big part of that conversation, which kind of really gets interesting. With pro sports now if you're a lower draft pick, you can have enough NIL money then to give a kid a decision whether they want to go or continue their college. And you're seeing older teams now in college, and that's what I think gives us a huge amount of success is that blend of maturity with enough talented youth.” (link)
|
Cliff Wood, board of directors president for the James Madison-focused Montpelier Collective says gauging the NIL market continues to be tricky: “It’s hard to match up what the players say they got and what the schools say they got. The answer is probably somewhere in between. If you ask our coaches, we’re probably light. If you ask me, I don’t think these kids get what they say they are getting offered. All of our offers are in writing and we have a contract. I walk them through the contract. I walk them through the tax implications and make sure they understand what they are signing and how to do their community service to get their stipend.” New Dukes Men’s Basketball HC Preston Spradlin: “We’ve done a great job of selling ourselves and selling the people and not necessarily coming in and pointing to the resources and all these types of things. The rabbit’s got a gun now, so I’m excited to take what we do on a daily basis and have a few more bullets in the chamber.” Wood adds that NIL is not as important of a recruiting tool as it is at Power 5 schools but notes: “Every NIL is different, and Virginia is different from other states. How we originally set up our NIL was based on state law, which supersedes crappy NCAA regulations. So a lot of it was just explaining how we worked to all the candidates, everybody who asked, both in football and basketball.” (link)

Hall outlines current fundraising projects, the vision and structure of the role as well as the Rice culture. He also explains how the Owls determine fit on the development team: “Somebody that will not only embrace what we have going, but also come with new perspective and ideas to tweak and change and continue to move forward, somebody that’s very forward-thinking but overall somebody that has a passion for what they do and a love for working with people and trying to build on something bigger than themselves.” Full Q&A on Connect. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt Q&As with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about the future of college hoops and says of possibly merging the men’s and women’s Final Fours into one big event that the “basketball committees considered that as part of the recommendations from the Kaplan report and gave it a lot of consideration a couple of years ago before awarding the next cycle of men's and women’s Final Four sites.” The committees “decided unanimously that wasn't the direction they wanted to go in. Both events were doing well, have great trajectory and want to continue to see them grow independent of playing at the same site at the same weekend, same time. Any consideration now would have to be early in the next decade, but always going to continue to think creatively and consider all alternatives.” While WBB popularity is soaring, Gavitt acknowledges there is opportunity for the tournament, particularly in the opening rounds. “How do we take advantage of those first couple of weekends, grow the women’s championship more, continue to grow the men's championship to the extent we can? The men's championship, we're mostly at like 95% capacity every place we go now. So how do we kind of build some of the things around those games? There may be some opportunity with ancillary events that we don't currently do as much except for the Final Four sites.” On potentially moving the transfer portal window to after the Elite 8, especially in light of the spate of NIT opt-outs this year: “That'd be a membership decision, of course, but that impacts not just the NIT and any other postseason event, but also impacts the experience, potentially, during the NCAA championships. … There's good arguments both ways because there's 360 Division I members. Most of them are done playing by late February, early March. But it is something that's challenging to manage for coaches when they're trying to play for a national championship and their players are getting that experience. So it’s TBD. I think we'll get a good fresh look again.” (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz says the moment women’s basketball is having is unlike even the dynastic period at Connecticut, where she served as COO/SWA from 2016-18: “I think it is because you have multiple stars in the game, the media attention and if there’s been another Caitlin Clark, who has generational talent and personality and passion and fire that has captivated (the audience), we just didn’t get to see that previously. Probably because it was before the advent of social media and all the other things. So it’s surreal, just the reach that this has had for Iowa in particular.” As it relates to building on that momentum, Goetz notes that aside from Clark, “women’s basketball right now is being played at a really, really high level. I think people that are tuned in are attracted to that. They’ve seen games where you’ve got a lot of talented athletes, incredible passing, and they’re more athletic than they’ve ever been. … It’s our job to make sure in what I just described that we capture that and articulate that message to our fans, and market that to our fans so we can continue to sell tickets at a really high level and attract people to the games. I think this time is different. I think this is a different moment nationally. Are we going to have the secondary market tickets going for thousands of dollars? Maybe not. But we’re going to have an exciting team to watch, and I think we’ve brought some fans in that are going to continue to want to be a part of that.” Goetz acknowledges that Carver-Hawkeye Arena could use some attention, “and I do think that’s a critical facilities project for us. Not in the sense of the arms race — not that we don’t want it to be beautiful, and one of the best in the Big Ten, for sure — but this isn’t about chasing that. This is about, how do we make sure we have a facility that best serves our fans and our student-athletes and our students?” Full Q&A. (link)

Fox Sports President of Insights & Analytics Michael Mulvihill doesn’t “even need to see the men’s final number to confirm that this is easily the most-watched year ever for men’s and women’s March Madness combined. Caps a year of record-high viewing of college sports. In the end the ratio of men’s tournament to women’s tournament viewing will be something like 2.7 to 1. Last year it was 5.3 to 1. In the year that previously had the most combined viewing (2015) it was over 15 to 1.” (link)

