Andscape’s Berry profiles CIAA Commissioner McWilliams, who sums up her decade-plus tenure, explaining: “We’re the same conference, but we’re not the same conference that’s delivering the same thing.” On the league’s financial strength, McWilliams says: “I feel like we’re in the best position ever. … We finally have a reserve. That’s been a big deal and it’s gonna grow.” MEAC (DI) Commissioner Sills, Lincoln (PA) Interim AD Dean and Winston-Salem State AD Thomas praise McWilliams for helping Black women administrators get a seat at the table, while Thomas synthesizes McWilliams’ approach to her job: “McWilliams has very much transformed us into that business entity, and you like that, but it’s with the student-athlete focus. She’s focused on our student-athletes having a great experience but making sure that we are fiscally solvent and sound.” (link)

A district judge orders Florida Tech to reinstate Men’s Rowing as a varsity sport, in part reversing the school’s June 2022 decision to transition Men’s and Women’s Rowing to club status. The ruling requires the institute to "on or before March 12, 2023, provide the men's rowing team with full funding, staffing, and other benefits commensurate with its status as a varsity-level intercollegiate team." Collegiate Sports Connect has an interesting data set on desired compensation for Development officers around the industry broken out by years of experience & competitive division. For example, a fundraiser with seven to nine years in the business has average expected compensation of $93K with a standard deviation of $27K. Lots more interesting data here. (link)

The USGA has launched the U.S. National Development Program, which will “identify, train, develop, fund and support the nation’s most promising junior players – regardless of cultural, geographical or financial background – to ensure that American golf is the global leader in the game.” USGA CEO Whan: “Today, nearly every other competitive golf country in the world offers a national development program to foster and develop its elite junior talent. The United States is at a huge competitive disadvantage in this regard, as we simply ask our athletes, parents and coaches to forge their own path, without any unified national guidance or financial support. … Today, that ends. Today, we start building a junior development program that will ensure a stronger American pipeline of diverse, high-potential talent.” (link)

With an uncertain economy and the $80B in federal aid colleges received to get them through COVID all but gone, higher ed institutions across the country are facing some harsh economic realities, The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Gardner observes. Enrollment is the industry’s most daunting hurdle, as the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center reports that undergraduate enrollment declined by 4% from 2020 to 2022, and the ongoing – and unavoidable – predicament institutions now face is an even smaller pool from which to draw students. According to Carleton (DIII) professor Grawe, more than half the states are projected to lose as many as 15% of their college-bound high-school graduates by 2029. Furthermore, increasing tuition is an increasingly difficult sell due to the “public narrative about student debt and the high price of college makes,” Gardner notes. Ultimately, rpk Group Founder Staisloff finds that with smaller enrollments, flat or declining state funding and increasing costs, the sky may not be falling but “the cloud ceiling keeps dropping and dropping and dropping and dropping, and that’s getting harder to ignore.” (link)
