A source tells CBS’ Dennis Dodd the House settlement could be made all but official by early July. "These are the only cases I understand that are on Judge Wilken’s docket. Minnesota AD Mark Coyle talks about navigating the myriad changes in the industry: "We want to embrace this change. We talk a lot about low ego, high output. If we can create an environment where people thrive in that low-ego, high-output mentality, we'll be able to navigate our way through this changing landscape." Coyle also acknowledges going 5-7 was a disappointment in football last season, but he notes HC PJ Fleck has “got a lot of optimism going into this year,” adding: “He's doing a lot of firsts for our program, and it's just a really exciting time to have him here at Minnesota.” On the men’s hoops side, Coyle says he’s proud of what HC Ben Johnson has accomplished: “He's a first-time head coach. If you think about everything we're going through with the transfer portal, with NIL, everything going on in college athletics right now, for him to navigate our program and to do the things we've done is phenomenal, and I think we have a chance to be a top-25 team next year with some of the kids we have returning." Boston College agrees to a 10-year multimedia rights partnership with Van Wagner. Eagles AD Blake James: “They've had a lot of success in creating business-to-business relationships through campus-wide partnerships that ultimately benefit athletics. Their experience in creating those partnerships on different campuses was something that stood out to me.” Van Wagner College President Mike Palisi on signing the company’s first Power 4 client: “We're growing, but we're going to be really mindful and thoughtful about how we grow. I have no interest in being the biggest. I just have interest in being the best and delivering what we promised.” (link)

D1.ticker has launched CollegeSports.jobs, a full-scale jobs board to complement its industry-leading position of distributing job opportunities directly to the inboxes of potential candidates via its family of widely-read industry media publications and platforms (D1.ticker, D2.ticker, D3.ticker, NAIA.ticker, Coaches.wire and Collegiate Sports Connect). D1.ticker Founder Matt Roberts: “The best part for athletic departments and sports organizations is there’s no added cost for what’s now double the value. For years we’ve said to schools, ‘Why make potential administrative candidates work to find your openings when we already have a distribution vehicle with engaged readership of potential candidates? Put your openings in the same space where potential candidates already spend time every single day. Plus, we can target subscribers by area of expertise, as well.’ That strategy is quite logical and has worked very nicely for hundreds of athletic departments. Then last year we added Coaches.wire, which is read weekly by tens of thousands of college coaches around the industry, and created the same solution for reaching potential coaching candidates. However, we knew the experience for the active job seeker wasn’t as smooth as it should be. CollegeSports.jobs changes that. All jobs - administrative and coaching jobs - posted with CollegeSports.jobs will still be distributed through our family of publications, but will also get greater branding and visibility on the new site, plus will be fully indexed by the major search engines, providing even greater discoverability. This is an obvious step for our portfolio and couldn’t have been executed without the help of our friends at WMT. We’re not done creating even more solutions in the human talent space. Helping athletic departments and sports organizations develop the deepest and most diverse pool of candidates is crucial for success. People win championships. Stay tuned!” (link)

Coach Auriemma has dedicated over half of his life to UConn and our women's basketball program and will undoubtedly be known as one of the greatest collegiate coaches of all time. LSU Senior Assoc. AD for Health and Wellness Shelly Mullenix and Michigan State Director of Student-Athlete Wellness Molly McQueary participate in a roundtable discussion with AthleticDirectorU about how athletic departments can provide coordinated mental health care for student-athletes. McQueary contends that providing such care is an increasingly vital part of supporting student-athletes. “Transitioning out of the structured environment of collegiate athletics poses numerous challenges, including loss of identity and adapting to life after sports, often compounded by the pressures of career transitions. Research underscores that former athletes may face elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues compared to the general population, stemming from factors such as injuries and the abrupt end of their athletic careers.” Mullenix notes there have been “inflection points” that have spurred LSU to provide post-career mental health resources to student-athletes. “We have seen tragic evidence of self-harm, for example, and other ways of acting out. Larger social issues and events also affect students on campus. But this movement has been building for some time. … Knowing that these athletes were more than just their sport, it seemed unfair to make them fend for themselves with inadequate resources, facing barriers to adequate healthcare, or having limited trust in systems.” McQueary notes that one of the most compelling aspects of MSU’s program “has been witnessing our first cohort of student-athletes transition out of our care while choosing to continue their therapeutic work. We anticipate that many of our current student-athletes will utilize this service after they graduate.” Lots more. (link)

Two Circles is set to launch its Two Circles College vertical, which SBJ’s Ben Portnoy explains, will “create marketing agencies for the schools and staff them in those markets,” thereby helping student-athletes “activate on marketing campaigns. It would also support the athlete and school throughout the entire NIL activation process through understanding fair market value and more.” Portnoy notes that Opendorse will support the venture with “back-end tech that allows for easy access for brands and athletes to connect on potential marketing deals.” Two Circles College EVP Nick Garner: “Everything since 2021 has been very haphazard in a sense. Schools have had collectives that they’ve not had to think too much about. ... But really the idea now is that schools can have ownership. It's an opportunity for them to truly create and, for us, to engage with the university and help them develop that best-in-class, sustainable NIL program they're going to need for years to come.” (link)

