Nebraska AD Troy Dannen says he’s still “listening and learning” about the full scope of the $450M renovation to Memorial Stadium. “There’s a lot to balance as you look at this. Not just as a project in isolation but how does it relate to the entire department interacting with the future of what college athletics is going to be here?” Dannen acknowledges there are things that need be done inside the stadium: “Chairbacks, upgrading the club facilities, some ADA work. There’s restrooms and concessions, wireless, there’s a lot of things that I think everybody’s known, but it’s already very obvious to me that that needs to be done. A lot of those things monetize themselves. I think if you look at any project, its ability to pay for itself, whether it’s through donor gifts upfront or whether it’s through monetizing those improvements to pay for whatever debt you have to take on. You have to look at it in that context.” Dannen also says selling beer for baseball and softball games at the Haymarket complex is “big for us. I think just having a month of the season gives us a chance to make sure operationally we’re doing it in the right way. Then go back to the drawing board next season, do it the right way for the full season. It’s a great amenity, and it’s going to help the park because we will be a beneficiary.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff denies GoPowercat.com publisher Tim Fitzgerald’s assertion that KU’s Gateway project is on hold and that taxpayer money is being used to renovate Booth Memorial Stadium. Goff to Fitzgerald: “Every aspect of our detailed, transparent, strategic project is completely on track as planned/announced. Only change is increased momentum! I welcome you to come over to Lawrence for an interview if you’re interested in gathering accurate information and covering KU.” Fitzgerald subsequently remarks in a video: “They’re trying to say the stadium is part of the Gateway project, which doesn't make sense. The stadium's there, and they're just fixing up what needed to be fixed up, and we all agree on that. … if you look at their plan, which I have, Phase 1 has always been the stadium and elements of the conference center. … Okay, so when's Phase 2? Normally when you do a major project you have dates on the phases. Travis Goff has now admitted they don't have a date and they don't have the money and that statement tells me, yes the $50M went directly to the football stadium. And keep in mind also to secure the $50M they had to backstop that grant with $150M because it was a challenge grant. They were challenged to raise three times the amount of the grant, but they used money from the KU Foundation to backstop that, so money that people had given to academic concerns was used to prop up this grant given for Gateway project. Was that money actually used or did they fundraise over the top of that and return that $150M to the KU Foundation?” (link, link)

Idaho AD Terry Gawlik joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss building a culture via the hiring of head coaches and senior level staff members. Gawlik also reflects on the impact her coaching experience had on her leadership style, how the transfer complicates creating culture in the locker room, working with a search firm on a head coaching search and more. To illustrate the importance of developing staff members, Gawlik explains that when Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Matt Martin left for the USC Upstate AD post, she chose not to backfill his role. “I am seeing what’s happening in the weeds, so to speak, and I had elevated our former head athletic trainer to our senior leadership team. And he's overseeing athletic training, but I saw some things in him that I thought were great leadership skills. So now he came to me and said I want to take over that department. He knows nothing about it. It’s been great. He runs our meetings, he supports the staff.” Gawlik goes on to note that when she first took over in Moscow, “I had to let go of some of the day-to-day. I like doing the things, so I had to say, ‘No, it's yours, you go run with it, if you need help come see me.’ And a lot of times people, they don't do it the way I do it – great. And if it doesn't work, then hope you learn from that, but I think you need to develop your staff and let them grow. So, we’re hoping to let all our marketing young people, maybe we’re going to give them more assignments of this whole changeover, so that way they get to grow. It’s all about empowering people to get better in whatever areas they want to do it or even sometimes in some areas they don't even know they want to do.” Full conversation on ADU. (link)

