New Missouri AD Laird Veatch was introduced in Columbia yesterday afternoon: “While I recognize the responsibility and honor that naturally comes with a leadership position like this, I will tell you being the first member of 'Alden's Army' who was actually promoted to this post, provided an extra layer of honor and responsibility that I will take very, very seriously. [...] I may come across as a nice guy, but I was a linebacker at one point in my day, that is inside me somewhere. … I want to be part of winning it all. I want to win SEC championships, national championships, and I really believe there's something special going on here. … I just love the fact that you expect to win championships, that that is the vision, that is the desire, top to bottom. I feel it. I talked to leadership, and you can tell that there is a real commitment to climbing to the top. [...] This is where we want to be. We are ready for our forever home. To be clear, there is no transfer portal for the Veatch family. We are committed.” Tigers President Mun Choi was also asked what changes to the university’s governance structure will ensure Veatch won’t be another AD to exit after a short tenure: “Having four members of the Board of Curators serve on the search committee demonstrates from the beginning we're going to be aligned in our message about what we are looking for in a new AD. The group of four Curators also constitute the IAC (Intercollegiate Athletics Committee). So they'll be working closely with me as well as Laird to ensure that alignment is there. And that comes through dialogue. There are no surprises. We don't want any surprises. And so that approach will continue.” (link, link, link)

Maine AD Jude Killy on the value of using a dossier: “It really helped me consolidate some research. On3’s Eric Prisbell cites sources who say the Group of 5 football playoff idea “entails only Group of Five schools right now” and could potentially expand. “As conference realignment continues to take hold – and super conferences look to congeal – the industry’s so-called second tier could ultimately also include some Big 12 and ACC schools left on the outside of the two super leagues once the music stops.” One source tells Prisbell: “The second tier is so fragmented. Everyone is vying for the adult table. That second tier/G5 is truly ‘Game of Thrones.’” Prisbell goes on to note that “if efforts to join the two super conferences fail, a second-tier end game would be the fallback option for Big 12 schools like Texas Tech, Iowa State and Oklahoma State and ACC schools lacking big brand recognition. They could be second-tier members to complement the Group of Five schools already at that table. That scenario would make Dooley’s concept more appealing to a variety of stakeholders.” Even if the concept remains G5-only, Prisbell reports it could still provide “sustainable, reliable cash flows,” which is attractive for private equity. From a source: “They [PE firms] don’t care whether this is a good football team or not. What they care about is – will there be economic viability? I think there will be for this second-tier league.” (link)

In exploring the FTC’s new restriction on noncompetes, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown points out that “explicit noncompetes are not super common in coaching or senior college administrator gigs, although they do sometimes exist. The mechanism that is meant to prevent coaches from leaving for direct competitors at the drop of the hat is the buyout, a tool that would still be legal under this FTC ruling.” However, “for personnel that work in industries that serve and support college athletics, like athletic apparel, NIL education and software, multimedia rights, gambling education and more, noncompetes are common, even among junior employees. … If all of those restrictive covenants are suddenly unenforceable, I’d imagine you’ll see pressure to improve wages/working conditions, as well as new contractual ‘sticks’ to prevent employees (and institutional knowledge) from walking out the door to competitors.” While the final rule is already headed for legal challenges, Brown notes that in the “short term, I can absolutely see the ruling giving major college sports business-adjacent firms a reason to maaaaaybe not depend on that non-compete being ironclad. Good news if you’re a reporter, college sports SaaS developer or sales manager. Probably bad news if you’re an executive.” (link)

South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley remains devoted to local South Carolina reporters despite becoming a “celebrity coach,” according to Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming. The Post and Courier’s David Cloninger, who began covering Staley in her first season 16 years ago, tells Fleming: “She will always make time for whoever’s asking for a piece of her time. Even though these days, there are more and more people who are asking. She’s never refused me an interview, even when you have to talk about difficult subjects.” For her part, Staley says she prefers talking with local media rather than national media, particularly later in the season because “they know the type of questions they need to ask because they know the inner workings of our team.” She adds: “They’ve watched us, and they’ve followed us, and they know what our standard is, and when we don’t play to our standard, they recognize it. So it’s not like the national media who sees you once or twice or three times, and that’s their opinion. Or they’ll speak from a historical standpoint, not knowing real-time what our team is all about. But the local media, they know. I’d rather spend my time with the people that really know our team, that’s going to report back to our fan base and give them the real.” More. (link)

