Kansas AD Travis Goff has agreed to a new seven-year contract through 2031, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who reports Goff will go from “being the Big 12's lowest-paid athletic director at a base of nearly $750K per year to making an average of $1.6M over the next seven years, which will put him near the top of the conference.” (link)

Stephen F. Austin has officially accepted an invitation to rejoin the Southland Conference beginning July 1, 2024. Lumberjacks AD Michael McBroom: “We are in a dynamic, new era of college athletics. We need stability, but also bold and strategic thinking to ensure a bright future for SFA. The SLC is a conference on the rise, with visionary leadership and a strategic plan that aligns with our own goals for our athletics program and the university. This affiliation puts in an incredibly competitive and historic athletic community, aligns us with regional peers in Texas and Louisiana and allows us a greater opportunity to engage with our alumni, fans and prospective students across the entire region. This was an easy decision for us in that the SLC offered us an opportunity to boldly move forward with confidence and excitement.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin comments on the potential of Florida State joining the SEC: “We have a good relationship with our friends in Tallahassee. No school has a veto in this league. If you get three-fourths of league to support expansion, we're going to expand. Anybody who made our league better, we'd be supportive of joining the SEC. Whenever we've expanded in the past, the leadership of the league was able to lay out this is why it makes sense to bring in Arkansas and South Carolina, A&M & Missouri, why Texas & OU make sense. We all saw financial projections, competitive rationale and three-fourths of the league said, ‘Let's do this.' If there were ever opportunities out there - & again no one has had any conversations - that is the scenario where somebody walks in & says 'here's a school, here's what they bring to the table, here's how it makes us all better.' We would be supportive of that.” (link)

North Texas AD Jared Mosley says the timeline for expanding its athletic center has been changed due to the changing financial realities in college sports. “When you look at the complexities we face, we have adjusted our timeline. We are also exploring if we can do this in a couple of phases. Can we generate enough to start a phase one and do it when construction is going to be cheaper than it will be in 18 months to two years when we could realistically be ready for the whole thing?” Mosley estimates the project, originally set to break ground by the end of 2024, will cost around $40M. “Until we figure out what a revenue share model looks like, and when that’s going to be implemented at our level, it’s really hard to plan. We just don’t have the details yet to start to roll out how we’re going to move forward. … We’re hopeful that we can do this in a couple of phases and hit $10M [in fundraising] in the next year. Once we get there, we have a couple of other pieces we are working on that could move the number fairly quickly. A lot of these gifts will take a year or two, whether it’s a personal donor or a corporate entity. We’re going to keep plugging away and hope to make progress sooner rather than later.” UNT needs to raise $20M for the project and the university will cover the other half. (link)

Montana AD Kent Haslam says the House settlement will cost the Grizzlies roughly $200K in distribution reductions each year and adds: "I couldn't even answer and tell you how it all happened because none of us knows how it happened. We weren't consulted. We weren't asked, and I understand that, I guess. The line in big-time college athletics is clearly drawn. … I will add to that: We've got to get some resolution. We've got to get some direction. We've got to have some federal help. We've got to have things where the student-athletes are declared as students where they're not employees. We've got to get some antitrust safe harbor where we can set some guardrails and some boundaries and if this House settlement leads towards that, then I'm all for that. It's just unfortunate that the pain to get there impacts those who really don't benefit at all from it." Haslam goes on to remark that it’s “worrisome for me that we run faster than we've got strength. And we're in a business where you mix competition and you mix money and you mix egos, and it makes kind of a funny milkshake. And so navigating that already is difficult. So it's worrisome that we start to do things that are out of character, out of what our core mission is, and we lose sight of really what we are, what we represent.” (link)

Miami (FL) will begin settling on plans to expand its indoor practice facility and add a new weight room, according to Hurricanes AD Dan Radakovich. "As we flip over on June 1 to the new fiscal year, it looks like we have the funding available to begin to move forward with the expansion of the Carol Sofer indoor practice facility and a brand new weight room. That was always going to be a part of the entire football development. So we were just looking to see if we're going to do that first, because that's a little bit more player centric and helps with the development of our football team. We're still moving forward and looking at funding opportunities and other items associated with the bigger building, the football operations center. We haven't forgotten about that at all. It's just that this one, the expansion of the indoor, the 100-yards indoor, 100 yards outdoor, plus a new weight room is something we were able to get done a little quicker to be able to give Mario (Cristobal) and his staff and his student athletes a really good spot to continue to train and get better as a program." Radakovich also notes he doesn’t foresee the ACC expanding in the near future. "I think the television contract with the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and ACC, have some time to run right now. The big college football playoff expansion television contract is complete at this point in time. So I think that there's going to be, for at least maybe the end of this decade, there will be some peace, if you can say it that way, as it relates to conference expansion. And probably we'll look to come up again as we flip from 2030-31 when some of the other conference TV contracts come forward again." (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell explores how schools will seek to supplement the revenue-sharing cap established in the House settlement, and Altius Sports Partners COO Tommy Gray posits the “commercial NIL ecosystem is going to be an arms race. Providing athletes with an infrastructure and real tangible dollars that they can count on, on top of the cap, outside of the cap, is going to be very important to remain competitive at the highest levels of sports." As has been oft-reported, the settlement will seek to have an enforcement mechanism to police collectives, but Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter is among those who are skeptical, telling Prisbell: "The NCAA and conferences think this new enforcement arm structure will be able to stop [collectives]. But I don't see how. It's going to be interesting to see how schools try to circumvent the cap. Because that will definitely happen – whether it's through collectives or some other way." Gray adds: “When there is a cap in place, and if there are more robust enforcement mechanisms in and around synthetic NIL [collective dollars], commercial NIL dollars for athletes are going to be really important. That is the new arms race." (link)

