President Amy Parsons: “I've worked closely with John during his time as interim AD and am confident that he has the vision, experience and skills necessary to lead Ram Athletics into the future. This Old House…
+ USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken has approved a “stay of all action in the House case ‘pending the Court’s ruling on Plaintiffs’ motion to preliminarily approve the settlement between Plaintiffs and Defendant.’” (link); Berkowitz adds that Judge Wilken has approved a stay in the Hubbard case as well and notes that per court filings “Parties ‘anticipate’ settlement motion will be filed within 30 days from today, ‘but in any event no later than’ 45 days from today. Settlement is to cover House, Hubbard and Carter cases.” (link, link)
+ Alabama AD Greg Byrne continues to say cutting sport programs will be a last resort for the Crimson Tide: “You’ve seen Loyola Marymount, you’ve seen a couple of other schools since COVID who had reduced sports but obviously that would be the last thing we want to do. [...] One of the things that frustrated me from reading the things I read so far was when I read about certain figures out there comparing what we do to professional leagues. They never talk about how professional leagues have one team. We have 21. It never gets mentioned.” However, Byrne also notes: “We all have a responsibility, as much as people think there’s unlimited money, there’s not. We have to make financial decisions.” (link)
+ Villanova AD Mark Jackson echoes Byrne: “The idea of the elimination of sports has not come up. It’s not a concern of ours right now. Where college athletics goes and the idea of sports that generate revenue and those that don’t is the bigger question and how everybody looks at the distribution of revenues and how they may impact sports — those are real questions. [...] We’re looking at every possible scenario and modeling out multiple platforms and how we’re going to navigate this. We want to be prepared for whatever happens next.” (link)
+ Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “Even some of the ideas that we've thrown out on the table which would be innovative and seem to be a legally-supported way going forward, we found, eh, better re-think that one. This is all plowing new ground. We're cautious about trying to paint everything with what we know now and just be patient enough to build it the way it should be in the long run.” (link)
+ Ole Miss AD Keith Carter: “It’s going to be a hodgepodge of finding new revenues and eliminating some expenses. It’s going to be definitely different at each institution and how they do it.” (link)
+ Saint Joseph's AD Jill Bodensteiner: “It requires immediate planning on where that lost revenue or other payments that we’re going to have to contribute to the settlement will come from. I am not an expert on the numbers, but am I disappointed and angry at the funding for that back pay? Yes. I think it unfairly hurts schools like those in the Atlantic 10 and similar conferences. It’s really disproportionately hurting schools that don’t sponsor football because we’re funding football and I think it’s unfair. Patently unfair. [...] I’m seeing other commenters say there’s no way people will carry beyond the minimum [number of sports] required for Division I [16 sports for FBS, 14 for others]. People will look to go down to the minimum. We haven’t had those conversations at St. Joe’s yet.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ The NCAA has reached a settlement with the Justice Department that will effectively allow for unlimited student-athlete transferring without penalty. (link); The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel adds: “Interesting part of the settlement. Athletes who had to sit out a year under the old transfer rules and are still in college will get that year of eligibility restored and could come back next year.” (link)
+ The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker stays on top of the ACC-Florida State proceedings & here is the latest key development: “The three power conferences have joined with the Atlantic Coast Conference in urging a Tallahassee court to protect the ACC’s TV deals with ESPN. [...] The ACC, SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 argued in Leon County Circuit Court records that the documents must remain confidential to protect trade secrets.” More: “ESPN went even farther in its brief. The network said releasing its contracts would allow competitors to ‘gain a leg up on ESPN in the next round of negotiations with rightsholders.’ Florida would be harmed, its filing said, because ESPN and other networks might balk at doing business with state schools if their contracts could become public.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports “the NCAA's motion to dismiss Reggie Bush's defamation case was denied in an Indiana court yesterday.” (link)

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel is expected to discuss legislative changes next month that would allow on-field sponsorships for football, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes this, along with a potential ninth SEC conference game, are opportunities to generate new revenue to offset what will be shared with student-athletes. Dellenger also believes there is the possibility of eventually allowing sponsor logos on jerseys, writing: “field logos on the 25-yard line are expected to fetch at least $1 million annually for an SEC program. Jersey patches could be upward of $5 million per season or more. Prideful of their tradition, it’s unclear if any SEC program would swap their midfield logo for a corporate sponsorship — a risky endeavor but also one with a lucrative end.” Florida AD Scott Stricklin: “I believe the NCAA is going to allow us to put a sponsor logo on the field during the regular season. That's an obvious revenue stream that has not been there in the past. Pro sports are putting patches on jerseys. That doesn't seem like something that's crazy for us to consider these days.” As for an expanded SEC conference slate, Dellenger reports the move “could draw as much as $3 million to $5 million in additional revenue per school.” (link)