The Athletic’s Austin Meek, Seth Emerson and Mitch Sherman wonder whether the 85-person scholarship limit in college football still matters and point to Michigan student-athlete Cam Goode’s situation as an example of why it may matter less, at least. Asked to give up his scholarship to make room for another player, Goode chose to remain in Ann Arbor and pay for his scholarship with NIL money rather than transfer. He explains: “I was totally open to it. I’m not a selfish person at all – if anything, selfless. It was all for the better. I knew they were going to take care of me. I’m a good player, they love me, I’ve got a great personality. I knew they’d take care of me, for sure.” Meek, et al. note Goode is far from the only player in this situation. “At many programs, players are receiving NIL as a way of going above the NCAA scholarship limit of 85 per team. It’s a way to have a deeper roster and keep veteran players around.” Still other programs “prefer to focus on the top 50 or so players, rather than send NIL money to the 86th, 87th and 88th players on their rosters.” AFCA Executive Director/former Wyoming HC Craig Bohl says the topic came up at this year’s convention and opinions among coaches are varied. Some coaches like a tighter roster while others would “go up to 150 if they could.” Nebraska HC Matt Rhule favors a slightly larger roster but believes getting there by replacing scholarships with NIL money “feels like a workaround. … The way things are done, I’m recruiting someone here who’s dealing with a third party. And then I’m beholden to a third party. It’s definitely backwards. There’s no transparency to it.” More. (link)

Howard AD Kery Davis joins Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer as the pair cover the overall landscape, the current state of HBCU football, what lessons Davis brings with him from his management experience at HBO and more. Davis explains that HBCU football’s uniqueness is one of its biggest selling points: “Before I got to Howard I had never been to an HBCU football game. And being a former HBO executive, I had been to almost everything. We went to the Super Bowl every year because we did Hard Knocks and Inside the NFL, etc. We did all-star games, we were involved in some big sporting events. But the first time I went to a Howard-Hampton game, I was like, ‘Oh, this is different.’ And it’s unique. And one of the things my background tells me is anytime you’re experiencing or selling something that’s unique, that makes it even more viable. I love the cultural impact of HBCU football, the pageantry of it, the bands, the cheerleaders, the fans of it. It’s a great afternoon and there's nothing like an HBCU homecoming. … We’re hopeful that the networks will see the value of what we bring to the table because it is unique.” Full Q&A on Connect. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports One Team Partners last week indicated that 12,300 football student-athletes have opted into EA Sports College Football 25. That figure includes scholarship and non-scholarship players who have opted in, but Brown points out that opting in does not guarantee NIL compensation. Only those who are included in the game will receive NIL compensation. Brown: “I’ve texted a few P4 and high level mid-major school officials about what their participation numbers are looking like, and every single official I’ve spoken to has told me their school has more than 100 players who have opted into the program (which would include walk-ons). … There is a confidence in the industry that north of 95% of scholarship athletes will sign the paperwork before April 30.” (link)

Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden says the "sum reportedly paid by Nike to lure the German football team away" from Adidas was "inexplicable” and the company opted not to enter into a bidding war. Adidas, Gulden continues, says the company “would continue to go after major kit deals, including the franchise for France, but only if the price is right” and that international football “was not everything,” citing high-profile deals with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. “We try always to invest where one gets the best advertising impact and can make the highest sales, and we'll continue to do that.” For its part, the German Football Association says that the decision to link up with Nike was “made in the interests of the domestic game and grassroots football.” (link)

