Washington AD Pat Chun caught up with Fox Sports’/D1.ticker’s Bryan Fischer at the opening day of the 2024 NACDA Convention covering a number of items, including getting acclimated in Seattle: “Already having familiarity with some of the staff has been a huge help. Their willingness to give me trust right away. I acknowledge that knowing our athletic department had some whiplash. Three athletic directors, two football coaches, two men’s basketball coaches in an academic year is a lot for any athletic department, let alone a storied one like Washington. For them to be willing to be so trusting of me right away, for them to welcome our family right away, plus the hire of Kurt Svoboda, he fits us in really unique, extraordinary ways.” Chun on key initiatives for the next six months: “It always starts with people. I need to get to know our staff better. I’ve told our team my mindset is that I need to earn the right to be on this team. We can’t do anything unless we have the right people involved. I’ve inherited an extraordinary group of people and I want to make sure the people we add to this team are just as extraordinary.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect, including looking back at the Pac-12, advantages of his Big Ten familiarity & time management challenges. Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly also stopped by the Collegiate Sports Connect at the 2024 NACDA Convention interview set for a conversation with Kristen Eargle. Notably from Butterly on the House settlement: “Part of it is shock on how we got put into the overall settlement. [...] There are 27 conferences who didn’t learn anything about this settlement until early May and this would be our taxation as part of that. [...] Every week that we’ve gotten updates the money continues to increase in terms of what each conference and each institution owes. [...] Now you’re looking at not only the costs of it, but the impact of it.” Butterly goes on to say that potentially cutting sport programs “is going to have to be on the docket. No athletic director, no conference, no institution wants to think about cutting sports or scholarships, but these are real dollars and real world scenarios. Cost of a college education isn’t going down, it continues to go up. If you look at a Cal State or University of California school, tuition costs go up 6% per year. Those are costs athletic departments have to fund. [...] Conferences such as the Big West are already on slim margins on their operating budgets.” More from Butterly on Connect. (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois, incoming Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown and Illinois Asst. AD for Strategic Initiatives Kamron Cox participated in a panel discussion on revenue sharing as the 2024 NACDA Convention got underway in Las Vegas. Bjork noted that “if we want to keep 36 sports, it’ll have to be funded differently” as the financial relationship between student-athletes and athletic departments changes. He pointed out that questions still surround roster limits, scholarship limits, and conference-wide sport sponsorship. Further, Bjork said no matter the plan, it’ll be under legal threat and that the House settlement still needs U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken’s approval. Also, conferences or the NCAA need to define third-party involvement, and colleges need experts connecting athletes with NIL opportunities, but he’s not sure that should be handled inside athletics. Reed-Francois believes athletic departments will figure it out, noting everyone figured out how to adapt during COVID. She also emphasized the need for financial education for athletes and said want vs. need will need to be evaluated going forward. No more “this is how we’ve always done it.” Cox emphasized the need for athletic departments to carefully consider the pros and cons of private equity, and Bjork asked: “What are they actually buying? What’s the rate of return? What’s the management inclusion in the process? If we needed money, we’d go to the university and they’d tap into private banking or bond issues.” More from Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh. (link)

Former Colorado State AD/new Iowa Deputy AD Joe Parker comments on how the Rams may approach the changing marketplace structure: “I’d imagine they’re going to be able to compete. It’s just going to get harder. But it’ll stabilize. And I think, for everyone, just knowing what the rules of the game were (is) going to be key in building whatever strategy you feel comfortable with. If the settlement is approved and it sticks, it gives everyone a chance to kind of build (within) the model.” Parker also points to the facilities “arms race” as one area of spending that may get impacted: “I think it does (slow down). I think you saw Iowa State had to make a decision relative to a project where they had to put a pause on it. I got the feeling probably 14-16 months ago that once that train had left the station and you’re on this path, where it’s going to be different. I think for me, and for a lot of people, you just want to know what the rules of the game are.” (link)

