The ECC has named MAAC (DI) Deputy Commissioner Jessica Grasso as its next commissioner. NCAA President Charlie Baker in a meeting with media members ahead of the DI men’s hoops national championship again brought up the danger of prop bets: “Did any of you notice how much time was spent on cable TV about Caitlin Clark’s prop performance (after the) first (national semifinals) game leading into the second game? Was that really what we should be talking about in the middle of a women’s Final Four? I think the answer for that for most people is no. … The prop-betting piece is enormously problematic for student-athletes and I’ve had a lot of them say that to me.” Baker also noted the NCAA continues to work on a consumer protection package to help student-athletes and their families better understand the NIL market. Part of that package includes a deal database, which Baker explains isn’t meant to be used for individualized data on specific deals as much as a general income scale. The NCAA is also creating a platform that Baker said is similar to Yelp that will give families a way to discuss NIL third parties and their trustworthiness. “I think this is the first step on our part to try and make sure that all the players in this space get held accountable and we do more to provide more transparency.” (link, link)

UNC Pembroke rolls out its new five-year athletics strategic plan. The five major goals: “developing successful adults- academically, athletically, & socially; uphold commitment, uphold commitment to inclusivity, compliance, & gender; recruit, develop and retain students, coaches & staff that enhance our programs; proactively tell our story, enhance marketing & community engagement; and grow revenues and resources while enhancing efficiency.” AD Dick Christy: I'm proud of how our staff and community came alongside each other this summer to brainstorm and dream about where we can go in the future. + FAFSA submissions processed by the Department of Education are down 40% year-over-year, with a 27.1% decline in the number of high school seniors who have submitted FAFSA applications. National College Attainment Network Senior Director of Data and Strategic Initiatives Bill DeBaun: “The fact that FAFSA submissions are down 27% year over year — that is still larger than any decline that I have seen in previous years. By both measures, we are in a lot of trouble right now. […] This could have really horrible impacts on postsecondary enrollment this fall.” Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox adds: “The 13 percent difference between completions and submissions implies a larger-than-usual number of form errors this year, which the Education Department said cannot be corrected until processing is completed in mid-April. That could set back colleges’ already-delayed timelines on sending financial aid packages, and give students even less leeway to decide which college to attend based on accurate cost information.” (link, link)
