Minnesota AD Mark Coyle on the challenges of leading & managing amid such rapid industry change: “Seven, eight months ago, I couldn't even talk to you about Dinkytown Athletes. Now we can talk about it and work with them on fundraising and programming. When I do donor dinners it's talking about NIL. Right now we're chasing ghosts and that makes it really hard to manage.” St. Thomas AD Phil Esten adds perspective: “I think particularly with these young people coming out of COVID, they have had different experiences. I think the best leaders try to meet employees where they're at, and the best coaches try to meet their student-athletes where they're at. We don't even know where they're at.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner attempts to look into the future of the Pac-12 & Mountain West, and sets some expectations of how consolidation may go down: “Pac-12 only: 65 percent; MW only: 30 percent; Pac-12 and MW: 5 percent. It’s difficult to envision a scenario in which competing conferences across the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones, both at the Group of Five level, would serve the interests of all the schools involved. There just aren’t enough schools to support two leagues. Baked into our calculation is the underlying desire to keep the Pac-12 alive. [...] Before any of that happens, however, Washington State and Oregon State will 1) make every effort to gain admittance to either the Big 12 or ACC or 2) provide a landing spot for Cal and Stanford if the ACC dissolves in the next 12-18 months.” (link)

Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins believes the “problem with college sports isn’t the athletes. It’s the schools.” She goes on: “The college athlete isn’t the one who needs reminding he or she is a student. It’s the colleges that forgot — they’re the ones that ran so profiteeringly amok that they turned athletes into labor law case studies. Once you make that simple thought reversal, the NCAA’s mess becomes easier to sort out. It’s going to take an act of Congress to fix it, you bet. But what needs regulating is the conduct of the schools, not the kids.” Further, Jenkins believes the litany of antitrust casts and legislative reform bills in headlines of late all “slightly miss the mark because they wrongly focus on athlete behaviors rather than institutional ones.” Jenkins lauds insight from former UC Davis AD Kevin Blue, who in his open letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker states: “From a behavioral economics perspective, financial decision-making in college sports has been perfectly rational within the structures of the current system. They have chased their own competitive self-interest, the natural result of what he calls an ‘eat-everything-you-can-possibly-kill system.’” Jenkins sums up her stance: “Alabama should have to eat its own rotting meal, not shove it down Seton Hall’s throat.” Lots more. Interesting read from Sports Illustrated on how NIL may systematically impact the development of young talent in European leagues. Octagon Basketball Europe Senior Director David Carro Funes: “A player like Luka Doncic would never play for Real Madrid if NIL existed. For a player that good, the amount of money an American college could offer him would be much more lucrative than any EuroLeague contract at that age. It is a widespread practice in Europe that talented players are signed to long-term youth contracts that, and, for players like Luka, who is capable of playing on the first team before age 18, make a tiny fraction of what older players command.” Barcelona Basketball Sporting Director Mario Fernandez: “Before [NIL], the chance of continuing basketball and personal development at US College was already an attractive option, but now the appearance of economic figures that are completely unattainable in the European sports paradigm makes going to college almost an obsession for most European players. [...] [Players] are driven not only by their own ambitions but also by those of their agents, who, motivated by the possibility of monetizing their athletes at an absolutely unimaginable age/price range not long ago, push them [to America] and constrain the development system in Europe.” More from Noah Henderson. The Athletic’s Chris Vannini pens on how Dallas Baptist has become an “unlikely perennial contender” in college baseball. The Patriots are one of just five programs to reach the NCAA tournament in each of the last 10 seasons, joining Vanderbilt, Florida, LSU and Oklahoma State. “With state-of-the-art facilities and a long list of MLB Draft picks — 73 in the last 16 years — Dallas Baptist has carried itself like a top-level college baseball program since it moved up to D-I in 2004. The Patriots haven’t had a losing season since 1978. Nobody involved with the program knows anything but winning. Their 44 wins this season are third-most in the country.” DBU HC Dan Heefner on spotting talented players and coaching ‘em up: “A lot of people are successful just on recruiting — get the best players you can and let them go. For us to compete, we’ve got to develop them. They come in at this (level) and we pour into them every day. By the time the season rolls around, they’re a different player.” Baseball America writer Teddy Cahill: “They’ve invested in a way a lot of mid-major programs don’t. … We’re at the point where it’s not like they’re a mid-major program. It’s more like, of course they’re good.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel answers a mailbag question about why Miami (FL) isn’t making a public push to join the SEC or Big Ten and points out it’s “perhaps because the program doesn’t have much to beat its chest out about these days. Here’s a wild one for you: Miami has not had one top-10 season since it joined the conference in 2004. [Florida State] and Clemson have done so a combined 12 times over the same span. But also, if you’re Miami, why waste the time/money/energy? Either FSU/Clemson find a way out of the [ACC’s] Grant of Rights, at which point anyone can, or if they don’t, those schools spent all the billable hours to find out. But in the event the ACC does implode, yes, Miami would be very attractive to the Big Ten. Starting with the fact it’s a top-75 university and recently anointed AAU member. It has a strong overall athletic department, regardless of where football currently sits. Even today, Miami football remains a decent TV brand. And every Big Ten school recruits in South Florida.” Mandel also notes that FSU is not an AAU member, and all 18 B1G members were AAU members at the time of their invitation. Nebraska has since lost its spot. (link)

