Lewis-Clark State AD Brooke Henze will step down from her alma mater at the end of June after her seventh year leading the Warriors. President Cynthia Pemberton: “I've heard that Brooke was the type of student-athlete who gave it her whole heart and left it all on the court. I have no trouble believing this to be true because that's what she's done in her 18 years of service at Lewis-Clark State College. No one has worked harder, no one has cared more deeply, no one has put in more time, no one has overcome bigger challenges, and no one has made a bigger impact on Warrior athletics than Brooke.” (link)

Notable Developments Across College Athletics:

+ The NCAA and power conferences are in "deep discussions" to settle the House v. NCAA class action lawsuit, per ESPN's Pete Thamel and Dan Murphy, who report: "While sources stressed that no deal is imminent, details about what a multibillion-dollar settlement could look like are expected to be shared with campuses in the near future. There are myriad variables to get to the finish line and still some obstacles and objections at the campus level, but sources indicate that progress has ramped up in recent weeks. A settlement would provide some legal relief for a college sports industry that's been peppered by lawsuits. It could also serve as a keystone piece to formulating a more stable future. With the settlement expected to cost billions in back pay for former athletes, it would likely also require the NCAA and conferences to agree to a system for sharing more revenue with some of the players moving forward." + UAB (NCAA DI) Football has become the first team to sign with a players association in Athletes.org, per ESPN's Dan Murphy. Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale: "We're not in there to get them to boycott, but we do understand the power they can have. When it is time to negotiate, we'll be prepared to have UAB be a part of that negotiation. We're building the pipes for the negotiation of the new deal for college athletics - the pipes for the athletes to be in that conversation." With this move, AO reports its current membership is 2,945 athletes, 2,026 of whom compete in power conferences. (link, link)

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Pete Ricketts (R-NE) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asking for update on department's progress toward adjusting immigration laws so foreign student-athletes can make money from NIL. From the letter: “While many students have rightfully benefitted from these new opportunities, international college athletes and college athletic programs face a credible risk that even the most basic NIL deal could violate the work restrictions of the F-1 visa. DHS could clarify that the F-1 visa program does not prevent a student from engaging in NIL related activities, securing college athletes’ economic opportunities and easing concerns that students and schools might run afoul of the law. Unfortunately, the tens of thousands of international students competing in NCAA competitions have been deprived of these economic opportunities because of a lack of guidance on, or changes to, the conditions of their student visas by DHS.” The senators note that DHS last year committed to moving quickly on this matter but has issued no update to its rules. “We request a written update on what steps DHS has taken to follow through on your commitment to protect those international college athletes and schools that seek to benefit from the blood, sweat, and tears they put into their sport.” (link)

At the USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships earlier this month, Fisk’s Morgan Price became the first HBCU student-athlete to win a gymnastics national title in the all-around, only to be followed by Talladega student-athlete Kyrstin Johnson winning a national championship on the vault. Brown Girls Do Gymnastics Founder Derrin Moore tells The Washington Post’s Glynn A. Hill: “There are first-year schools that come in and everybody’s happy because gymnastics is growing. But they aren’t winning championships. When you have two teams that come from schools that are under-resourced, they don’t have gyms on the campus, and they have been looked at for so long as schools that can’t handle a gymnastics program, and then you see six national qualifiers from a school in its inaugural year. … It’s not just that they are growing the sport of gymnastics. They’re changing the landscape of the sport of gymnastics.” The growth of the sport at HBCUs will only continue with WIlberforce slated to add Women’s Gymnastics in 2026. (link)

Through the first 100 days of the year, over 130 NAIA job openings hit the market. NAIA.ticker’s NAIA.jobs experienced a 13.3% increase in market share year-over-year with all other mainstream jobs boards losing share compared to the first 100 days of 2023. Private regional colleges with small student bodies and high acceptance rates will face increasingly stiff competition from public institutions amid widespread demographic challenges, according to a new report from Moody’s that indicates these issues will be particularly pronounced in the Midwest and Northeast, where analysts predict higher education enrollment will plummet in the coming years. Small private colleges have increased spending on employee salaries and student wellness services since the start of the pandemic, and analysts note  that “maintaining small class sizes has become more expensive.” From the report: “Exacerbating the race for enrollment are the many strong state institutions that also compete for students in these regions, often with much lower tuition costs than what the private universities can offer.” (link)