DraftKings is facing a second class-action lawsuit with a new complaint filed in the Southern District of New York that alleges the company engaged in deceptive, misleading, fraudulent and unlawful activity by advertising a risk-free wager. The suit, filed by plaintiff Samantha Guery, argues that the way DraftKings awards its free bet resulted in compensation that failed to match the amount of money a person must wager in order to receive the offer. From the suit: “The promotion required that the customer place a bet with their own money. If a customer lost their bet, they were not returned to their original position. Instead, their accounts were credited with a ‘Free Bet’ that was worth less than its counterpart in U.S. dollars implied by the promotional materials. … Free Bets cannot be withdrawn and must be wagered to be converted to U.S. dollars. Furthermore, wagers made with Free Bets are not paid out like wagers made with U.S. dollars. A $100 winning bet made with U.S. dollars at even odds recovers the $100 stake plus the $100 winnings less the sportsbook’s cut (known as the ‘vig’ or ‘rake’) of 9%, which results in a payment of approximately $191. By contrast, a winning bet made with a $100 Free Bet converts only to $100 US dollars less vig, which results in a payment of approximately $91.” DraftKings declined to comment to SBC Americas on the story. With Tulsa AD Rick Dickson set to retire at the end of June, the Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten doubles down on the university needing to consider Oral Roberts AD Tim Johnson: “Having rallied ORU donors for an extensive renovation of the Golden Eagles’ baseball stadium, Johnson is blessed with the people-skill talent required in the fund-raising business. At Clemson, he raised a lot of money for Tiger football, and he was a difference-maker in that school’s campaign to raise $1 billion for various projects. ORU would be sickened to lose Johnson to its crosstown rival, but Johnson should be Candidate No. 1 for the University of Tulsa’s athletic director position.” Haisten also mentions Oklahoma state senator Dave Rader as a possible candidate. Outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith on the possibility of football separating from the school: “I’d hate it. I think whatever model exists has to be tethered to education. All the blessings I’ve had thinking back, not just football players, athletes over the years, we’ve changed so many people’s lives. … We have them come to us and they’re very mature and focused and get things done and we’re facilitating their time here and helping them develop. … Some come to us at a very immature level and we do a great job of getting them maturity and a great job of helping the light bulb come on for them. I just think in higher education we have to keep it tethered to education. If not, if it’s not a part of that, then make it semi-pro and take it outside the institution and you pay the institution a contract to use the stadium. But that model would bother me, because I would know that those student-athletes who, regardless of the fact they might be getting some level of money, they’re not being taught how to live the next part of their lives. That’s probably old-school in me, but I’m just passionate about giving these young people the opportunity to be educated.” (link)

Vermont AD Jeff Schulman, Hockey East Commissioner Steve Metcalf, Minnesota-Duluth Men’s Hockey HC Scott Sandelin and North Dakota Deputy AD Erik Martinson participated in a State of the Game press conference during last week’s Frozen Four. Asked about the relative lack of diversity within college hockey, Metcalf noted: “I guess it was three years ago now, a group of folks across the college hockey space came together in a group or committee College Hockey for DEI. … A lot of it is, it's a long game that this is to play. So it's hard to say you can see a direct, tangible result that's happened year over year. The intent is to try to grow some awareness and bring the game to maybe places it hasn't been, trying to work with the NHL folks in communities where the NHL and college hockey both exist. There is some work being done there. We all know that hockey has never been as diverse as perhaps we would all like it to be. There's certainly conversations going on to try to make improvements there.” Sandelin says the possibility of allowing CHL players to participate in college hockey will be a topic when coaches meet in a couple weeks but probably won’t be solved at that time. “I don't want to sit up here and say I'm for it or against it. I want to have a good discussion about it, but certainly probably two years ago I was fine with saying, ‘Hey, I like where our game is at.’ I still do, but I think we have to have some discussion and look at that, for sure.” On the possibility of the growing number of independent programs finding homes in a conference, Metcalf explains: “Some of these programs -- let's see the best way to put this. They started their program and they knew they didn't have a home right away. That was the chance they took. Now I guess there's a few more that have grown. I hear scuttlebutt all the time about maybe some of them banding together or jumping onto another league, perhaps a little movement within the conferences, which might make sense as well.” Lots more. Christopher Deubert, senior counsel with Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete LLP, which is representing the NCAA in the Johnson case, outlines the following list of “practical considerations” should student-athletes become employees: compensation, taxes, collective bargaining, NIL rights, health insurance, workers’ compensation and employer rights. While certain star athletes may be able to negotiate compensation in the hundreds of thousands and into the millions, Deubert posits “the vast majority would be in line for the minimum wage or something just above it, amounts that might easily be satisfied by a scholarship and the benefits already provided.” Deubert also warns that student-athletes’ scholarships and other in-kind benefits “would seemingly be considered taxable income. Student athletes would thus be in the position of owing a considerable amount in taxes, even though they did not actually receive any cash income.” Also from Deubert: “Employers have the right to terminate employees so long as doing so doesn’t violate law or contract. Student athletes could theoretically be terminated from the team – and perhaps even the school – for poor athletic performance. Schools could also exert even greater control over student athletes, including practice schedules and related obligations, further straining their academic pursuits.” Full op-ed in SBJ. (link)

