Texas AD Chris Del Conte on the rate of change within college athletics: “We’ve lost our voice of what college athletics is about. No one wants to hear that but only 2% of our student-athletes are going to go pro. The rest of them are going to be doctors, lawyers and great productive citizens.” Still, Del Conte accepts the changes that are coming: “I have 21 sports now. We’re funding all 21 sports, giving them incredible opportunities through the educational model. So this landscape, we’re just gonna have to adjust to it. We’ve all been there. We’ll figure it out. It’s just different pressures now.” (link)

Iowa Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives/COO Joe Parker has agreed to a five-year contract with the Hawkeyes, per CollegeAD. Parker will earn a base salary of $315K the first year with increases of $15K each subsequent year. If Parker is still in the role on June 30, 2026, and his overall performance rating is “exceeds expectations” or “outstanding,” he will earn a $50K bonus. Retention bonuses of $25K are available each subsequent year. If Parker terminates the contract before June 30, 2027, he will owe 50% of his base salary for that year. After that date, no buyout would be owed. Should Iowa part ways with Parker without cause anytime before that date, he would be owed the remainder of the salary left on his contract. If he is let go without cause in the final two years of the contract, Parker would be owed the lesser of $500K or his remaining salary. (link)

Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt worries about an expanded College Football Playoff diluting key matchups down the stretch of the regular season: “As soon as we go to 16 (teams), now the games late in the season don’t really matter. Now we get what a college basketball regular season is, which is, let’s face it, unimportant until we get to March Madness. And I want to try to avoid that in college football because one of the things that’s been unique to college football is the importance of the regular season.” However, generally speaking Klatt is a supporter of greater access: “Those values that we get to a singular game, I think that that’s really important. So I like the expansion, I think we needed the expansion because we had limited the definition of success to just a few teams. We had, in the last eight to ten years, reduced the definition of success to only the four teams in the College Football Playoff. That was awful for the sport. And the only thing that pulled us out of that … was the transfer portal and NIL, which then allowed teams to get more veteran and more experienced, which translated to newcomers playing for the national championship.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner compares the maximum audience for Washington State and Oregon State football games through their deal with the CW and Fox with what was available to them via the Pac-12’s media rights deal. In 2023, WSU’s games were available in an aggregate of 685M households for the season. In 2024, that figure increased by 48.2% to 1.015B. OSU’s games in 2023 were available to a total of 825M households throughout the season, and that figure jumps 29.7% to 1.07B in 2024. Wilner acknowledges that maximum audience and actual audience are two very different things and “ultimately, the ratings will serve as judge and jury on the exposure generated by the ‘Pac-2’ schools in their unprecedented journey as a two-team conference. A heaping spoonful of skepticism seems wise. After all, the Cougars and Beavers are replacing high-profile games against Pac-12 opponents with matchups against Mountain West schools — the viewership challenge, in some cases, will be supreme. … But by removing a slew of broadcasts on the low-visibility Pac-12 Networks and adding the reach provided by The CW’s national audience — the network shows ACC games, as well — the Cougars and Beavers have a chance to generate eyeballs and remain relevant.” (link)

Sports Video Group’s Dan Daley examines the potential of wiring college athletes for sound the way many professional leagues do and notes that while the NCAA prohibits this by and large, there may be some wiggle room in football. According to NCAA rules, FBS conferences interested in wearable technologies can submit experimental proposals. So far, Q5X CEO Paul Johnson says that the company has “not yet seen an increase of player audio at the college level that would parallel the increases in professional sports. There continues to be interest expressed in Q5X’s PlayerMics and CoachMics by some colleges, but most of the usage is restricted to practices since the NCAA continues to have very strict guidelines restricting the use of technology, including microphones on players, during games.” However, he notes, some schools are using these wireless systems during practices to create packages for websites and social media. Also: “Some coaches are using PlayerMics on athletes during warmups and practices to capture audio to be reviewed with the players for coaching purposes.” With the growing importance of communication technology in college sports, Riedel Regional Marketing Manager Sara Seidel emphasizes the importance of affordability and ease of use: “Often in college sports, you will see the students running the operations. These students cycle through [during their time at the school], so the equipment has to be intuitive and easy to use, as they may be very new to the idea of comms and the whole production process for sports. Depending on the college, funds for initial purchase and maintenance may not be as high [as for pro teams], and, with inexperienced users, more drops and mishandling may occur, so [the comms systems] have to be able to take a lot of abuse and keep working.” (link)

