The NCAA and power conferences are in "deep discussions" to settle the House v. NCAA class action lawsuit, per ESPN's Pete Thamel and Dan Murphy, who report: "While sources stressed that no deal is imminent, details about what a multibillion-dollar settlement could look like are expected to be shared with campuses in the near future. There are myriad variables to get to the finish line and still some obstacles and objections at the campus level, but sources indicate that progress has ramped up in recent weeks. A settlement would provide some legal relief for a college sports industry that's been peppered by lawsuits. It could also serve as a keystone piece to formulating a more stable future. With the settlement expected to cost billions in back pay for former athletes, it would likely also require the NCAA and conferences to agree to a system for sharing more revenue with some of the players moving forward." The Leader-Telegram profiles UW-Eau Claire AD Jason Verdugo, including analysis of how his now adult son’s autism diagnosis impacted Verdugo’s performance as a coach and administrator. Verdugo explains that “there was an emptiness and void I had for a long time in that relationship,” in not being able to share his love of sport with his son, that he has been able to redirect to student-athletes under his care. On his transition to administration and if he misses coaching, Verdugo: “While I enjoy the games and the competition, I much rather watch student-athletes practice.” And on his leadership style, Verdugo relates that he believes in consistency, honesty, developing personal relationships and that “nobody has success being tentative.” (link)

Lebanon Valley AD Patrick Ratke talks to LebTown about his vision for the future of Flying Dutchmen athletics, including his ongoing work on a facilities master plan: “We’re currently looking at the football facility. We know we need a new track and field. [...] We know we need other facilities. We know we need additional locker space. But what does that look like? Our weight training room is too small for our number of student-athletes. The question becomes, ‘How can we be fiscally responsible and check off as many boxes as we can while getting student-athletes what they need to be successful on and off the field?’” Ratke also notes that sport additions are not in LVC’s immediate future and that Wrestling, despite growing popularity in the MAC, “would be a challenge without adding additional space.” (link)

The NCAA announces Florida (DI) Deputy AD Lynda Tealer as its new SVP of Championships. Current Interim SVP of Championships Anthony Holman will be promoted from Managing Director of Championships and Alliances, Operations, Playing Rules and Officiating to VP of Championships. Both appointments are effective May 6. (link)

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Pete Ricketts (R-NE) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asking for update on department's progress toward adjusting immigration laws so foreign student-athletes can make money from NIL. From the letter: “While many students have rightfully benefitted from these new opportunities, international college athletes and college athletic programs face a credible risk that even the most basic NIL deal could violate the work restrictions of the F-1 visa. DHS could clarify that the F-1 visa program does not prevent a student from engaging in NIL related activities, securing college athletes’ economic opportunities and easing concerns that students and schools might run afoul of the law. Unfortunately, the tens of thousands of international students competing in NCAA competitions have been deprived of these economic opportunities because of a lack of guidance on, or changes to, the conditions of their student visas by DHS.” The senators note that DHS last year committed to moving quickly on this matter but has issued no update to its rules. “We request a written update on what steps DHS has taken to follow through on your commitment to protect those international college athletes and schools that seek to benefit from the blood, sweat, and tears they put into their sport.” (link)

Penn (DI) professor Karen Weaver, in a piece for Forbes, examines college closures and the impact on DIII athletics. Citing data from Baldwin Wallace College of Education and Health Sciences Dean Steve Dittmore, Weaver relays that, since 2020, “282 teams have been lost, with 200 of them coming from campuses that have closed.” Article includes a list of dropped programs by sport, with 17 sports seeing 10+ programs axed. New York State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer last week sent a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker in which he endorsed a nationwide ban on prop bets on college athletes. O’Dwyer: “With the commencement of legal sports wagering in our state, the New York State Gaming Commission made a policy determination to prohibit individual athletic-based proposition betting within any collegiate event, as we shared the same desire to insulate student-athletes from potential harassment regarding their performance. We are pleased that many states have followed our lead and have since adopted such a similar restriction. As regulators of the largest sports betting market in the United States, we continue to believe the prohibition of college proposition betting on student-athletes is appropriate. New York State appreciates your efforts to help implement this important protective measure nationwide.” (link)
