Chadwick on the latter: “We talked about the student-athletes, we've talked about the staff, but the group that sometimes gets overlooked in the traditional sense of the area that we're talking about is the fan. It’s the person that's paying usually hard-earned money to be able to come and cheer on their team and we have developed products recently that are being used globally now for easy texting, easy messaging, easy email etc. We had several of our partner schools ask us why couldn't this be replicated in a similar way with the attendees that are coming to our events because we want to be able to prioritize their experiences. We might not know who they are per se to be able to upload them in the system like we are with their student-athletes, but if they have a concern, if they have a question, if they have general feedback, if there's something really serious going on – and there's a scale [from, for instance] there's no toilet paper in the bathroom to, ‘Hey, I'm a fan at this game and someone nearby me is yelling obscenities to the opposing team.’ A lot of the very large Power 5 football teams have had a reporting line or texting line in place, but sometimes the issues are happening in the smaller environment.” Full Q&A on Connect. The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Dan Bauman wonders if more colleges will “dig deeper” into their endowments amid financial challenges. “The Chronicle identified at least nine institutions that, like Webster (DIII), have withdrawn larger-than-typical sums of money from their endowments to stay in compliance with bondholders, cover operations, or even finance capital projects. Many of these institutions found themselves in tough financial straits for similar reasons, like dwindling enrollment and shrinking net-tuition revenue. Others were beset by more-distinct circumstances. But the representatives of nearly all of the colleges The Chronicle spoke with said they think that more institutions will join their ranks, as more and more small, less well-endowed institutions reject long-held truisms about endowment management — that any withdrawals of funds beyond the industry’s preferred annual spending rate of 5 percent are to be categorically avoided — in favor of spending policies that are responsive to higher ed’s now much more competitive marketplace.” Other institutions referenced in the article include St. Joseph’s Brooklyn (DIII), Hartford (DIII), Wittenberg (DIII), Columbia College (NAIA), La Salle (DI), Guilford (DIII), Manchester (DIII) and Clarkson (DIII). A new report by TimelyCare and Active Minds called “Loneliness, Resilience and Mental Health: A Call for Campus Action,” indicates that loneliness is strongly associated with negative mental health among college students. The results are based on survey responses from roughly 1,000 students between the ages of 18-26 who are enrolled in a 2- or 4-year college/university. Students who say they are lonely are 4x more likely to report severe psychological distress. The rate of non-straight college students who reported feeling lonely (70.3%) was nearly 10 points higher than their straight peers (60.6%). Additionally, 63% of respondents said they prioritize having good mental health and 54% say they prioritize taking care of their mental health. Of the African American respondents, 78.8% said they prioritize having good mental health. (link)
