UAB Football has become the first team to sign with a players association in Athletes.org, per ESPN's Dan Murphy. Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale: "We're not in there to get them to boycott, but we do understand the power they can have. When it is time to negotiate, we'll be prepared to have UAB be a part of that negotiation. We're building the pipes for the negotiation of the new deal for college athletics - the pipes for the athletes to be in that conversation." Blazers HC Trent Dilfer: "This is a forcing function to tell ADs and presidents around the country to put their money where their mouth is. [...] Every college coach, if you really are about your players, then let them organize. You're scared because you think your comfortable life is going to go away. If you care about your players, let their lives be comfortable like yours." With this move, AO reports its current membership is 2,945 athletes, 2,026 of whom compete in power conferences. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner explores Washington State and Oregon State’s options for rebuilding the Pac-12 and points out the schools need to ensure short-term security and long-term prosperity. “A full reverse merger with the 12 schools in the Mountain West, to form the Pac-14, would not satisfy the latter requirement. Why? Because too many of the 14 members would offer below-standard media and competitive value. If the Hotline were advising WSU and OSU, our focus would be on luring the top schools in the Mountain West (San Diego State, Boise State, Fresno State and Colorado State, plus UNLV) and a few schools from other time zones. Expand the footprint. Grow the market. Add members with the potential to flourish. That means examining the viability of WAC, Conference USA and American Athletic Conference schools.” Meanwhile, if the ACC “collapses in the wake of lawsuits by Florida State and Clemson, the calculation could change for WSU and OSU.” (link)

Richmond AD John Hardt tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor that it’s a “little too early” to gauge Virginia’s new NIL law: “I’ve been looking at it. I’ve discussed it with our legal folks and the general counsel’s office. I see some benefits. I also see some large question marks that are still unresolved. I don’t like the fact that it puts us in conflict with the NCAA’s guidelines and regulations. I’m not clear that we still wouldn’t have some liabilities to address down the road, so I’d like more clarification there. … “I do think it’s going to push other states to address these issues. And I think it’s going to push, ultimately, the NCAA, perhaps even our representatives in Washington, D.C., to take a harder look more quickly at the NIL landscape for college athletes.” Asked whether fans should donate to the Spider Athletic Fund or the Spiders’ Collective, Hardt makes it clear that “we need support both from our annual fund and the Spider Athletic Fund, and also the collective for NIL. And as far as how that gets split up, it’s really up to the individual. Typically what we try to do is have the donors look at what they’ve been doing for us in support for Spider athletics, and then try to match that without diminishing that level of support for a gift to the NIL, so we’re not creating a deficit situation in our fundraising.” Hardt on the NIL market: “I do think there’s a limit out there. But in an unregulated marketplace, which is what it has become in certain sports, who knows what the limit is? I know that there’s got to be some natural limits and ceilings that people have. But I think what we’re seeing across the country is that’s a lot higher than people suspected it might have been even two years ago.” Full Q&A. (link)

The Connecticut General Assembly will decide by the time its legislative session ends next week whether it will allocate $100M for the renovation of Connecticut’s Gampel Pavilion. According to CT Insider’s Mike Anthony, $10M in state bonding has already been appropriated for immediate improvements to the arena, including a scoreboard, court-level digital infrastructure and lower-bowl seating. Huskies AD David Benedict: “We’re working with the state right now. There are a lot of conversations. We've been engaged for the past six months and bringing a lot of people to campus, and showing them different facilities and talking about what, potentially, there would be if we're able to make an investment. We're approximately 35 years into Gampel. There's not been a major renovation since it was completed. So as we look to the future and the state wants us to look long-term into playing at XL, the idea here and the request is, ‘Look, if you want us to continue playing there and support that endeavor, we need some support here.’” House Speaker Matt Ritter (D-1): “I think if Gampel is going to be renovated, there is going to be some expectation of the university raising some of those funds. But the state built the original one and so it’s not a crazy ask for the state to come in and step in. I think we have to finalize what the numbers will look like, though.” (link)

Quakers AD Alanna Shanahan: "We are so excited to open this world-class facility for our student-athletes. This complex will be a differentiator for our football program, and we are so grateful to the individuals who turned this dream into a reality." Penn worked with EwingCole as the architect and P. Agnes as the construction manager for the project. (link)

Duke has installed a new three-display, center-hung Daktronics scoreboard inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The main video display measures approximately 11.5 feet high by 59 feet around while the lower ring measures 2.5 feet high by 52.5 feet around. On the underbelly, catering to fans sitting closer to the action, a ring display measures 2.5 feet high by 39.5 feet around. The Blue Devils also partnered with EwingCole on the design, manufacture and installation of the new scoreboard, which will add 900 square feet of digital canvas to the arena. (link)