College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Executive Director Samantha Barany joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle for a conversation about fortifying Olympic sports, the growth and projection of swimming and diving leading up to the 2024 Olympics and more. Barany cites the Sun Belt’s addition of swimming and diving as an example of the sport’s upward trajectory and adds: “I think we can find an opportunity to capture in an Olympic year the excitement that swimming and diving brings. The NCAA Division I Championship is the fastest meet in the world bar none because we have such a special system here where we have the best athletes both domestically and internationally come into the NCAA to train and compete and they do it at the NCAA. And every year the NCAA championship is full of world record holders and Olympic gold medalists, and finding an opportunity to capitalize on that, finding the right date for our championship, the right place for our championship to be able to highlight those student-athletes in the sport is going to be a really important piece of the work that we're doing.” More on Connect. Fox Sports President of Insight and Analytics Michael Mulvihill joins The Joel Klatt Show to talk about how the NFL and college football TV schedules are constructed and points out that while there is obviously competition between networks, “I think we do root for each other’s success. We want to be number one, we want to have the best ratings story of any network, but we want the entire marketplace to do well, too. Our fortunes are very much intertwined and so if CBS and NBC are having success with The Big Ten, that probably means we're having success with The Big Ten. If CBS and NBC are having success on NFL Sundays, then we're probably having success, too. So, it's competitive, but it's not zero sum. There is the potential for there to be a rising tide that lifts everybody's company.” Mulvihill also discusses the creation of Big Noon Saturday and admits that “for some time we were putting our best college football games on in primetime, and we were getting beaten pretty badly. The reality is that ABC has owned that real estate for a long time, and we weren't having much success going head to head. … I think as TV programmers what you're often trying to do, especially in sports, is not come up with an entirely new idea, it's to just recognize something that is already showing signs of working and just lean further into that. That’s what Caitlin Clark was this year. Caitlin Clark was just recognizing that something was doing pretty well on Big Ten Network then elevating it to broadcast then elevating it to broadcast Primetime and just creating momentum by identifying something that was working and then amplifying it.” (link)

Baylor President Linda Livingstone addressed the media alongside Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark & provided insights about how the Bears view revenue sharing with student-athletes via House: “We can begin to plan for what we need to do internally as institutions and what the conference needs to do going forward that will allow us to function in that new world. [...] You’ve got to figure out where it’s coming from. That’s probably the biggest question that needs to be answered in a short window of time. We have 12 to 14 months before figuring out what we’re doing in the first year of allocation. Also, determining how you’re going to allocate that money and how you choose to distribute it between the different sports and between your male and female athletes because there’s uncertainty around Title IX.” (link)

Texas A&M President Mark Welsh chimes in on the financial situation in College Station amid a shifting college athletics marketplace: “The balance is interesting, because you’ve got around 600 intercollegiate athletes (at A&M), and we’ve got another 77,000 students on campus. So, you’re not going to do anything on the athletics side of the house with your greater budget that is going to destroy anything on the rest of campus — that’s just not going to happen. The key is making sure that your athletic department budget and the revenue streams associated with it are growing and your costs are under control, so you don’t have a (negative) impact on the rest of the university, and you continue to succeed and hopefully even thrive in the future on the athletics side.” On how the Aggies could pay for the annual House settlement: “Revenue streams will help with that, and reducing costs will help with that, and thinking realistically about the future and where we spend money and how we spend money will help with that. We’ve just got to use common sense as the first standard, and go from there.” (link)
|
Florida AD Scott Stricklin discusses how the Gators will analyze budget & staffing considerations in light of the House outcome: “They’re going to be hard decisions, but we’re all going to rip open, do a total autopsy of every single part of our program. [...] If you look at it just from a revenue place, by having another coach, another analyst, does it grow our revenue number? I don’t think it does. [...] Everyone has really valid points in the conversation, but how we’ve done things in the past we might have to change how we’ve done it.” (link)

