Tampa Baseball won the program’s ninth national title, tied for the most in DII, after a 8-3 win over Angelo State. (link)

During the GSC spring meetings, the conference decided to allow future reclassifying members to compete in conference tournaments, assuming a member has been accepted into the NCAA’s two-year expedited membership process, and removed the intra-conference transfer policy effective immediately. Valdosta State President Richard Carvajal will serve as the chair of the GSC Board of Directors, with West Florida CEO Martha Saunders to serve as vice chair. (link)

NCAA Office of the Committee on Infractions Managing Director Matt Mikrut joins Husch Blackwell attorneys Kristina Minor, Jason Montgomery and TaRonda Randall for a webinar titled “Behind the Scenes of the NCAA Committee on Infractions (Divisions I, II & III).” Topics covered include the NCAA infractions process, high-profile DI cases, current trends in infractions, meaningful penalties, exemplary cooperation, and risk mitigation and proactive measures. Recruiting visits were the most frequent Level I and II violations in 2022-23, accounting for 27%, followed by recruiting offers/inducements (26%), impermissible recruiting contact (24%) and the use of an impermissible recruiter (16%). Mikrut explains that sports wagering cases can be difficult to navigate because they involve more “individualized behavior” and don’t always fit into the level structure from an institutional standpoint. Therefore, “some of the conversations that are taking place right now are, given the shared accountability for the conduct, where is it appropriate and how is it appropriate to penalize or address that conduct with involved individual behavior and institutional behavior? So, I look for that to be another evolution over the next year. We’ll probably see a lot of cases – most of those have gone through the negotiated resolution process – but how people in institutions or entities are held accountable for it remains kind of an open discussion.” Lots more in the full webinar.