EA Sports College Football 25 will have multiple cover athletes, according to Extra Points’ Matt Brown, who reports: “Each cover athlete is a current college football player who plays in a different power conference. There was plenty of internet speculation that the cover athlete could potentially be a coach (Nick Saban?), or any number of athletes that played during the years the game was not released (previous Heisman winners?) or even fans/mascots (the Oregon Duck?!?). Those were reasonable guesses, but I’ve been told that the athletes will be current athletes…people you will see play actual college football this season.” Brown also observes the NFL Draft is increasingly dominated by big-brand schools, noting Michigan’s 13 draft picks outpaced the AAC, Conference USA, Mountain West and MAC combined. “I’m not shocked by this development. Elite college performance helps, but success in the NFL is very much about hitting the genetic lottery, and the biggest, strongest and fastest dudes…if they end up at places like Rice or Western Michigan, are now unlikely to stay there. … Compare these numbers to a few of the drafts before COVID, NIL and The Portal. The 2017 NFL draft had 11 non-P5 picks in the first two rounds. The 2018 Draft had 12. Last year had two, and neither of them came in the first round.” (link)

Private regional colleges with small student bodies and high acceptance rates will face increasingly stiff competition from public institutions amid widespread demographic challenges, according to a new report from Moody’s that indicates these issues will be particularly pronounced in the Midwest and Northeast, where analysts predict higher education enrollment will plummet in the coming years. Small private colleges have increased spending on employee salaries and student wellness services since the start of the pandemic, and analysts note that “maintaining small class sizes has become more expensive.” From the report: “Exacerbating the race for enrollment are the many strong state institutions that also compete for students in these regions, often with much lower tuition costs than what the private universities can offer.” (link)

Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the league’s progression over the last five years, Gill’s service on multiple NCAA Committees and his perspective on NIL, student-athletes employment and other pressing issues within the industry. Gill: “I think the external pressures that are on college athletics have revealed that the current model needs to be adjusted. I just don't know that it can survive in the long term, and so we've got to figure out what is the next generation of the model. I think kind of the role of student-athletes, whether they’re employees or not, I think is part of that discussion. I think trying to figure out the benefits that are afforded to student-athletes as well. So really I think all those are questions. They’re open-ended questions, and we have a lot of folks that we need to work with, whether it’s ADs presidents, student-athletes, coaches, all working together. But also we’ve got to work with Congress, we’ve got to work with state capitals and state governments, and we’ve got to have a collective effort to create a system that is survivable in today’s environment.” More from Gill on Connect. Colorado Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Alexis Williams joins AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at 2024 PACnet to talk about the growth of CU’s external units after embracing emerging markets and the recent hire of Football HC Deion Sanders. Williams also discusses the importance of personalizing one’s management approach to accommodate different personalities and learning styles and emphasizes the need for team bonding and team building in order to develop a unit that can row in the same direction. Williams on Year 2 of the Coach Prime Effect: “We’re shifting our focus more on improving the experience a fan has when they're on campus, in the game, and making sure it’s family-friendly and just as exciting from the tailgating to coming into the game, everything. … We haven't had to spend as much on marketing to sell tickets, so we've been able to shift that more on ads to brand our smaller sports, our Olympic sports or just the CU brand as a whole. There’s so many more people now wearing CU gear or wearing black and gold that have become CU fans because of us hiring Coach Prime. So, we will take that and we are using that to generate more incremental revenue in other ways.” Full Q&A. (link)

Staying in Boulder, following Colorado’s spring game, Football HC Deion Sanders was asked about the possibility of seeking an NFL job next year when his sons Shedeur and Shilo could be playing in the league. Coach Prime on what he says to recruits who want to know: "I tell them the truth. I'm a father, not a baby-daddy. I don't follow my kids. I pave roads for my kids. I build generational wealth for my kids. I lead my kids. I don't follow my kids. So, I do not plan on following my kids to the NFL. But I'm thankful, I'm glad that you already pretty much put them in the NFL. That means you believe in them. But I'm not that kind of father. I have work to do here, I absolutely love it here. It's beautiful here. … I don't really fly fish, but I've been known to be fly while I fish. I want my own line of jet skis, which we are working on. I love everything about this part of the country and the fan base that we have here. I just want to bless you with a tremendously successful team, I really do. That's my heart." (link)

Husch Blackwell has released its 2024 Compliance Report and observes that in a post-Alston world, “there is little to no deference to any concept of NCAA amateurism. It is equally true that the [U.S. Supreme Court] Justices went out of their way in Alston to indicate that their decision was not intended to address ‘pay for play’ or athlete employment, which would fundamentally alter the pre-professional collegiate sports model in the United States.” On the topic of student-athlete employment, Husch Blackwell addresses the issue of control in recent NLRB cases and posits: “This ‘employment debate’ is based on a belief that there is an economic fairness issue because of the money derived from media deals in the sports of football and men’s basketball. The belief is underscored, not only by the fact that the complaint involves only three sports, but also by the reliance on the NCAA and its conferences earning millions of dollars in profit as a rationale for employment categorization. Never mind that the money from Division I football and men’s basketball is used to fund all other sports, including those in Division II and Division III, as well as the pre-professional league and Olympic training models; or that college athletes generally have a competition window of approximately four to five years. The economic fairness concerns disregard the institutional brand’s role in generating value to support broad-based opportunities, the limited and transitory nature of college athletes, and the educational value of sport within the larger context of higher education. Pending employment status decisions could also lead to athletes who perfect the exact same ‘job’ for the same ‘employer’ being classified differently (e.g., softball athletes and men’s basketball athletes).” Lots more. Lamar inks a five-year deal with Under Armour to provide uniforms and other gear for all the Cardinals' varsity sports teams. Also out of Beaumont, Lamar will bring in an outside firm that will be on campus in the coming weeks to study campus-wide branding at the school, part of which will be examining which logos work best for the institution. Of the study, Cardinals’ AD Jeff O’Malley says: “I wouldn’t call it a redesign, but we’re doing a lot of research to see what sticks. We want to create some consistency and do what's best for our athletes.” (link)