On3 surveyed 36 blue-chip football recruits for the class of 2025, 33 of whom listed the amount of money they were seeking. On3’s Pete Nakos notes the “majority of desired financial packages ranged from $200K to $600K per year, with the median at $400K. The lowest recorded NIL offer wanted was $33K. More than 20 of the athletes asked to fill out the survey were rated as five-star recruits. Notably, 22 recruits provided details for the amount of money they desired and their largest NIL package to date. In a surprising outcome, 12 said they were content with taking less money than their largest NIL offer, which is 54% percent of the pool who answered both questions.” The survey also found that the largest offer recorded was over $1.5M and could max out just under $3M. Another respondent indicated their most lucrative offer was for $2M. Respondents also repeatedly mentioned a fear of being lied to as among their biggest worries with NIL, with one recruit writing, simply: “Jaden Rashada.” (link)

The Florida High School Athletic Association voted to approve NIL deals for athletes, effective with the 2024-25 season. Board member Sara Bayliss: “It’s not pay-for-performance, per se. But I think we’re trying to avoid what’s happened on the collegiate side. I don’t think it will be used widely, but our student-athletes should be compensated as long as it falls between the lines and doesn’t become a recruiting problem. If it does, we’ll deal with it.” A provision forbids schools from using NIL as an enticement for students to attend their program, and prohibits students from securing an NIL deal after an in-season transfer without a good cause exemption from the relevant school district. Students violating the NIL policies would result in a formal warning and the termination of the agreement. A second offense would lead to a one-year suspension. (link); Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner: “Worst part of the new Florida HS NIL bylaw: No agreements can extend beyond an athlete's HS athletic eligibility or graduation date. What if Gatorade wants to sign a Player of the Year to a long-term contract? It would be a violation that could result in sanctions.” (link)

Athletes Unlimited is launching the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, and SBJ’s Chris Smith explains: “The new softball property, which will debut next year, complements AU’s existing softball championship season, which is a player-focused format with rotating team rosters. AUSL will instead be comprised of four set teams playing a 30-game season, aiming to fill a void for a sport that has long lacked a stable and established pro team league.” ESPN is a founding broadcast partner for the new league and will air at least 18 games across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. AU CEO Jon Patricof: “As the sport prepares to return to the Olympics in 2028 amid increasing fan interest at the college and professional levels, now is the time to seize on this positive momentum and expand the sport even further.” (link)

St. Bonaventure selects Le Moyne AD Bob Beretta for the same role. SBU President Jeff Gingerich: "Bob has every characteristic we were seeking in an AD. He's a planner, a builder and a leader, someone who's willing to be collaborative to build a special team through action and accountability with the student-athlete always at the center of everything. The fact that he's an alum is simply a bonus, but having a deep appreciation of our mission and values is an asset that will prove invaluable. … What really impressed me about Bob was the number of innovative, student-focused programs he established at both Army and Le Moyne.” Beretta: "To have the chance to return and serve my alma mater, the institution that transformed me academically, socially and professionally, the place that inculcated all the values I was able to take into my career, is an amazing opportunity. Everything I've done in my life points back to my time in the Enchanted Mountains." (link)

Our student-athletes continue to excel academically, and I am looking forward to sustaining and enhancing our well-established competitive success.” (link)

It’s not a given U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken approves the House settlement, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who explains one potential obstacle is “whether the settlement would too extensively restructure college sports. As some courts have held, a settlement shouldn’t reshape an entire industry.” McCann cites U.S. District Judge Denny Chin’s 2011 rejection of the “Google Book Settlement” which envisioned Google paying for books it had already scanned and for books it would scan but allowing authors and publishers to opt out of scanning. Chin worried such an arrangement would “give Google a significant advantage over competitors” and “reward” Google “for engaging in wholesale copying of copyrighted works without permission.” Chin also “found problematic that approximately 6,800 individuals (mainly authors and writers) opted out of the agreement, and a comment period yielded hundreds of critical comments about the deal. These were large numbers of naysayers and suggested those who would be governed by a so-called resolution regarded it as problematic.” Furthermore, the Department of Justice called the settlement “an attempt to use the class action mechanism to implement forward-looking business arrangements that go far beyond the dispute before the court in this litigation.” Similarly, McCann believes Wilken will ask how the settlement is supposed to bind DI schools who aren’t named in the complaint, and he notes that “she could further wonder whether attorneys negotiating what is tantamount to a CBA on behalf of college athletes is problematic from a labor law perspective.” More from McCann. The Big Ten and SEC have put their calls for securing the top two College Football Playoff spots along with three AQs on hold, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who observes the “10 FBS conferences plus Notre Dame have seemingly agreed to let this season play out under the 12-team format before making any further decisions about structure for 2026 and beyond. Beyond 2026, virtually everything is on the table including possible expansion of the field to 14 and beyond.” Dodd notes that uncertainty around the House settlement, potential further conference realignment, and the formation of collective bargaining units are among the many factors contributing to the delay. On conference realignment: “Why address CFP structure and format when college football as a whole may not be done with realignment. Florida State's dogged effort to get out of the ACC threatens to trigger the next round of consolidation. FSU's departure would diminish, if not cripple, the league. We've already seen the Pac-12 dissolve.” (link)