NCAA Office of the Committee on Infractions Managing Director Matt Mikrut joins Husch Blackwell attorneys Kristina Minor, Jason Montgomery and TaRonda Randall for a webinar titled “Behind the Scenes of the NCAA Committee on Infractions (Divisions I, II & III).” Topics covered include the NCAA infractions process, high-profile DI cases, current trends in infractions, meaningful penalties, exemplary cooperation, and risk mitigation and proactive measures. Recruiting visits were the most frequent Level I and II violations in 2022-23, accounting for 27%, followed by recruiting offers/inducements (26%), impermissible recruiting contact (24%) and the use of an impermissible recruiter (16%). Mikrut explains that sports wagering cases can be difficult to navigate because they involve more “individualized behavior” and don’t always fit into the level structure from an institutional standpoint. Therefore, “some of the conversations that are taking place right now are, given the shared accountability for the conduct, where is it appropriate and how is it appropriate to penalize or address that conduct with involved individual behavior and institutional behavior? So, I look for that to be another evolution over the next year. We’ll probably see a lot of cases – most of those have gone through the negotiated resolution process – but how people in institutions or entities are held accountable for it remains kind of an open discussion.” Lots more in the full webinar. LSU AD Scott Woodward sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to consider the overlapping definitions of “consumer” versus “customer” in college athletics and how the industry creates value for the broader academic mission of an institution. Woodward also discusses the transformational impact of higher education, especially for football student-athletes, his experience working on campus and how it instilled in him a love for academics, and how his philosophy on staff development is centered on the concept of “doing the right thing.” Woodward on emphasizing the value of academics to student-athletes: “It’s nebulous to them because they want it immediately, and they want to see it, but the statistics don't lie. It’s life-changing. It’s generational changing when you get that higher education degree, especially when you're first generation into it. It’s not going to guarantee anything, but it is in the long run going to make your life better [not only] as a person, [but] also better economically. The statistics bear out that you're going to have 70% more money with a bachelor's degree.” On developing staff members to become better leaders, Woodward advises: “Better yourself broadly. Read, write, pay attention to what's going on in the world. Just don't focus on real finite, narrow athletic things. Anyone can get information…but the way you manage and the way you endure and the way you deal with people, that’s so much more important. And staying broad in that sense and staying involved in your mind on other things, to me, is the most important thing you could do.” (link)

Cal Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Markeisha Everett sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to dive into the evolution of the Cal Athletics brand in the wake of conference realignment. Among the long-tail impacts are shifts in strategic thinking around marketing and promotion efforts to both hometown audiences and new demographics across the ACC footprint; reevaluating revenue models; and implementing changes to the premium fan experience. Everett also shares insight into her creative process, how she evaluates career opportunities, and the importance of communication and vulnerability for leaders. Everett explains of Cal’s recent fan demographic study. “We didn’t just study who our fans are, we also studied, ‘Hey, here's what the potential for your fan base is,’ and not just when it comes to selling tickets, but if you're looking for donations, here's the right pool of people that might be interested in that. If you're looking to sell mini-plans – you know premium is a hot topic in the Bay whether you're going to a Warriors game or a 49ers game, people want premium experiences – so that has allowed us to truly go and revamp what that premium experience looks like so that we can take care of the true blue Cal fan, but we can also introduce some new people to our brand that's right there in our backyard.” Full Q&A on ADU. Accelerate Equity Founder/Executive Director Pamela Seidenman has created the Gender Equity Dashboard using the publicly available data that athletic departments report to the Department of Education. Seidenman explains the dashboard is designed to increase transparency by offering a more user-friendly way to analyze Title IX data. “Are women getting a fair share of spots on teams and athletic scholarships? How does spending on recruiting and overall spending on men’s and women’s sports compare? The Dashboard lets you quickly find the answers for any college. It also explains how Title IX works and what actions anyone can take to help women athletes get the equality they deserve.” Seidenman asserts that this information is now more important than ever as “pressures on athletic budgets due to revenue sharing further threaten women’s sports and the chance to play college sports. … The alternative? Turning our backs on hundreds of thousands of young women and letting 50-plus years of sex discrimination continue unchecked. I’m betting that we have reached the moment when enough sports fans are willing to speak up and insist that colleges treat women athletes fairly.” (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman observes that AI presents a looming challenge for sports properties: “The biggest concern is that these tools will be used to misrepresent athletes or team brands—posting them appearing to support a cause or brand they otherwise wouldn’t, or just outright slandering them via pixels. It’s unlikely we’ll see real-life Shohei Ohtani promoting a sportsbook or [LeBron] James hawking Adidas. With AI however, anything is possible. Then there’s the economic issue of ensuring players are properly compensated for their NIL.” OneTeam Managing Director and Chief Legal Officer Tim Slavin: “We have avoided formal conflict. I don’t know how long that’ll last. There have been some difficult conversations.” At the same time, Slavin says OneTeam has held “a series of presentations” with player associations and others about ways to capitalize on the new technology, and Feldman notes that “rightsholders are looking into building custom, brand-safe models that would give licensees or fans the ability to create new content using player/team marks within defined parameters.” Moving forward, Slavin notes: “This is certainly an area of significant opportunity. We’re excited for the fan and the athlete to have better and more chances to interact. But as we make our way into this space, we know we need to remain vigilant.” (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz tells the Bald Face Truth’s John Canzano a new AD for the Cougars will be named by the start of the football season. Interim WSU AD Anne McCoy on if she’s interviewed for the job: “I think it’s been probably an ongoing interview. [...] We’ve certainly talked a bunch over the last 60 days or however long it’s been now. So I would describe it as much as an ongoing process. Quite honestly, that part I’ve appreciated because to really, truly interview for a job, if that’s where the focus is, then I can't do what I need to do for the department on a daily basis. I’ve appreciated him having my interview be more on the job, so to speak, versus a formal presentation process that would be tremendously time-consuming and take away from what my priority needs to be.” McCoy also talks about the future of the Pac-12: “I think more than anything, whether it’s a rebuild of the Pac-12, whether it’s a merger, reverse merger, whether it’s a different conference, whether it’s something that’s a concept or an organization that doesn’t currently exist as we know it today, the one message I’ve really tried to have is, as cliché as it sounds, we cannot have people just stay on the sidelines. This is the time more than ever that Washington State needs the Cougs, Oregon State needs the Beavs. We need people to buy tickets and be at our games. We need people to tune in. We need people to invest. But we also just need people to talk positively about the possibilities in the future. [...] That’s, to me, the biggest thing that people — it’s time. It’s time to turn the chapter and to be excited for where our future will lie.” More. (link)

