After a slight delay, the DIII MBB (link) and WBB (link) tournament fields have been released. 

D3sports’ Coleman and Thomas host a roundtable discussion with outgoing John Carroll AD Morgan, ODAC Commissioner Bankston, Lake Forest FB HC Cantanzaro, Trinity (TX) FB HC Urban and Salisbury FB HC Wood to discuss how to fix the FB playoffs with just four at-large bids up for grabs. A survey of HCs found almost half were in favor of a scenario that would extend the season by a week to expand the playoffs, with just 9% supporting the model as currently constructed. Bankston comments discussions within the DIII Commissioners Association are ongoing to examine how equitable all championships are, with a look at the size of the postseason and AQs, “and glaringly in front of us was football.” The trio of coaches support adding a week to the end of the season and keeping the in-season bye week in place, pointing to the student-athlete experience, health and safety, mental health and more. Pointing to the student experience, Wood pushes for an expansion with the top four teams getting byes to create more competitive games, with Cantanzaro commenting: “One of the things that is the most concerning is if you have a team that is geographically in a position where they end up playing top seeds year in, year out, yes, they might be first round exits, but they're going to be playing a top team every year. And so it's a little bit of a different perspective than when you have maybe none of the top four seeds in the tournament in a geographic region, continue to advance into the second or third round.” The first step to expansion would be removing the legislative cap on 32 teams, with a key next step being modeling and the financial impact, especially since the NCAA would have to foot the bill on a postseason expansion and the increased dollars coming from the NCAA media rights deal. The Daily Times gives the profile treatment to Maryville AD/DIII MBB Committee chair Quatrocky, the first woman to hold the latter post. Quatrocky: “It’s not like that’s why I did this. There was an opening, I like basketball, and this is a committee I’ve never been on before and I did it. It’s kind of fitting because it’s also the 50th anniversary of Title IX, but who would’ve thought it would take that long.” NCAA Coordinator of Championships and Alliances Mortillaro, on what has made Quatrocky a success: “She has shown she knows what the ultimate goal is and does a great job of uniting the group to work toward that goal, but she also keeps the bigger picture in mind at the same time. She does a good job of balancing both — which can be challenge for some — the global landscape of Division III basketball and the small targets week-to-week of each region.” And on what her work over the past half decade means to her, Quatrocky: “To think that I’ve helped grow Division III basketball to the point where we had a media room last year full of media and national media stories. We were on ESPN and we have our national championship game televised on CBS Sports. Those things are priceless. [And] the fact that my grandma will be able to watch me give the trophy on television this year, that’s a big deal to me.” (link)

TCNJ unveils a quartet of secondary logos – a front-facing lion, a script “Lions” wordmark, a logo outlined by the state of New Jersey, and lion eyes –  developed in partnership with The Barn Creative. AD DeMartino: “As we've expanded our campus branding efforts we realized a need for more variety with our logo marks. Collegiate Sports Connect has an interesting data set on desired compensation for Development officers around the industry broken out by years of experience & competitive division. The USGA has launched the U.S. National Development Program, which will “identify, train, develop, fund and support the nation’s most promising junior players – regardless of cultural, geographical or financial background – to ensure that American golf is the global leader in the game.” USGA CEO Whan: “Today, nearly every other competitive golf country in the world offers a national development program to foster and develop its elite junior talent. The United States is at a huge competitive disadvantage in this regard, as we simply ask our athletes, parents and coaches to forge their own path, without any unified national guidance or financial support. … Today, that ends. Today, we start building a junior development program that will ensure a stronger American pipeline of diverse, high-potential talent.” (link)

With an uncertain economy and the $80B in federal aid colleges received to get them through COVID all but gone, higher ed institutions across the country are facing some harsh economic realities, The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Gardner observes. Enrollment is the industry’s most daunting hurdle, as the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center reports that undergraduate enrollment declined by 4% from 2020 to 2022, and the ongoing – and unavoidable – predicament institutions now face is an even smaller pool from which to draw students. According to Carleton professor Grawe, more than half the states are projected to lose as many as 15% of their college-bound high-school graduates by 2029. Furthermore, increasing tuition is an increasingly difficult sell due to the “public narrative about student debt and the high price of college makes,” Gardner notes. Ultimately, rpk Group Founder Staisloff finds that with smaller enrollments, flat or declining state funding and increasing costs, the sky may not be falling but “the cloud ceiling keeps dropping and dropping and dropping and dropping, and that’s getting harder to ignore.” (link)