Auburn inks a new 10-year apparel partnership with Nike, effective in July 2025. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey and Eben Novy-Williams report the Tigers’ deal with Under Armour has decreased in value by $8.6M due to its equity component. As part of the 2015 arrangement, the school agreed to accept $10M in Under Armour stock to be paid out over the life of the contract, “a bet that the apparel company would continue its rapid growth, therefore increasing the school’s compensation.” Unfortunately, the deal was signed a week after UA’s stock hit its all-time high of $54.70. The stock is currently trading for around $6.80. (link); Auburn x Nike video. (link)

Leon County Judge John C. Cooper has denied the ACC’s motion to postpone FSU’s lawsuit against the conference as the North Carolina suit continues. Per the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker: “[Cooper] said an affidavit from Virginia’s president helped the judge determine this is ‘forum shopping’ by the ACC in the North Carolina suit. The presumption that the conference filed first and gets its choice of venue might not matter here,” as Cooper says: “I’m more persuaded by the argument of FSU on that point.” Cooper also cites issues of sovereign immunity for FSU as it relates to litigation in another state and says he has issues with the ACC-ESPN contracts and whether they’re public records under Florida law. Baker notes that “under a previous FSU case (involving the ACC), secret or secretly filed documents with FSU should be public. This matters here because of the argument that the ACC’s deals with ESPN might be public in Florida. In that case, Florida courts might have more authority or unique authority compared to North Carolina.” Baker also reports that “we have some clarity on numbers here.” If FSU leaves, it owes the ACC between $130M and $140M. But the ACC would retain the TV rights to FSU’s home games “no longer than the end of 2036.” Cooper to ACC attorneys: “You keep the media rights. But if they wanted to buy the media rights, then you'd have to negotiate that price?" An ACC attorney responds: “Or, we would sell the media rights to somebody else and they would receive portions of that, just the same way they do now." (link)

As NCAA President Charlie Baker continues to advocate for states to ban prop bets on college games, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown notes there are those who believe doing so will only push gamblers to illegal bookmakers. U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt acknowledged that possibility last week to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, and Gambling.com Group’s Christopher Boan tells Brown the college basketball regular season is already considered a very niche gambling property compared to the NBA or NFL and that prop bets are a tiny niche within that niche. Depending on the state, Boan says college prop bets might account for “between 1-2% of all bets.” The Ohio Casino Control Commission said that college prop bets accounted for 2.2% of wagers. Consequently, Brown posits that “unless this 2% of wagers accounted for a massively disproportionate percentage of social media abuse and integrity risks, banning it might not lead to the outcomes the NCAA wants…just like, say, banning Hard Mountain Dew won’t end alcoholism.” Brown goes on to submit that the “deluge of gambling advertising and content thrown at consumers over the last two years, coupled with people just not knowing how to act” is most likely the systemic issue that must be addressed. “Media companies, hemorrhaging money thanks to Google and Facebook kneecapping the advertising industry, gleefully accepted as much sportsbook money as they could, allowing gaming coverage to permeate much of the sports reading, and viewing, experience. When you couple that relentless advertising with the ease of smartphones and ad copy relentlessly optimized for re-engagement…you not only risk swaths of consumers who could be at risk for problem gambling behaviors, but you degrade the core sports product itself.” (link)

By winning the national championship last night, Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley will receive at least $1.8M in bonuses for the season. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that cutting down the nets for the second straight year comes with a $500K bonus, while winning the Big East regular season and conference crowns were worth $100K apiece. Hurley also picked up picked up $50K for UConn’s NCAA first-round win, $100K for reaching the Sweet 16 and $200K for each subsequent victory before Monday night. For finishing in the top 10, Hurley earns another $150K to go along with the $100K he’ll collect for being named the Naismith Coach of the Year. (link); South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley picks up $680K in bonuses for the season, according to Berkowitz, who notes Staley “gained $100K for sweeping the SEC regular season and tournament titles in the same season; $500K for the NCAA title; and $25K apiece for SEC and national coach-of-the-year honors.” Additionally, Iowa HC Lisa Bluder will earn $310K in incentives along with a pair of one-year contract extensions and a $150K pay increase that is set to become effective July 1. Also from Berkowitz: “Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma had the third-highest season bonus total at $262,500. … He was followed by North Carolina State’s Wes Moore, whose total increased to $200K on Monday when he added $50K for the Wolfpack finishing among the top 15 teams in either of the final polls (they were No. 4 in both). N.C. State lost to South Carolina in the national semifinals.” Other season bonus totals: Mississippi's Yolett McPhee-McCuin ($105K); Kansas State's Jeff Mittie ($80K); North Carolina's Courtney Banghart ($80K); Nebraska's Amy Williams ($71,500); Oklahoma's Jennie Baranczyk ($65K); Ohio State's Kevin McGuff ($60K); Alabama's Kristy Curry, Kansas' Jeff Schneider and Texas A&M's Joni Taylor ($50K each).
