Sports Business Journal’s Ben Portnoy gets more viewpoints from industry leaders on what the House settlement could mean for the future of college athletics. Texas AD Chris Del Conte: “The House settlement [affects] the NCAA and what they do and we’re looking at, ‘what are the ramifications moving forward?’ Because, to me, House is taken care of through [the NCAA]. What does it look like? We don’t know. There’s so many unknowns. It’s one of those things, it’s hard to speculate until the details have been ironed out.” Interesting comment from an unnamed source: “People had a really good excuse during COVID to [cut sports] because you’re $30-$40 million short, and [people] got sued and had to reinstitute programs. I don’t think you’re going to see that. What I think you’re going to see is the amount of food that we were giving to athletes, because they didn’t have money to eat, well, now they do. We’re cutting that. … The student-athlete feel-good stuff that we did for recruiting advantage, yeah, we’re not doing that anymore.” More. (link)

Florida State AD Michael Alford spoke to WESH’s Daren Stoltzfus before yesterday’s NCAA Baseball Regional action in Tallahassee on the Seminoles’ marketplace positioning: “We’ve evaluated this coming. You’ve seen some of the changes we’ve made and some of the questions we’ve asked over the last few years because we saw the collegiate landscape changing. We’re forecasting it continuing to change. So, it’s really about preparing ourselves so we can contend for those national championships, so we can provide the resources necessary to have the best student-athlete experience possible and give them the resources to play for conference and national championships. That’s what Florida State is about, that’s our standard.” Alford goes on to reiterate that his relationship with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips is “wonderful,” describes the interaction with other league ADs as “very professional.” (link)

More from Washington State interim AD Anne McCoy, including a potential timeline for the hire of a new permanent leader in Pullman: “I think President Schulz has talked about maybe by the fall, having the next steps in place or a decision. I think right now, my focus has been only on being the interim athletic director and not being a candidate for the athletic director position, if that makes sense.” On a number of afternoon football kickoff times for the upcoming season: “That, I think, is going to be absolutely huge. I think (there are) two pieces to that. I think the ability to have as many of our home games times set in advance is really important for our fans to be able to plan and travel and know what to expect. I think the fact that many of them are going to be earlier day games will be really beneficial, because that works in every time zone. And I think it’s, to some degree, people’s vision of a more traditional college football Saturday. I think Friday night games are fun and Saturday evening games are fun. But I don’t think people want a whole season of them if they can avoid it. So I think it’ll be really beneficial and good in the long run, very much so.” (link)

Congratulations to Texas for capturing the 2024 NCAA Rowing national championship, its third in program history and in the past four years. The Longhorns racked up 130 points to edge out runner-up/defending champion Stanford (127 points). (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown as the pair cover ground on a number of management & leadership topics. Johnson on surprises as a first-time AD: “Unfortunately, in my two-plus years, I’m on my third president. So handling the transition of leadership. The sudden and tragic passing of late president JoAnne Epps, but making sure we kept moving, which is something that she would have wanted having been a Faculty Athletic Rep for 12 years during her time on campus. [...] We had to keep moving. But, it’s a reminder, life is like a river, it keeps flowing. So, having to lead during that period, it was tough, but 500 student-athletes are depending on you to continue leading.” Lots more from Johnson. (link)

A year ago, Learfield announced the launch of an intercollegiate rodeo division, anchored by the programs at Wyoming, Cal Poly and Montana State. Noting the hit TV series Yellowstone and 1883, Learfield College Rodeo VP/GM Brad Poe: “Rodeo is as popular as ever. There is a romance to this space (and a) lot of elements, culturally, that have increased the popularity of the sport. Our end is driven in a few ways: One is to grow upon and be supportive of our partner institutions, serving our sponsors and schools. We have those relationships, we have all that in place, we have resources at Learfield—a professional sales team—to elevate the sport and increase revenue while providing championship experience.” Most of the deals are structured as their own distinct contract, or as an addendum to an existing Learfield MMR agreement. Montana State and Idaho State, for example, will each get $35K from Learfield next year plus half of any sales above $70K. Sportico’s Daniel Libit adds context, “Montana State is among the few programs that exist under the umbrella of an athletic department. In the fiscal year, the team brought in $965,092 of revenue, while spending a little bit more, $968,262.” To date, Learfield has signed rodeo-specific sales representation agreements with 10 of its existing school partners, in addition to one region, with the hopes of securing another eight to 10 schools by the end of year. The goal, Poe says, is 40 teams, “and then we’ll see what the landscape looks like.” More from Libit. (link)

The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna praises the advanced scheduling by Conference USA, noting three of the schools in the league (FIU, Jacksonville State and Sam Houston) have confirmed kick times for all 12 of their football games already, and every school knows at least 10 start times. Comparatively, the 134 FBS schools have an average of 5.28 game times confirmed for the fall. Fortuna: “They might not make Big Ten money in that part of the country. But the league sure is serving its paying audience well.” More behind his paywall. (link)