CNBC’s Alex Sherman joins Front Office Sports Today to discuss the impact a Skydance-Paramount merger would have on sports media and explains that “from the discussions I've had privately, it sounds like [the newly merged company] would be committed to staying in the sports game. Skydance has an existing relationship with the NFL on a number of productions, so that is not a foreign relationship. And from what I'm told, CBS would continue to be a part of their plan. That would be different than the Sony-Apollo offer, where that was sort of contingent on breaking up the company. The reason Shari Redstone has gone this far down the road with Skydance is Skydance, that consortium, has worked really hard to keep the company together. … That’s not to say there won’t be divestment of certain assets – that is part of the plan, I’m told.” (link)

The NBA is closing in on deals with NBC, ESPN and Amazon that would bring in about $76B in media revenue over 11 years, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint, Isabella Simonetti and Amol Sharma. NBC, the WSJ trio reports, is close to an agreement to pay the league an average of $2.5B per season in exchange for rights to around 100 games, with about half airing exclusively on Peacock. Amazon’s $1.8B-a-year package would include regular-season and playoff games, the in-season tournament, and the play-in games. Disney would retain an NBA package and would continue to air the NBA Finals, with payments averaging about $2.6B a year, up from the $1.5B it pays in the current deal. Disney will receive reduced inventory but will be able to air games on its DTC service, which is set to launch in 2025. Notably, Warner Bros. Discovery still has the right to match a rival package, and Flint, et al. point out the league could always “carve out a new package for the company in the final stretch, but its options are limited.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes: “Turner decided they wanted to take a risk with an auction. That made the rights more expensive.” (link)

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes the NBA’s “level of bump in broadcast money surely has gotten the NFL’s attention. Although its existing contracts technically run through 2033, the NFL can pull the plug after the 2029 season. It undoubtedly will. It’s not like the numbers will get worse for 2030 through 2033. The only question is how much better will they be? Throw in the very real possibility of an 18th regular-season game and the ongoing rise of streaming, and the NFL will have more inventory to offer and, most importantly, more suitors than packages.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd profiles House plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who says he has no intentions of stepping down anytime soon. "My life is fine. I don't plan on going anywhere." House co-counsel Steve Berman recalls that "we met not in a friendly way. I filed the Alston case. He filed basically a copycat case in New Jersey. He was very insistent that he knew better than I and the case belonged in New Jersey. I thought it would be a disaster in New Jersey. … I told Jeffrey to buzz off." Eventually, they decided to join forces on the case, and Berman notes: "I think our working together and friendship coalesced during the trial. Jeffrey is a lot of New Yorker. He gesticulates a lot with his hands. He asks the same question over and over again. I'm more of a rifle-shot, soft-spoken person. I think the combination of the two of us, different styles and personalities, was a good match for the judge. We became like brothers." Kessler says he still wonders why the NCAA took Alston all the way to the Supreme Court: "Even if they were advised to consider change they couldn't change because there were so many different economic interests and forces. There were so many people wedded to the system…that the easiest thing to do politically inside the NCAA was nothing." For college sports writ large, Kessler says: "There are lots of people drinking at the trough here. It's time for the athletes to not be so thirsty." And on the House settlement specifically, he tells Dodd: This is not resolving every legal issue they face but it does resolve the antitrust piece that I think has been the most difficult issue for the NCAA over the past 10 years.” (link)

The NCAA “got off easy settling House v. NCAA for more than $2.7B,” according to Coastal Carolina Chair of Athletics Joe Moglia, who writes: “Bankrupting the NCAA would have disbanded the organization’s ineffectual leadership and structure, making way for something that actually serves the needs of athletes and universities. But that’s not what happened. There is a prevailing sense the NCAA is ‘too big to fail’ and that collapse would irrevocably destabilize college athletics. This fear is shortsighted. If the NCAA disappeared tomorrow, it might disrupt a couple seasons, but the Conferences could quickly fill the void. … Does anyone really believe it’s impossible to hold a basketball tournament or a bowl game without the NCAA? Why go to such lengths to protect it? Unfortunately, too many administrators seem to prefer the status quo to leading.” The House settlement, Moglia continues, is tantamount to kicking the can down the road on further lawsuits while the “profound structural problems plaguing college sports remain—an out-of-control NIL marketplace, de facto unlimited free agency on the transfer portal, weak coaching contracts, and a playing field increasingly tilted against smaller programs.” Moglia suggests one option for reforming college sports would be to spin off football and men’s and women’s basketball into Professional Collegiate Athletics (PCA) while the rest of the sports would remain with the NCAA. The PCA would be set up with collective bargaining, binding contracts, direct payment of players, NIL deals, and more. The latter Amateur College Athletics (ACA) would limit compensation to scholarships and direct NIL deals with brands. Lots more. (link)

