Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek covers a bunch of ground with WholeHogSports’ Christina Long. On the House settlement: “It will transform how we operate. It will transform the opportunities for young men and women, both positively and negatively. Student-athletes that are able to participate will have many more benefits that will be great, but there'll be less that will have the ability to participate because the opportunities are going to diminish in some of those areas to pay for those that will be on rosters. [...] It’s going to be inherent on all of us on our campuses to really look hard at where those expenses are. What are the things that are truly fat that we can do without?” What does Yurachek think the future holds for collectives? “Too early to tell, I think, where collectives go from here, and I think a lot of that has to do with what happens with the Title IX application of this. If you follow the spirit of the law and it's 50/50 [between men and women], then there will probably be a need for collectives and all of our campus communities to supplement additionally what football and basketball players may be receiving.” Also of note: “We're not going to increase our debt service model right now. Until we can raise the money to really pay cash for those facilities, we're not going to add more debt to our bottom line until we really figure this out.” (link)
|
AAC leaders also provide perspectives on the House settlement. Outgoing Commissioner Mike Aresco: “We don't know what we bought. What kind of antitrust protection do you have when there's a cap? Is Congress going to help us? I don't know that they necessarily will. The other issue is that we didn't collectively bargain with anyone, so if someone attacks the cap, can we defend? I hope we can.” Outgoing Tulsa AD Rick Dickson: “It squarely puts the light on the group that's driving the bus at the [Autonomy 4] level, and really, you could probably refer to them as the A2. As a guy that's going out the door in 30 days, that's a lot of the root of what the majority of us are dealing with in conferences like this. It's all being tilted overwhelmingly towards two entities in a way that's hard to argue is a benefit for all.” North Texas AD Jared Mosley: “I do think the one thing that we have to do is draw a line in the sand and continue to fight for access. Having opportunities in the CFP, having opportunities for our teams to compete in March Madness and other championships. As long as we have that, we can figure out within our world that we live in how to best do that and put people in the best possible position to have success.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White talks about the continued importance of fans & the fan experience in Knoxville: “They’re more important than ever. The passion of fans is what makes college sports special. The connection to the university and in our case, the state-wide pride is a big deal. Professional sports don’t have that strong community that we’re seeing here. It’s our job to find ways to build an awesome experience for our fans to interact with our teams and coaches in different ways. Ultimately, you have to generate revenue because there has never been a time in the history of college sports where revenue has such an impact.” (link)

TCU AD Jeremiah Donati shoots down reports that the Horned Frogs have inked a deal with Amazon for the ecommerce giant to appear on all TCU jerseys. Per the report: “The deal was spearheaded by the brother of Amazon founder and TCU alumni, Mark Bezos.” (link)

USA Today’s Blake Toppmeyer reads between the lines on SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s comments regarding expansion, which were: “We respect that there are agreements and situations that prevent a lot of movement, so our focus has been on our 16, but, I pay attention.” Toppmeyer: “He didn’t say the SEC will stand firm at 16 in perpetuity or that the conference is disinterested in further expansion. That’s notable. If brands the SEC might privately desire become available, I expect the conference to pounce – just as the SEC did with Oklahoma and Texas. […] Houses are divided between Florida and FSU, too. And Clemson and South Carolina. For now, those houses are split between the SEC and ACC. But, what school wouldn’t prefer to be in the SEC (or the Big Ten)? And, if presented with another tempting expansion opportunity, couldn’t the SEC find room for a couple more school pennants on its pinwheel?” (link)

More details on Kansas AD Travis Goff’s new deal, which includes an additional car at his disposal and comes with up to $50K a year in private jet flights for his personal use via a Wheels Up membership. Jayhawks Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self and Football HC Lance Leipold are the only other employees on campus to have the same air travel benefit. The new contract also calls for eight retention bonuses, the first of which, for $100K, is owed to him tomorrow. Additional ticket packages and steeper exit fees are now in the mix. If Goff is fired in either 2025 or 2026 he would be owed $5M. The amount falls to $4M in 2027 and to $2M in 2030. Should he depart on his own, his exit fees follow the same schedule. (link)