On Montlake’s Christian Caple has a slew of financial updates from Washington as the Huskies “will ask the school’s board of regents next week to approve a budget that includes loans from three sources — the Big Ten, Fox and the university’s invested funds” to cover a projected $30M budget shortfall for next year. However, Caple also notes: “There is some good news: UW exceeded its football ticket-sales projections for FY24 (i.e. the 2023 football season), and is projecting another year of season-ticket sales growth — to 47,000 — for the 2024 season. An agenda document also notes an increase in future College Football Playoff revenue, but warns that ‘the litany of current and future lawsuits related to ‘Name, Image & Likeness’ and other anti-trust areas pose risks. Movements to unionize and compensate student-athletes further complicate the amateur student-athlete model.’ Increased ticket sales are a big reason why the school projects a record $165 million in revenue in FY25 — up from the record $160 million it projects for FY24 — though the $29.7 million deficit results from an expected $194.7 million in expenses, including capital expenditures and debt service.” Also of note, with the transition to the Big Ten, UW will need to build a new on-campus production studio, which will run $24M in total, $18M for construction & $6M for equipment. Georgia Tech AD J Batt in a recent sit-down interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I think it’s fair to expect a major shift in college athletics and how we’ll operate. I think there are as many unknowns as knowns as this point in time. I will say we are going to look at it as an opportunity. Any time there is change, and particularly significant change, there is an opportunity for advancement. At Georgia Tech, we’re going to lean into our alignment, into our location at the center of college athletics and here in Atlanta, and find ways to take advantage of that change. … It’s not simply change, it’s the rate and scope of change in the college athletics industry right now. Change is a constant, no matter the industry you’re in. So continuing to manage that change and create opportunities out of change, I think that’s the thing that I’m constantly focused on. I wouldn’t say it’s a negative part, it’s simply something that requires constant attention and focus.” On balancing where funds are appropriated: “You absolutely have to be focused on both. Investing in our fans and our fan experience is super important. And then generating revenue to enhance the overall revenue of the overall department, also important. Finding the ability to put together both and do a comprehensive approach is really important.” On Tech’s sponsorships and partnerships efforts: “Georgia Tech athletics is open for business. Revenue generation is absolutely at the forefront for us. It’s a huge priority, it’s something we work on every single day. I think it’s important that we’re active in the Atlanta sports community, we’re active in the Atlanta sports business community, in the Atlanta corporate community. We are very active. We’re having a lot of different conversations, trying to be very creative and take advantage of our spot.” More. (link)

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley laments the direction of the NCAA, telling OutKick’s Dan Dakich: "These NCAA idiots and fools, I should just call them jackasses like they are. I'm trying to figure out how we've screwed up college sports. I said it one day, I would call it the wild, wild west, but that would be disrespectful to the wild, wild west. I have no idea, how did we ruin college sports? And i understand why Dan (Hurley) is like ‘I might as well go to the NBA and make a lot of money. Don’t have the headaches of NIL and the transfer portal', because I have no idea where college sports are going. But it's going in a bad direction. … We have screwed up college sports for 1%, Dan. One percent of players who probably make all the money, but we're going to end up screwing up the 99% that actually need college to get a free education.” Barkley goes on to wonder: “If I am gonna give a guy a couple million – which is crazy to even think about because we’re paying a guy a couple million to go to school for six months – what's the benefit to the school? Football is a little bit different because at least you get three years of them. But if I'm gonna pay a basketball player two million dollars, and he's only going to be on campus for six months and it's kinda hard to throw a bunch of guys together, and we lose in the first or second round, I don’t understand how that helps the program.” Barkley also jokingly told Auburn to stop calling him for millions of dollars every year. “Ya'll need to stop. I love Auburn, I love Auburn. But the chances of me going back to black and broke again because I want Auburn to be good in football and basketball, that's not gonna happen.” (link)

