The idea of creating a super league in college football could work in 2031, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who reports that was “one conclusion reached after CBS Sports spoke with sources at the Final Four in Glendale, Arizona, the past several days soliciting opinions of stakeholders.” Dodd also observes that the idea floated by College Sports Tomorrow could be the prelude to a “showdown against a future trying to be created by the Big Ten and SEC.” West Virginia President Gordon Gee, a member of the CST group tells Dodd: "I do not believe that leaving it just to commissioners and athletic directors [is the way to go], because when you do, you do not get the view of [the university as a whole]. I think the university presidents have been the root of the problem here. We have ignored. We have not been engaged. We have not paid enough attention. And I am the poster child because…I paid a lot of these coaches millions of dollars. We just thought life was going to go on. We should have been thinking more progressively for a long period of time. My view is that to stimulate the conversation, get enough university presidents together to solve this problem." Dodd goes on to note there are “two look-ins in the new CFP contract that account for more realignment before 2031. Those look-ins probably didn't account for the emergence of a ‘super league’ but could ostensibly be used for it. There's already speculation that a ‘super league’ is a look at the next round of consolidation. Instead of realignment, conferences would ‘cut’ existing members not up to standard.” More from Dodd. Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart on what he can say about the recent lawsuit filed against former Swimming & Diving HC Lars Jorgensen: “I can’t. It’s under litigation. All I’d say: We always want to have safety for our student-athletes, our coaches and our staff, but other than that, I can’t say anything.” (link); Roughly 16K Kentucky fans packed Rupp Arena for the introduction of new Men’s Basketball HC Mark Pope, according to The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker, who notes that figure doesn’t include the throng of people on the floor. Kentucky Sports Radio Founder Matt Jones notes: “UK had no idea Rupp would be packed. They were expecting like 6-8,000 people. To have 22,000 and turn people away…amazing. Kentucky Basketball fans wanted that old feeling of their program back. They got it today and it was magical.” (link, link)

Playfly Sports Properties President Christy Hedgpeth talks with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown about Playfly Sports’ value proposition within intercollegiate athletics and how her team is disrupting the status quo among multimedia rights holders in the industry. Hedgpeth and Brown also discuss momentum for women’s sports, the potential for continued revenue generation in that market and lots more. Hedgpeth on why the sports gambling industry can be beneficial for college sports: “I understand the trepidation around this topic, but I really don’t see college sports as being different ultimately in how it should deal with sports betting versus pro sports. I was at the NBA starting in 2014, and that’s really when Adam Silver wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times about how it's much better to embrace sports betting on a legalized basis rather than having it happen in the shadows.” Regardless of one’s stance, sports gambling is happening, “so why not really embrace those partners…and really embrace what they can bring. And it’s all got to be with responsible gambling messaging certainly.” As women’s sports continues to grow, Hedgpeth cites her time in the WNBA and says it’s not just on owners to increase support. “It's really about company brands stepping up. You've got a company like Ally now who is committed to investing 50% in women's sports and 50% in men's sports. I’ve worked with companies like Google in the past who are really focused on women's sports so I think companies need to step up. Media companies like ESPN definitely have and so it's all about exposure. I truly believe the product itself is exceptional, it's just really about promoting it, getting exposure and then from there it really becomes a self-sustaining product.” (link)

SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane pulls back the curtain on ESPN’s Women’s Final Four studio show, noting the pregame version before last week’s national championship averaged 2.9M viewers on ABC while the postgame averaged 1.4M. ESPN VP of Production Kate Jackson: “I don’t think anybody could have anticipated that it was going to mushroom explode like it did like this. We’ve maxed out the thing, there’s no room for any more trucks in there. … This is a sport that’s just going to keep growing. What do we need to re-imagine? What do we need to think about mostly from a structural technical standpoint? How do we need to approach this in a different way so we can do more, serve more and just continue to be more for this championship?” ESPN had more than 350 credentialed staff on-site, and that number increases to over 400 when accounting for remote teams in Bristol and Charlotte. Jackson: “It’s bigger than almost anything else we do, outside of maybe the Super Bowl. College Football Playoff is maybe a little bit more, but you have to remember that those cameras have to cover an entire football field and not just an inside arena. In terms of the number of trucks that they have and things like that, this is probably pretty similar.” Jackson also talks about the intentionality associated with having five women of color present the show: “It’s really important that the people who talk about the sport reflect the people who play in the sport. It was absolutely something that we thought about, but it was not a deciding factor. [The best people] go in the best positions, and these were the best people.” More. (link)