Temple alumni Lou Parisi and Jackie Dansak have launched the Owl Elite Fund to support student-athletes' NIL endeavors. The collective has also signed a one-year deal with strategic marketing firm Innovative New Media to develop monetization strategies. Owls AD Arthur Johnson: “The collaboration between the Owl Elite Fund and Innovative New Media creates a formidable partnership that will be well-positioned to assist businesses of all sizes looking to engage Temple student-athletes in name, image, and likeness activities. From the Owl Elite Fund and the TUFF Fund to Temple’s new multimedia rights holder, Van Wagner, the future of NIL is bright on Broad Street.” (link)

Southern Utah agrees that tampering violations occurred in its football program when HC DeLane Fitzgerald impermissibly contacted two student-athletes from other schools who were not in the transfer portal, according to an agreement released by the Committee on Infractions. As a result of the impermissible recruiting contacts and Fitzgerald's personal involvement in the violations, the parties agreed that Fitzgerald violated head coach responsibility rules. The school also agreed that it failed to monitor its football program. Prescribed penalties include a two-year show-cause for Fitzgerald, a two-week prohibition of all recruiting activities during a permissible 2024 recruiting period, and a two-week off-campus recruiting ban for Fitzgerald, among others. SEC Spring Meetings…
+ Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts had perhaps yesterday’s most noteworthy quote: “We’ve just always had enough increasing revenue to overcome dumb expenses. I’ve said it 100 times, and I’ll say it again: We don’t have a revenue problem in college athletics, we have an expense problem.” (link)
+ The league’s football coaches made it known they want walk-ons to continue being part of the sport, with Texas A&M HC Mike Elko saying of capping rosters at 85 players: "I'm strongly against it. I think it's absolutely against college football, what it stands for and what it's about. I think that would be a major problem, especially, when you look at legacies of Texas A&M kids that are going to get the opportunity to play football at Texas A&M potentially taken away from them.” Georgia HC Kirby Smart added: "I don't know anybody that would be against having walk-ons. At what cost does that bring us? I think it hurts high school football, and football as a whole, when kids can't even dream [for the opportunity to walk on]." Oklahoma HC Brent Venables: “We’re going to expand the length of the season, we’re going to play more games, but we’re going to have a smaller roster? …“I know that there’s a cost, that the more guys you’ve got on the roster there’s a cost, and somewhere somebody’s got to balance the books. But I don’t want it to hurt the game and development because college isn’t like the NFL when it comes to development. These are young guys that are still growing and maturing.” (link, link)
+ Asked what he would say to coaches who express concerns about roster caps, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey remarked: “I’ll tell you exactly what I’d say, I’ve not talked to our coaches about that other than individually to say hey, slow down guys. So we had a meeting three weeks ago, some of you have sources, that’s great. I think it’s a bit of a threat, a danger that we can’t have a conversation about concepts that don’t populate themselves outside the room. So then that provokes a reaction. … I know other conferences have discussed it, coaches have then texted our coaches, they get fired up, and we said just wait. We’re gonna have a conversation, that’s where it is, that’s a concept. And understand that football captures the attention, but we have 21 championship sports, all of which need to have a level of conversation about that roster piece.” (link)
+ Sankey also weighed in on private equity and warned schools to be careful about “quick fixes.” Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes Sankey “also makes mention, without its name, of the ‘Super League,’ which, he says, did not consider academics in the plan.” Sankey: “In my experience, those involved in private equity want to be paid back.” (link)
+ LSU AD Scott Woodward joins The Paul Finebaum Show and explains how he gets along with his coaches: “I go in there viewing it more like showbiz. There's an executive producer, that's me. You have a high-profile director and talent, which is actors and a director, and they run the show. You don't know who the executive producer of The Godfather was, but you certainly know who Coppola and Pacino and Brando are. So, I'm in the background, I'm running the show, and I'm still in charge, but you partner with these guys, you don't rule over a guy making you know 8X more than you, you just don't.” Woodward also talks about his preference for dealing directly with coaches rather than agents: “Don’t get me wrong, I still deal with the Trace Armstrongs and Jimmy Sextons a lot, and I have relationships with them. But there's a time when you have to put those guys aside and go straight at them and that's what I'm not afraid to do and happy to do it.” One thing Woodward looks for when hiring coaches is finding individuals who are “a lot smarter than me, really high IQs. Kim [Mulkey is] smart as hell, [Brian Kelly is] smart as hell, Jay Johnson – they have that ‘it’ and I kind of think that's the gestalt.” Full interview. (link)
+ Another topic set to be discussed involved injury reports, and Georgia’s Smart told reporters: "Again, all I know is we’re going to talk about it. I was just told that in the last 24 to 48 hours just like you guys were. If it helps with gambling, then I’m all for it. If it’s geared for getting knowledge out there that people are trying to get from our student-athletes and it protects them, I’m certainly for that.” Still, Smart believes more conversation needs to take place. “I want to find out more about it, find out what the stipulations are, what are the timetables, what are we talking about? The NFL model works for them. I don’t know what all this entails for us." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner weighs in on the selection of Arizona State AD Graham Rossini, writing: “ASU President Michael Crow has done it again, folks, filling a key role in his athletic department with someone who would not have been hired for the job at any other power conference school. … At a time of unprecedented change in college sports, when experience is vital, Crow did not seriously consider any other candidates to lead ASU athletics. Well-connected, long-held industry contacts? Not important. Experience hiring football and basketball coaches? Unnecessary. Only Crow can make an internal promotion seem like an outside-the-box hire.” Wilner cites multiple sources who say Rossini is a “competent administrator” and Wilner agrees that “Rossini is more qualified for his role than [former AD Ray] Anderson and [former Football HC Herm] Edwards were at the time of their appointments. But does he stand a chance? The second he accepted the position, Rossini was understandably cast as Crow’s puppet — his success or failure inexorably tied to the whims of a boss whose brand is mud with many fans and donors.” Wilner goes on to observe that ASU’s decision to further intertwine athletics with the main campus comes as many are exploring the possibility of separating the two and wonders if Rossini “has the authority to take the necessary steps [to succeed] without Crow’s blessing? Consider us skeptical.” (link)

