UMass Lowell Chancellor Julie Chen joins Connect/Collegiate Sports Associate’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss what she is looking for in a new athletic director. Chen on the non-negotiables the next leader must have: “For an athletic director, teamwork is a big part of it. As part of a team, sometimes you’re the leader and sometimes you’re making the assist. I’m looking for someone that wants to be part of this great team we have here. They have to be a great communicator, a great listener and of strong moral character.” Chen also points out that understanding the importance of student-athletes is paramount, as is being able to articulate the pros and cons of budget decisions. More, including the top priorities of the first 100 days for the new hire. Collegiate Sports Associates is assisting with the process. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams has the details on Florida State’s intention to raise $326.6M from revenue bonds, which could be issued as early as next week by the Sunshine State. The haul is earmarked to cover construction costs of renovations at Doak Campbell Stadium, plus the Seminoles’ new football operations facility. Key details: “The $326.6 million is broken into two series—a $291.6 million Series 2024A and a $35 million taxable Series 2024B—and would join roughly $111 million in other athletics bonds, also tied to Seminoles revenue, with payments that are still outstanding. [...] The schedule of estimated debt service on the new issuing says the annual payments of principal and interest will start at $18.5 million in 2025, before jumping up to $26 million in 2027. It will be roughly $21.1 million per year from 2030-2044, and roughly $13.1 million per year from 2045 to 2054, when the entire sum ($562 million) is scheduled to be paid off. Fitch has assigned an ‘AA-’ rating to the debt.” (link - article, link - full offering statement)

Florida A&M has received a $237M donation from the Issac Batterson 7th Family Trust and CEO Gregory Gerami. It is the largest donation in school history, nearly doubles FAMU’s existing endowment and “appears to be the largest donation in HBCU history,” according to the Tallahassee Democrat’s Tarah Jean. Approximately $100M will go toward Rattlers athletics and will be used for initiatives including student-athlete endowment funds and a $24M Galimore-Powell Athletic Fieldhouse project, which will expand the space to have club-level suites for corporate partnership meetings. FAMU AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes: “This is really a monument when you think about the impact it will have on FAMU Athletics.” (link)

Wichita State announces that former Baseball HC Gene Stephenson has a $600K planned gift in store for the Shockers, which will be restricted to future support of the baseball program. In addition to the planned gift, Stephenson has committed $20K annually to the Wheat Shock Collective to be used specifically for baseball student-athletes. (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon goes deeper on potential changes to CHL players ending up in the collegiate ranks after discussion at the American Hockey Coaches Association meetings in Naples. Currently, there’s not enough support for a rule change, however, a committee was formed to further explore the issue “that consists of all six conference commissioners, AHCA executive director Forrest Karr (Minnesota-Duluth AD), and one coach from each conference.” McMahon: “The fact remains that despite coaches being largely against changing the bylaw, they could be forced into it through litigation in the courts. While there is no current legal challenge to the rule in the court system, it seems increasingly likely that a player (or group of players) will challenge this rule at some point, especially given the other legal challenges the NCAA is facing. It’s also important to remember that a legal challenge likely won’t just change things for CHL players. It will open up the NCAA to pro players in general, including players who signed pro contracts in Europe. The NHL is even preparing for this change. Earlier this year, at the general manager meetings in Florida, teams were briefed on the possibility of the change, and the league will have to renegotiate its CBA with the NHLPA and re-work the NHL/CHL agreement.“ More. CBS’ Dennis Dodd breaks down what Alabama-to-Iowa-to-Alabama football student-athlete Kadyn Proctor’s two transfers this offseason portends for the sport and asks: “Given the current climate, are we one court action away from players being able to just change teams in mid-semester?” Arkansas assistant professor Joshua Lens believes that “such a lawsuit is definitely a modern-day possibility.” Dodd notes that it's sometimes possible for non-athlete students to switch schools in the same semester, and “that's what these lawsuits have become about: Is the same benefit available to the average student? Such moves might be even easier in the quarter system as opposed to semesters, which is more of a West Coast phenomenon mattering at places like Oregon, Washington, USC and Stanford.” Proctor acknowledges that after a rough start to his freshman season, he initially felt defeated, but “it kind of just clicked after the first 3-4 games when I really wasn't having fun, letting up sacks. I was like, 'I can't do this anymore. I don't want to do this anymore. I want to provide for my team.'” While some have maligned Proctor for entering the portal twice in 90 days, Dodd points out it “allowed him to not only clear his mind but change it as well.” Proctor’s high school OL coach Jon Cochran says he’s not sure how things would’ve shaken out for Proctor without the portal: “The perspective I was able to give him when he first got down to Alabama is that leaving the state of Iowa [was] quite a ways from home. Stanford was 1,800 miles away from where I went to high school. It wasn't easy. There was a creeping thought in my mind, 'Was I too far?'” More. (link)

