New Stetson AD Ricky Ray was introduced yesterday in DeLand: “It was the dream to be an AD, but it was the dream to be an AD at the right place. I've turned down chances to interview at other places. Especially if it's your first one, you want to make sure it's the right fit — president's right, the board of trustees is right. They're hard. They're hard to do. So you want to make sure it's the right place, and I got that feeling all the way through. [...] We're at a point now where we really have to take advantage of the momentum. We're going to be smart about it, but we've got to be aggressive. That's going to be key for us. We're going to have to get after it and get after it fast. That's exciting to me.” (link)

Two former Kentucky women’s swimming student-athletes have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky against the university, alleging former program head coach Lars Jorgensen committed sexual violence in the form of rape, inappropriate text & social media messages & videos, plus more. The lawsuit claims UK’s “complicity and deliberate indifference” enabled Jorgensen “to foster a toxic, sexually hostile environment within the swim program and to prey on, sexually harass, and commit horrific sexual assaults and violent rapes against young female coaches and collegiate athletes who were reliant on him.” Jorgensen’s response: “None of that is true, so I don’t really have much further comment. I’ve always tried to lead in a positive manner and do what’s best for each individual and the team overall.” Lots more. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown breaks down what questions need to be answered regarding the distribution of NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament units: “Should unit distribution go to all leagues that participate in the Tournament, with additional payouts for wins (like with the MBB event), or should they only be distributed for wins? I.e, should a 15 seed get a unit just for making the event? Should the units be funded only by the WBB valuation of the new NCAA postseason TV deal, or should they be supplemented with other NCAA funding sources? Should the units be paid out annually and reset every year, or should they pay out over a number of years, like with the MBB? How much should a unit be worth? According to the proposal mentioned in The Athletic story, a valuation of $190K/Unit is being circulated now.” Brown believes it’s likely most conferences prefer units to go to every participating league, not just those who win games. Ultimately, Brown notes that “whatever format the unit system takes after passing through various NCAA subcommittee hell, it probably won’t be earth-shattering money. But that isn’t the point. Creating a unit system is a powerful statement to demonstrate that women’s basketball matters to the NCAA, and even modest amounts of distributed money can go a long way towards building a stronger infrastructure to support women’s basketball.” Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade tells Brown she’s been proposing WBB postseason payouts since 1999, and that the distribution should include not only TV revenues, but “money received for NCAA Corporate Partners sponsorship, which included the WBB rights, could be used.” McGlade also supports payouts for the WBIT. House of Strauss publisher Ethan Strauss dives into the reasons behind the increased popularity in women’s college basketball and notes Iowa star Caitlin Clark is obviously a factor. What hasn’t been a significant needle-mover, Strauss contends, is the narrative that ESPN is finally taking the sport seriously. “It’s a hard theory to push back on in media spaces, where it’s fashionable for people to broadcast slogans like ‘invest in women’s sports!’ By arguing against ‘resources’ having a lot to do with Clarkapalooza you, a monster, are undermining the case for pouring resources into the WNBA and other women’s leagues. And yet…hey. I just don’t believe the resources-based theory on college women’s basketball meteoric rise. … No, what’s happened is this, roughly: NCAAW basketball maintained a good level of popularity, though lesser than the men’s side, and truly popped once a transcendent star (Caitlin Clark) came through. Right now, we’re looking at the after effects of that transcendent star’s impact, but more credit should be given for maintaining millions of fans as a baseline during an era when other professional sports saw fall off.” As for now this happened, Strauss observes: “The men’s college game has a very basic issue that the women’s game does not: The best men’s talent immediately leaps to the lucrative NBA once discovered. The NCAAW’s comparative advantage is that once you attain superstardom in college, it can build for years and years before you exit. … The four-year factor not only keeps stars in place for long enough to market them, but their continued presence also means the sport is generally less chaotic and thus more understandable at a glance. Teams are built over time and go on longer tournament runs than the upstart challengers. Fans can expect to see the more famous coaches deep into the Spring, every year. Continuity connects.” More from Strauss. (link)

Iowa Director of Social Media and Digital Strategy Brandee Britt calls on the WNBA to give schools more than one credential to the WNBA Draft. “Let’s work together to grow interest in the league.” Spotify Social Media Manager Bri Lewerke adds: “This is a big disservice, team content is SO important to carry collegiate fans to the W. I’m also unable to photograph Caitlin at the draft bc they don’t credential personal photographers for athletes. Bummed about access all around, and hope this changes in the future.” (link)

Want to work at Loyola Marymount? Lions AD Craig Pintens joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to highlight the department’s Assoc. AD for Marketing and Fan Engagement opening and how it fits into the overall athletic department structure. Pintens also talks about his expectations for leaders, the overall culture at LMU and how he determines fit. “For us, fit is somebody that wants to grow, and we want someone that is constantly striving To get better and in every aspect of their job in Jesuit education they refer to it as ‘magis,’ which quite simply in Latin means more and so then on top of that you obviously have to be comfortable living in Los Angeles, which is a fantastic place to live. We have an incredible location in Los Angeles. We're about a mile from the beach, we’re about 10 miles from downtown.” More from Pintens now on Connect. (link)

