ESPN’s Pat McAfee asks NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell if he would help fix college football, and Goodell responds: “Who's in control? Is it the NCAA or conferences? And they're moving around. For us, I don't know enough about it, but if anybody asks us for help, we're going to do our best. … Guys are staying in college football because they're getting paid. I don't think that's a bad thing. I love college football. I watch it all day. They make stars of our players. They give them a platform and get them ready physically and mentally. I think it works." That said, Goodell notes he has a meeting with college football leaders in the next week. “We want to try to help.” Could the NFL absorb college football and bundle the entities together? “I don't see that. At least today. I don't see that in the future." (link)

St. John’s men’s basketball student-athletes Chris Ledlum and Jordan Dingle have filed suit against the NCAA alleging violations of New York antitrust and NIL laws relating to the NCAA denying their request to play a fifth year. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes that “Ledlum (Harvard) and Dingle (Penn) both played in the Ivy League, which canceled the 2020-21 season. So they didn’t get that free year of eligibility like players in other leagues who got to play five seasons. They’re seeking an injunction that allows them to play that fifth year.” (link)

Princeton AD John Mack doesn’t want “student-athletes on our rosters who are only here because we’re paying them,” adding: “The vast majority of student-athletes on any campus on any roster are there because it provides an experience to be a student and an athlete at the institution that they chose, not because someone threw tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars at them. … I don’t think we institutionally see [collectives] as a path of success for us. Largely what collectives across the country have become is just paying kids to be on your roster. It’s been a means to attract kids to your institution, just because you are the highest bidder. That is never going to be who we are, is never going to be our philosophy.” That said, Mack acknowledges the Tigers want to “make sure that we have meaningful opportunities for our student athletes to engage in NIL activities” and cites the department’s partnership with Opendorse. “I think nationally, a lot of student-athletes don’t realize that [building your brand] is part of the NIL enterprises. You have to do some work on the front end to be a more attractive candidate for a lot of these companies.” Overall, Mack concludes, the “lifetime value of a Princeton education will almost always exceed NIL opportunities at other institutions. There will always be a really deep pool of elite student athletes academically and athletically, who value our institutional model and philosophy of the Ivy League student-athlete experience.” (link)

UT Martin AD/Softball Committee Chair Kurt McGuffin joins D1Softball’s In the Circle podcast to discuss several topics, including what the committee is looking for in choosing this year’s NCAA Tournament field. McGuffin emphasizes the importance of keeping the focus on the criteria, “and then when it gets down to those paper-thin margins that I think we’re going to have this year…what’s our point that the 10 people in that room want to make as the tiebreaker, so you could say. Whether it’s top 10 wins, you look at everything, and you look at that total body of work. We’re going to stay on track.” McGuffin adds it’s especially important to come into the room prepared because of the condensed window of time to get the teams right. “I think the key to our softball selections is really using what we call the RAC, the regional advisory committees. There’s five regional advisory committees that are made up of coaches. … Our 10 committee members are assigned to those regional advisory committees and we really focus in on what those coaches are telling us about those regions. … We watch as many games as we can, but I think the key is talking to those coaches.” On the travel logistics, McGuffin says there’s not necessarily a number of flights the committees tries to stay under but members do look back at previous years and “try to keep it as comparable as possible, but I’ve never heard a number from the NCAA staff.” More from McGuffin. Attorneys representing more than two dozen Iowa and Iowa State student-athletes have filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court accusing Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation of violating the athletes’ civil rights and conducting an unreasonable seizure through the Fourth and 14th Amendments. According to the complaint, DCI special agent Brian Sanger allegedly drew boundaries around athletic facilities using technology provided by GeoComply on both campuses in early 2023. Doing so enabled Sanger to identify gambling account numbers but not specific account holders. DCI subsequently subpoenaed various sports betting companies’ records that revealed account holders engaging in sports wagering at the facilities. The plaintiffs are seeking an unspecified amount for deprivation of their constitutional rights, loss of personal reputation, compensatory damages, punitive damages, legal expenses and more. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman reports the Sandy Law Firm is likely to file a similar lawsuit representing seven other athletes. (link)

The Bexar County Commissioner’s Court has approved a $5M investment in UTSA’s planned Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility. The $35M, 52K-sq-ft facility will house the daily operations of the UTSA men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs, and “as part of the construction process, a funding agreement will include a provision that outlines public access similar to the agreements with the Roadrunner Athletics Center for Excellence and the Park West Fieldhouse.” (link)

