The AAC held an introductory press conference for incoming Commissioner Tim Pernetti today, during which Pernetti said: “We're going to build on the foundation and the true mission and really the purity of collegiate athletics. We're going to elevate the enterprise – like, get ready, we're going to take some big swings – and we'll innovate and lead in the future. This conference has an opportunity to break new ground. We're going to be proactive. We're going to be disruptive. And we’ll maximize every opportunity that's in front of us, whether it be capitalizing on relationships in private equity, innovative naming rights, creative corporate partnerships, conference-wide NIL resources, maverick postseason models. We're going to turn the conference room at the office into a literal shark tank of fun. Nothing will be off the table. Pernetti also explains: “It’s accretive for our entire industry to move forward together instead of some at the cost of others, and I think that's where we're starting to move, which will be a huge challenge for our conference, but I think we're uniquely positioned in between all that's going on in the hierarchy. You won't hear ‘Power 5’ and ‘Group of 5,’ you're not going to hear those words out of my mouth because, just in general, I think that where we're headed as an industry should refocus itself on what we're actually trying to do rather than just the bottom line.” Full presser. All three games for this weekend’s Men’s Frozen Four in Minneapolis are sold out with resale tickets seeking as much as $10,781, according to Sportico’s Brendan Coffey, who notes regular season attendance for the 64 DI schools eclipsed 3.95M this year, an increase of more than 400K from 2022-23. “More schools are filling more seats too, with attendance hitting 77% of capacity nationally, up from 71% last year.” The sport is experiencing higher TV viewership as well, as Coffey notes this year’s regional finals averaged 254K viewers across all games, up 50% from last year. Last year’s final between Quinnipiac and Minnesota drew 808K on ESPN, double the previous year’s viewership. Coffey: “The apparent uptick in attendance and ratings can probably be credited to the high level of hockey being played at the collegiate level today. Unlike the 1990s and earlier, when NHL prospects would usually go right to the junior leagues to develop their game, college hockey is now packed with NHL talent—at least at the elite levels the teams in this year’s Frozen Four play.” (link)

Iowa recently hosted a panel discussion on whether student-athletes should be considered employees, during which Pepperdine FAR Alicia Jessop asserted any talk of collateral damage with such a decision is “fear-mongering,” adding: “The NCAA continues to unsuccessfully and to the tune of millions of dollars in lobbying fees try to persuade Congress to grant it antitrust immunity. The likelihood of Congress passing such bills is as good as Caitlin Clark not being the No. 1 overall WNBA draft pick.” Husch Blackwell attorney Jason Montgomery disagreed: “It’s clear that the NCAA is on the worst losing streak in sports since the Bills’ four Super Bowl losses. They are terrible at litigating. But current and well-established law in this country says that college athletes are not employees. The Department of Labor says they’re not employees. No federal court has ever said they’re an employee.” To support her point, Jessop argued that any attempt to trim Olympic sports is an excuse, noting that most DI coaches averaged a 15.3% pay increase in 2021, even after the pandemic wreaked havoc on athletic department budgets. She also pointed out that Ohio State in FY23 spent more than $90.7M on coaches and staff salaries while paying $23.8M for athletic scholarships. “Don’t buy that there is no money in the system. This will require the reallocation of funds. Top college coaches will see pay reductions, strength trainers will no longer earn $1 million per year.” Meanwhile, Montgomery contended that college sports’ popularity is at an all-time high, so changing it “makes very little business sense and it makes very little practical sense.” (link)

The Athletic’s Antonio Morales unpacks the unique challenges associated with quarterbacks and the transfer portal and observes that “development often takes a back seat as coaches and players seek instant gratification, and mapping out the future for the position at a school — on both ends of the college football food chain — is nearly impossible.” USC HC Lincoln Riley says it’s “like this constant chess game with everybody trying to figure out what’s the next move and what’s going to be best for everyone.” He also says the state of QB development is “probably not as healthy in the last several years with all the recent developments,” but he acknowledges the blame is shared equally among coaches and players. “You’ve given both these coaches and players another tactic to use and both are. … Some of that comes from, at times, unrealistic expectations of those that aren’t within the walls where people feel like they just have to do something drastic to meet those expectations. But I understand the temptation behind it, especially with that position. There’s so many options and possibilities out there now, I think for everybody, sometimes it’s hard not to take a look across the fence and wonder if it’s better on the other side.” Arizona State HC Kenny Dillingham believes the portal is and will continue to lead to more talented QBs across the country than ever before, and private QB coach Danny Hernandez, whose clients have included Mac Jones and Bryce Young, explains that when Power 5 starting spots are spoken for, “guess what? These Group of 5 schools now are going to end up benefiting from that.” (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell points out that NIL is creating a new cohort of young, wealthy individuals who may find it increasingly difficult to become insured. Burns & Wilcox SVP Bill Gatewood talks about a scenario in which a star QB, for instance, rear-ends another driver. “If you get rear-ended by the quarterback now, you think you won the lottery. You’re going to lawyer up. You’re going to sue that kid for everything you can. As opposed to some other senior who is driving a 12-year-old pickup truck rear-ending you – and you’re just kind of pissed off that you have the aggravation of it, you exchange numbers and everybody goes about their business. Athletes are always targets for lawsuits. It’s just being pushed even younger. It’s a fascinating thing to see what all this NIL money and exposure are going to do.” Gatewood, whose firm works with agents and brokers who work with college and pro athletes, goes on to note: “Go back three or four years ago, insurance carriers didn’t want to write rookie professional [athletes] because they’re really young and for the first time, they just got handed a mountain of money. Are they going to go down the road of getting into fights and car accidents? … Or are they going to turn out to be pretty decent human beings?” Burns & Wilcox VP Heather Posner adds: “I’m worried that the way folks are going to learn is going to be through example. Somebody’s going to have this really lucrative contract. They’re going to get into that car accident, and they’re not going to have the right amount of liability insurance. And they’re going to get sued.” (link)