Ohio professor David Ridpath voices his support for College Sports’ Tomorrow’s super league model on the grounds that it’s “better for schools to play at levels they can afford and sustain while being able to win championships. Models like this can lead to more sport-by-sport and division-by-division membership, which can directly impact the institution with enrollment benefits, Title IX compliance, finances and even competitive equity. Why not explore letting a school commit to certain teams that will compete at the highest level in the top division, while having others at the DII, DIII or even an enhanced college club sport model, all which can lead to more students? Why not have sports governed by sport? This is a way to keep March Madness intact for men’s and women’s Division I basketball without worrying about divisional sport minimums or what level the other sports are competing at.” The financial aspect of college sports, Ridpath continues, is important but needs to be reframed. “There is no reason to require a college athlete to be in a minimum full-time program of studies while developing as an elite athlete for Olympic, national and professional teams while we are being entertained. There is only a finite time for an elite athlete to succeed. Tailor the education around the athletic enterprise either before, during or after the life cycle of the elite athletic performer. Trying to continue the myth of education-first has mostly generated scandal and an expensive industry of focusing on eligibility and not access to a real education, because winning is simply first priority.” More in a guest column for Sportico. Genius Sports Chairman/Horizon Sports and Experiences Co-CEO David Levy offers some thoughts on the future of the sports industry, noting some “exciting trends and opportunities are emerging around women’s sports, data implementation and AI integration.” Levy points out that “larger audiences and fans hungry for engagement want a deeper dive into what’s happening on and off the field” in women’s sports, “and as more women’s programming hours are scheduled, engagement opportunities for these elite female athletes will grow, just as we have seen for men. Brands have responded and are shifting more media and sponsorship dollars into women’s sports than ever before. This will ultimately bring down the costs of data tech and visualizations as scale creates efficiencies.” Meanwhile, the “toolbox for AI integration” is only getting bigger, particularly in the areas of content creation, AI-driven camera systems and virtual graphics and AR. “Brands will be able to sponsor new visual creations in the telecast without disrupting the game or the viewer experience. So whether it’s betting, stats overlays or brand-sponsored activation, the multicast will allow fans to become their own personal director by choosing the feed they want.” While technology fads come and go, Levy posits the “key is to cut through the noise and listen to what fans want, see what is scalable and know what is sellable.” (link)

A “prominent sports investor” tells JohnWallStreet that cord-cutting could be the best thing that ever happened to professional leagues, and JWS explains that’s because it is “forcing rights owners to make the transition to a digital world where they should learn more about their fans and what they value.” Still, streaming needs to solve its fragmentation problem, as cord-cutters increasingly decide to spend their money elsewhere, and the investor notes the easiest way to tap into fans’ other discretionary spending wallets is by adding more value. “Rights owners must now work to develop packaged offerings that appeal to the balance of the fan base. Industry stakeholders view succeeding on that initiative as the business’ ‘holy grail.’ … One can imagine a subscription offering that includes season-long access to the teams’ DTC RSN platform, tickets to a pair of regular season games, a couple of collectibles, a discount code for merchandise, and a personally relevant fan experience. Suddenly, the same individual who had balked at paying $30/mo. for another streaming service may be eager to pay twice as much because he/she feels valued by organization and is pulling funds from different discretionary spending wallets.” More from JWS. ESPN’s Pat McAfee asks NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell if he would help fix college football, and Goodell responds: “Who's in control? Is it the NCAA or conferences? And they're moving around. For us, I don't know enough about it, but if anybody asks us for help, we're going to do our best. … Guys are staying in college football because they're getting paid. I don't think that's a bad thing. I love college football. I watch it all day. They make stars of our players. They give them a platform and get them ready physically and mentally. I think it works." That said, Goodell notes he has a meeting with college football leaders in the next week. “We want to try to help.” Could the NFL absorb college football and bundle the entities together? “I don't see that. At least today. I don't see that in the future." (link)

St. John’s men’s basketball student-athletes Chris Ledlum and Jordan Dingle have filed suit against the NCAA alleging violations of New York antitrust and NIL laws relating to the NCAA denying their request to play a fifth year. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes that “Ledlum (Harvard) and Dingle (Penn) both played in the Ivy League, which canceled the 2020-21 season. So they didn’t get that free year of eligibility like players in other leagues who got to play five seasons. They’re seeking an injunction that allows them to play that fifth year.” (link)

Princeton AD John Mack doesn’t want “student-athletes on our rosters who are only here because we’re paying them,” adding: “The vast majority of student-athletes on any campus on any roster are there because it provides an experience to be a student and an athlete at the institution that they chose, not because someone threw tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars at them. … I don’t think we institutionally see [collectives] as a path of success for us. Largely what collectives across the country have become is just paying kids to be on your roster. It’s been a means to attract kids to your institution, just because you are the highest bidder. That is never going to be who we are, is never going to be our philosophy.” That said, Mack acknowledges the Tigers want to “make sure that we have meaningful opportunities for our student athletes to engage in NIL activities” and cites the department’s partnership with Opendorse. “I think nationally, a lot of student-athletes don’t realize that [building your brand] is part of the NIL enterprises. You have to do some work on the front end to be a more attractive candidate for a lot of these companies.” Overall, Mack concludes, the “lifetime value of a Princeton education will almost always exceed NIL opportunities at other institutions. There will always be a really deep pool of elite student athletes academically and athletically, who value our institutional model and philosophy of the Ivy League student-athlete experience.” (link)