For Fox’s coverage of Ohio State’s spring football game this weekend, analyst Joel Klatt says the network will modify its coverage since a spring game doesn’t have the drama of a real game. “We’re going to get more access than we normally get in the fall. It’s going to be built more like a studio show. Our topics will be planned out -- less reaction to the action on the field -- and we’ll talk through topics.” As far as airing more spring games in the future, Klatt says: “Over the years, like the NFL, college football has become more of a year-round sport. ... This is a natural next step for us, to be more involved on more of a year-round basis.” OSU has sold 56K tickets and expects to sell around 78K. (link)

Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner explains why schools paying NIL money directly to student-athletes still poses a risk, echoing a point made by Sportico’s Michael McCann, who earlier this week observed that if “any so-called 'NIL' payments turn out to be pay-for-play and the NCAA is shown to have acquiesced, a court would be inclined to conclude the NCAA permits pay-for-play." Heitner: “Why would such payments that go directly from school to player be looked at any differently than the current slate of transactions between collectives and athletes? While collectives are wise enough to include endorsement-related deliverables and NIL-styled grants of rights, most consumers of college sports are also wise enough to see between the lines and respect that a premise to these deals is that athletes will attend and perform for a specific school. Why does Baker and the remainder of the NCAA believe that ‘NIL’ payments from schools to players, removing the collective as a ‘pass-through,’ will avoid scrutiny on the subject of whether the payments are truly salaries disguised as NIL? It's like thinking that just because a contract may be titled ‘Independent Contractor Agreement,’ it can't be deemed to be an ‘Employment Agreement.’ This appears to be a dangerous road for the NCAA to follow unless, of course, it is at the point where it is throwing its hands up in the air and, behind closed doors, resolved that even an employment model is preferable to the current state of affairs.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair and Vu Technologies President & Co-Founder Jon Davila join D1.extra’s Kristen Eargle to discuss Vu One as Toledo Athletics became the first athletic department in the country to unveil the cutting edge virtual production studio. Blair and Davila outline how the technology creates NIL and recruiting opportunities and the reaction of student-athletes. Blair "I don't think they knew what to expect at first because they had never imagined something this cool in our department. ... They felt like movie stars or rap stars and they couldn't stop smiling. ... being a midmajor department, they felt big time in that moment and they feel big time about what we're putting out from a digital media standpoint, so all around a great reaction. " Blair also discusses how he positioned it to his donors and how the technology is separating Toledo athletics from peer institutions. (link)

A James Madison spokesperson tells the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen the “CollegeAD report that outgoing President Jonathan Alger isn't involved in the AD search is incorrect. Presenting a candidate at the upcoming BOV meeting is dependent on the committee identifying a top choice and their acceptance.” Also of note from Mettlen: “Sources confirmed that interviews for the job are happening this month intending to present a candidate to the Board of Visitors when it meets on campus on April 18 and 19.” (link)

Incoming AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti responds to a question from Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna about whether the college sports industry or the media industry has changed more during his career: “Thats a tough one. It's almost a dead heat. Media has changed dramatically. When I was coming up in the business, we were fighting for rights against CBS, NBC and Fox, when I worked with ABC. And then there was ESPN, and then we combined with ESPN and we beat the networks because we could go to the table with cable and broadcast. And now it's a freer market. And what I love about it is the streaming partners that are getting into the industry afford colleges and universities the flexibility to be able to kick off at the time they want, maximize the fan experience, all of those things. With more options comes more flexibility and more exposure. I think that is changing dramatically. I'm just surprised that the streamers are are not jumping in as hard as we expected they would early on. But now they're starting to, which is really exciting for content providers like our conference.” (link); More in a full profile of Pernetti. (link)