The NFL is giving players the option to wear Guardian Caps on their helmets during games this season, according to Chief Administrative Officer Dawn Aponte, who, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, “nonchalantly mentioned a new ‘option’”during a recent webinar. Chief Medical Officer Alan Sills responded: “So we might actually see a Guardian Cap on a player in a game this year. That’s possible. Great. Big change coming up.” Florio: “The league possibly is betting on the vast majority of players choosing not to opt for a path that will make them stand out. Regardless, the league has (wisely) realized that it’s impossible to reconcile a desire to maximize player health and safety with a refusal to let players choose to wear an extra piece of safety equipment — especially since it apparently works.” (link)

SBJ’s Bill King explores how Jontay Porter’s betting scandal has brought player props to light and notes that “we can take solace knowing Porter and whomever was in cahoots with him were caught. As each league has found its way from ‘no way’ to ‘maybe this way’ and then ‘giddy up,’ it has rightly agreed that regulating sports betting would make it far easier to monitor and police.” In framing the conversation moving forward, King observes: “Regulated online betting, with bets made from easily trackable devices, monitored for anomalies that raise suspicion, will lead to more detection than the occasional wiretap that catches a bookie while trying for bigger fish. This, we know. What we don’t know is how many of these inevitable transgressions the broader set of sports fans will be willing to tolerate so bettors who want to parlay the stats of a Raptors reserve or take the under on assists on an 18-year-old point guard at a mid-major are able to do so.” (link)

The NBA and Amazon Prime have agreed to the “framework of a deal that will make the streaming service one of the main homes for the league’s games,” according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who reports the package is expected to include “significant regular season and postseason games, perhaps even some conference finals. The anticipation is that the final contract will be for at least a decade and begin the 2025-2026 season.” With two media partners now seemingly in place, Marchand notes that incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery will face off with NBC “for the likely last package of games. Warner Bros. Discovery has the right to match deals, but NBC could try to structure an agreement in a way that makes it difficult.” (link)

Skydance still has the inside track on acquiring Paramount, according to Deadline’s Jill Goldsmith and Anthony D’Alessandro, who add: “The exclusive month-long negotiating period through May 3 is likely to be extended perhaps by a few weeks, Deadline hears, given the complexity of the transaction. The rough contours of a Skydance deal would see a circa $2B payout to Redstone for a majority stake in family holding NAI (which controls Paramount though its voting Class A shares) as well as the National Amusements theater chain and associated real estate assets. Step two would see Skydance acquire Paramount in an all-stock deal valued at circa $4-5B. That’s being worked on and will likely wind up at the high end of the range. … Lastly, Par’s new owners, led by deep-pocketed Oracle founder Larry Ellison and RedBird Capital, would infuse Paramount with a few billion dollars of fresh cash. The company would stay together and stay public.” (link)

Pretty interesting clause in the contract of new Missouri AD Laird Veatch as the institution included a force majeure provision “related to potential changes to the financial model for collegiate athletics given pending litigation and legislation.” If such changes impact the athletic department’s “exigency,” then Veatch’s deal can be renegotiated “with such changes not being known or negotiated until such time as the occurrence of the aforementioned force majeure event or litigation/legislative changes.” Wonder if we’ll also start seeing similar language in coaching contracts. Key updates from the NCAA Board of Governors: “$1.7 million in Association-wide funding — $200,000 in fiscal year 2025 and $1.5 million in fiscal year 2026 — for establishing a National Collegiate women's wrestling championship, with the first championship occurring in the 2025-26 academic year.” Additionally, a $5K penalty for any school that doesn’t submit its annual sexual violence attestation form, plus a public listing on the NCAA website. Also of note: “The Board of Governors discussed transgender student-athlete participation. The current policy remains under review. College sports are the premier stage for women's sports in America and the NCAA will continue to promote Title IX, make unprecedented investments in women's sports and ensure fair competition for all student-athletes in all NCAA championships.” (link)

An NCAA spokesperson declined to confirm who else was under consideration for its NIL services and registry agreement with Teamworks; however, Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit report Opendorse and CLC’s COMPASS platform were both finalists. Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence confirmed his company’s candidacy but declined to comment further, and Learfield President of Brand Management and Marketing Cory Moss: “The COMPASS platform will continue to serve a critical role in facilitating NIL opportunities at scale for student-athletes and provide an important tracking solution for our university and business partners.” (link)

Digital Sport by Hot Paper Lantern SVP of Communications Mike Adorno highlights the importance of strategic communications when raising NIL funds. In a recent study of media members who cover NIL conducted by the firm, 92% of participants said collectives provide “inconsistent communications relating to their goals, missions, wins, partnerships and benefits to the community.” Meanwhile, more than half indicated they don’t understand how funds are distributed or allocated to different sports or athletes, and three out of four reporters said fans and donors have a below-average understanding of NIL. Adorno notes that a marketing email he received from a collective “took two landing pages, plenty of reading and scrolling and four separate clicks to finally get to a donation page. … This is entirely too much effort to assume the average person will [put forth]. It takes much more effort to research and segment audiences, create customized messages and content for each audience and build a consistent external pipeline of spokesperson commentary and news for external media, than just sending out a blast video or email to your donor list. But fundraising should be treated like e-commerce. The more targeted the communication, the greater the chance the audience reacts in the way you need them to.” (link)