This year’s Women’s College World Series marks the end of an era that started with the Pac-12’s dominance and signals the “arrival of the SEC Death Star, primed to lord over softball and the WCWS for years to come,” according to ESPN’s Dave Wilson and Jake Trotter. Oklahoma HC Patty Gasso: "The [Pac-]12 started softball, really. It was always UCLA and Arizona. They're the stepping stones that led to other teams. ... The idea of them dissipating the Pac-12 is really hard for me to fathom because of the history of softball. ... I don't know, I'm sentimental over that." Former Arizona HC Mike Candrea admits it’s “gut-wrenching, to be honest. We're living in a world now that's completely different." UCLA softball legend Dot Richardson says the changing of the guard has been in motion for several years now, well before Texas and Oklahoma opted to join the SEC. For example, OU just opened the $48M Love’s Field, which seats 4,200, while UCLA hasn’t renovated its softball stadium, which seats 1,300, since 2005. Richardson: "A Pac-12 coaching staff told me it's not as easy anymore because [recruits] look at facilities, and what do I get? You look at NIL, and what do I get? … You started to see the SEC starting to raise its development and facilities. So a lot of California and Arizona and West Coast athletes started to come east. And they came east because of the commitment to the sport of softball, by facilities as well as staff salaries, coaching staffs and commitment that was being made." Wilson and Trotter note that conference realignment will only make it more difficult, as teams in the erstwhile Pac-12 now also have to sell recruits on playing in leagues spanning the width of the country. Candrea: “To see it come to this point now is really kind of sad.” (link)

Illinois is launching a new per-seat ticketing model for football and men’s basketball through which “each seat will be sold individually, enabling fans to buy more specifically, donor level aside,” per SBJ, which also reports that the Illini worked with Elevate over the last year to analyze data from over 1,500 surveys and 15 hours of focus groups to inform the new model, which will take effect in 2025. Both Memorial Stadium and the State Farm Center will be reseated. Under the new model, 82% of fans who select season tickets in the same or similar locations at Memorial Stadium and State Farm Center will pay the same price or less in 2025. Illini Chief Commercial Officer Tom Moreland: “It’s a transformational change. It’s been a year-long project, an incredible amount of research, analysis and we have to re-seat two venues in the same year to do it. … I think it empowers the fans. And as college athletics changes, we need to empower their fans to have the kinds of experiences they want to have.” (link); Illinois also announces that Memorial Stadium suite owners and 77 Club ticket holders will see no additional charges for food and beverage on game days with a move to an all-inclusive model this football season. Ole Miss’ $30M Oxford-University Stadium expansion and other facility projects are being put on hold, according to Rebels AD Keith Carter, who explains: “It’s an interesting time in college athletics. A lot of uncertainty around the financial piece of it. Where we’re going with the [revenue] share and a lot of different things there. So, we’ve pulled back on a lot of our facilities. Kind of put those on the shelf and press pause. We know we got to maintain great facilities, I think we have great facilities right now. We got to continue to maintain and renovate and do those type of things. But probably the next couple years you won’t see anything major coming out. … The west side of the football stadium, even the baseball stadium project. We’re going to put that on pause, as well, for now, until we figure out where we’re going with all this.” The Rebels will finish work on renovations to the softball stadium, which have been ongoing this year and are expected to be completed in time for the 2025 season. West Georgia will discontinue women’s tennis ahead of the move to DI on July 1. Wolves AD Jason Carmichael: "Changes like this are excruciatingly difficult to implement. We have evaluated our sports portfolio repeatedly over the last few years to ensure we are positioned for success in our current and future contexts. After reviewing numerous sources of information and internal and external perspectives, it became apparent we needed to change our current sports portfolio. We will pause Women's Tennis for now and look to identify additional sports sponsorship opportunities to help support our goal of elevating the department and the overall institution." (link)

The Men's Lacrosse Rules Committee has proposed modifying the video review criteria so coaches can make challenges using the previously approved situations within the criteria at any point in the game, effective for the 2025 season. The committee is also recommending that officials can initiate video review only in the last four minutes of regulation and OT. Officials would be able to initiate video in instances of a fight, flagrant misconduct or unsportsmanlike conduct and whether contact to the head and/or neck took place at any time in the game. All proposals must be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which meets July 17. (link)