During its spring football game, UCF will wear helmet decals designed by pediatric patients at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The decals were designed in collaboration with UCF student-athletes who visited the hospital, including DT Lee Hunter, who says: “I’ve never experienced anything like that. It touched my heart and made me get closer to my baby girl, my daughter. Giving back is important because many people are not as fortunate or able to make it on their own. It’s very important for me because you never know what someone’s gone through. Growing up, I had struggles so I know what it’s like. If someone offers you something, it means they care about you. It’s important for me to show that somebody cares.” Hunter’s defensive line will feature black helmets with a purple and yellow Knight head decal, and the other units will feature various multicolored decals, including a Citronaut with red, green and yellow, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel. Knights AD Terry Mohajir: “We’re thrilled to have the kids at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children help put a special touch on this year’s spring game uniforms, as they helped personalize UCF logos for our team helmets, adding their creativity and inspiration for our guys.” (link)

Colorado AD Rick George participated in an NIL panel during CU’s annual Conference on World Affairs, during which sports attorney and former CU regent Jim Martin asserted: “Something has to be done because this thing is going to melt down, and to be able to hire a kid away from a university that has the transfer portal ability now – it used to be you had to sit out a year – those collectives are giving certain players money in order to entice them to come to the university. No one wants to admit the realities of this, but it is pay for play.” George noted there are “2,000 student-athletes in the portal today. They’re going into the portal, so where does the education fit into that? Where does graduation fit into that?” George added that student-athletes go on to succeed in all walks of life, and “I think we are losing sight of that and that’s a concern to me. … We’re going to continue to make sure that we set up our student-athletes, whether they’re here one year or four years, for the next 40 years, and that’s our responsibility.” (link)

Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale joins the Trustees and Presidents podcast with Karen Weaver to discuss the major issues in college sports, including a recent American Council on Education memo which supports Dartmouth’s position that its men’s basketball student-athletes should not be classified as employees. Cavale explains the industry is trying to solve complex problems for too wide a range of institutions and stakeholders and has become paralyzed in the process. “There’s just no way that you can please everyone, let alone solve all the different problems everyone has. The reality is there’s a $16B elephant in the room, and the $16B elephant in the room is mainly created by football athletes and some men’s and women’s basketball athletes. And the House case is a perfect way to see that if you study it because the $4.2B in damages that [U.S. District Judge] Claudia Wilken talked about were associated with what classes? Football, men's basketball, women's basketball. Power conferences. …And the the reality is if we could solve the problem for the few percent of athletes in schools and teams and these sports at this level who create almost all of the $16B a year…we could still protect everyone else to have the same – if not better – experience in college athletics across all divisions and all sports, preserve Title IX. We could do it all, but we've got to solve the problem for the $16B dollar elephant.” (link)

Notre Dame Executive Assoc. AD for Culture & Engagement JP Abercrumbie sits down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer after Notre Dame captured the 2024 NCAA/MOAA Diversity and Inclusion Award and talks about the game plan behind the success, where DEI efforts are overall and connecting the message internally and getting collaboration with fans. Abercrumbie on getting department-wide buy-in: “When you think about organizational culture, at least when we do at Notre Dame, we talk about everyone having a role in that. So, I think it’s really important to acknowledge everyone’s role. … I had buy-in from student-athletes, coaches, staff, campus partners, community partners…and just that continual engagement in thinking about different touchpoints with different folks along this journey is something that’s really intentional and those intentional investments go a long way in where we are today.” Full Q&A on Collegiate Sports Connect. + Northwestern announces it will play the majority of its football games the next two seasons at the Lanny and Sharon Martin athletics facility on campus. “With views of the lake, North Campus and downtown Chicago, the temporary structure Northwestern will build at the Martin athletics facility will provide a stunning backdrop for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, bridging the gap between the old Ryan Field and the new, state-of-the-art stadium, scheduled to open in 2026.” To make the enhancements to the Martin athletics facility, Northwestern has partnered with InProduction, the company behind the structures used for the NASCAR viewing area in downtown Chicago, as well as temporary seating, staging, structures and more for college athletics at Hawaii and Florida State. The school continues to have discussions with other Chicagoland venues for other home games in 2024. (link)