The Athletic’s Pete Sampson examines the “hidden impact” of kickers entering the football portal, noting Alabama, Georgia and Notre Dame have all taken kickers this cycle and the Irish have brought in a new kicker for the second year in a row via the portal. Buffalo HC Pete Lembo: “If you’re a school that’s a ‘have’ and a school that’s got the ability to use NIL to augment their recruiting, there’s a lot of good reasons to just sit back and watch. Allow a guy to grow and develop somewhere else and then hopefully be able to attract him at a later point in his career when he’s already well-established as a high-end college player.” To illustrate Lembo’s point, Mitch Jeter, who recently transferred to Notre Dame from South Carolina (where he was coached by Lembo) tells Sampson: “I really just felt like I wanted a little bit of a change of scenery. And Notre Dame kind of really stood out to me with the opportunity that I’m able to build through this brand and this network, as well as get on the field and compete for a national championship.” The increased movement among kickers in the portal is having a trickle-down effect, as high school kicker Nikola Dugandzic explains: “A kicker getting a scholarship out of high school to a Power 5 school is very rare nowadays. … Those schools taking portal guys, that just really is gonna hurt high school kids.” In fact, Sampson notes that scholarship offers for high school prospects have “fallen off a cliff since the transfer portal became standard operating procedure and specialist trainer Chris Sailer adds: “Before, 40 to 50 guys were getting scholarships across FBS. Now it’s 10 to 20. I’m trying to talk parents off the ledge every day because it feels like there’s just nothing out there.” Lots more. (link)

Auburn announces the opening of the Locker Room Club in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Per the Tigers’ release: “Set to be sold on a per-season basis with a capacity of approximately 350, a premier offering included with Locker Room Club access passes will be the opportunity to watch games from an exclusive standing room space along the full east sideline of JHS. Drink rails have been added along the fence line just behind the visiting bench to provide an immersive field level experience for Locker Room Club members.” The Tigers are also offering premium football tailgating opportunities in the Hall of Fame Club at Plainsman Park and will construct permanent field suites at Jordan-Hare Stadium. In partnership with Legends and Conventions, Sports & Leisure International (CSL), Mississippi State enters the final stages of developing a comprehensive long-term master plan for all athletics facilities. Currently, the Bulldogs are assessing feasibility for improvements to Davis Wade Stadium and will send a survey via email to key stakeholders in the next 24 hours. AD Zac Selmon: “The comprehensive plan developed for Davis Wade will provide a complete road map to follow into the future, and while we think you'll be pleased with the immediate updates to improving the sound for 2024 in advance of the permanent sound and lighting upgrades scheduled for the 2025 season, there is even more to do as we approach the goal line on our master plan process.” (link)

ESPN and the NBA have “essentially come to terms” on a media rights package, according to Puck’s John Ourand, who notes that while nothing has been signed, “I’m told that the two sides agreed to the broad framework of a deal that would keep the league’s ‘A package’ with ESPN, which would include exclusive rights to the NBA Finals on ABC. This was a key point for ESPN, which did not want to share the NBA Finals with another media co. As part of its deal, ESPN will have less game inventory, which the league will use to create a third package.” While the NBA’s talks with Warner Bros. Discovery are not as far along, “they have been described as productive,” and Ourand reports WBD’s potential deal would also likely include fewer games with excess inventory going to a third package. Meanwhile, NBC has “aggressively pursued” a deal for its broadcast network and Peacock, “but WBD has backend rights that allow it to match competing offers.” Amazon Prime still has a ways to go to work out a deal, but all signs suggest that it’s likely to land one, and “NBA’s lines to Netflix and Apple are still open, but talks with others have advanced further. Google remains interested in carrying the league’s out-of-market package, NBA League Pass.” No word yet on the financial details. (link)

Following a report that Apple is close to signing a deal with FIFA that would grant Apple global rights for a planned month-long tournament, Puck’s John Ourand observes: “You could make the case that there are some synergies between this FIFA deal and Apple’s MLS deal, which would likely help retain these new subscribers. But it’s hard to shake the idea that the world’s largest company is bottom-feeding. This isn’t the World Cup, after all – it’s a club tournament, scheduled for the middle of summer, which players have already criticized. News of this potential FIFA deal comes as the NBA is entertaining bids for its worldwide rights, and by all accounts, under Eddy Cue, its SVP and resident sports emissary, Apple is not a serious bidder. This FIFA deal confirms what we already know: Apple is still a dabbler in sports rights, at least for now.” (link)
