Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson wonders why the Big Ten and SEC would have any interest in the super league setup being considered by College Sports Tomorrow, and Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes responds: “This version was designed by folks on the outside trying to figure out how they get inside…Also, no one has given thought to how this gets paid for in current and medium term media distribution environment either. It’s a super league with a bunch of non-super teams, which is a problem.” Thompson notes the right model “from an economic standpoint is probably one that pisses off a bunch of people. That brings in the politicians and the whole thing rolls right off the cliff, and nothing happens.” Crakes agrees: “Exactly. Economics of an 80 team league are not enough to properly compensate the 20 schools that drive all the value...Anyway, not one thing will happen until we sort out where all the future economics will come from as current distribution configuration can't support this.” After CBS’ Dennis Dodd points out realignment “is/was about consolidation,” Crakes adds: “The pressure on the declining pay TV system which still (and probably will in the future) covers 80% of the economics for Tier 1 sports means distributors can only support realignments & leagues that over-earn on strategic value to the general market sports fans that still subscribe to PayTV. Properties that meet that definition are getting harder to find. There isn’t any room for a Super League that isn’t filled with Super Teams from top to bottom.” (link, link, link)

Bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (D-NC) and U.S. Congressman Mike Flood (R-NE) would modify F-1 student visas and allow international student-athletes to enter into NIL endorsement contracts. Flood: “International students already can pursue part-time employment during college. This legislation seeks to ensure that international collegiate athletes also have the opportunity to receive compensation in name, image and likeness promotions.” Immigration attorneys Amy Maldonado and Ksenia Maiorova, who work with international student-athletes on obtaining different visas in order to capitalize on their NIL is encouraged by the bipartisanship, but say: “Based on our own experience with DHS and USCIS, the bill is very open-ended, and the failure to define NIL in the bill creates the opportunity for DHS to promulgate regulations that may ultimately be inconsistent with the NCAA definition and industry practices. We would also prefer the language of the bills state that employment is authorized incident to status to prevent severe agency delays in processing Employment Authorization Documents from affecting international student athletes.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel examines how Virginia’s NIL bill, which Governor Glenn Youngkin is expected to sign into law on Thursday and allows universities to coordinate student-athletes’ NIL efforts, will benefit student-athletes, schools and donors. “Bringing NIL in-house will allow schools to streamline monitoring and funding. Meanwhile, benefactors will no longer have to choose whether to give money to a collective for NIL or an athletic department for scholarships and facilities. That distinction is vital to boosters, whose seat locations and parking privileges often hinge on how much they donate to the athletic department. Once the law takes effect, money donors earmark for NIL can enhance their ticket and parking status.” Today’s reconvened legislative session will include a decision on whether the law takes effect July 1 or November 15. Teel notes the “latter date comes into play if Wednesday’s session requests a review of the bill by the General Assembly’s Athletics Review Commission.” Delegate Terry Austin (R-Botetourt), the bill’s sponsor, says: “It will be law regardless.” (link)

The NCAA threatened to suspend former Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh last fall if his attorney, Tom Mars, did not stop publicly criticizing the organization. In a letter obtained by CBS’ Dennis Dodd, Committee on Infractions Chair Dave Roberts cited NCAA bylaw 19.4.6-(i), which gives the COI authority to "sanction parties and/or their representative(s) for behaviors that inhibit the committee's ability to effectively manage the docket, ensure a professional and civil decorum in all proceedings or otherwise efficiently solve infractions cases." Mars did not respond to the letter but continued to criticize the NCAA. Mars also says neither he nor Harbaugh were contacted regarding the negotiated settlement announced yesterday but tells Dodd the NCAA at one point demanded all of Harbaugh's texts and emails for the last two-and-a-half years. Mars requested the NCAA limit the scope of the request but was told no. "At which point I said, 'OK, you're not getting any of them.’ It's an invasion not even the Justice Department is allowed to do." (link)

Following the departure of Buffalo Wrestling HC John Stutzman last month, several members of the team allege they have been neglected by the athletic department. Wrestlers detail for The Spectrum student newspaper stories of misdiagnosed injuries, moldy and water-damaged wrestling mats and a lack of transparency and communication from the administration. Graduate student Caleb Brooks, for example, says a trainer misdiagnosed a broken knee as tendonitis. “I know the difference between a bruise and a real injury. … I was telling the trainers that there was something wrong with my knee. I was not given an x-ray even though I asked for one.” Another wrestler credits Stutzman with getting Brooks the proper treatment. “If Stutz didn’t fight for him, and he went one more day [of practice], at any moment his kneecap could’ve snapped.” The wrestlers, who are calling for more details regarding Stutzman’s removal, allege Deputy AD/SWA D’Ann Keller spoke negatively about the wrestling team to alumni and fans during a basketball game and that the news of Stutzman’s dismissal was leaked weeks before the official announcement. Keller and Bulls AD Mark Alnutt deny the allegations and say the department has worked with the wrestling team to address their concerns. Alnutt also says he doesn’t know where the disconnect between the administration and the team is coming from: “We have 16 sports right here and we’re hearing this from one sport after a coaching change. So we’re going to continue operating how we operate.” (link)