Washington State Interim AD Anne McCoy reviews her leadership tenure thus far in Pullman, plus how the Cougars are preparing for an unclear future: “I’m eternally optimistic, but at the end of the day, this past year was hard, and it seemed like there was one thing after another. Now we feel like we are a little more in control of how we are responding and reacting. We’re resilient as a university and as Cougar Nation. [...] I think right now, it is important for WSU to be patient, to be excited about where we are at, and to really wait and see what different paths or opportunities may be out there. Where we may ultimately be in the future may be a path that we are unaware of right now.” (link)

The addition of premium seating at Wisconsin’s Kohl Center will displace some season ticket holders for men’s basketball games. The school began contacting those impacted this week. Per Badgers communication, “new seats for affected seat holders who don't want to pay for the premium space will be assigned based on the buyer's lifetime giving amount to the athletic department as of the end of May.” The new premium spaces include access to a club space with all-inclusive food and nonalcoholic beverages and a cash bar. The cost starts at $6K per season for MBB and $1,750 per season for men's hockey, with the priority going to donors who make additional capital project contributions. By comparison, lower-level season tickets for MBB games in 2023-24 cost $558 plus a minimum contribution of $300 per seat in the middle three sections. Longtime season ticket holder Jerry Metzger: “Between the NIL, the portal, the seeming indifference to the fans by the UW athletic department, maybe it's just time to pull the plug. You feel like you've exhibited loyalty to the university for a long time and that loyalty is not being reciprocated. But it is what it is.” (link)

Filmmaker Mike Nicoll joins the Front Office Sports Today podcast to discuss his new documentary, The Spoils, which takes a look at the inner workings of AAU basketball. Nicoll explains there is a misconception that AAU, college and the NBA operate in silos, “but they’re all interconnected pieces like Lego pieces of the same broader system. So, a deeper understanding of the way that the NBA actually operates requires that layered connection because I always like to describe AAU as the escalator to the NBA. And I think especially today almost everything you see about the way the NBA operates is informed by the incentives that are established on the grassroots level.” Given the interconnectedness of the basketball ecosystem and the “ripple effects up” from grassroots to the NBA, Nicoll explains it’s important to know who’s running AAU. “And the reality is the shoe companies are the ones that bankroll this system. So, when we’re talking about what it's designed to produce, it's designed to identify, anoint and ultimately monetize the next LeBron, the next Superstar. Again, if you're coming at it from that system operation standpoint, that's very different than optimizing for player development [or] what's best for these families and these players, [and] you know, this might seem like an old fashioned notion, but what’s best for the spirit or soul of the game. But the reality is when you have these corporations with their commercial interests, the product that gets spat out on the other side is very informed by why it exists in the first place.” Nicoll goes on to say that it’s “not even clear to me the system produces the best players” and posits many of the best players in the NBA today are foreign, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embid and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. “Whether or not the developmental system we’ve cultivated actually yields the best players is an open question.” Lots more. OneTeam Partners CEO Sean Sansiveri observes in an SBJ op-ed that while the popularity of women’s sports surges, the licensing world has struggled to keep pace. “While manufacturers are showing signs of improvement, retailers continue to lag, making it difficult for fans to find readily available, reasonably priced products of their favorite players. This issue extends beyond the WNBA to other women’s sports, where products are often overpriced, sold out, or delayed in shipping – issues not as prevalent in men’s sports. Ironically, or not, this same issue was illustrated during the equal pay dispute by the lack of availability of the USWNT jersey during the 2019 Women’s World Cup. … The success of the Women’s World Cup, along with the WNBA and NWSL, underscore the soaring appeal and market strength of women athletes. Yet, the limited availability of merchandise reveals a glaring oversight in fully harnessing the commercial power of women’s sports. Companies hesitant to invest in and promote women’s licensed products are missing out on a passionate and growing fan base, perpetuating outdated myths and dynamics that have held women’s sports back for decades.” Sansiveri calls for the licensing industry to “go beyond mere participation and lead the paradigm shift. Let this be the era where we consistently champion the names on the back of the jerseys, celebrating women athletes not only during peak viewership moments but as an ongoing commitment. This isn’t just a call for equality; it’s a strategic investment in sustainable growth, profitability, and lasting engagement in the sports industry.” (link)