Retiring Coastal Carolina Baseball HC Gary Gilmore sounded off on the current state of college athletics after the Chants were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Clemson: “There’s not a level playing field. It’s ridiculous. As much as I’m gonna miss the kids, and I’m gonna miss the heck out of them, dealing with that mess [NIL], I’m telling you right now, the fact that there are teams in college baseball giving $2M+ of NIL money away, I mean c’mon man. A real system would be one where they get a little bit of money, but then they put money in trusts so you don’t have the horror stories you see in the NFL and different places. … There has to be a better way. It’s not just who can raise the most money and give it away. Professional sports would go in the toilet in a hurry if we used this system.” More. (link)

WSC Sports is introducing three new AI-powered offerings to its product suite: Around the Game, In-App Stories, and Discovery Network. The Around the Game product “expands the company’s AI capabilities from in-game content to indexing and automating every aspect of the game, including fan reactions, player arrivals, sponsor logos, interviews, press conferences, and studio shows,” per Sports Video Group, which adds the In-App Stories product allows sports organizations to insert a vertical video experience within owned and operated digital platforms, where fans can engage with content in a similar way to popular social media platforms. Additionally, Discovery Network increases rights holders’ content exposure by reaching fans on pre-agreed third-party sports properties. WSC Co-Founder/CEO Daniel Shichman: “We see a future where sports fans get only the content they want – content that is of personal interest to them, content that our technology helps them discover, and content that will deepen relationships between fans and sports entities on a one-to-one level. With the launch of three new solutions, the inspiration for our new tagline, ‘Fuel the Fandom,’ we are transitioning to a full AI content solution, helping our clients provide the best personalized content experience to sports fans across all platforms while generating new revenue streams.” (link)

CollegeAD has contract extension terms for West Virginia AD Wren Baker: Two-year extension that could keep him in Morgantown through the 2030 calendar year, base pay moves up to $1.3M starting January 1 of next year with annual $100K increases thereafter. Retention bonuses: $150K on July 1 of this year, then $250K on the same date in 2026 & 2028, $500K on July 1 of 2030. (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle on the challenges of leading & managing amid such rapid industry change: “Seven, eight months ago, I couldn't even talk to you about Dinkytown Athletes. Now we can talk about it and work with them on fundraising and programming. When I do donor dinners it's talking about NIL. Right now we're chasing ghosts and that makes it really hard to manage.” St. Thomas AD Phil Esten adds perspective: “I think particularly with these young people coming out of COVID, they have had different experiences. I think the best leaders try to meet employees where they're at, and the best coaches try to meet their student-athletes where they're at. We don't even know where they're at.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner attempts to look into the future of the Pac-12 & Mountain West, and sets some expectations of how consolidation may go down: “Pac-12 only: 65 percent; MW only: 30 percent; Pac-12 and MW: 5 percent. It’s difficult to envision a scenario in which competing conferences across the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones, both at the Group of Five level, would serve the interests of all the schools involved. There just aren’t enough schools to support two leagues. Baked into our calculation is the underlying desire to keep the Pac-12 alive. [...] Before any of that happens, however, Washington State and Oregon State will 1) make every effort to gain admittance to either the Big 12 or ACC or 2) provide a landing spot for Cal and Stanford if the ACC dissolves in the next 12-18 months.” (link)

Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins believes the “problem with college sports isn’t the athletes. It’s the schools.” She goes on: “The college athlete isn’t the one who needs reminding he or she is a student. It’s the colleges that forgot — they’re the ones that ran so profiteeringly amok that they turned athletes into labor law case studies. Once you make that simple thought reversal, the NCAA’s mess becomes easier to sort out. It’s going to take an act of Congress to fix it, you bet. But what needs regulating is the conduct of the schools, not the kids.” Further, Jenkins believes the litany of antitrust casts and legislative reform bills in headlines of late all “slightly miss the mark because they wrongly focus on athlete behaviors rather than institutional ones.” Jenkins lauds insight from former UC Davis AD Kevin Blue, who in his open letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker states: “From a behavioral economics perspective, financial decision-making in college sports has been perfectly rational within the structures of the current system. They have chased their own competitive self-interest, the natural result of what he calls an ‘eat-everything-you-can-possibly-kill system.’” Jenkins sums up her stance: “Alabama should have to eat its own rotting meal, not shove it down Seton Hall’s throat.” Lots more. Interesting read from Sports Illustrated on how NIL may systematically impact the development of young talent in European leagues. Octagon Basketball Europe Senior Director David Carro Funes: “A player like Luka Doncic would never play for Real Madrid if NIL existed. For a player that good, the amount of money an American college could offer him would be much more lucrative than any EuroLeague contract at that age. It is a widespread practice in Europe that talented players are signed to long-term youth contracts that, and, for players like Luka, who is capable of playing on the first team before age 18, make a tiny fraction of what older players command.” Barcelona Basketball Sporting Director Mario Fernandez: “Before [NIL], the chance of continuing basketball and personal development at US College was already an attractive option, but now the appearance of economic figures that are completely unattainable in the European sports paradigm makes going to college almost an obsession for most European players. [...] [Players] are driven not only by their own ambitions but also by those of their agents, who, motivated by the possibility of monetizing their athletes at an absolutely unimaginable age/price range not long ago, push them [to America] and constrain the development system in Europe.” More from Noah Henderson. The Athletic’s Chris Vannini pens on how Dallas Baptist has become an “unlikely perennial contender” in college baseball. The Patriots are one of just five programs to reach the NCAA tournament in each of the last 10 seasons, joining Vanderbilt, Florida, LSU and Oklahoma State. “With state-of-the-art facilities and a long list of MLB Draft picks — 73 in the last 16 years — Dallas Baptist has carried itself like a top-level college baseball program since it moved up to D-I in 2004. The Patriots haven’t had a losing season since 1978. Nobody involved with the program knows anything but winning. Their 44 wins this season are third-most in the country.” DBU HC Dan Heefner on spotting talented players and coaching ‘em up: “A lot of people are successful just on recruiting — get the best players you can and let them go. For us to compete, we’ve got to develop them. They come in at this (level) and we pour into them every day. By the time the season rolls around, they’re a different player.” Baseball America writer Teddy Cahill: “They’ve invested in a way a lot of mid-major programs don’t. … We’re at the point where it’s not like they’re a mid-major program. It’s more like, of course they’re good.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel answers a mailbag question about why Miami (FL) isn’t making a public push to join the SEC or Big Ten and points out it’s “perhaps because the program doesn’t have much to beat its chest out about these days. Here’s a wild one for you: Miami has not had one top-10 season since it joined the conference in 2004. [Florida State] and Clemson have done so a combined 12 times over the same span. But also, if you’re Miami, why waste the time/money/energy? Either FSU/Clemson find a way out of the [ACC’s] Grant of Rights, at which point anyone can, or if they don’t, those schools spent all the billable hours to find out. But in the event the ACC does implode, yes, Miami would be very attractive to the Big Ten. Starting with the fact it’s a top-75 university and recently anointed AAU member. It has a strong overall athletic department, regardless of where football currently sits. Even today, Miami football remains a decent TV brand. And every Big Ten school recruits in South Florida.” Mandel also notes that FSU is not an AAU member, and all 18 B1G members were AAU members at the time of their invitation. Nebraska has since lost its spot. (link)

College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Executive Director Samantha Barany joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle for a conversation about fortifying Olympic sports, the growth and projection of swimming and diving leading up to the 2024 Olympics and more. Barany cites the Sun Belt’s addition of swimming and diving as an example of the sport’s upward trajectory and adds: “I think we can find an opportunity to capture in an Olympic year the excitement that swimming and diving brings. The NCAA Division I Championship is the fastest meet in the world bar none because we have such a special system here where we have the best athletes both domestically and internationally come into the NCAA to train and compete and they do it at the NCAA. And every year the NCAA championship is full of world record holders and Olympic gold medalists, and finding an opportunity to capitalize on that, finding the right date for our championship, the right place for our championship to be able to highlight those student-athletes in the sport is going to be a really important piece of the work that we're doing.” More on Connect. Fox Sports President of Insight and Analytics Michael Mulvihill joins The Joel Klatt Show to talk about how the NFL and college football TV schedules are constructed and points out that while there is obviously competition between networks, “I think we do root for each other’s success. We want to be number one, we want to have the best ratings story of any network, but we want the entire marketplace to do well, too. Our fortunes are very much intertwined and so if CBS and NBC are having success with The Big Ten, that probably means we're having success with The Big Ten. If CBS and NBC are having success on NFL Sundays, then we're probably having success, too. So, it's competitive, but it's not zero sum. There is the potential for there to be a rising tide that lifts everybody's company.” Mulvihill also discusses the creation of Big Noon Saturday and admits that “for some time we were putting our best college football games on in primetime, and we were getting beaten pretty badly. The reality is that ABC has owned that real estate for a long time, and we weren't having much success going head to head. … I think as TV programmers what you're often trying to do, especially in sports, is not come up with an entirely new idea, it's to just recognize something that is already showing signs of working and just lean further into that. That’s what Caitlin Clark was this year. Caitlin Clark was just recognizing that something was doing pretty well on Big Ten Network then elevating it to broadcast then elevating it to broadcast Primetime and just creating momentum by identifying something that was working and then amplifying it.” (link)