Collectives for Connecticut and South Carolina are looking to use the momentum from the Huskies’ and Gamecocks’ men’s and women’s hoops national titles to boost their respective war chests. Garnet Trust Director of Operations Jeremy Smith: “Winning a national championship, I don't care what sport it is, it's extremely helpful from a fundraising perspective. Because everybody's super excited, and they know what it feels like and want it to continue.” Meanwhile, Bleeding Blue for Good President John Malfettone says the Huskies-focused collective has sent emails to season ticket holders reiterating the importance of NIL. Following last year’s title run, Bleeding Blue for Good sold basketballs signed by the entire 2023 title team for $500 per ball. Malfettone is hoping to streamline the logistics this year. “We had to unpack and repack 300 balls four times, because of the guys that were going to the NBA that had already left the area. ... We’ve got a clinic planned for May 5, which is before they all leave [this year]. We’re going right from the clinic to the warehouse with all of them, and we’re going to sign the balls.” (link)

Colorado football student-athlete Shilo Sanders sent out a social media post encouraging defensive transfers to contact him and offensive transfers to contact his brother, Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders. CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah: “Typically, programs have a scouting department to identify talent and then reach out to prospective players for recruitment. Typically, the coach’s kids don’t crowdsource recruits.” (link)

Nearly 2.5M viewers tuned into Monday night’s WNBA Draft on ESPN, making it the “largest WNBA audience of any kind since 2000, when a Memorial Day Liberty-Comets game averaged 2.74 million on NBC,” according to Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis, who adds: “No other WNBA telecast, including the playoffs and finals, has managed even 1M viewers since 2008. The top telecast over that span was the deciding Game 5 of the 2017 WNBA Finals between the Sparks and Lynx at 913K. Viewership increased more-than-fourfold over last year’s draft, which averaged 572K on ESPN. The previous record for the draft was 601K in 2004, when Diana Taurasi was picked first overall.” For comparison’s sake, last year’s NBA Draft on ESPN and ABC drew 3.74M viewers. (link)

Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin during the SBJ World Congress of Sports said of growth opportunities: “When I think about how we're going to get from $6B to $15B (in merch sales), I think about not doing more of the same, but bringing in outside and doing new and different things to grow the category. And bringing in storytelling (invokes Travis Scott collab as an example)...We launched WWE belts last year, and now we've launched with (other leagues)." (link)

The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to file an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation as soon as next month, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Dave Michaels and Anne Steele, who note the “specific claims the department would allege couldn’t be learned.” They also point out that the new DOJ lawsuit could “unravel a settlement agreement that Live Nation reached with the department in 2010 over the Ticketmaster merger. The settlement conditions were supposed to expire after a decade. But in 2019, antitrust enforcers got the deal extended through 2025 after finding that Live Nation violated the original pact by bullying venues into using its Ticketmaster subsidiary.” (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit obtained College Sports Tomorrow’s pitch deck for its proposed Super League, which was produced by TurnkeyZRG, and note the “document contains a number of previously unreported details, including a specific plan for sharing broadcast revenue with players, a 40-game spring football ‘festival,’ and a preliminary look at how the Super League’s 70 permanent members might be arranged in seven geographically aligned leagues. Specifically, the seven permanent 10-team divisions include every Power 5 school plus Notre Dame, and are organized geographically: west, southwest, plains, midwest, northeast, south and southeast. The eighth division includes 10 schools from what the deck calls the “Under League,” which rotates every year. Novy-Williams and Libit note that “eight of the 10 are relegated each season and replaced by the eight teams that play in the Under League’s playoff. The rest of the Under League is organized in eight different divisions of seven teams, which are not detailed in the deck.” The pitch also proposes that broadcast NIL money set aside for players would be distributed as follows: 5% to all rostered freshmen, 15% to all rostered sophomores, 30% for all rostered juniors and 50% for all rostered seniors and graduate students. “The suggested ‘NIL Roster Cap’ would mandate that individual NIL payments for football players at a single school not exceed those earned via group licensing and broadcast NIL (BNIL) deals.” Exceeding the cap would result in the loss of transfer spots. However, if a school were to fall below 80% of a pre-established ‘NIL Roster Floor’ for two consecutive seasons, it would be relegated to the Under League until it could sustain a full season above the floor. Rosters would have an 85-player max, 70 of which could be on scholarship, and the 15-week season would include 14 games. Lots more. (link)