More from Louisville AD Josh Heird’s sit-down with WDRB’s Eric Crawford in which Heird says he remains optimistic about UL’s place in the ACC: "I'm bullish on the ACC and you may say, ‘Well, don’t you have to be?’ And yeah, maybe this is born out of necessity a little bit. But I don’t think I’m being naïve. I think the ACC is in a really strong position. And I just continually say, if Louisville can continue to be in the third-best conference in the country, we’re in a really good spot. … I think at times, we, fans, lose sight of where the ACC is really. There's a lot of athletic departments that would pay, I mean handsomely, to be in the ACC. As I always kind of refer to it, we live in a pretty good neighborhood. And I think sometimes we all get used to driving into our neighborhood, right? And then we go to another neighborhood that isn't as nice and we realize, ‘We live in a really nice neighborhood.’ And that's what I don't want us, our fans, other members of the ACC, to forget.” With the fund for House settlement damages being calculated based on NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament units, Heird acknowledges that he “kind of caught myself getting upset. And all the smaller school Group of 5 teams are complaining about the amount that they're paying, and saying their percentage is not what they think it should be. But it's like, guys, you wouldn't have any of this basketball revenue, if it wasn't for the NCAA Tournament that, for all intents and purposes, is created by all the schools in the Power 5.” Heird adds that he remains focused on looking ahead: “How do we create stability within this industry and stop getting sued six ways to Sunday? That’s where I want to try to take this thing.” Full Q&A. (link)

The USF Board of Trustees has approved the construction contract with Manhattan Construction Company, moving the Bulls one step closer to building an on-campus football stadium. Board Chair Will Weatherford says USF is targeting October 18 as the break-ground date. According to the term sheet approved by trustees, the builders will receive 2.25% of the cost of construction of the guaranteed maximum price. That figure has yet to be decided. The Bulls have allocated up to $340M for the stadium. (link)

Georgetown has received a $4M gift from alumnus David Welch and his wife, Gretchen, to establish an endowed fund in support of the athletic director's priorities and a current use fund for new initiatives led by Men's Basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley. Their generous gift makes a profound statement to our student athletes, coaching staff, and greater community." (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde contends there are two problems with football coaches pushing back on trimming roster sizes and putting walk-on spots at risk: “It presumes football walk-ons are somehow more special than those in other sports, where they tend to make up a far larger percentage of the actual contributors to a team; and it ignores the numerical reality of football, wherein most walk-ons rarely and barely play. Check the participation numbers.” SEC teams averaged 121 players on the roster in 2023 while playing just 58 per game. Forde: “Point being, coaches aren’t overly interested in having a flotilla of walk-ons who actually impact the depth chart and take playing time—they want the flotilla for practice fodder. They want two sets of live drills going at all times, known as ‘two-spotting.’ That means starters on one field and second-stringers on another, both of them getting reps against the ‘meat squad’ guys who don’t see the field on Saturdays. That’s all well and good in an era of limitless resources. Now? Not so much. Outfitting, feeding and providing medical care to 120 players is expensive, even if scholarships are capped at 85. … The days of operating the way football programs always have are coming to an end. It’s time to stop throwing out half a ham while joining the unfamiliar world of (some) fiscal restraint.” (link)

The ACC has signed an agreement with IC360 that will provide each member institution access to IC360’s integrity monitoring technology and data insights. The agreement also gives each ACC member institution the option to opt in to receive IC360’s educational services and access to its ProhiBet platform. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “The ACC’s partnership with Integrity Compliance 360 is extremely important as we continue our dedication to upholding the integrity and true spirit of college athletics. Through this collaboration, our member schools will have access to cutting-edge technology for monitoring and ensuring the fairest and safest environments for student-athletes nationwide.” (link)

On Location and Blueprint Sports announce a partnership that will allow NIL collectives to monetize the resale of game tickets. Specifically, fans across the country will be able to donate game tickets for resale to their school’s collective to help fund NIL opportunities for student-athletes. On Location EVP of Ticketing Greg Nortman: “NIL collectives play a key role in supporting student-athletes and we are excited to utilize our best-in-class expertise and software to help them generate important new revenue through a seamless, first-of its-kind ticket resale program. This is the perfect solution for alumni and college football and basketball fans across the country who are unable to attend a game and want to help out their school’s collective and student-athletes.” (link)
