Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the league’s progression over the last five years, Gill’s service on multiple NCAA Committees and his perspective on NIL, student-athletes employment and other pressing issues within the industry. Gill: “I think the external pressures that are on college athletics have revealed that the current model needs to be adjusted. I just don't know that it can survive in the long term, and so we've got to figure out what is the next generation of the model. I think kind of the role of student-athletes, whether they’re employees or not, I think is part of that discussion. I think trying to figure out the benefits that are afforded to student-athletes as well. So really I think all those are questions. They’re open-ended questions, and we have a lot of folks that we need to work with, whether it’s ADs presidents, student-athletes, coaches, all working together. But also we’ve got to work with Congress, we’ve got to work with state capitals and state governments, and we’ve got to have a collective effort to create a system that is survivable in today’s environment.” More from Gill on Connect. Colorado Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Alexis Williams joins AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at 2024 PACnet to talk about the growth of CU’s external units after embracing emerging markets and the recent hire of Football HC Deion Sanders. Williams also discusses the importance of personalizing one’s management approach to accommodate different personalities and learning styles and emphasizes the need for team bonding and team building in order to develop a unit that can row in the same direction. Williams on Year 2 of the Coach Prime Effect: “We’re shifting our focus more on improving the experience a fan has when they're on campus, in the game, and making sure it’s family-friendly and just as exciting from the tailgating to coming into the game, everything. … We haven't had to spend as much on marketing to sell tickets, so we've been able to shift that more on ads to brand our smaller sports, our Olympic sports or just the CU brand as a whole. There’s so many more people now wearing CU gear or wearing black and gold that have become CU fans because of us hiring Coach Prime. So, we will take that and we are using that to generate more incremental revenue in other ways.” Full Q&A. (link)

Staying in Boulder, following Colorado’s spring game, Football HC Deion Sanders was asked about the possibility of seeking an NFL job next year when his sons Shedeur and Shilo could be playing in the league. Coach Prime on what he says to recruits who want to know: "I tell them the truth. I'm a father, not a baby-daddy. I don't follow my kids. I pave roads for my kids. I build generational wealth for my kids. I lead my kids. I don't follow my kids. So, I do not plan on following my kids to the NFL. But I'm thankful, I'm glad that you already pretty much put them in the NFL. That means you believe in them. But I'm not that kind of father. I have work to do here, I absolutely love it here. It's beautiful here. … I don't really fly fish, but I've been known to be fly while I fish. I want my own line of jet skis, which we are working on. I love everything about this part of the country and the fan base that we have here. I just want to bless you with a tremendously successful team, I really do. That's my heart." (link)

Husch Blackwell has released its 2024 Compliance Report and observes that in a post-Alston world, “there is little to no deference to any concept of NCAA amateurism. It is equally true that the [U.S. Supreme Court] Justices went out of their way in Alston to indicate that their decision was not intended to address ‘pay for play’ or athlete employment, which would fundamentally alter the pre-professional collegiate sports model in the United States.” On the topic of student-athlete employment, Husch Blackwell addresses the issue of control in recent NLRB cases and posits: “This ‘employment debate’ is based on a belief that there is an economic fairness issue because of the money derived from media deals in the sports of football and men’s basketball. The belief is underscored, not only by the fact that the complaint involves only three sports, but also by the reliance on the NCAA and its conferences earning millions of dollars in profit as a rationale for employment categorization. Never mind that the money from Division I football and men’s basketball is used to fund all other sports, including those in Division II and Division III, as well as the pre-professional league and Olympic training models; or that college athletes generally have a competition window of approximately four to five years. The economic fairness concerns disregard the institutional brand’s role in generating value to support broad-based opportunities, the limited and transitory nature of college athletes, and the educational value of sport within the larger context of higher education. Pending employment status decisions could also lead to athletes who perfect the exact same ‘job’ for the same ‘employer’ being classified differently (e.g., softball athletes and men’s basketball athletes).” Lots more. Lamar inks a five-year deal with Under Armour to provide uniforms and other gear for all the Cardinals' varsity sports teams. Also out of Beaumont, Lamar will bring in an outside firm that will be on campus in the coming weeks to study campus-wide branding at the school, part of which will be examining which logos work best for the institution. Of the study, Cardinals’ AD Jeff O’Malley says: “I wouldn’t call it a redesign, but we’re doing a lot of research to see what sticks. We want to create some consistency and do what's best for our athletes.” (link)

