Wells announces it will close at the end of the semester. Board of Trustees Chair Marie Chapman Carroll and President Jonathan Gibralter writing: “As you may be aware, many small colleges like Wells have faced enormous financial challenges. These challenges have been exacerbated by a global pandemic, a shrinking pool of undergraduate students nationwide, inflationary pressures, and an overall negative sentiment towards higher education. Members of the board, many of whom are Wells graduates, have spent years trying to find creative solutions to raise revenues in hopes of avoiding closure, including most recently having conversations with other academic partners. We acknowledge the work from all board members and college leaders, especially members of the Cabinet, our faculty, staff, and graduates on creating strategic plans, sponsoring aggressive fundraising campaigns, launching innovative new programs and managing our resources with care. Your efforts are appreciated more than you know. But revenues, unfortunately, are not projected to be sufficient for Wells’ long-term financial stability.” (link)

Atlantic East Commissioner Jessica Huntley sits down with Connect’s Stephanie Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss the addition of Women’s Flag Football as a sponsored sport, expanding the reach of DIII and more. The idea for the league to add Women’s Flag Football was sparked during a conversation at a Memorial Day family gathering, that ultimately led Huntley to connect with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and RCX Sports. Huntley: “I presented this to my ADs and presidents and just said, ‘Listen the NFL is behind this and they're not going to let this fail.’ I think this is the future and and for me, as a female, just to be able to provide another opportunity for women in a sport that is the most watched sport in America, so giving them a taste of that opportunity I just think was something that I thought was going to continue to expand and I thought that this was the right time for us to try.” On the topic of growing exposure and streaming: “There’s conversations about should we be monetizing this and opening this to more individuals. We just had a Division III commissioners meeting and we were talking about should there be a Division III opportunity to get more exposure because some of our content is amazing. […] We do have amazing athletes and amazing competition. As sport sponsorship continues to be a significant area of interest, D3.ticker surveyed DIII ADs across the country about their thoughts on adding or eliminating sports and the health of their respective institutions. Overall, 53% of respondents are considering adding sports, with 16% considering eliminating sports. Of those considering expanding their portfolios, Women’s Flag Football and Women’s Wrestling are most of interest to DIII leaders. Notable from DI: UAB (DI) Football has become the first team to sign with a players association in Athletes.org, per ESPN's Dan Murphy. Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale: "We're not in there to get them to boycott, but we do understand the power they can have. When it is time to negotiate, we'll be prepared to have UAB be a part of that negotiation. We're building the pipes for the negotiation of the new deal for college athletics - the pipes for the athletes to be in that conversation." With this move, AO reports its current membership is 2,945 athletes, 2,026 of whom compete in power conferences. (link, link)

Husch Blackwell has released its 2024 Compliance Report and observes that in post-Alston world, “there is little to no deference to any concept of NCAA amateurism. It is equally true that the [U.S. Supreme Court] Justices went out of their way in Alston to indicate that their decision was not intended to address ‘pay for play’ or athlete employment, which would fundamentally alter the pre-professional collegiate sports model in the United States.” On the topic of student-athlete employment, Husch Blackwell addresses the issue of control in recent NLRB cases and posits: “This ‘employment debate’ is based on a belief that there is an economic fairness issue because of the money derived from media deals in the sports of football and men’s basketball. The belief is underscored, not only by the fact that the complaint involves only three sports, but also by the reliance on the NCAA and its conferences earning millions of dollars in profit as a rationale for employment categorization. Never mind that the money from Division I football and men’s basketball is used to fund all other sports, including those in Division II and Division III, as well as the pre-professional league and Olympic training models; or that college athletes generally have a competition window of approximately four to five years. The economic fairness concerns disregard the institutional brand’s role in generating value to support broad-based opportunities, the limited and transitory nature of college athletes, and the educational value of sport within the larger context of higher education. Pending employment status decisions could also lead to athletes who perfect the exact same ‘job’ for the same ‘employer’ being classified differently (e.g., softball athletes and men’s basketball athletes).” Lots more. Deloitte in its report on 2024 higher ed trends calls for presidents to be more involved in the conversations around athletics: “Presidents and their leadership teams should be prepared with risk mitigation strategies and be ready to take decisive action in partnership with other university officials, the [NCAA], their conference leaders, and state legislators. … In evaluating the president’s role in athletics decisions, the following questions must be considered: When should the president be consulted? What relationships should the president have with the NCAA, their conference leaders, and state legislators? How and when should the president be the decision-maker? In conjunction with the governing board, in-house counsel, and strategic communications teams, presidents should define their roles and develop plans for decision-making, risk mitigation, and crisis management.” Deloitte also advises establishing institutional guidelines for the financial support of student-athletes; developing approaches to support student-athletes' mental and physical well-being; establishing processes and governance around Title IX implications; and developing long-term strategies for preserving the unique character of college athletics. “The distinct culture, traditions, and experiences of college sports differentiate them from professional leagues. Preserving these characteristics in an evolving landscape will require strategies to prevent damage to the institution’s connection with students, parents, alumni, donors, and community members.” Lots more in the full report. Private regional colleges with small student bodies and high acceptance rates will face increasingly stiff competition from public institutions amid widespread demographic challenges, according to a new report from Moody’s that indicates these issues will be particularly pronounced in the Midwest and Northeast, where analysts predict higher education enrollment will plummet in the coming years. Small private colleges have increased spending on employee salaries and student wellness services since the start of the pandemic, and analysts note that “maintaining small class sizes has become more expensive.” From the report: “Exacerbating the race for enrollment are the many strong state institutions that also compete for students in these regions, often with much lower tuition costs than what the private universities can offer.” (link)