|
Asked about the prospect of on-field sponsor logos, Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek: “It's definitely something that I support when you look at ways that we can continue to generate additional revenue dollars. Putting a logo on your field, just not renaming our field. Our field is named Frank Broyles Field. It will always be named that. But to put a logo opposite the SEC logos that generates some additional sponsor revenue, that would be something that I would definitively support.” (link)

Several SEC schools that have beefed up their football schedules in recent years would like to see that acknowledged by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. Specifically, they argue that a 9-3 record should qualify them, and Texas AD Chris Del Conte notes: "[We added] Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Florida, immediately on the schedule. We went Big Ten, Big Ten, SEC, SEC solely based on trying to add value to the home ticket having no clue this was coming down the path." Alabama AD Greg Byrne adds: "If you played a tough schedule, a 9-3 team better be considered. I've heard we're pretty good in football in the Southeastern Conference." Florida AD Scott Stricklin also weighs in: “If all they [selection committee] look at is a shiny win-loss record at the expense of teams that have played good schedules, then people stop playing good non-conference games.” Meanwhile, Commissioner Greg Sankey observes: “There's a weight on the committee that's new…I want to see how the committee processes that. … ‘We have an undefeated team so they're in,' is not the standard. It never was the standard. Obviously that stirred up controversy last year." One person familiar with CFP format discussions earlier this year suggests to CBS’ Dennis Dodd this is an extension of the SEC and Big Ten attempting to secure four AQ bids: “What [those conferences are] basically saying is, 'We don't trust the selection committee. Therefore, we basically want to take away their power.’” Stricklin goes on to point out that “one of the things that is screwed up about college athletics is that all these postseason things are done subjectively. It's one of the great things pro sports has. You don't wake up the day after the regular season ends and wait for somebody to tell you [who's in].” (link)
|
But wait, there’s more from the SEC as The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, Seth Emerson & David Ubben indicate Netflix is closing in on a deal with the league to produce an “immersive documentary” during the 2024-25 season. Think ‘Drive to Survive’ for F1. Which programs will be involved? “Teams will be able to opt in or out, and so far it’s not known which ones are definitely in or out. Georgia, expected to be preseason No. 1 or No. 2 this season, is among those with some interest but hasn’t made a decision yet, a source briefed on the discussions said.” (link)

Unrivaled, the new three-on-three women’s basketball league founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, will offer the “highest average salary in the history of women’s professional sports leagues,” according to Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer. The league has received backing by several new investors, including soccer legends Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, along with former NBA stars including Steve Nash and Carmelo Anthony. The league has already received commitments from 10 WNBA All-Stars and will have 30 players across six teams playing full court, and every player will have a piece of equity in the league. The season will begin play in January 2025 and will run during the WNBA’s offseason. Stewart: “It’s amazing, not only for the salaries to be similar or more than your WNBA salary, but to be able to build brand partnerships that can’t come into the W or the NBA. It’s more than just an initial salary, but showing these companies who you are as a player.” (link)

SEC Spring Meetings…
+ SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey talked on the Paul Finebaum Show about how far ahead into the future he’s looking and explained: “Some of that is really filed in how you look at things. The easy thing to do is build a timeline of contracts that tie into sports, whether it's college sports and professional sports, and think about what that means for our positioning in the future. … I was asked yesterday about expansion. That really becomes a back burner issue – although the last time I said that like two months later we were expanding – but in all reality I think there's been so much movement and there's so much tension in some other places that we're really focused on the 16.” Sankey also notes that soon after the pandemic he was the longest tenured commissioner in the Power 5, “and I take that responsibility seriously, but I also decline the nod that I’m somehow all powerful because we will solve these issues, and by ‘we’ I mean the presidents have said that to me in the meeting that ‘you know