Now this is cool: Miami (FL) Women’s Basketball HC Tricia Cullop left a parting gift for Ginny Boggess, her successor at Toledo. The note, tucked in the drawer of Cullop’s former desk, was short and simple: “I hope you enjoy this job as much as I did. Here’s my phone number, if you ever need anything. I’ll be there for you.” Cullop tells the Toledo Blade’s Dave Briggs: “I hope they know I meant that.” Boggess: “You walk into that office for the first time and it's empty and a shell of the space that once held a very prominent figure. To open the drawer, and see a letter from Coach…when you sit down and read a handwritten letter, you just pause. We don’t see that often these days, right? It was a moment of gratitude and gave me an even deeper realization of how important this transition is to everybody involved. It meant a lot to me.” Briggs calls the letter a “notable gush of fresh air” and further proof that Cullop means it when she says she wants what is best for Toledo. (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte in February announced UT has pledged $10M to the School of Social Work to “help fight systemic homelessness,” and the Austin American-Statesman’s Bridget Grumet reports the $10M “won’t come from the athletic department’s budget. It will need to be raised from donors, ‘including from Athletics donors who support the mission of social work’ over an unspecified period of time.” According to UT Asst. VP for University Communications Mike Rosen, the funding may not specifically address homelessness, telling Grumet: “Specific uses will be determined. While homelessness was mentioned during the (town hall) meeting you reference, it is just one of many critical social problems that the School of Social Work helps to solve, and the plan approved by the University provides the Dean the necessary latitude to strategically distribute support.” When announcing the School of Social Work’s relocation plans in a March 2023 email to students and faculty, Dean Allan Cole said the school’s old site would be “utilized as a part of Athletics’ ongoing facility needs” and added: “Through their existing resources and philanthropic gifts, UT Athletics will provide our school with considerable support for faculty, staff, students, and programs for decades to come.” Grumet: “But UT has never put a dollar amount to that promise nor outlined how the money would be used. … Still, in the unredacted passages [of emails obtained via open records requests], Cole says in January 2023 that he and Del Conte ‘have agreed on language’ for a memorandum of understanding.” (link)

DePaul will modify its plans for a new $60M basketball practice facility to assuage concerns from Lincoln Park community members about the planned demolition of several historic buildings in the area. Blue Demons AD DeWayne Peevy: “To help offset the necessary loss of buildings on Sheffield Avenue, DePaul will historically preserve and restore several iconic campus buildings to benefit the entire community. “In addition to voicing preservation concerns, the [Neighborhood Advisory Committee] requested design enhancements to ensure the practice facility’s proposed façade more closely matches the aesthetic of the neighborhood and included more emphasis on sustainability.” Enhancements include working with the Vincentian Order to landmark the jointly owned Byrne Hall building on Kenmore Ave; repairing O’Connell Hall’s exterior; installing solar panels on the roof of the proposed facility, decreasing emissions by 10%; and decreasing the facility footprint to allow for wider sidewalks and more landscaping. Several parents of USC football student-athletes have “expressed frustration with their son’s NIL pay at USC – in amount, organization of payment or feeling valuations were made in recruiting that didn’t align with their eventual earnings,” according to the Orange County Register’s Luca Evans. One parent explains: “It’s like a handshake. And when you handshake, and it’s Lincoln Riley on the other side and USC, you think to yourself, ‘Well, they got money, right? We’re not going to get (expletive). … USC’s good for it, you’re going to get it.’ And then you’re shocked when you don’t.” Meanwhile, now that Tennessee’s lawsuit against the NCAA has resulted in a hold on several NIL restrictions, “USC looks primed to shift into turbo,” Evans continues. Spencer Harris, executive director of the Trojans-focused House of Victory collective tells Evans: “If we can’t be in the conversations and educate properly, and even be the ones having the conversations, it’s going to result in issues and misinterpretation of value and expectations. So I do think, with some of these rules evolving, it’ll benefit some of these problems that have occurred.” Lots more. (link); Heitner Legal founder Darren Heitner also weighs in: “I have seen a USC NIL collective contract with a ‘maximum compensation amount,’ but zero was guaranteed. Instead, money would be paid out upon completion of deliverables only if those deliverables were requested by the collective in its sole discretion. Not optimal for a player.” (link)