LSU women's gymnastics student-athlete Livvy Dunne has signed a multimillion-dollar NIL deal with Passes, a content creation and monetization platform. According to Sportico’s Dylan Manfre, creators must have at least 100K followers to join the platform. “The company’s main revenue stream comes from its creator fee, which takes 10% plus 30 cents from creators on every purchase someone makes—a $100 transaction yields $10.30 to the company. Creators can opt into a separate tier where Passes charges a flat 20% fee, leaving the creator with 80% of the revenue.” Passes Founder Lucy Guo says Passes’ main competition is Patreon, which offers three tiers of creator memberships where Patreon would take between 5% and 12% of the income. Guo also notes Dunne will not be the only student-athlete to sign an NIL deal with the company and, per Manfre, “teased one partnership with a university collective (she declined to say which) where it would sign their top athletes.” Guo: “Merchandise would be really interesting, and (fan) experiences. We’re actually working with this university collective on offering fan experiences, selling tickets, etc., which we can all do via the platform.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: How does a coach know when to remove someone from the team?
Leanne Ulmer, Head Volleyball Coach at Carthage College, talks about her experiences leading the team for almost 25 years. She discusses working through athletics director changes, leading the team without a full-time assistant coach, deciding when to remove someone from the team, and celebrating other sports on campus while mentoring young coaches throughout the department.
• "If you don't wither and die, you'll learn from the experience."
• Anticipating which student-athletes will be leaders
• Being enrollment driven is a lot to manage with a small staff
• Being intentional with developing relationships with other coaches in the department
Coach Ulmer also talks a lot about her son, University of Oregon Volleyball Coach Matt Ulmer, and the personal and professional relationship they have as volleyball coaches. Listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Oregon AD Rob Mullens caught up with The Bald Face Truth’s John Canzano to discuss key marketplace topics. On directly compensating student-athletes: “I support the continuum that we’ve been on which started with cost of attendance, unlimited meals, an ability to take advantage of your name, image likeness. Pay-for-play is not the way I think it needs to go. When you look across our 450 student-athletes, that model doesn’t fit the entire system. I think using pay-for-play as employment is one step too far.” On the question of NIL’s impact on corruption: “I think where it’s headed is gonna lessen it. What’s hard to measure is in the transition, is everyone following the letter of the law? Probably not … as we work through this system there are certain things you can enforce and can’t enforce. Where we’re gonna be in the fall, it provides clarity on what the guardrails are.” (link)

Houston AD Chris Pezman does the same with the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte, starts by noting that construction on the west side of TDECU Stadium “is in a really good place” with full completion “ready for fall 2025. The video board (which at 160 feet in width will be the largest in the Big 12) will be up and working during the football season. Construction will continue but the main concourse (in the west end zone) will still be operational on game day. The end zone in that back parking lot is obviously gone, but we accounted for making sure the building is fully operational for game day in the fall.” Latest NIL thoughts: “One of the things that NIL has been interesting for us where we have a unique advantage and we are capitalizing on, most of our NIL money is corporate money. When you go look at other schools in our league or adjacent conferences, almost all their NIL is donor funded. Where we have a chance is we have Mattress Mack or John Daspit, very important businesses like that, or Jamal Shead getting a deal with Exxon Mobil. You can’t do that at other places.” That said, Pezman points to “money” as the Cougars’ biggest challenge: “If you look at UCF and Cincinnati, we are about $10 million behind them on self-generated revenues. There’s not any reason for it. We could make excuses all day long, but until we meet or exceed that we’re failing and that’s on me.” More. (link)

SEC ADs note the challenges of non-conference football scheduling as the conference has yet to decide how many league games it will play in 2026 & beyond, plus there’s the unknowns of more potential conference realignment & how access decisions will sort out for the new College Football Playoff. Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek: “Fans, more and more, want to see these marquee games, especially in your stadium. And the way you get these marquee games is home-and-home series. And you want to set yourself up to potentially get in the 12-team Playoff. Whether that gravitates to 14 teams, you want to put your program in the best position possible for that to happen. Time will tell what that looks like, what your schedule has to look like. We have very little data … until we go into those 12-team playoffs going forward.” Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “(What) if a team has had a great season and played the toughest schedule in the season and has marquee wins but ends up with a 9-3 record? You know, three losses, but they also have good wins to balance it out, versus another team that ends up 11-1. How is that going to be discussed? [...] As a college football fan, I want to see more great matchups. The more the better. But we also have to be wise to think about how it impacts the ability to play as far into the postseason as possible.” (link)