you're the leader you need to solve this’ and I’m like we will solve these issues, there's no just me. … Now I think there is a position of strength here, and I said to the presidents, you know, at times you expect me to be really strong from our perspective, but you also expect me to be a statesman. And if you want me to just demand, demand, demand here I can do that – and some people may accuse me of having done so – but I think there's also in each of the decisions we've made of late an element of compromise from our perspective.” More. + Leaders throughout the conference are still trying to determine how Title IX factors into the House settlement, according to ESPN’s Heather Dinich and Pete Thamel. Texas President Jay Hartzell weighs in: “As I understand it, the law was not written from the standpoint of this particular kind of payment. It's a new thing. What's been explained to us is the judge in the main case has not opined or ruled in a way that gives much direction about how Title IX fits into the settlement. We're having to chart the course we think is best. That's why we're talking so much about it." Meanwhile, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts believes it shouldn’t be up to each individual school to interpret the law because that would be “wholly unfair in a sense.” He adds: “Like Texas A&M takes a very conservative view, X, Y, Z school takes a very liberal view and suddenly it's disparate. We can't do that. So I think it has to be a consistent application. … You think about proportionality, and you think about in my simple farmer mind, if the same number of female student-athletes are participating as male student-athletes in some form of remuneration for their name, image and likeness, however it gets to me, that's the key. Then should the market then from there dictate or have impact on what that percentage looks like? That would be my orientation, but I guess I could be corrected." More. (link)
+ Several ADs made their way to the Paul Finebaum Show set, including Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione, who says as the Sooners have gone through the transition, “it really does seem like a natural fit. We have so much in common with virtually all of the institutions, many of which are flagship universities in their own state like we are. A lot of tradition and success and our institutional missions are very, very similar. And the other part that doesn't get talked about is there's a collegiality to work together to find how higher education in its competitive world can play off each other to be more successful in helping grow the economy or whatever it is we're trying to do in our own state. So it's really been special to see all that evolve in kind of an organic way.” Texas AD Chris Del Conte joins and explains one positive that came out of COVID was time to assess the landscape and how quickly things were changing. In that evaluation period, Del Conte says there came a time when “we knew we had to do what was right for Texas and OU. And when we galvanized on those thoughts…it was quick. It was really quick.” Castiglione adds: “The tectonic plates, as they say, were heating up well before then if you watched what was going on in the rest of the country…and, by the way, there were a lot of other conversations that were taking place with a lot of other people that they’ll never admit. Not so much by any one particular conference, but these two universities weren’t the only ones thinking about some type of conference realignment.” (link)
+ Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart also joined Finebaum and talked about the process of hiring Men’s Basketball HC Mark Pope. Barnhart explains one of the traits he was looking for was an understanding of what the job means to the fans and to the state, and as the captain of the 1996 national championship team, Pope “understood what it meant to play in Rupp Arena and what it meant to our fans and how special the place at Kentucky was. And our fans needed to hear that and needed to feel that again. There's different components to that – you've got to be able to understand the game and have an ability to coach the game and bring a roster together and all those things that come with the job. And he had done that at a place that's very, very difficult in some respects to do that at BYU. And he did a remarkable job in their first year in the Big 12.” Barnhart also acknowledged that after some initial pushback the fanbase rallied and filled Rupp Arena for Pope’s introductory presser: “It was fascinating to watch. I’ve never seen a battleship turn that quickly, and by Friday evening it had changed, and Sunday we had a revival back in Rupp Arena. I've never been a part of anything like that in my career.” More from Barnhart. (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller discussed the changes in college athletics during a Mackinac Policy Conference conversation with Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) and said: “I’m not an advocate of ‘this is the end of college athletics.’ I don’t believe that. I think this is a new era of college athletics. … There is a reset that is going to happen when it comes to a lot of the NIL activity that is happening, that is impacting the coaches ability to recruit, to retain.” More. Freshly minted Arizona State AD Graham Rossini talks with AZ Big Media about a number of topics, including his leadership style. “I like to lead by example. I like for my interest and passion and the things I represent to come through to others. I’m also very big on attention to detail. So, how do we win these little details while focusing on the big moments? And just showing an exhilaration and enthusiasm for the work. There’s a lot coming at us. It’s not easy in college athletics at this point. But it matters to a lot of people. So, we need to be the ones, as an athletics department, to project confidence and enthusiasm and excitement for the aspects of it we do control.” Rossini also acknowledges some have been critical of his hiring: “I get it; I’m not a known commodity. But, as I said, I’ve thought about ASU every day of my life since I was 11 years old. I feel very confident that no one else is as prepared to understand this university, at this moment in time, in this market, with this fan base, than I will be able to. My lived experience as a Sun Devil and somebody who’s been in the Valley for 25-plus years is what I believe gives me a great head start over anybody else who would have been selected for this responsibility.” More from Rossini. College Sports Communicators has approved its executive board of directors for 2024-25. Arkansas Senior Assoc. AD for Public Relations Kevin Trainor will serve as president and says: “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the more than 4,400 members of College Sports Communicators as the 70th president of this storied organization. Since its inception, CSC and its members have played a vital role in helping tell the inspiring stories of student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the U.S. and Canada. Today, CSC and its members continue to evolve to meet the increasing challenges and demands of effective communications in a rapidly changing intercollegiate athletics landscape. At this watershed moment, I am confident that CSC and its membership will once again play an integral role in helping shape the narrative of college athletics in the years to come." Full board. On Wednesday, a Dauphin County jury in Harrisburg awarded orthopedic surgeon/former Penn State team physician Dr. Scott Lynch $5.25M in punitive and compensatory damages in his case against Penn State Health's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Dr. Kevin Black, the supervisor who announced his removal. Lynch, who filed the suit in August 2019 six months after he was removed from his position, claimed to be retaliated against for complaining about Nittany Lions Football HC James Franklin interfering with medical treatment and return-to-play decisions. Of note, both Penn State and Franklin were dismissed as defendants in 2020 due to the statute of limitations. Lynch hopes the verdict will prompt schools to pay more attention to the issue: “There's not yet been one school punished for violating medical autonomy issues. This is bigger than just Penn State. It's really a national crisis and things have to change.” (link)

From in front of the Law360 paywall: “A West Virginia federal judge will not allow the NCAA to escape the bulk of an antitrust lawsuit filed by a 22-year-old, ruling he sufficiently supported his claims accusing the organization of contract interference when it deemed him ineligible to play basketball after a midseason transfer.” The student-athlete involved is former Manhattan-to-West Virginia-to-Arizona State Men’s Basketball transfer Jose Perez. The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna catches up with Southern Utah Football HC DeLane Fitzgerald who received a one-game suspension for, per Fortuna, “seemingly minor tampering violations.” More Fitzgerald: “I made a mistake by not looking up that they weren’t in it (the Transfer Portal). This is my 29th year of college football, my 16th year as a head coach. It’s the first time there’s ever been an investigation of myself or of any of our staff members. I would’ve thought that the negotiation and everything would have been a lot more realistic and reasonable than it was. I got a year’s jail time for a jaywalking ticket, is what it amounts to.” More behind the paywall. (link)

ESPN’s Dave Wilson profiles Texas A&M Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle’s vision for the program. Schlossnagle: "Traditions are awesome, but traditional thinking is not awesome. We've worked hard to try and find that blend of honoring A&M and everything that it is and its core traditions. But at the same time, we're making our game and our program attractive to a 15-year-old because that's who we're recruiting." One change he’s made has been to invite the Aggie Dance Team to perform at games. "They don't get to dance at football games, which I think is idiotic. That's just old Aggie thinking. ... The first year, with some people you would have thought I changed the school colors to burnt orange." For his part, Aggies AD Trev Alberts is on board with Schlossnagle’s philosophy. "Do you want somebody who cares so much that they're into every single detail to make the program great? Or somebody who doesn't care? We've got a guy leading our baseball program that understands the importance of the details and is a high-level executor. And quite frankly, that's why we've got a top-five baseball team in the country." Schlossnagle explains he’d like TAMU to build a new ballpark twice the size of the current stadium, which opened in 2012. “What Camden Yards did to Major League Baseball, I think Texas A&M should strive to do that for college baseball.” Alberts: "That's why I was attracted to Texas A&M. This is a place where you can dream like that. ... I don't want to have to push coaches. I want coaches who push me and our administrative team and this place is filled with them. And Jim is one of the leaders." (link)