Washington reported $151.6M in revenue last year with a $1.6M operating surplus, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes the Huskies received $10.3M in direct university support. “Remove that campus support, and Washington’s surplus turns into an $8.7M shortfall. Meanwhile, Oregon reported $150.6M in revenue and an operating surplus of $3.8M, all while receiving no transfers from campus. The Ducks are entirely self-sufficient, a notable exception in the highly subsidized Pac-12, where the average amount of university support for athletics was $13.7M last year.” Wilner reports that throughout the Pac-12, schools receive the following campus subsidies: Oregon: $0; UCLA: $2.1M; Washington State: $6.8M; Washington: $10.3M; Oregon State: $10.7M; Arizona: $12.2 M (excludes $31.6M loan); Stanford: $12.3M; Utah: $16.3M; Arizona State: $16.6M; Colorado: $29.4M; and Cal: $33.8M. Oregon’s revenue includes $35M in conference and NCAA distributions, $24.3M in ticket sales, $40.4M in contributions, and $26.5M in royalties, licensing and sponsorship. Now that the Ducks and Huskies are headed to the Big Ten, Wilner notes: “Competing with Michigan and Ohio State would be tough enough on equal fiscal footing. But for the two half-share members in the Pacific Northwest, the path is treacherous.” (link)

Skydance Media has submitted its "best and final'' offer in its bid to merge the company with Paramount Global. Seeking Alpha’s Joshua Fineman reports Skydance CEO David Ellison is “offering to purchase a block of Paramount shares at a premium to their current price,” and the Redstone family, which owns a majority of the company’s voting shares, “have agreed to let nonvoting shareholders have a say on whether a transaction should be allowed.” Paramount’s special committee is still undecided about agreeing to a deal with Ellison given the opposition from other investors, and CNBC reported over the weekend that Paramount plans to fire its CEO Bob Bakish as early as Monday morning.” (link)

The MLBPA in a memo to players said the changes to this year’s uniforms which led to backlash from fans and players was “entirely a Nike issue. At its core, what has happened here is that Nike was innovating something that didn’t need to be innovated.” The union also criticized Nike’s response to the criticism, describing it as “Nothing to see here. Players will need to adjust.” Also from the memo: “Fanatics has been, and continues to be, a great partner with the Players and has been making the uniforms for the last eight years without issue. Fanatics recognizes the vital importance of soliciting player feedback, obtaining player buy-in, and not being afraid to have difficult conversations about jerseys or trading cards.” Further, the MLBPA promises that changes are coming to next year’s uniforms. Jersey lettering will return to the larger size used in previous years, the union says Nike has committed to working on color differences and “perspiration challenges.” For the pants, players will have the full suite of tailoring options available in prior years as well as a return to “higher quality” zippers. Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher examines the power of releasing new stadium or arena renderings, including when it goes wrong. Fisher cites the planned ballpark for the Oakland A’s as an example of renderings backfiring. “The A’s were already fighting uphill in the court of public opinion after acknowledging a prior set of stadium renderings were dismissed by the team as garbage, and they were merely a tool to help secure $380M in public funding for the project. But the new drawings, showing a ballpark that the Bjarke Ingels Group described as a ‘spherical armadillo,’ were missing many core requirements of any MLB facility such as bullpens, a batter’s eye, and stadium lighting, and they were widely mocked by fans. The A’s, perhaps in a desperate attempt to save face, turned off social media comments on X and LinkedIn for their posts of the renderings.” Brailsford & Dunlavey President Christopher Dunlavey: “These images, when communicated correctly, can be a very powerful marketing tool and help generate a groundswell of interest.” However, he adds: “Reaction to a set of renderings can often take on a life of its own, and you can run the risk of a rendering codifying a negative opinion.” Gensler Head of Sports Design Ryan Sickman on managing expectations: “A rendering is an idea of what a project can be, and how you sell that idea to the public or whatever authority you’re going before. As you then fully dive into things and they become real, there are all sorts of factors that can come into play, including availability of materials, construction timetables, funding issues, what have you. In reality, something almost always gets changed. But the goal is still to reflect reality as much as possible.” (link)