Congratulations to Jacksonville State on its Women’s Bowling national championship, which is believed to be the first time a first-year inaugural program has secured a natty. Gamecocks HC Shannon O’Keefe: “I feel like we're like a broken record because we talk about it all the time, but to be patient, dig your heels in and just execute has really been our motto all year,. To watch our girls do what they did tonight was just awesome. To bowl a 250 to win the National Championship is pretty sweet." (link)

More from Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale on the Trustees and Presidents podcast with Karen Weaver to discuss the major issues in college sports. Cavale talks about the infusion of private equity and the potential for a super league and argues that pitting the most high-profile schools against one another would create even more revenue, which schools could use to fund the other sports as part of a revenue-sharing agreement with the commercial entity of which they would own a percentage. “And you could have fantasy football, which means more fan engagement because there's less teams, and you can't do fantasy football with 130+ FBS teams. So, they make more money and they'd be in this league and private equity would own part of the school's football IP and the school would own the other part. And you'd have a whole front office just dedicated to that separate, commercialized IP from the athletic department from the university – which is, by the way, something that you guys as presidents do a lot with medicine and technology on campuses. … This is just a different set of IP that the university right now has within its grasp and is commercializing more every day.” If/when that day comes, Cavale predicts there will be fewer ADs, Assoc. ADs and other staff members. “We’re heavy in spending from a payroll-standpoint with ADs, coaches and staff in college athletics. All you’ve got to do is look at what a pro league rations for coaches and staff – and it’s usually 10% or less of gross revenue – and what college does, which is almost 40-50% of gross revenue.” Lots more. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake floats the idea of the Pac-12 holding its football media day in Portland, the city where the conference was founded. Canzano notes Commissioner Teresa Gould was receptive to the idea and “told me the conference had a small group working on a plan. Washington State and Oregon State could just decide to hold their respective football media days on their respective campuses, sure, but that’s not what conferences do and the Pac-12 insists it’s still one. OSU and WSU will play a schedule that is heavy with MWC opponents next season in football. But nobody at those two schools appears willing to accept relegation. Crashing that conference’s two-day media-day event would bring bad optics. … The presidents and chancellors of the universities about to scatter to other conferences didn’t seem to care about 108 years of tradition when they waved in the wrecking ball last summer. Going back to a spot where handshakes mattered feels like an appropriate place for the Pac-12 to begin again.” Canzano also believes the conference should launch a national marketing and branding campaign. “It should hire Wieden+Kennedy and launch a ‘Pac-12 vs. the world’ advertising campaign. There are more people tuned into OSU/WSU than ever before. It’s a no-brainer. Seize that. Marry the campaign with the conference’s football television plan (The CW) in 2024 and let it roll. The schools can’t control the size of their media markets, but they very much are in control of their brands. It’s an area of historical weakness at both institutions. Invite the creatives into the room and let the action flow.” (link)

Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes talks with Business Insider about where Amazon's Prime Video stands “on the eve of a possible NBA rights negotiation that could serve as an inflection point.” Crakes: “With Amazon, the narrative of a free spending monolith steamrolling established media for every Tier 1 sports media property stands in conflict with the reality of an incremental partner investing prudently. In truth, there's been a strategic NFL investment but other acquisitions so far have been deliberate and selective.” (link)

Attorneys for ESPN joined attorneys for Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery in asking U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett to dismiss Fubo’s lawsuit seeking to halt the so-called Spulu super streamer. Earlier this week, Fubo asked Garnett to issue a preliminary injunction that would block the triumvirate from launching the streaming service. In their motion to dismiss, ESPN, et al. argue Fubo has sued them “to insulate itself from competition” and that a victory for Fubo would “eliminate a potential rival” in the form of the streaming platform. The defendants also contend Fubo wants the court to block their platform because consumers will simply find it a more appealing option than Fubo and similar providers. Fubo, meanwhile, argues the defendants are, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, “attempting to suppress virtual multi-channel video programming distributors, which sell live TV (and other licensed content) over a broadband connection ‘with more flexible packages and lower prices’ than more traditional providers. Fubo complains the streaming service ‘will feature just 15 channels, all featuring popular live sports—the kind of skinny sports bundle that Fubo has tried to offer for nearly a decade.’” McCann’s analysis: “This case is partly about the economic impact on consumers of something that hasn’t yet occurred: the release of the steaming platform. The two sides offer radically different predictions about impact on consumer prices and choices. Which set of predictions proves more persuasive on the court will play a major role in determining the outcome of the case.” (link)
