West Florida AD Dave Scott sits down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer from the 2024 NCAA Convention to dive into his Football program’s quick success and recent HC search, industry changes on the horizon and more. With the change at the DI level, Scott believes now is the time for “repositioning institutions to find the right fit for them. I’m not sure what was good the last 30 or 40 years that’s good for today. […] I think Division I, Division II, Division III are antiquated names and we really need to look at how we change that profile and make it look like what it needs to be for the future.” Scott credits the Football program’s early success to the great culture from the beginning, which was a key factor in hiring its second HC Kaleb Nobles. “We hired Kaleb in four days. … The fear was if we didn't replace our coach within the next few days, we'd have a bunch of guys in the portal by Christmas and then you're rebuilding your team and that takes time. So you have to win the locker room first, and then you go out and recruit, so by us bringing in Kaleb within four days I think was a huge success not only for our program but for our institution because it takes a lot of people to get through a state process and make a hire.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. The debate over student-athlete employment is leading some federal lawmakers to seek compromise, according to Bloomberg Law’s Diego Areas Munhoz and Parker Purifoy, who note: “Even in the Democratic-controlled Senate, lawmakers are trying to balance their support for unions with concerns over the fallout of designating college athletes as employees under various federal labor and employment laws.” For example, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) recently explained: “What I’m considering is the possibility that athletes could choose representatives to bargain for them without becoming employees. It could be a union representative. They could unionize but without being employees. … I’m hearing from coaches and athletic departments; they think it’s a terrible idea. A college president regarded it as an anathema.” Additionally, Blumenthal says student-athletes have told him that they oppose being considered employees. Meanwhile, congressional intervention is increasingly likely, according to Munhoz and Purifoy, who explain: “The easiest path forward for the hybrid model advocated by Blumenthal would be to classify the players as employees under the National Labor Relations Act but not the Fair Labor Standards Act.” West Virginia professor/former NLRB attorney Anne Marie Lofaso believes that approach still fails student-athletes. “If you don’t want them to get minimum wage, overtime, and workers compensation, then fine. But at least be open about it. This middle ground is still just hurting the players. It’s not a middle ground. It’s a concession to big business.” (link)

Barton selects Western Carolina (DI) Women’s Basketball AC & Recruiting Coordinator Eileen Van Horn as the Bulldogs’ new HC. Caldwell Acrobatics and Tumbling HC Amirah Boyd gets the profile treatment from Andscape’s Mia Berry as she is one of the youngest HCs in the country at 22 years old. After two years as an unofficial AC at Presbyterian (DI), she knew wanted to run her own program. AD Mark Corino on hiring the HC for the second-year program: “It’s a young sport. It’s a new sport so, you know, all the people that are involved in a sport are relatively young. So it took us a little while to research and to get a pool of candidates, but certainly when I look back at it, I don’t think I could have done any better in hiring for this position than I did in hiring Amirah. […] I knew that she had the determination, the desire, and most importantly the passion for the sport … and so it didn’t take me long to figure out that this young lady was going to be a successful person in a coaching profession. So, you know, I felt pretty comfortable in hiring her knowing that our program would be in good hands.” Boyd’s advice to those wishing to be like her: “I put my mind to it, and that was really it. If there’s something you really want to do, apply, go for it, do the thing. Let’s say you don’t get the job right away. OK, next year or when the next position opens, keep applying. There were a lot of jobs I didn’t get but I never let that deter me from what I actually wanted to do, because I knew some person was going to take me somewhere. And I knew the one that did was going to be the place that I needed to be.” (link)
