Welcome, Mr. President:

+ Freshly minted NCAA President Baker tells The Athletic’s Auerbach he has two main goals during his first 100 days: meet virtually with every conference in every division and conduct a SWOT analysis to inform his strategy. “I have gotten very comfortable with this whole notion that 90% of college athletic programs are investments made by schools to support their infrastructure and their student body and all the rest, and it isn’t really a money-making activity. … One of the things I would like to figure out how to do in this job is to recognize and understand what’s going on with the revenue-positive folks, but at the same time not do something that’s going to put the rest of DI, DII and DIII in a position where they can’t continue to provide what I think most people believe is a tremendously valuable element of that collegiate experience.” (link)

+ On NIL, Baker says the most consistent theme he’s heard from stakeholders is the lack of transparency around the topic. “There needs to be some sort of protective skin put around this stuff either congressionally, which obviously comes with all 50 states — ‘here are the rules and the standards associated with that’ — or something that’s done by us. One way or another, we’ve got to address it.” (link)

+ Regarding whether student-athletes should be paid, Baker says the discussion is part of the larger discourse about how college sports is changing. “I've actually had a lot of student-athletes tell me they would rather be student-athletes than be employees for a whole bunch of reasons. I think that will be, in fact, a big part of the dialogue going forward. But from my point of view, the goal here should be to figure out how to deal with this issue in a way that actually addresses some of the concerns people have about the very successful and financially successful programs, recognizing that there are literally hundreds of thousands of student-athletes who don't play in those programs and for whom the idea of being an employee is really not an attractive one. And I think people need to keep that in mind.” Pressed on when the NCAA should give up on the prospect of Congressional action, Baker replied: “You want a date? I mean, that's a hard question to answer. … I think your question about when is enough is a good one. But I can't answer that today.” (link)

+ Baker tells ESPN it’s important to “make sure we control, to the extent that we can, our own destiny on this stuff, to recognize and understand that means that we need to make some decisions and move a little more quickly than maybe we have in the past." In doing so, Baker hopes the NCAA can avoid the "all or nothing" options for revamping the rules governing all three divisions. “It's [5,000] to 10,000 athletes at the Power 5 schools, and then it's all the rest of college sports. I don't think we can treat them both the same. My hope is we can figure out some way to bridge those two universes in a way that makes them both better instead of ending up in a situation where the whole thing comes tumbling down." (link)

Outgoing NCAA President Emmert sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Fischer to discuss his tenure, his decision to walk away now, the changing landscape, his advice to Governor Baker and lots more. The potential for student-athletes being classified as employees is “absolutely the biggest issue” facing college sports right now, Emmert explains: “People need to look beyond just the top 50 football teams and the 100 basketball teams. They need to look at what does that mean for half a million young men and women. What does that mean for 1,100 schools and what does that mean for 22 other sports other than football and men’s basketball, and I think that’s where people miss the big picture in all of this… and I think that is an area where Congress will have to weigh in because you’ve got some states that are weighing in right now, and you’re going to wind up with that same crazy quilt of some states doing this, some states doing that.” Emmert observes it’s a particularly daunting task in the current political climate to get Congress to agree on anything complicated but notes incoming President Baker’s political connections and experience should help in that regard. “It is utterly essential that we have some national legislation passed that creates a landscape – just an ecosystem – that college sports can operate in. You get critics out there [saying], ‘Well, the NCAA is just begging for Congress to solve its problems.’ That’s not true at all. But the legal environment right now won’t allow the NCAA to solve those problems without some change in that environment. It can’t run college sports with 30 or 40 different state rules around NIL or pay-for-play or anything else, and that’s where it’s heading right now.” Lots more in a comprehensive exit interview. Hoopsville’s McHugh caught up with the MBB and WBB selection committee chairs after the NCAA Tournament bracket releases earlier this week. Dubuque Assoc. Dean of Student Engagement and Athletics/WBB Committee Chair Wilson noted the prep work the WBB committee did ahead of Sunday allowed them the ability to be more creative in putting together a national tournament with more geographic diversity. The most challenging part of the process was selecting the final five teams, adding: “It's just really hard with Sunday championship games. […] They're allowed, they're accepted, but it does make the work of the committee a little more challenging. […] I would just prefer them to not be on Sunday at all.” Asked about feedback on this bracket, Wilson: “It’s not a perfect system. I don’t think our criteria is set up very well to compare teams nationally, across regions. I think it’s very regional and I’m not sure it’s the best criteria anyway.” She would love to add PairWise rankings, which are used for Ice Hockey, as “there is no guesswork.” Continuing: “The [DIII Championships] Committee has said that they’re going to run some other sports and tournaments to be able to get feedback from committees. I don’t think it’s anything that’s soon, but it’s worth investigating.” Maryville AD/MBB Committee chair Quatrocky adds to the PairWise possibility: “I think the champs committee is going to choose PairWise regardless of what we think or not. … If they go to PairWise we’re going to have issues too because now we’re going to say the computers got it wrong and then they’re going to want the humans to step in and make a decision. … I think it would be better if we could just have more teams or a bigger bracket.” (link)

The SCIAC FB AQ bid will go to the winner of the league’s newly established Football Championship between the top team from each of the Sun and Surf divisions. Deets from the release: “The league's six teams will be grouped into two pods of three, organized on a two-year cycle. Teams will play opponents in their pod twice and teams in the other pod once for a total of seven games that count toward the conference standings. Games will take place from Weeks 4-10, with the teams holding the best record in each pod playing for the championship at the site of the team with the best record (the head-to-head winner will host in the case of a tie). The second-and third-place teams in each pod will also face each other in third- and fifth-place games that will alternate home sites by pod each year. ” (link)

Online ticketing platform AudienceView is currently down due to technical difficulties after a nation-wide data breach reported by the company last week that includes payment information for individuals who have used the platform since early February. (link); Per Northern Michigan (DII), the “system is not expected to be able to resume normal operations for 5-7 days,” and will therefore impact events this weekend. (link, link); Virginia Tech (DI) police are reportedly investigating a potential instance of credit card fraud that may have occurred on the AudienceView Campus platform. Hokies Director of News and Information Owczarski: “A number of our students made Virginia Tech Police aware that their credit cards had been hacked into and there were charges against their credit cards that were not their own.” The school is currently working with students and AudienceView to resolve the issue.