According to court documents, on May 22 the Pac-12 reached a settlement with former Pac-12 Networks President Mark Shuken and former CFO Brent Willman who were dismissed in January 2023 for failing to properly report millions of dollars in overpayments by Comcast to the Pac-12 Networks over a 10-year span. The two former staffers, who claim they told former league boss Larry Scott of the issue but were told to keep quiet, brought a wrongful termination lawsuit against the conference in the aftermath of their termination. The original lawsuit described damages “in amounts to be established at trial and believed to be in excess of $2 million.” Binding agreement has not been formalized and a case management conference is scheduled for June 26. New on Connect: UT Arlington AD Jon Fagg sits down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer to dive into his approach to NIL at UTA while competing in a crowded marketplace. Fagg also talks about how now more than ever it’s beneficial for an AD to have a background in compliance and how he administers compliance education to coaches, staff and student-athletes. Fagg asserts those with compliance backgrounds make the best possible AD candidates and explains: “Development people, they have metrics that can be measured, it's really straightforward to figure out what their impact is. But they make their living saying yes. That’s what they do, they say yes to people for a living. Being an AD is about saying no. You say no for a living. Compliance people, we say no for a living and do it in a manner that makes people want to come back and get another one. … We're very relational even though people often say and think of it as being transactional because it's a rule, it's a yes or no. It’s not yes or no. It’s gray, it's nuanced, and so I love my background. It’s useful. I use it every day, every second. I'm super proud of my background.” (link)

Collins College of Professional Studies, unveiled a new academic minor entitled Name, Image, and Likeness in Sport. Formerly named Sports Leadership & Branding, the minor was initially launched in January 2021 with the St. John's UNLIMITED program to offer students a core curriculum in NIL, finance, marketing, social media and law. The 15-credit minor is available to both student-athletes and the general student undergrad population. (link)

While the new terms have not been made public, Skydance Media has submitted a “sweetened offer” for a merger with Paramount, per the Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Lauren Thomas. Paramount’s directors are expected to review the new offer, which is “more favorable to both Paramount’s voting and nonvoting shareholders,” shortly. If Paramount’s committee of directors recommends the deal, it will be up to controlling shareholder Shari Redstone to decide if she wants to pursue the merger. Lest we forget the $26B nonbinding offer submitted by PE firm Apollo Global Management and Sony Pictures earlier this month. (link)

President Amy Parsons: “I've worked closely with John during his time as interim AD and am confident that he has the vision, experience and skills necessary to lead Ram Athletics into the future. This Old House…
+ USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken has approved a “stay of all action in the House case ‘pending the Court’s ruling on Plaintiffs’ motion to preliminarily approve the settlement between Plaintiffs and Defendant.’” (link); Berkowitz adds that Judge Wilken has approved a stay in the Hubbard case as well and notes that per court filings “Parties ‘anticipate’ settlement motion will be filed within 30 days from today, ‘but in any event no later than’ 45 days from today. Settlement is to cover House, Hubbard and Carter cases.” (link, link)
+ Alabama AD Greg Byrne continues to say cutting sport programs will be a last resort for the Crimson Tide: “You’ve seen Loyola Marymount, you’ve seen a couple of other schools since COVID who had reduced sports but obviously that would be the last thing we want to do. [...] One of the things that frustrated me from reading the things I read so far was when I read about certain figures out there comparing what we do to professional leagues. They never talk about how professional leagues have one team. We have 21. It never gets mentioned.” However, Byrne also notes: “We all have a responsibility, as much as people think there’s unlimited money, there’s not. We have to make financial decisions.” (link)
+ Villanova AD Mark Jackson echoes Byrne: “The idea of the elimination of sports has not come up. It’s not a concern of ours right now. Where college athletics goes and the idea of sports that generate revenue and those that don’t is the bigger question and how everybody looks at the distribution of revenues and how they may impact sports — those are real questions. [...] We’re looking at every possible scenario and modeling out multiple platforms and how we’re going to navigate this. We want to be prepared for whatever happens next.” (link)
+ Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “Even some of the ideas that we've thrown out on the table which would be innovative and seem to be a legally-supported way going forward, we found, eh, better re-think that one. This is all plowing new ground. We're cautious about trying to paint everything with what we know now and just be patient enough to build it the way it should be in the long run.” (link)
+ Ole Miss AD Keith Carter: “It’s going to be a hodgepodge of finding new revenues and eliminating some expenses. It’s going to be definitely different at each institution and how they do it.” (link)
+ Saint Joseph's AD Jill Bodensteiner: “It requires immediate planning on where that lost revenue or other payments that we’re going to have to contribute to the settlement will come from. I am not an expert on the numbers, but am I disappointed and angry at the funding for that back pay? Yes. I think it unfairly hurts schools like those in the Atlantic 10 and similar conferences. It’s really disproportionately hurting schools that don’t sponsor football because we’re funding football and I think it’s unfair. Patently unfair. [...] I’m seeing other commenters say there’s no way people will carry beyond the minimum [number of sports] required for Division I [16 sports for FBS, 14 for others]. People will look to go down to the minimum. We haven’t had those conversations at St. Joe’s yet.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ The NCAA has reached a settlement with the Justice Department that will effectively allow for unlimited student-athlete transferring without penalty. (link); The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel adds: “Interesting part of the settlement. Athletes who had to sit out a year under the old transfer rules and are still in college will get that year of eligibility restored and could come back next year.” (link)
+ The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker stays on top of the ACC-Florida State proceedings & here is the latest key development: “The three power conferences have joined with the Atlantic Coast Conference in urging a Tallahassee court to protect the ACC’s TV deals with ESPN. [...] The ACC, SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 argued in Leon County Circuit Court records that the documents must remain confidential to protect trade secrets.” More: “ESPN went even farther in its brief. The network said releasing its contracts would allow competitors to ‘gain a leg up on ESPN in the next round of negotiations with rightsholders.’ Florida would be harmed, its filing said, because ESPN and other networks might balk at doing business with state schools if their contracts could become public.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports “the NCAA's motion to dismiss Reggie Bush's defamation case was denied in an Indiana court yesterday.” (link)