Washington reported $151.6M in revenue last year with a $1.6M operating surplus, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes the Huskies received $10.3M in direct university support. “Remove that campus support, and Washington’s surplus turns into an $8.7M shortfall. Meanwhile, Oregon reported $150.6M in revenue and an operating surplus of $3.8M, all while receiving no transfers from campus. The Ducks are entirely self-sufficient, a notable exception in the highly subsidized Pac-12, where the average amount of university support for athletics was $13.7M last year.” Wilner reports that throughout the Pac-12, schools receive the following campus subsidies: Oregon: $0; UCLA: $2.1M; Washington State: $6.8M; Washington: $10.3M; Oregon State: $10.7M; Arizona: $12.2 M (excludes $31.6M loan); Stanford: $12.3M; Utah: $16.3M; Arizona State: $16.6M; Colorado: $29.4M; and Cal: $33.8M. Oregon’s revenue includes $35M in conference and NCAA distributions, $24.3M in ticket sales, $40.4M in contributions, and $26.5M in royalties, licensing and sponsorship. Now that the Ducks and Huskies are headed to the Big Ten, Wilner notes: “Competing with Michigan and Ohio State would be tough enough on equal fiscal footing. But for the two half-share members in the Pacific Northwest, the path is treacherous.” (link)

Skydance Media has submitted its "best and final'' offer in its bid to merge the company with Paramount Global. Seeking Alpha’s Joshua Fineman reports Skydance CEO David Ellison is “offering to purchase a block of Paramount shares at a premium to their current price,” and the Redstone family, which owns a majority of the company’s voting shares, “have agreed to let nonvoting shareholders have a say on whether a transaction should be allowed.” Paramount’s special committee is still undecided about agreeing to a deal with Ellison given the opposition from other investors, and CNBC reported over the weekend that Paramount plans to fire its CEO Bob Bakish as early as Monday morning.” (link)

The MLBPA in a memo to players said the changes to this year’s uniforms which led to backlash from fans and players was “entirely a Nike issue. At its core, what has happened here is that Nike was innovating something that didn’t need to be innovated.” The union also criticized Nike’s response to the criticism, describing it as “Nothing to see here. Players will need to adjust.” Also from the memo: “Fanatics has been, and continues to be, a great partner with the Players and has been making the uniforms for the last eight years without issue. Fanatics recognizes the vital importance of soliciting player feedback, obtaining player buy-in, and not being afraid to have difficult conversations about jerseys or trading cards.” Further, the MLBPA promises that changes are coming to next year’s uniforms. Jersey lettering will return to the larger size used in previous years, the union says Nike has committed to working on color differences and “perspiration challenges.” For the pants, players will have the full suite of tailoring options available in prior years as well as a return to “higher quality” zippers. Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher examines the power of releasing new stadium or arena renderings, including when it goes wrong. Fisher cites the planned ballpark for the Oakland A’s as an example of renderings backfiring. “The A’s were already fighting uphill in the court of public opinion after acknowledging a prior set of stadium renderings were dismissed by the team as garbage, and they were merely a tool to help secure $380M in public funding for the project. But the new drawings, showing a ballpark that the Bjarke Ingels Group described as a ‘spherical armadillo,’ were missing many core requirements of any MLB facility such as bullpens, a batter’s eye, and stadium lighting, and they were widely mocked by fans. The A’s, perhaps in a desperate attempt to save face, turned off social media comments on X and LinkedIn for their posts of the renderings.” Brailsford & Dunlavey President Christopher Dunlavey: “These images, when communicated correctly, can be a very powerful marketing tool and help generate a groundswell of interest.” However, he adds: “Reaction to a set of renderings can often take on a life of its own, and you can run the risk of a rendering codifying a negative opinion.” Gensler Head of Sports Design Ryan Sickman on managing expectations: “A rendering is an idea of what a project can be, and how you sell that idea to the public or whatever authority you’re going before. As you then fully dive into things and they become real, there are all sorts of factors that can come into play, including availability of materials, construction timetables, funding issues, what have you. In reality, something almost always gets changed. But the goal is still to reflect reality as much as possible.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy dives deeper into NIL & how it’s impacting the NFL Draft with a Big Ten “staffer” commenting: “There’s more security [as a returning college player]. You get drafted as a seventh-round pick, get cut in camp and you’re out on the streets. You come back your junior or senior year, or you’re a [Group of Five player] that has a really good year [and you transfer up], you’re much more secure making $500,000 in the [Power Five] in one year than you are taking the jump going to the NFL, hell yeah.” Blueprint Sports CEO Rob Sine adds context: “The number of football players that are making more than six figures has spiked. In the realm of $250,000 to $500,000 is becoming the norm for some of the stars that are out there.” (link)

