SEC Spring Meetings…
+ Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts had perhaps yesterday’s most noteworthy quote: “We’ve just always had enough increasing revenue to overcome dumb expenses. I’ve said it 100 times, and I’ll say it again: We don’t have a revenue problem in college athletics, we have an expense problem.” (link)
+ The league’s football coaches made it known they want walk-ons to continue being part of the sport, with Texas A&M HC Mike Elko saying of capping rosters at 85 players: "I'm strongly against it. I think it's absolutely against college football, what it stands for and what it's about. I think that would be a major problem, especially, when you look at legacies of Texas A&M kids that are going to get the opportunity to play football at Texas A&M potentially taken away from them.” Georgia HC Kirby Smart added: "I don't know anybody that would be against having walk-ons. At what cost does that bring us? I think it hurts high school football, and football as a whole, when kids can't even dream [for the opportunity to walk on]." Oklahoma HC Brent Venables: “We’re going to expand the length of the season, we’re going to play more games, but we’re going to have a smaller roster? …“I know that there’s a cost, that the more guys you’ve got on the roster there’s a cost, and somewhere somebody’s got to balance the books. But I don’t want it to hurt the game and development because college isn’t like the NFL when it comes to development. These are young guys that are still growing and maturing.” (link, link)
+ Asked what he would say to coaches who express concerns about roster caps, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey remarked: “I’ll tell you exactly what I’d say, I’ve not talked to our coaches about that other than individually to say hey, slow down guys. So we had a meeting three weeks ago, some of you have sources, that’s great. I think it’s a bit of a threat, a danger that we can’t have a conversation about concepts that don’t populate themselves outside the room. So then that provokes a reaction. … I know other conferences have discussed it, coaches have then texted our coaches, they get fired up, and we said just wait. We’re gonna have a conversation, that’s where it is, that’s a concept. And understand that football captures the attention, but we have 21 championship sports, all of which need to have a level of conversation about that roster piece.” (link)
+ Sankey also weighed in on private equity and warned schools to be careful about “quick fixes.” Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes Sankey “also makes mention, without its name, of the ‘Super League,’ which, he says, did not consider academics in the plan.” Sankey: “In my experience, those involved in private equity want to be paid back.” (link)
+ LSU AD Scott Woodward joins The Paul Finebaum Show and explains how he gets along with his coaches: “I go in there viewing it more like showbiz. There's an executive producer, that's me. You have a high-profile director and talent, which is actors and a director, and they run the show. You don't know who the executive producer of The Godfather was, but you certainly know who Coppola and Pacino and Brando are. So, I'm in the background, I'm running the show, and I'm still in charge, but you partner with these guys, you don't rule over a guy making you know 8X more than you, you just don't.” Woodward also talks about his preference for dealing directly with coaches rather than agents: “Don’t get me wrong, I still deal with the Trace Armstrongs and Jimmy Sextons a lot, and I have relationships with them. But there's a time when you have to put those guys aside and go straight at them and that's what I'm not afraid to do and happy to do it.” One thing Woodward looks for when hiring coaches is finding individuals who are “a lot smarter than me, really high IQs. Kim [Mulkey is] smart as hell, [Brian Kelly is] smart as hell, Jay Johnson – they have that ‘it’ and I kind of think that's the gestalt.” Full interview. (link)
+ Another topic set to be discussed involved injury reports, and Georgia’s Smart told reporters: "Again, all I know is we’re going to talk about it. I was just told that in the last 24 to 48 hours just like you guys were. If it helps with gambling, then I’m all for it. If it’s geared for getting knowledge out there that people are trying to get from our student-athletes and it protects them, I’m certainly for that.” Still, Smart believes more conversation needs to take place. “I want to find out more about it, find out what the stipulations are, what are the timetables, what are we talking about? The NFL model works for them. I don’t know what all this entails for us." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner weighs in on the selection of Arizona State AD Graham Rossini, writing: “ASU President Michael Crow has done it again, folks, filling a key role in his athletic department with someone who would not have been hired for the job at any other power conference school. … At a time of unprecedented change in college sports, when experience is vital, Crow did not seriously consider any other candidates to lead ASU athletics. Well-connected, long-held industry contacts? Not important. Experience hiring football and basketball coaches? Unnecessary. Only Crow can make an internal promotion seem like an outside-the-box hire.” Wilner cites multiple sources who say Rossini is a “competent administrator” and Wilner agrees that “Rossini is more qualified for his role than [former AD Ray] Anderson and [former Football HC Herm] Edwards were at the time of their appointments. But does he stand a chance? The second he accepted the position, Rossini was understandably cast as Crow’s puppet — his success or failure inexorably tied to the whims of a boss whose brand is mud with many fans and donors.” Wilner goes on to observe that ASU’s decision to further intertwine athletics with the main campus comes as many are exploring the possibility of separating the two and wonders if Rossini “has the authority to take the necessary steps [to succeed] without Crow’s blessing? Consider us skeptical.” (link)