UCLA expects to participate in a revenue-sharing model with student-athletes pursuant to the House settlement and confirms the revenue cap of 22% could amount to the distribution of $20-22M per year. A Bruins spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “It’s a new era in collegiate athletics. We embrace this transformation for what it means for our student-athletes: the opportunity to receive direct NIL payments and revenue sharing. Our goals are to support and develop our student-athletes, compete at the highest level and maintain fiscal sustainability.” The spokesperson didn’t go into specifics but added: “With finite resources, an investment in revenue sharing will greatly alter our financial outlook, and we anticipate important discussions with campus leadership around equity, who will receive these new benefits, and how we remain both competitive and fiscally sustainable. Our student-athletes and their holistic development remain at the core of everything we do, and we will continue to support and develop them while investing in priority areas of academics, nutrition and mental health resources.” (link)

Colgate has released plans for the new 65,000-square-foot basketball and volleyball arena that will replace the Reid Athletics Center. The Raiders are also planning to build a 40,000-square-foot facility that will “serve multiple purposes while focusing on priorities of unifying sports performance and training, locating all elements of the football program within one facility, and providing additional space for student-athlete support.” (link)

The Tennessean's Aria Gerson notes that nine of 16 regional hosts in the Men’s College World Series have opted to play late while seven have chosen to play early. “Playing early: Kentucky, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia, FSU, Virginia, ECU. Playing late: Tennessee, UNC, Clemson, Oklahoma, NC State, Oklahoma State, Arizona, UCSB, Oregon State.” D1Baseball’s Joe Healy: “This has been one of the biggest subtle changes in regional strategy since I've been following college [baseball]. Hosts playing the early game used to be rare, but now it's roughly 50/50. Coaches value being able to get in and get the game played, especially if weather is a concern.” (link)

As softball continues to grow in popularity, The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley takes a look at what’s needed to create a viable professional league and notes: “Research and experts point to at least three necessities for a future definitive professional softball league: investment, viewership and access.” Massachusetts sports management professor Nicole Melton points out that the “main tipping point [for the NWSL] was the investment that they received. You've seen now this ripple effect of that and I think that's changing the narrative around what the value of women's sport is, and so that it is an investment that people need to get behind.” UMass Boston professor Allison Smith adds of the importance of access: “If you can see it, you can actually become a fan of it. But if you've never known their story or never seen them play, it's hard to invest in that. It's hard for pro women's sports to grow if you can't even access it.” Right now, two leagues – Athletes Unlimited and World Professional Fastpitch – are vying to become the preeminent professional league, and Smith believes AU has an advantage via its ESPN deal, whereas “[WFP] looks like you're streaming a high school or a travel ball game. If you don't invest in giving it the platform where viewers can see the game and see the different angles, and I know that takes money, but if you don't invest in that part of it on the front end, why would anyone tune in?” Melton is bullish on the next five to 10 years, particularly after softball returns to the 2028 Olympics: “If anybody can do it, it’s those softball players. They are committed, driven and they will make it happen, but it's just making sure that we give them a proper platform to perform on. And that rests on the shoulders of the media companies and the sponsors and supporting these women.” (link)
