Georgia AD Josh Brooks & Football HC Kirby Smart have inked contract extensions. For Brooks it’s an added year, which could now keep him in Athens through 2030. Terms, per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson: “Annual salary of $1,275,000, increasing by $100,000 each year of the agreement. There are bonuses of up to $200,000 for top-20 finishes in the (LEARFIELD) Directors’ Cup standings and overall academic performance. His contract, which was amended last year, called for him to earn $1.25 million this past year with a $100,000 raise during the next five years of the deal. That put him around the average to lower end of SEC athletic directors.” As for Smart: “Smart received a two-year extension through Dec. 2033 and a $1.75 million raise. He will make $13 million per year, with bonuses up to $1.55 million.” (link)

The lawsuit filed against Florida A&M by former Rattlers AD/current Tulane Deputy AD for Operations & Capital Projects Kortne Gosha has been dismissed by U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle. Hinkle: “The record includes no evidence that gender, disability or whistleblowing had anything to do with (Gosha’s resignation). Instead, the record establishes, again beyond genuine dispute, that Dr. Robinson made the decision for three legitimate, non-discriminatory, non-retaliatory reasons, any one of which would be sufficient standing alone to defeat Mr. Gosha’s claims.” More from HBCU Gameday. The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker has the latest tension from the ACC as Clemson has amended its lawsuit against the league to include “punitive damages to Clemson for the ACC’s willful and malicious conduct, including ‘slander of title.’” More: “Clemson took (the grant of rights disagreement) to another level in its updated complaint. The school said the conference knew its claims were false or acted with reckless disregard to their truth. The effect of that ‘malintent,’ the suit said, was ‘to harm Clemson and deter its exit from the Conference by, among other means, seeking to diminish the value of Clemson’s intangible property.’ [...] Clemson also asked the South Carolina court to weigh in on its sovereign immunity and whether the public school can be sued in another state.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair talks to The Blade about the future of college football and the Rockets’ place in the landscape: “For every fan we have that is excited about us winning a MAC championship, there's another fan that still talks to me about when we beat Michigan or when we beat Pitt at home when they were in the top 10. Those opportunities to match up against the best in the country matter. You can't ignore that hope. [...] I'm all about sensible options that make sense for the long term and maybe a new model pops up. …The whole NCAA basketball tournament is built off that model. …It's that one opportunity, the off chance that David topples Goliath, and how that captivates an entire country. That’s special, and to ignore that and say, ‘Well, we'll just do Goliath vs. Goliath because TV wants it that way?’ That’s a travesty if we continue going down that path.” For his part Bowling Green AD Derek van der Merwe throws cold water on the idea of a G5 playoff: “A separate playoff … creates a heavier burden as you enter into a larger playoff, which doesn't make sense. It's not like it's basketball. This is football. … You can't just arbitrarily increase the number of games and not have significant consequences.” (link)

State Rep. David Willis (R-NC), an Appalachian State alumnus, has sponsored a UNC Intrastate Athletic Competition bill that would “require eligible constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina to regularly compete against one another in football and basketball.” Triangle Media’s Joe Ovies surmises that Willis believes the “ACC's expansion is screwing scheduling of games like App vs. (NC) State or UNC.” The bill would require each high-enrollment school to play one game each year vs another high-enrollment school and one vs a non-high-enrollment school, as well as play each non-high-enrollment institution once home and one away every six years. The Athletic’s Max Olson tracked how the 53 football student-athletes who left Colorado upon HC Deion Sanders’ arrival last year have fared and notes that “15 matriculated to Power 5 programs, 22 ended up on Group of 5 rosters, 11 went FCS or Division II, and two attended junior colleges. Three ex-Buffs went unsigned out of the portal and haven’t played since. And several had to fight the NCAA for the opportunity to keep playing.” Former Buff WR Chase Sowell, who landed at ECU, tells Olson: “We knew it was going to happen, but we didn’t know it was going to happen that soon. … He didn’t sugarcoat it. He was telling me, ‘You’re coming off injury. I don’t think you will be one of the guys we need to start this year. We need guys that are going to be ready to play now.’” While some players were “enraged or in tears,” Sowell says: “I don’t think he was being a d— about it. I think he was just being straight up: Prove to me that you can play.” Once spring practice started, Sowell says: “We felt like it was us vs. them instead of all of us together. That’s the best way I can put it. The new guys were going against the players that had already been there. It wasn’t a good environment to be in. It wasn’t a team environment.” Offensive lineman Jake Wiley was not among those who were eventually cut from the team but describes a text he received on “cut day,” telling Olson: “In our O-line group chat, one of the offensive line coaches texted the group and said, ‘Good luck fellas.’ And then he just removed all of them. It said these five people were removed from the chat. We were like, ‘Huh? What happened?’” Two days after those players entered the portal, Wiley joined them and says even players who survived the cut felt unwanted and expendable. Lots more. (link)