The Pac-12 Hotline’s Jon Wilner writes on the coming addition of corporate logos to football playing fields: “We expect most schools to take advantage of the opportunity, if not in time for the 2024 season then by the fall of 2025. Washington is fortunate in that three globally recognized corporate brands are based in Seattle: Starbucks, Microsoft and Amazon. The rule change permits on-field logos for the entire season or on a game-to-game basis, meaning schools could bid out the rights based on the opponent. Washington could charge more for a game against Michigan than Purdue, for instance. Other schools with obvious corporate partners will do the same. [...] How soon until the schools sell the naming rights to their athletic departments? When will the University of Washington Huskies become the Starbucks Huskies? It’s coming, folks. It might take a few years — maybe five years, maybe 10 — but it’s coming. Everything else about major college football is big business. Why not just sell the name of your football program? Why not sell the entire department to a corporate sponsor?” (link)

U.S. Congressman/former Baylor football student-athlete Colin Allred (D-TX) joins CBS Sports HQ to talk about the House settlement and the future of college sports and says he was initially against an employment model, “but I think we’re moving in that direction certainly after this agreement. And I think we need to have a federal legislation to try and set national standards around this now so that we're not seeing dramatically different laws state to state and region to region and conference to conference, quite honestly. We also need to find specific ways to protect Title IX and to protect some of the – what we call, I guess, now – non-revenue sports that I think are really important. Those are scholarship-generating opportunities for young men and women that will change their lives. I want to maintain that. I don’t want to see those go away, and I also certainly want to make sure that we're doing this in a way that has gender equity.” Allred believes there is a way forward for congressional leadership, particularly as universities “are going to be telling all of us to please act.” Allred contends there needs to be a way to find balance “as some of these sports are creating these enormous amounts of revenue and are also going to be then paying these players more, that those obviously have to be treated differently than a sport that's a non-revenue sport. … That also may involve federal legislation.” More from Allred. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and former South Carolina/William & Mary Swimming & Diving HC McGee Moody join the Inside with Brett Hawke podcast to discuss the future of college swimming and other olympic sports at the collegiate level. Forde points out it will be incumbent upon swimming to “rally around itself and sell itself as a valuable commodity, and that goes to USA Swimming, the USOPC, I think need to be involved in helping support these programs.” Moody notes that he’s heard South Carolina is looking to spend $1.2M to $2M per season on a new Baseball HC. “And I think the mindset has become not only with athletic departments themselves, but with fan bases and just across the country [in general, the] perception is this is Monopoly money that they're playing with. The numbers that they're talking about are just astronomical.” Moody and Forde both agree the SEC and Big Ten appear to be maneuvering the industry in the direction they want with Forde remarking: “The SEC and Big Ten, they're continuing to flex their muscle more and more and have threatened, I think, tacitly or otherwise, that, ‘Hey, y'all play ball with us or we'll leave the NCAA, we'll do our own thing.’ And there's there's some people that would love to see that happen because then they may get back to something that’s ‘more like college athletics,’ but the problem is what we would lose is the NCAA basketball tournament, which I think is the best thing there is in college sports. … I think that’s one of the reasons the small conferences are paying as much of this settlement as they are is it's kind of blackmail money from the Big Ten in the SEC.” Full podcast. SBJ’s Bill King reports MLB’s gambling investigation that recently led to the lifetime ban of San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano began before the start of this season when the league asked FanDuel to “cross-check its customer rolls against MLB 40-man rosters to see whether players had bet on baseball. When FanDuel came back with indications that some had, MLB launched an investigation into those players that extended beyond FanDuel. A source at another sportsbook said MLB approached it to check ‘a handful’ of names in April.” King goes on to wonder why leagues and sportsbooks wouldn’t use this information to keep players from betting in the first place, noting the “universe of prohibited bettors, and the process for excluding them, varies from state to state. The more effective way to block players, coaches, officials and execs from betting on their sport would be to get their names and other identifiable information into the hands of sportsbooks, who could deny bets that ran afoul of league, or NCAA rules.” King acknowledges there are privacy concerns since the majority who would be on a list of prohibited bettors likely have no intention of signing up for a sportsbook account. Also, while IC 360’s ProhiBet platform could serve this purpose (and MLB is in discussions about using it), it would “almost certainly would need buy-in from unions.” King also notes: “Some leading sportsbooks have questioned whether it’s necessary for the larger leagues, suggesting they could perform the same functions working directly with the sportsbooks. Software such as ProhiBet can’t work unless the sportsbooks sign on to use it.” (link)