New Florida Gulf Coast AD Colin Hargis’ take on NIL: “When it’s done the right way, I’m a huge advocate for it. The way I view the NIL you know our student athletes have the opportunity to be their own LLC. We can enable and empower our 18-22 year old student athletes to truly understand branding and marketing and what it means to position yourself from a business practice while they’re in college. … It definitely is a focus. It has to be a focus. It’s becoming more and more a part of our daily operations as an athletics department and as a university. So that’ll be a key priority for myself as well as our staff and department is to truly understand how can we maximize NIL here.” Just a few days into his new role, Hargis sees the blueprint to winning is in place, “there’s the ability,” but “moving forward it’s just a different age of college athletics and it’s understanding the transfer portal. And understanding you may not have a student athlete for four years anymore.” Hargis says “we’re proud members of the ASUN” and that focusing on the existing sports portfolio is his priority, not adding football. More from his sit down with WINK. (link)

Bowl Season boss Nick Carparelli believes the future includes more bowl games, not less, and goes on to suggest pay-for–play relationships between schools & student-athletes could solve the postseason opt-out challenge: “If you have a job, you're being paid to do it. If you don't do your job, you don't get paid. I don't see how anybody can argue that. I think once we get under a standardized system like that, that makes sense, I think it's gonna solve a lot of problems. You're gonna see student-athletes wanting to participate in bowl games in order to avoid a reduction in payment.” Carparelli also commented on the potential for a separate Group of 5 Playoff: “I don't sense any desire for that concept whatsoever.” (link)

As Arizona administrators and coaches kick off a seven-stop tour around the state, AD Desireé Reed-Francois explains why she brought the practice with her from Missouri: “We ask a lot of our fans. We ask them to come to our games. We ask them to join our scholarship fund and donate. So we want to be able to go to them and say `Thank you.' That's what this caravan is about.” Recalling last December’s game in Phoenix, Men’s Basketball HC Tommy Lloyd tells fans: “We love going to Phoenix and engaging with you guys. This Phoenix market is so important to our program. We want you guys to make sure you feel connected to what we're doing.” Director of Broadcasting & Voice of the Wildcats Brian Jeffries concurs: “I think it's great for the people that don't get to come to Tucson on a regular basis. [...] People know who the coaches are, and they see them in interviews. But the fact that they might be able to shake their hand, you can't put a price on that.” (link)

The Heisman Trust’s decision to return USC RB Reggie Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy has sparked debate over whether the NCAA should rescind its five-game suspension of former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor and restore his school’s 12 wins from the 2010 season, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who argues Pryor has a better argument for the NCAA to act. “Pryor’s actions (receiving free tattoos) were only transgressions because the NCAA prohibited players from using a legal right they already had, the right of publicity. Although that right varies by state, it mainly forbids the commercial use of another person’s identity without their consent. The right of publicity empowers pro athletes to sign endorsement deals. It also plays a crucial role in the entertainment industry for actors, musicians and other professionals whose fame creates income opportunities.” The NCAA, however, could argue the players were guilty of violating the rules as they existed at the time. It might also worry “about opening Pandora’s Box and getting deluged with requests to rewrite historical records and reassign awards, championships and statistical achievements,” and McCann concludes: “Pryor has a point that he was punished for using a right he already had as an American. It’s just not a point likely to sway the NCAA.” (link)

Aramark Sports + Entertainment is launching “Immerse,” a newly created consultancy division. Like Aura, the company’s recent creation for premium experiences, Immerse “packages capabilities it already had into a service offering,” per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who adds: “Immerse’s capabilities will include research, data insights, and full-scale master planning projects, collaborating with clients to tie together data, trends, goals, and opportunities to create customized plans that lift in-venue F&B quality and performance.” Aramark Sports + Entertainment's Design and Development VP of Marketing Jamie Slotterback: “The trigger for this was not only when our clients came to us asking for this, but when outside partners and vendors started tapping us. We really wanted to start with where we are experts, really in our wheelhouse, really specializing in F&B and hospitality, not trying to reach into other parts of sports and entertainment." Immerse will be available as a service to anyone interested, not just current F&B clients. (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Douglas Belkin profiles the class of graduating college students who began their college careers in isolation due to COVID and are now exiting amid a flurry of mass protests across the country. “College students today are lonelier, less resilient and more disengaged than their predecessors, research shows. The university communities they populate are socially fragmented, diminished and less vibrant. The pandemic bruised the psyche of a generation. The politics seared it.” Columbia junior Eden Yadegar says isolation amplified protests on campus and provided lonely students with a welcoming community inside demonstrations and the encampment on the quad. The divisions, however, remain bitter. Yadegar, who leads an organization supporting Israel, says she walked into a social club in which she had been a member for years, and members “would physically turn away from me. I have lost the majority of my non-Jewish friends over this.” According to Belkin, researchers have found the “isolation and disruption caused by the pandemic, along with the increased reliance on technology that it fostered, has fundamentally changed college life, leaving students less likely to build ties and find communities. SUNY Purchase professor Gari Laguardia, who has taught at the university for 40 years: “How can I put this, it’s duller than before Covid. The kids are less independent than they used to be. They seem to not be able to exercise much agency.” Lots more. (link)