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee has proposed “expanding video replay review to include whether a player's foot last touching the court was inbounds on a made shot before time expired. If the player's foot is determined to be out of bounds, officials would put the exact time of the violation on the game clock. However, if the shot is made and time remains on the game clock, a video review would not occur.” The committee also recommended a one-game suspension be added as a result of player, coach or bench ejections that include physical contact or the threatening of referees and forwarded an experimental rule for NIT Board approval allowing a coach during the 2025 NIT to appeal out-of-bounds calls for video replay review in the last two minutes of games. All rules proposals will be reviewed by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on June 6. (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon with some key updates from the American Hockey Coaches Associations meetings via his super informative subscription newsletter: “As for the regional format, there was no consensus among the coaches, and the talks about changing to on-campus regionals didn’t go very far, I’m told. Everything discussed was in different stages of a stalemate, it sounds like. The same goes for the potential eligibility of CHL players. No changes are expected to come out of these meetings. However, as I’ve pointed out in the past, the coaches could be forced into this change if a lawsuit is ever brought against the NCAA.” McMahon also reports Atlantic Hockey has tabled expansion conversations with Long Island & Stonehill mentioned as programs involved. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark acknowledges he’d like to see the College Football Playoff expand to 14 teams but wants to see the 12-team format play out for 2024. “My feeling is more access for student athletes is a great thing. Providing them with championship experiences is a wonderful thing. ... Hosting games on-campus is fantastic for all the right reasons. And if we ended up going to 14, and we can further enhance the championship experience for more teams and more student athletes, I think that's great.” Regarding the CFP’s financial distribution, Yormark tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “I'm a believer that if you create value, you need to be rewarded. That's just how I look at life. When you look at the first 10 years of the CFP, we didn't perform as well as we would have liked. That's OK. History might not repeat itself, and that's why we have the look-in [provision]. I made a point to get that in. ... For a lot of different reasons. I certainly wasn't happy with the distribution. I guess you could say in some respects, I was satisfied. It was fine, but certainly not happy about it.” On expanding March Madness, Yormark says: “The tournament is one of the greatest spectacles in sports…and you don't want to mess with something that's great. But if there's chances and opportunities to modify it a little bit, to make it provide more access, to amplify the experience, to look at it slightly differently, we owe it to ourselves to do that.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White was asked about where ADs stand on sharing revenue with student-athletes and whether the Big Ten and SEC are leading the way on the issue. White: "I think I figured I may get that question. I was thinking about that on the way here today. I liken it to, if I had a crack in my foundation at my house, I think it's unfortunate over the last couple decades just watching this thing play out. We've several times tried to put some spackle on the crack and maybe hope somebody else solves it in the future. We've got to stop doing that. And I hope that we really take a deep look and solve this thing with some real, structural issues. We obviously have some legal issues in college sports. There are real solutions, and we need to sprint to them as quickly as possible.” White also said the SEC is getting close to making long-term scheduling decisions for football, but “to be perfectly honest with you, we've got so many other bigger issues, I hadn't really thought about that one most recently. I know our fans would love to know. I'm excited in any iteration of this new football conference. Adding two (schools) is one thing, and they're two big-time brands. But just playing everyone more frequently by getting rid of the divisions and having much more diversity in the schedule.” More from White. (link)