Dartmouth Men’s Basketball student-athlete Connor Christensen writes an op-ed for the university’s student newspaper pushing back on unionization: “I believe that the movement opposes the core values and traditions of Dartmouth athletics — the balance between a rich academic history and competitive athletics — and may lead to unintended consequences for athletes across the College. Given the various levels of sport and the diversity of programs under the College’s umbrella, I believe unionization would be undesirable, an inadequate fit that fails to bring about positive benefits for most athletes at Dartmouth. [...] While basketball and football are revenue-driving sports for many teams in the NCAA, athletic programs at Dartmouth are not known for generating revenue. My team’s decision may, therefore, yield undesirable consequences if unionization becomes widespread. As many have noted, non-revenue-producing sports programs at the College may be forced to reckon with program and budget cuts. [...] Ultimately, unions exist to protect people from being taken advantage of. I, however, do not feel exploited by Dartmouth.” More. (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek explains that the campaign to fund renovations to Bud Walton Arena is not impacted by the financial commitment the Razorbacks are making to Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari. “Well, two separate funds quite honestly. We’re gonna go on a capital campaign eventually once we get a final design for the renovation to Bud Walton arena. And so that’s a totally separate capital campaign that we’ll undertake sometime later this year. So I don’t foresee it impacting the renovation of Bud Walton arena, but we have to make sure that right now, investing in bricks and mortar may not be the best decision as opposed to investing in our student athletes. And so I’ve really got to balance those two options.” (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari says he met with the team, but “there is no team.” Without a scholarship player on the roster, Calipari says it “may take a little longer because there are kids that put their name in the NBA draft that are going to go through some of the process, which means, do you wait for that kid? Or do you go take somebody that’s not quite as good and you’re going to be juggling balls?” Having “at least” $5M in NIL money will help, but one SEC collective operator tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “That budget doesn’t impress me. So far, we have not seen money buy championships. Cal’s model has always been to bring in the best talent and all for them to leave after a year for the NBA draft. He has so much turnover. He’s putting a new team on the floor every year without college experience. Unless he gets these guys on a long-term contract for two or three years – two years is probably more realistic – but if they can do that then maybe. Maybe have some cohesiveness. I just don’t think having that budget makes a difference. I don’t in this specific case.” (link)

Two Kentucky donors have combined to contribute $4M to support the men’s basketball team’s NIL efforts upon the arrival of HC Mark Pope. Wildcats AD Mitch Barnhart: “The brand is real. And it is really, really important and we’ve got to effectively use it and we use it. We combined some things in recruiting with the tenacity in recruiting, the staff in recruiting, the brand that we have and then the NIL space and we’ve got some people that have already stepped up over the last 24 hours. We’ve had several donors who have stepped up to put over $4M in our NIL portfolio for Coach to work with to get started. … I can confirm that’s true.” (link); UK’s NIL efforts could get another boost from an unlikely source in St. John’s HC Rick Pitino. The former Providence/Kentucky/Louisville HC, who coached Pope with the Wildcats, speaks in glowing terms about his former pupil and adds: “I can assure you, if they need the NIL money, I'll write the check." According to Iowa Men’s Basketball HC Fran McCaffery, departing PG Tony Perkins had an NIL market value of $500K that the Hawkeyes were not going to be able to meet. (link)

Ohio State Football HC Ryan Day two years ago remarked it would take an NIL budget of around $13M to keep the Buckeyes’ roster intact, and now, according to The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, it’s believed OSU’s budget is even higher. Day says: “We had a lot of people step up and really help us. Gene (Smith) is obviously instrumental in this, but I made a lot of calls, and a lot of people stepped up. It just goes to show you how great the support here is. … At Ohio State, you’ve got to beat the Team Up North and win every other game. If that’s the expectation every year, you like your chances a lot more when you have good players. So, might as well get the best.” Day goes on to note that “we’ve been talented here in the past, but when you lose guys to the NFL after three years, you can quickly get young again. I’ve identified that the last couple of years, wanting to be talented but also wanting to be experienced. I’ve noticed some of the teams we played have been a little bit more of 21-, 22-years old, and I think that matters.” (link)

Staying in Columbus, Ohio State OC Chip Kelly’s three-year deal will pay him $2M the first year with $100K raises in each of the next two. Overall, the Buckeyes’ AC pool has increased from $9.3M to $11.4M. (link); USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz notes OSU will once again have the highest AC payroll, followed by Georgia ($10.1M), Clemson ($9.675M) and Alabama ($9.425M). (link)

Additionally, Texas will cover whatever buyout money Bowman may owe his former employer, Arizona State, which had been paying him $310,000 per year as recently as 2022.” (link)

The Athletic’s Jayna Bardahl examines how multiple-time transfers determine their loyalty, and Oklahoma State QB Alan Bowman, whose dad played at Penn State and whose own career began at Texas Tech before spending two seasons at Michigan, says: “It was Penn State forever until I went to Texas Tech and we were big Texas Tech fans. I don’t know how I’m going to raise my son. I really don’t know. The loyalty issue is a thing.” Ovie Oghoufo transferred from Notre Dame to Texas to LSU across five seasons and says his loyalty is defined by the milestone each school represents in his journey: Notre Dame gave him his degree, Texas catapulted his career and LSU closed the chapter. “Each place is so different from the other. They’re all unique so they all get their unique type of loyalty from me. It will just be hard when they play each other.” Louisville QB Tyler Shough, who spent two seasons at Oregon after three at Texas Tech tells Bardahl: “In an ideal dream world, you play for one team and you’re ride or die, bleed whatever those colors are. I feel like I’m kind of blended in that way. You definitely share and take bits and pieces from whatever school you’re at with you.” (link)