The Competition Oversight Committee addressed several topics at last week’s meeting, including championship licensing and NIL for student-athletes. Member institutions can participate at their discretion. The system is predicated on the use being lawful; the use complying with the NCAA’s NIL policy (e.g., no inducements); the NCAA does not provide consideration or value to the student‐athletes; and the member institution affiliated with the student‐athlete has no objections. These four precautions were central to the NCAA’s decision to allow its corporate champions and partners to use student-athlete NIL in their promotional campaigns surrounding NCAA championships. The committee supported a proposal by the Committee on Women’s Athletics to introduce legislation to add women’s wrestling as a National Collegiate championship and establish a women’s wrestling committee. In fall of 2023, 41 NCAA member institutions met minimum sports-sponsorship requirements, putting the sport above the legislatively required threshold of 40 varsity programs to be considered for National Collegiate championship status. If adopted, and pending budget approval, the women’s wrestling committee would begin its work in January 2025 to prepare for the first National Collegiate championship in winter 2026. The COC also considered but did not support the women’s lacrosse committee’s request to allow video review to be used during its national championship tournament, including at preliminary-round host sites that have the capability of doing so. The Athletic’s Max Olson breaks down college football programs into five categories vis-a-vis their approach to the transfer portal: the NIL barons, the portal enthusiasts, the desperate portalers, the need-based portalers, and the portal deniers. While it’s not a hard and fast rule, NIL barons tend to get what they want, but Olson notes it’s not necessarily about having the most money overall. “Georgia and Alabama continue to be in a class of their own. They usually don’t take many transfers, but the few they add will be legit.” Ole Miss’ expertise in portal recruiting has helped the Rebels catch up to those two SEC powers, but HC Lane Kiffin acknowledged that’s always a moving target. “It closes the gap, but then at times it doesn’t.” Olson describes the “desperate portalers” as programs in their first or second year under a new HC who don’t really have a choice because “rosters get raided during coaching transitions.” The portal deniers category, meanwhile, is led by Clemson, who is “the only Power 5 program that has signed zero transfers this offseason. Iowa has typically been very selective with transfers in recent years and only took one this offseason (who later returned to Alabama). … The list of programs on the low end of transfer commitments so far includes Michigan (two), Stanford (two), Northwestern (three) and Virginia Tech (four). … We’ll see whether the spring window changes the calculus for a few of these teams.” (link)

Dallas Stars Business Strategy and Analytics Senior Analyst Jed Buchholz talks with SBJ’s Rob Schaefer about how a neural network machine learning model he helped build to serve as a ticket pricing analyst for the team achieved fast results. Across the 2023-24 season, the Stars have generated more than $300K in incremental revenue from single-game ticket price adjustments made using Buchholz’s AI model. Buchholz explains he trained the first version of his model against a “smooth moving average” of Ticketmaster’s ticket price adjustment tool’s recommendations and the average ticket price on the Stars’ resale market. Buchholz and Stars VP for Ticket Sales and Service Daniel Venegas emphasize that the model’s automated price adjustments are meant to augment the team’s existing sales staff, not replace it. Venegas: “[Buchholz] is using that to be able to put in recommendations to me, and I’m going through those and implementing the ones that I think make a lot of sense. We still have a little manual oversight over it. It’s not straight AI to the pricing model and then straight to the web.” Still, the Stars’ success using AI has led the team to investigate more use cases, such as predictive modeling for attendance, membership renewal and new business projections. Venegas: “Most of this stuff isn’t crazy as far as huge investments that we need to make. We’ve used a couple vendors, we do some stuff internally, and that allows us to spread the costs of what it would be to try to take everything on.” (link)