UCLA expects to participate in a revenue-sharing model with student-athletes pursuant to the House settlement and confirms the revenue cap of 22% could amount to the distribution of $20-22M per year. A Bruins spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “It’s a new era in collegiate athletics. We embrace this transformation for what it means for our student-athletes: the opportunity to receive direct NIL payments and revenue sharing. Our goals are to support and develop our student-athletes, compete at the highest level and maintain fiscal sustainability.” The spokesperson didn’t go into specifics but added: “With finite resources, an investment in revenue sharing will greatly alter our financial outlook, and we anticipate important discussions with campus leadership around equity, who will receive these new benefits, and how we remain both competitive and fiscally sustainable. Our student-athletes and their holistic development remain at the core of everything we do, and we will continue to support and develop them while investing in priority areas of academics, nutrition and mental health resources.” (link)

Colgate has released plans for the new 65,000-square-foot basketball and volleyball arena that will replace the Reid Athletics Center. The Carey Center, named in honor of a $23M lead gift from the Carey family, will feature a seating capacity of 1,650 and additional standing room; a practice court; team suites for volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball; the Hall of Honor; media facilities; and a satellite sports medicine, strength, and wellness space. The Raiders are also planning to build a 40,000-square-foot facility that will “serve multiple purposes while focusing on priorities of unifying sports performance and training, locating all elements of the football program within one facility, and providing additional space for student-athlete support.” (link)

The Tennessean's Aria Gerson notes that nine of 16 regional hosts in the Men’s College World Series have opted to play late while seven have chosen to play early. “Playing early: Kentucky, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia, FSU, Virginia, ECU. Playing late: Tennessee, UNC, Clemson, Oklahoma, NC State, Oklahoma State, Arizona, UCSB, Oregon State.” D1Baseball’s Joe Healy: “This has been one of the biggest subtle changes in regional strategy since I've been following college [baseball]. Hosts playing the early game used to be rare, but now it's roughly 50/50. Coaches value being able to get in and get the game played, especially if weather is a concern.” (link)

As softball continues to grow in popularity, The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley takes a look at what’s needed to create a viable professional league and notes: “Research and experts point to at least three necessities for a future definitive professional softball league: investment, viewership and access.” Massachusetts sports management professor Nicole Melton points out that the “main tipping point [for the NWSL] was the investment that they received. You've seen now this ripple effect of that and I think that's changing the narrative around what the value of women's sport is, and so that it is an investment that people need to get behind.” UMass Boston professor Allison Smith adds of the importance of access: “If you can see it, you can actually become a fan of it. But if you've never known their story or never seen them play, it's hard to invest in that. It's hard for pro women's sports to grow if you can't even access it.” Right now, two leagues – Athletes Unlimited and World Professional Fastpitch – are vying to become the preeminent professional league, and Smith believes AU has an advantage via its ESPN deal, whereas “[WFP] looks like you're streaming a high school or a travel ball game. If you don't invest in giving it the platform where viewers can see the game and see the different angles, and I know that takes money, but if you don't invest in that part of it on the front end, why would anyone tune in?” Melton is bullish on the next five to 10 years, particularly after softball returns to the 2028 Olympics: “If anybody can do it, it’s those softball players. They are committed, driven and they will make it happen, but it's just making sure that we give them a proper platform to perform on. And that rests on the shoulders of the media companies and the sponsors and supporting these women.” (link)

A consortium of private investors from Silicon Valley has submitted plans to acquire Sheffield United for over £100M. The plans will be reviewed by the English Football League, which will conduct an owners and directors’ test. They also ask potential owners for “Future Financial Information” about their plans for the future and proof of funds. The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath and John Percy report there is “confidence the final steps will be completed and the new owners can assume control over the summer.” (link); Pounds-to-dollars converter. According to the New York Daily News’ Dick Weiss, “speculation is circulating about potential shifts in college sports conferences. There is discussion about Utah possibly moving to the ACC despite its recent move to the Big 12, with some suggesting the ACC might be a better fit due to its ESPN network agreement and potential for increased TV value. However, skepticism exists regarding the stability and attractiveness of the ACC compared to the Big 12.” (link); The Utes slammed the door shut on that speculation, asserting in a statement that “we are proud to be entering into membership in the Big 12 Conference in the coming months & excited to join our new colleagues and member institutions. A report over the weekend that suggested otherwise is completely fabricated & irresponsible.” (link)

California Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-41) is removing the revenue-sharing language from his proposed state bill in light of the House settlement but will continue to push forward with AB 252, which prevents schools from cutting sports and reducing or eliminating scholarships. Holden: “ While the progress toward athlete revenue sharing is groundbreaking, college athletes lack basic physical and academic protections that AB 252 will provide.” (link)