Knight Commission CEO Amy Privette Perko sat down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss the finances of college sports and the possibility of FBS football breaking away. Perko also highlights the commission’s C.A.R.E Model, which is designed to restructure the way college sports distributes more the $3.5B in annual revenues (projected to be more than $7B annually by 2032) with athletes’ education, health, safety, well-being, and gender equity. Perko notes that with upwards of $1B in new, uncommitted money entering the ecosystem via the College Football Playoff expansion, “that’s the best time to change revenue distribution – when it’s new and it’s uncommitted. And for that reason, We really applaud President Baker's proposal to try to put out there some different initiatives that would direct more of this new money coming in at the very top athletes. But we think it's also an opportunity to really overhaul a lot more than that and overhaul the NCAA revenue distribution system. We've also shared with the CFP it’s time for the CFP to restrict some of its new revenue [to] be directed and spent only on athlete education, health and safety.” Lots more on Connect. (link)

Motorola has unveiled a new Motorola Razr featuring Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders. Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh notes the “premium foldable phone has a black and gold finish and features both his ‘You Gotta Believe’ mantra and signature on the body. It retails for $149.99, but customers who subscribe to Boost Mobile’s $60/mo. plan at a Boost Mobile store can get the device for free.” Those who buy the phone will also receive weekly motivational messages from Sanders, and anyone who purchases the device within the first month is eligible to receive a surprise phone call from Coach Prime, who says: “I’m all about connectivity and BABY, WE GOT THAT! With campus subsidies removed from the arithmetic, Cal and Stanford combined for a $122.7M budget deficit over the past two years: $46.9M in FY22 and $75.8M in FY23, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who wonders whether incoming Cal Chancellor Richard Lyons and new Stanford President Jonathan Levin will continue to offer the same level of support as their predecessors. A Cardinal spokesperson tells Wilner: “Stanford will join the ACC as a full member, initially contributing a portion of media revenues back to the conference until it ultimately receives a full share. Stanford is working through the financial dimensions of this arrangement and has developed a financial model leaning on new and increased revenue streams, philanthropy, and institutional support, which will ensure that our student-athletes have the support needed to continue competing for national excellence.” Meanwhile, Wilner notes the “Bears have yet to finalize their strategy as they await a decision from the University of California’s Board of Regents on the so-called ‘Berkeley tax,’ by which UCLA would be required to funnel some of its Big Ten revenue to Cal’s athletic department.” A Cal spokesperson says: “Intercollegiate athletics are an essential part of the university, and we have been clear in our commitment to sustain a broad-based program, and to enabling our student athletes to thrive. In order to have a program that is consistent with our values and budgetary reality, we are working to confront the financial challenges through the development of new and alternative forms of revenue streams while carefully controlling expenses.” (link)

Seattle police suggest members of Washington’s athletic department knew about and discussed a sexual assault allegation against football student-athlete Tybo Rogers before allowing him to continue playing in the fall, according to the Seattle Times’ Catalina Gaitan and Caitlyn Freeman. Seattle PD Detective Emily Akiyama writes in a report of the investigation: “The timeline of social media posts as well as [Rogers’] suspension led me to believe there is a connection between his suspension and [the alleged victim’s] disclosure of the assault, especially after the comments made by the coaching staff.” Gaitan & Freeman also note that “investigators pointed to text messages involving UW athletics staff referencing Rogers that were sent within two weeks of the woman’s Nov. 28 social media post and Title IX report. The messages were followed up with a phone call, so the responses weren’t documented. One screenshot shows a text message sent Dec. 6 to an unidentified UW football coach asking the coach to share contact information for a defense attorney with Rogers. Another screenshot showed Cameron Elisara, director of football player development, messaged then-UW head coach Kalen DeBoer the same day.” Elisara’s text read: “WTF did Tybo do? I got people blowing me up about it. I won’t say anything if you don’t want me to obviously but I was just on ESPN radio and somebody brought it up.” In the screenshot, DeBoer did not message back but instead FaceTimed Elisara. More from Gaitan & Freeman. (link)

Spirit headliner Varsity has settled another lawsuit, this one an antitrust challenge “filed in December 2020, the class-action suit asked the court for treble damages, the disgorgement of ‘unjust enrichment’ and injunctive relief.” More from Sportico: “As of now, the terms of the settlement, and to what extent it is likely to impact the competitive cheer industry, are not known. [...] The disposition of this latest lawsuit could play a key role in whether Bain can offload Varsity at some point, either by taking it public or selling it.” (link)