In light of World Athletics’ announcement that it would allocate money to pay $50K to each track & field gold medalist in this summer’s Olympics, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach points out that it’s “not yet clear if current college athletes are allowed to receive that prize money. In what feels like a relic of college sports’ antiquated past, the NCAA currently bars athletes from accepting prize money in events such as the U.S. Open in tennis or golf. … While the NCAA does allow money to be paid to Olympic athletes in college under its Operation Gold program, that rule clearly states that the money must come from the sport’s governing body for the athlete’s sport in his or her home country” and/or the USOPC. Auerbach notes this scenario is at the center of the lawsuit recently filed against the NCAA by North Carolina women’s tennis student-athlete Reese Brantmeier, and Tar Heels AHC Tyler Thompson remarks: “I can’t think of another situation where an organization can have a draconian quid pro quo where you are prohibited from accepting money you earned with your own sweat. I just think it’s really wrong, and especially in the age of NIL.” Auerbach concludes: “All that these draconian rules do is push elite athletes to leave campus earlier than they’d like. That’s not what the NCAA should ever be doing, intentionally or not. So, here’s a chance to right a wrong. Here’s a chance for a common-sense win amid several losses in court. Let college athletes keep their prize money — and their eligibility, too.” (link)

San Diego State is raising men’s basketball ticket prices by 20% for most seating areas next season. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler notes that based on last season’s prices, a “midcourt seat in the 15th row will cost $140.63 per game when the mandatory donation to the Aztec Club is counted.” Aztecs AD John David Wicker explained in an email to season ticket holders that “while exciting Aztec basketball lies ahead, 2024-25 will also present new challenges. Alongside annual inflation, we are facing increases in various departmental expenses. … These increases collectively result in an additional $650K in student-athlete scholarships alone.” Specifically, Wicker cited increases of 6% in tuition, 6.5% in housing, 5% in meals and 4.5% in “other student expenses.” Zeigler: “He did not include coach Brian Dutcher’s five-year contract that gave him a $900K raise to $2.3M for 2023-24 with $100K bumps in each successive season.” (link)
|
The Louisiana House Education Committee has advanced a bill sponsored by Representative Charles Owen (R-Rosepine) that would require public colleges and universities to accept cash at events, including sporting events. Owen: “We have these big events where families may have to save up a lot of money to go get a ticket to go to a ballgame or to a concert or to a speaking event or something like that… but when they get there they want to buy some water or a hamburger or a T-shirt with and they can’t use their cash.” LSU reported in a fiscal note that Owen’s bill could lead to a $75K annual loss of revenue for its third-party game day vendors and could slow down concession lines. The bill will now be considered by the full House. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports EA Sports has a tentative target date shared internally of July 19 for the release of College Football 25 with a reveal tentatively scheduled for May 16. Brown emphasizes that “these are not completely official dates. They are tentative dates, and those who have followed the development of this project closely know that dates and plans can change quickly with EA, just like they did with the national championship game and the rollout of various ‘In The Game’ social graphics.” As far as gameplay goes, Brown notes that “to be as realistic as possible, athletes would need to be able to transfer more than once. But if roster management in a video game really looked exactly like it did in real life college football…it would be too overwhelming to be fun for the majority of players. I’m told that EA is planning on allowing athletes to transfer more than once (realism), but is also working to figure out the right balance to make roster management approachable and fun.” Bowl games have also been licensed for the game, though not every bowl will take place in its actual stadium. Brown is still waiting on word regarding whether the Pop-Tart mascot will be in the game. (link)

The NCAA held its second annual Above the Rim Summit for 11 high-level women's basketball players who've exhausted their eligibility. The summit’s goal is to help attendees understand how to navigate potential professional paths in the WNBA and abroad, life beyond playing the game and various careers in athletics. During the four-day event, which was held in Cleveland alongside the WBB Final Four, the players interacted with several speakers with experience in the WNBA and Europe as players and in the front office, including former Texas Tech/WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes, who served as the event's keynote speaker. Participants also heard from NCAA representatives and experts in financial management, personal development, branding and sports media. Florida student-athlete Faith Dut: "I feel like the summit will help me moving forward just with networking and knowing people, plus being able to get my name out there and also learn from others and their experiences. Some of the key takeaways that I've learned from this summit are being confident in yourself and being self-aware. Also, never being scared or nervous to ask for help and what you want and what you want to do." More from the NCAA. (link)