Indiana AD Scott Dolson joins the Hoosier Hysterics podcast and talks about expectations for Football HC Curt Cignetti’s first season. Dolson says IU wants to put itself on the map in the new Big Ten, and “beyond that it's about how we play, it’s about our swagger, it's about the things that really, really good programs do. I want to see that, I want to feel it, and it's one of those things that sometimes in my position being behind the scenes you get a feel for things and sometimes the feel is different than what fans see. Sometimes it’s the same thing. And what I want is behind the scenes I want to feel that we're gaining that confidence.” Also from Dolson: “How can I lead this department to make sure that we stay relevant? We don't want to be on the outside looking in – and I think we're fine for now, I don't want to alarm anyone that we're on the cusp of being put out – but I think having a strong football program, a commitment to football is vital to being relevant in the Big Ten. And you can see that with the hiring of Coach Cig, with the investments as we studied other schools, the Investments in staff, the investments in facilities, the investment to make sure we put ourselves in the position to have success.” More from Dolson, including his expectations for men’s hoops. From Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Bowl Season director Nick Carparelli told @YahooSports in Phoenix that he expects NIL to soon come ‘in-house’ and for athletes to sign binding compensation contracts with schools that will require them to play in bowls and CFP games, eliminating or greatly reducing opt-outs.” (link)

More from Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “AFCA Board voted to propose changes to the recruiting calendar this week in Phoenix. Memphis Interim AD Jeff Crane says the Tigers have crossed the $20M fundraising threshold as they seeks to raise $50M to support renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Once the department reaches the $25M milestone, work on Phase 2 will begin as soon as possible. "We anticipate to raise the rest (of the $25M) by the end of this summer. We are still on track for completion of Phase 2 by the summer of 2026.” Crane also asserts the mission remains to get into a Power 4 conference. “We think more change is coming. It’s hard to predict what may come, but our goal has been and will continue to be to remain aggressive. We know with the work we’re doing, we’re putting the university in the best possible position.” Crane acknowledges he would like to have the job on a permanent basis, but “we have so much in front of us at the moment, I don’t want to get distracted by that. We’re in a time of change in college athletics and I want to keep our eye on the opportunities in front of us.” (link)

Virginia Tech finished FY23 with $129.5M in revenue and $116.9M in expenses for a surplus of $12.6M. YoY, the Hokies’ revenue increased 14.9%, up from $112.7M, while expenses remained essentially flat, falling .3% from $117.3M. Some notable line items via the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel: total media rights, the vast majority of which come from the ACC’s contracts with ESPN, rose from $32M to $41.9M; the largest subset of media rights ($31.5M) was from football, up from $22.3M; ticket sales increased from $13.5M to $18.6M with football accounting for $15M, up from $10.1M; total football revenue increased 41.4% from $48.8M to $69M and accounted for 53.3% of all revenue; and women’s basketball revenue jumped 73.5% from $865K to $1.5M. OnBalance Founder/CEO Walt Norley joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the value of using data to address student-athlete mental health concerns. Norley explains how his company is working with Miami (FL) to develop its Gen3 platform for measuring, managing and improving student-athlete mental health. Norley on the importance of data: “Foundationally, today we have a scoring program that will allow stronger communication between the stakeholders. The second piece is we bring everything into one place. We want to create management communications efficiencies so people can have their electronic library with NCAA, conference information, team policies, etc. … The foundation the company is putting business intelligence in through technology, which today is AI, that drives to trends and then predictions to improve the outcomes. And the outcomes really that we're driving to it's getting the athletes back in competition sooner. And in the case where they're not in the classroom because they're going through these mental behavioral challenges, we get them back in the classroom sooner and that's the overall objective.” Full interview on Connect.