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel is expected to discuss legislative changes next month that would allow on-field sponsorships for football, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes this, along with a potential ninth SEC conference game, are opportunities to generate new revenue to offset what will be shared with student-athletes. Dellenger also believes there is the possibility of eventually allowing sponsor logos on jerseys, writing: “field logos on the 25-yard line are expected to fetch at least $1 million annually for an SEC program. Jersey patches could be upward of $5 million per season or more. Prideful of their tradition, it’s unclear if any SEC program would swap their midfield logo for a corporate sponsorship — a risky endeavor but also one with a lucrative end.” Florida AD Scott Stricklin: “I believe the NCAA is going to allow us to put a sponsor logo on the field during the regular season. That's an obvious revenue stream that has not been there in the past. Pro sports are putting patches on jerseys. That doesn't seem like something that's crazy for us to consider these days.” As for an expanded SEC conference slate, Dellenger reports the move “could draw as much as $3 million to $5 million in additional revenue per school.” (link)
|
Asked about the prospect of on-field sponsor logos, Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek: “It's definitely something that I support when you look at ways that we can continue to generate additional revenue dollars. Putting a logo on your field, just not renaming our field. Our field is named Frank Broyles Field. It will always be named that. But to put a logo opposite the SEC logos that generates some additional sponsor revenue, that would be something that I would definitively support.” (link)

Several SEC schools that have beefed up their football schedules in recent years would like to see that acknowledged by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. Specifically, they argue that a 9-3 record should qualify them, and Texas AD Chris Del Conte notes: "[We added] Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Florida, immediately on the schedule. We went Big Ten, Big Ten, SEC, SEC solely based on trying to add value to the home ticket having no clue this was coming down the path." Alabama AD Greg Byrne adds: "If you played a tough schedule, a 9-3 team better be considered. I've heard we're pretty good in football in the Southeastern Conference." Florida AD Scott Stricklin also weighs in: “If all they [selection committee] look at is a shiny win-loss record at the expense of teams that have played good schedules, then people stop playing good non-conference games.” Meanwhile, Commissioner Greg Sankey observes: “There's a weight on the committee that's new…I want to see how the committee processes that. … ‘We have an undefeated team so they're in,' is not the standard. It never was the standard. Obviously that stirred up controversy last year." One person familiar with CFP format discussions earlier this year suggests to CBS’ Dennis Dodd this is an extension of the SEC and Big Ten attempting to secure four AQ bids: “What [those conferences are] basically saying is, 'We don't trust the selection committee. Therefore, we basically want to take away their power.’” Stricklin goes on to point out that “one of the things that is screwed up about college athletics is that all these postseason things are done subjectively. It's one of the great things pro sports has. You don't wake up the day after the regular season ends and wait for somebody to tell you [who's in].” (link)
|
But wait, there’s more from the SEC as The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, Seth Emerson & David Ubben indicate Netflix is closing in on a deal with the league to produce an “immersive documentary” during the 2024-25 season. Think ‘Drive to Survive’ for F1. Which programs will be involved? “Teams will be able to opt in or out, and so far it’s not known which ones are definitely in or out. Georgia, expected to be preseason No. 1 or No. 2 this season, is among those with some interest but hasn’t made a decision yet, a source briefed on the discussions said.” (link)

Unrivaled, the new three-on-three women’s basketball league founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, will offer the “highest average salary in the history of women’s professional sports leagues,” according to Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer. The league has received backing by several new investors, including soccer legends Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, along with former NBA stars including Steve Nash and Carmelo Anthony. The league has already received commitments from 10 WNBA All-Stars and will have 30 players across six teams playing full court, and every player will have a piece of equity in the league. The season will begin play in January 2025 and will run during the WNBA’s offseason. Stewart: “It’s amazing, not only for the salaries to be similar or more than your WNBA salary, but to be able to build brand partnerships that can’t come into the W or the NBA. It’s more than just an initial salary, but showing these companies who you are as a player.” (link)
