Lincoln (PA) AD Harry Stinson III and Montana State Billings AD Michael Bazemore sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss decision-making, prioritization of tasks, time management and more. Bazemore pinpoints organization and transparency as the keys when prioritizing where his attention needs to be, with a clean schedule that he shares with his coaches and staff. Stinson, who also serves as VP of Institutional Advancement on approaching urgent issues: “I ask everybody, if whenever you bring me an issue or an opportunity, give me your thought process on possible solutions. We would talk through those real quick, but that allows me enough time to continue to gather information and ask the right questions so that we can decide, ‘Let’s let that marinate for a little bit,’ or here’s what we need to do. […] Thinking through problems is a skillset. It is something that you have to practice and that speed of your decision-making , I know because I practice it so much that I can get to a decision really quick.” Stinson goes back to rethink past decisions as a method to practice decision-making for himself and others. Asked about the top priorities for leaders, Bazemore notes the ability to listen and resiliency. “It can be really lonely at the top when you have to make a lot of decisions, so you have to have a level of resiliency to understand that you make decisions off the information that you’re given and you can’t get too down with yourself with decisions. You have to try to stay pretty level headed because that can affect the performance and outcome.” Stinson’s priorities for leaders: patience, resiliency and the ability to flex. “When everybody talks about leadership, I say I am a servant leader, but it’s situational because every situation requires me to be a different type of leader.” Check out the full conversation on ADU. Christopher Deubert, senior counsel with Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete LLP, which is representing the NCAA in the Johnson case, outlines the following list of “practical considerations” should student-athletes become employees: compensation, taxes, collective bargaining, NIL rights, health insurance, workers’ compensation and employer rights. While certain star athletes may be able to negotiate compensation in the hundreds of thousands and into the millions, Deubert posits “the vast majority would be in line for the minimum wage or something just above it, amounts that might easily be satisfied by a scholarship and the benefits already provided.” Deubert also warns that student-athletes’ scholarships and other in-kind benefits “would seemingly be considered taxable income. Student athletes would thus be in the position of owing a considerable amount in taxes, even though they did not actually receive any cash income.” Also from Deubert: “Employers have the right to terminate employees so long as doing so doesn’t violate law or contract. Student athletes could theoretically be terminated from the team – and perhaps even the school – for poor athletic performance. Schools could also exert even greater control over student athletes, including practice schedules and related obligations, further straining their academic pursuits.” Full op-ed in SBJ. (link)

The NCAA has revealed the eight-team Men’s Volleyball Championship field. UCLA (DI) takes the top overall seed, followed by Long Beach State (DI), Grand Canyon (DI), UC Irvine (DI), Penn State (DI), Ohio State (DI), Belmont Abbey and Fort Valley State. All rounds will be hosted by Long Beach State. (link)

West Liberty has broken ground on its Belmont Savings Bank Softball Complex. President Tim Borchers: “I think this facility will really raise the level of softball here and really raise the experience for our students so that they have a locker room, that they have a practice facility that is top notch and worthy of them.I think also it will provide a good sense of community for our students, they’ll have a place to come in common, they’ll have a place to get ready for games, get ready for practice, a place where they’ll really be able to create those lasting bonds that our student-athletes have, and so it’s really going to be a way to be able to bolster our community as well.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann observes the Biden administration’s new Title IX regulations could make it “harder for students accused of misconduct to rebut allegations,” as schools will “no longer be required to hold live hearings that include opportunities for cross-examination. Schools can instead hold separate meetings with the accuser and the accused, with a school-appointed official asking questions. The school must then provide the parties with recordings or transcripts. Even when live hearings are held, a student must be able to participate remotely instead of in-person. One argument in favor of holding separate hearings is survivors may be more likely to report incidents if they don’t have to face their attacker again. When Title IX live hearings were mandated by the Trump administration, survivors’ rights advocates criticized the move as undermining Title IX’s goals. On the other hand, the ability to confront one’s accuser is a hallmark of the American legal system. The Sixth Amendment contains the Confrontation Clause, which guarantees the right to confront witnesses in criminal trials.” Title IX, however, is not a criminal law. As far as how the new regulations impact player compensation, McCann contends Title IX still applies. Schools “who pay football and/or men’s basketball players but not pay other athletes would undoubtedly face Title IX litigation. They might also face claims under the Equal Pay Act and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act.” More. (link)

A new study in Research in Higher Education by researchers at Georgia (DI) examined the impact of adding football on enrollment and tuition revenue. From the study: “In summary, a difference-in-difference analysis suggests that colleges adding football programs see an immediate increase in applications and enrollment, particularly male enrollment, when they launch football teams. This methodology allows us to compare foot-ball-starting colleges with others that never added the sport to better assess the effects of football on institutional metrics. The analysis suggests more muted effects on diversifying enrollment, and found no impact on tuition and fee revenue. […] Our findings do not necessarily imply that football-adopting colleges return to baseline enrollments or shrink from prior levels. Instead, it may well be that a football-adopting school begins drawing from larger pools of potential students than before, thus diversi-fying its key sources of students.” Lead author Welch Suggs tells Sportico: “This is the closest we can come to saying, what would have happened to a college if it never added football. It’s often said that sports is the front porch of the university. But what we’re seeing is that colleges that didn’t build that front porch are likely getting the same number of students and tuition dollars as those that recently did.” More.(link, link)

The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to file an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation as soon as next month, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Dave Michaels and Anne Steele, who note the “specific claims the department would allege couldn’t be learned.” They also point out that the new DOJ lawsuit could “unravel a settlement agreement that Live Nation reached with the department in 2010 over the Ticketmaster merger. The settlement conditions were supposed to expire after a decade. But in 2019, antitrust enforcers got the deal extended through 2025 after finding that Live Nation violated the original pact by bullying venues into using its Ticketmaster subsidiary.” (link)