Akron President Gary Miller talks with Extra Points publisher Matt Brown about how athletics factors into enrollment and notes there is “really no way to directly tell exactly how your DI athletic program affects your enrollment, but there are a few indirect things that we look at. For one, when we look at the students that we accept to Akron who decide not to come here, and you look at where those students end up attending…the vast majority of them attend another FBS school. … This makes us believe that the student’s orientation at the beginning was for a school like us. Another thing to look at is when you look at the major private donors to universities, all three of the ones where I’ve been a president (UW-Green Bay, UNC Wilmington and Akron), about 70% of them also give to athletics. A large proportion of those came to the university in the first place with their generosity because of athletics. … The other thing to think about is that there are lots of communities like Akron that love Akron athletics. Athletics becomes a key part of the university’s engagement with the community.” While going on a deep March Madness run can help a university with enrollment, Miller notes it’s not a reliable strategy. “It’s kind of like a bonus.” Miller also believes there is a loss of connection happening in college sports now due to the transient nature of teams. “[College sports] is becoming more of a TV product than a local event, having to do with people that you’re connected with and are going to be connected with for a long time. “That, in my view, is a real danger to college sports. Ultimately, it becomes unconnected to the university.” (link)

Washington State will join the Mountain West as an affiliate member in baseball and women’s swimming for two years, beginning next season. The Cougars will be eligible for postseason conference championships and awards in both sports and the league’s automatic NCAA bid in baseball. WSU’s addition will increase the number of MW schools that sponsor baseball to eight, while the addition of women’s swimming will give the conference 10 women’s swimming programs. (link)

Athletic departments at the Pac-12’s 10 public universities finished last year with an $81M shortfall, with only five schools reporting an operating surplus, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes that figure includes $138.2M in campus support through direct transfers and student fees. Remove that campus support and the cumulative shortfall is $219.5M. Furthermore, Wilner notes when Stanford’s data is added – the Cardinal was $33.3M in the red without campus support – the total shortfall for 11 athletic departments climbs to $252.8M. Further still, that $252.8M shortfall does not include an internal loan of $31.6M to Arizona athletics from the university. Wilner asks Smith College (DIII) economics professor Andrew Zimbalist how much campus support is too much, and Zimbalist notes: “That’s a complicated question. Schools subsidize a lot of activities at universities. The question is whether the size is proportionate to the importance.” Sports Business Group Founder/USC adjunct professor David Carter tells Wilner that “schools need to soberly address the role sports is intended to play on campus,” but adds: “You could make the case that the transfers (from campus) are more of a marketing expense because athletic departments are major ambassadors for the universities. Administrations don’t look at $25M like it’s money specifically for branding, but they inherently believe that it’s important to have strong athletics.” More from Wilner. (link)

As of April 12, Louisville has sold more than 670 new men’s basketball season tickets. For comparison, UL sold 539 season tickets between March 18, 2022, and May 26, 2022, heading into former HC Kenny Payne’s first year. The Cardinals’ season-ticket numbers dropped from 12,159 to 10,743 between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, according to the Courier-Journal’s Brooks Holton, who notes that during Payne’s tenure, UL drew an average scanned ticket attendance of 6,504 in the 23K-seat Yum Center. Also notable from Norlander: “Young was taken by BYU's courtship not just because of the hefty contract offer, but because ‘the NBA grind is real and cutting his season down was a factor,’ according to one source. While college recruiting is a year-long grind in and of itself, BYU's range of prospects is much more limited than most other high-major programs due to its LDS Church ties and honor code. Michigan and five individuals who currently or previously worked for its football program have reached an agreement with NCAA enforcement staff on recruiting violations and coaching activities by non-coaching staff members as well as the appropriate penalties for those violations. One former coach did not participate in the agreement, and that portion of the case will be considered separately by the Committee on Infractions, after which the committee will release its full decision. The agreed-upon violations involve impermissible in-person recruiting contacts during a COVID-19 dead period, impermissible tryouts, and the program exceeding the number of allowed countable coaches when non-coaching staff members engaged in on- and off-field coaching activities. The negotiated resolution also involved the school's agreement that the underlying violations demonstrated a head coach responsibility violation and the former football head coach failed to meet his responsibility to cooperate with the investigation. Penalties include three years of probation for the school, a fine and recruiting restrictions in alignment with the Level I-Mitigated classification for the school. The participating individuals also agreed to one-year show-cause orders consistent with the Level II-Standard and Level II-Mitigated classifications of their respective violations. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: “Per NCAA policy, Michigan is not identifying the five current or former staff members, but a spokesman confirmed to ESPN that ‘no further game restrictions will be served by anyone who is still on the U-M staff.’” (link, link)

North Dakota has received a $6.5M gift from Sanford Health to support endowments in sports medicine and behavioral health and an ongoing construction project. Most of the gift – $4M – will go toward completing the $23M in additions to the Fritz Pollard Athletic Center, which broke ground last year. The remainder will fund scholarships and programs in the university’s medical school, nursing school and liberal arts college. UND President Andy Armacost: “This is a game-changing gift that will be felt by so many students across our entire campus. It’s what I like to call an attractor: something that will attract both students and student-athletes to our campus.” (link)

The city of Cedar Falls has committed $3M to support Northern Iowa’s renovation of the UNI-Dome. The funds will be distributed over the next three years. Panthers Interim AD Bob Bowlsby: "The UNI-Dome has been the site of hundreds of iconic events over its 50 year lifespan. The venue continues to be a beacon that has attracted visitors to Cedar Falls and the Cedar Valley.