UT Martin AD/Softball Committee Chair Kurt McGuffin joins D1Softball’s In the Circle podcast to discuss several topics, including what the committee is looking for in choosing this year’s NCAA Tournament field. McGuffin emphasizes the importance of keeping the focus on the criteria, “and then when it gets down to those paper-thin margins that I think we’re going to have this year…what’s our point that the 10 people in that room want to make as the tiebreaker, so you could say. Whether it’s top 10 wins, you look at everything, and you look at that total body of work. We’re going to stay on track.” McGuffin adds it’s especially important to come into the room prepared because of the condensed window of time to get the teams right. “I think the key to our softball selections is really using what we call the RAC, the regional advisory committees. There’s five regional advisory committees that are made up of coaches. … Our 10 committee members are assigned to those regional advisory committees and we really focus in on what those coaches are telling us about those regions. … We watch as many games as we can, but I think the key is talking to those coaches.” On the travel logistics, McGuffin says there’s not necessarily a number of flights the committees tries to stay under but members do look back at previous years and “try to keep it as comparable as possible, but I’ve never heard a number from the NCAA staff.” More from McGuffin. Attorneys representing more than two dozen Iowa and Iowa State student-athletes have filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court accusing Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation of violating the athletes’ civil rights and conducting an unreasonable seizure through the Fourth and 14th Amendments. According to the complaint, DCI special agent Brian Sanger allegedly drew boundaries around athletic facilities using technology provided by GeoComply on both campuses in early 2023. Doing so enabled Sanger to identify gambling account numbers but not specific account holders. DCI subsequently subpoenaed various sports betting companies’ records that revealed account holders engaging in sports wagering at the facilities. The plaintiffs are seeking an unspecified amount for deprivation of their constitutional rights, loss of personal reputation, compensatory damages, punitive damages, legal expenses and more. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman reports the Sandy Law Firm is likely to file a similar lawsuit representing seven other athletes. (link)

The Bexar County Commissioner’s Court has approved a $5M investment in UTSA’s planned Basketball and Volleyball Training Facility. The $35M, 52K-sq-ft facility will house the daily operations of the UTSA men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs, and “as part of the construction process, a funding agreement will include a provision that outlines public access similar to the agreements with the Roadrunner Athletics Center for Excellence and the Park West Fieldhouse.” (link)

The NFL is giving players the option to wear Guardian Caps on their helmets during games this season, according to Chief Administrative Officer Dawn Aponte, who, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, “nonchalantly mentioned a new ‘option’”during a recent webinar. Chief Medical Officer Alan Sills responded: “So we might actually see a Guardian Cap on a player in a game this year. That’s possible. Great. Big change coming up.” Florio: “The league possibly is betting on the vast majority of players choosing not to opt for a path that will make them stand out. Regardless, the league has (wisely) realized that it’s impossible to reconcile a desire to maximize player health and safety with a refusal to let players choose to wear an extra piece of safety equipment — especially since it apparently works.” (link)

SBJ’s Bill King explores how Jontay Porter’s betting scandal has brought player props to light and notes that “we can take solace knowing Porter and whomever was in cahoots with him were caught. As each league has found its way from ‘no way’ to ‘maybe this way’ and then ‘giddy up,’ it has rightly agreed that regulating sports betting would make it far easier to monitor and police.” In framing the conversation moving forward, King observes: “Regulated online betting, with bets made from easily trackable devices, monitored for anomalies that raise suspicion, will lead to more detection than the occasional wiretap that catches a bookie while trying for bigger fish. This, we know. What we don’t know is how many of these inevitable transgressions the broader set of sports fans will be willing to tolerate so bettors who want to parlay the stats of a Raptors reserve or take the under on assists on an 18-year-old point guard at a mid-major are able to do so.” (link)

The NBA and Amazon Prime have agreed to the “framework of a deal that will make the streaming service one of the main homes for the league’s games,” according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who reports the package is expected to include “significant regular season and postseason games, perhaps even some conference finals. The anticipation is that the final contract will be for at least a decade and begin the 2025-2026 season.” With two media partners now seemingly in place, Marchand notes that incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery will face off with NBC “for the likely last package of games. Warner Bros. Discovery has the right to match deals, but NBC could try to structure an agreement in a way that makes it difficult.” (link)

Skydance still has the inside track on acquiring Paramount, according to Deadline’s Jill Goldsmith and Anthony D’Alessandro, who add: “The exclusive month-long negotiating period through May 3 is likely to be extended perhaps by a few weeks, Deadline hears, given the complexity of the transaction. The rough contours of a Skydance deal would see a circa $2B payout to Redstone for a majority stake in family holding NAI (which controls Paramount though its voting Class A shares) as well as the National Amusements theater chain and associated real estate assets. Step two would see Skydance acquire Paramount in an all-stock deal valued at circa $4-5B. That’s being worked on and will likely wind up at the high end of the range. … Lastly, Par’s new owners, led by deep-pocketed Oracle founder Larry Ellison and RedBird Capital, would infuse Paramount with a few billion dollars of fresh cash. The company would stay together and stay public.” (link)