Altius Sports Partners CEO Casey Schwab tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger he believes collectives won’t be going away anytime soon, adding: “There is going to be potential for collective leadership to challenge the new rules.” Dellenger points out that some collectives are “planning to, or have already, transitioned into marketing agencies, funded not solely by booster dollars but by the athletic department itself or the university’s fundraising foundation. For some, the wheels of such an evolution aren’t just now cranking to life. They’ve been rolling for a while. In Mississippi, for instance, university and collective leaders led a campaign this spring to change their state statute to permit such a move.” The Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective on July 1 will transition from a booster-funded collective to a school-financed third-party agency, and Executive Director Walker Jones says: “Our major gift donors will be thrilled to death with it. Now, the money, instead of only coming from John Doe’s pocket, also comes from the university. We then go hunt out deals for the athletes and get them active in the community to satisfy [NIL agreements].” While part of the House settlement seeks to limit or eliminate the role boosters can have in offering recruiting inducements disguised as NIL, Matt Hibbs, COO for the Georgia-focused Classic City Collective, tells Dellenger: “Booster payments… you can never completely legislate that away. If a booster owns a business, who's to say he doesn’t see value in this?” Forward Counsel CEO Brian Davis adds: “Any effort to try to eliminate what’s been created by collectives has a significant risk of violating antitrust laws. … You can be certain that we are following things closely and have a team ready to enforce the rights in court if necessary.” (link)

Playfly Sports Properties President Christy Hedgpeth Q&As with On3’s Eric Prisbell about the most pressing questions schools will face in the wake of the House settlement. Hedgpeth tells Prisbell that “college sports are undervalued. [Schools] really need to be thinking more like brands and more like media companies. These changes are – and we’ve already seen it – definitely forcing them to have a more commercial mindset, because they are going to be under enormous budget pressure, not that they weren’t already. But from the damages [payments] to revenue sharing to NIL collectives, there’s much more pressure on them to drive revenue.” In regards to how the settlement might change the setup of athletic departments, Hedgpeth notes there is an “opportunity for maybe more traditional business experience to be a factor, a more emphasized factor maybe in hiring athletic directors. Or it could even be in creating new positions, whether it’s a CRO position type of thing that I know a couple of schools, in particular, are looking to do to really try to build more in-house expertise. That’s expensive. It’s hard to do. And that’s where I think we feel like we can play a really important role.” Hedgpeth on the impact of private equity in college sports: “It just sort of proves out what we have been saying, and why we were founded, that college sports is undervalued. They clearly see that. They’re rushing in with capital. I think anyone who takes on that capital will need to be ready for a much higher level of scrutiny on their every move. It’ll be interesting to see. There’s certainly a need for more capital.” (link)

Le Moyne is planning a $45M expansion and renovation of its athletic facilities that will include a team community center with locker rooms and sports medicine facilities, a strength and conditioning facility for student athletes, a fitness center and the addition of a track and field complex and tennis courts. The school will also renovate its Vincent B. Ryan Pool and other parts of the athletic complex. Up to $12M in state grants have been approved to support the upgrades, and Le Moyne says it will fundraise the remaining $33M. Some of the renovated and expanded facilities will be open to the community as well as Le Moyne athletes, students and employees. (link)

Florida Football HC Billy Napier says he is limited in what he can say due to the ongoing litigation involving Georgia QB Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit, “but I do have confidence in our legal team. I am comfortable with my actions, and I’m thankful for the university’s support. We’re going to keep it at that, kind of let the process take its course.” Napier did add that he’s confident the suit won’t derail the program's momentum from this offseason. “A lot of this narrative has been out there for a long time, right? I think we got that question two years ago or a year and a half ago. And I don’t necessarily think it’s slowed us down to some degree. So look. We’re going to keep moving forward. This process has been ongoing — I think ultimately the NCAA process. We can’t say much more than that.” Georgia HC Kirby Smart says he has stayed out of the situation: “I told [Rashada] that would be between him and his family and his attorneys. Not really for me to get involved in; Georgia’s not involved in it in any way. … It’s a sign of the times, possibly. I don’t get really caught up in that. I worry about my little bubble at Georgia. That’s outside the bubble for me.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey also weighs in: “I’m not a fan of lawsuits. That’s what I think. Is that the only lawsuit involving a coach in the last year? It won’t be the last. We have a legal system, and people have a right to pursue what they view as grievances. And the legal system sorts that out.” (link)

As part of its ongoing partnership with RealResponse, IC360 announces its Alert360 platform, a versatile channel mix of QR codes, web forms, text messaging, and email designed to ensure players, coaches, trainers, and other individuals who have experienced threats of harm or who may have witnessed or are aware of unscrupulous behavior and actions, can report issues anonymously without fear of retaliation. Alert360 allows organizations to “rebrand this anonymous, two-way integrity portal as their own. There are a couple of options for managing the portal: Outsource portal management to IC360’s trained professionals or select and task administrators within an organization to create a joint portal management process with IC360.” IC360 CEO Matt Holt: “The implementation of Alert360, powered by RealResponse, is another example of how we help our partners to stay one step ahead. An anonymous tip can help limit and prevent acts or threats of physical and emotional harm or intimidation while thwarting attempts to undermine the integrity of sports competitions.” (link)

Snoop Dogg announces the Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice by Dre & Snoop will be the first bowl game to offer NIL deals to all players. Arizona Bowl Executive Director Kym Adair says this was “100% Snoop’s idea.” Action Network’s Brett McMurphy notes the amount players will receive has yet to be determined and “will likely involve community service while in Tucson. Players are not required to play in the game to receive an NIL deal but are expected to be part of the bowl’s traveling party.” One Group of 5 AD tells McMurphy: “It definitely will help.
