Washington State President Kirk Schulz tells the Bald Face Truth’s John Canzano a new AD for the Cougars will be named by the start of the football season. Interim WSU AD Anne McCoy on if she’s interviewed for the job: “I think it’s been probably an ongoing interview. [...] We’ve certainly talked a bunch over the last 60 days or however long it’s been now. So I would describe it as much as an ongoing process. Quite honestly, that part I’ve appreciated because to really, truly interview for a job, if that’s where the focus is, then I can't do what I need to do for the department on a daily basis. I’ve appreciated him having my interview be more on the job, so to speak, versus a formal presentation process that would be tremendously time-consuming and take away from what my priority needs to be.” McCoy also talks about the future of the Pac-12: “I think more than anything, whether it’s a rebuild of the Pac-12, whether it’s a merger, reverse merger, whether it’s a different conference, whether it’s something that’s a concept or an organization that doesn’t currently exist as we know it today, the one message I’ve really tried to have is, as cliché as it sounds, we cannot have people just stay on the sidelines. This is the time more than ever that Washington State needs the Cougs, Oregon State needs the Beavs. We need people to buy tickets and be at our games. We need people to tune in. We need people to invest. But we also just need people to talk positively about the possibilities in the future. [...] That’s, to me, the biggest thing that people — it’s time. It’s time to turn the chapter and to be excited for where our future will lie.” More. (link)

On Montlake’s Christian Caple has a slew of financial updates from Washington as the Huskies “will ask the school’s board of regents next week to approve a budget that includes loans from three sources — the Big Ten, Fox and the university’s invested funds” to cover a projected $30M budget shortfall for next year. However, Caple also notes: “There is some good news: UW exceeded its football ticket-sales projections for FY24 (i.e. the 2023 football season), and is projecting another year of season-ticket sales growth — to 47,000 — for the 2024 season. An agenda document also notes an increase in future College Football Playoff revenue, but warns that ‘the litany of current and future lawsuits related to ‘Name, Image & Likeness’ and other anti-trust areas pose risks. Movements to unionize and compensate student-athletes further complicate the amateur student-athlete model.’ Increased ticket sales are a big reason why the school projects a record $165 million in revenue in FY25 — up from the record $160 million it projects for FY24 — though the $29.7 million deficit results from an expected $194.7 million in expenses, including capital expenditures and debt service.” Also of note, with the transition to the Big Ten, UW will need to build a new on-campus production studio, which will run $24M in total, $18M for construction & $6M for equipment. Georgia Tech AD J Batt in a recent sit-down interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I think it’s fair to expect a major shift in college athletics and how we’ll operate. I think there are as many unknowns as knowns as this point in time. I will say we are going to look at it as an opportunity. Any time there is change, and particularly significant change, there is an opportunity for advancement. At Georgia Tech, we’re going to lean into our alignment, into our location at the center of college athletics and here in Atlanta, and find ways to take advantage of that change. … It’s not simply change, it’s the rate and scope of change in the college athletics industry right now. Change is a constant, no matter the industry you’re in. So continuing to manage that change and create opportunities out of change, I think that’s the thing that I’m constantly focused on. I wouldn’t say it’s a negative part, it’s simply something that requires constant attention and focus.” On balancing where funds are appropriated: “You absolutely have to be focused on both. Investing in our fans and our fan experience is super important. And then generating revenue to enhance the overall revenue of the overall department, also important. Finding the ability to put together both and do a comprehensive approach is really important.” On Tech’s sponsorships and partnerships efforts: “Georgia Tech athletics is open for business. Revenue generation is absolutely at the forefront for us. It’s a huge priority, it’s something we work on every single day. I think it’s important that we’re active in the Atlanta sports community, we’re active in the Atlanta sports business community, in the Atlanta corporate community. We are very active. We’re having a lot of different conversations, trying to be very creative and take advantage of our spot.” More. (link)

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley laments the direction of the NCAA, telling OutKick’s Dan Dakich: "These NCAA idiots and fools, I should just call them jackasses like they are. I'm trying to figure out how we've screwed up college sports. I said it one day, I would call it the wild, wild west, but that would be disrespectful to the wild, wild west. I have no idea, how did we ruin college sports? And i understand why Dan (Hurley) is like ‘I might as well go to the NBA and make a lot of money. Don’t have the headaches of NIL and the transfer portal', because I have no idea where college sports are going. But it's going in a bad direction. … We have screwed up college sports for 1%, Dan. One percent of players who probably make all the money, but we're going to end up screwing up the 99% that actually need college to get a free education.” Barkley goes on to wonder: “If I am gonna give a guy a couple million – which is crazy to even think about because we’re paying a guy a couple million to go to school for six months – what's the benefit to the school? Football is a little bit different because at least you get three years of them. But if I'm gonna pay a basketball player two million dollars, and he's only going to be on campus for six months and it's kinda hard to throw a bunch of guys together, and we lose in the first or second round, I don’t understand how that helps the program.” Barkley also jokingly told Auburn to stop calling him for millions of dollars every year. “Ya'll need to stop. I love Auburn, I love Auburn. But the chances of me going back to black and broke again because I want Auburn to be good in football and basketball, that's not gonna happen.” (link)

The Pac-12 Hotline’s Jon Wilner writes on the coming addition of corporate logos to football playing fields: “We expect most schools to take advantage of the opportunity, if not in time for the 2024 season then by the fall of 2025. Washington is fortunate in that three globally recognized corporate brands are based in Seattle: Starbucks, Microsoft and Amazon. The rule change permits on-field logos for the entire season or on a game-to-game basis, meaning schools could bid out the rights based on the opponent. Washington could charge more for a game against Michigan than Purdue, for instance. Other schools with obvious corporate partners will do the same. [...] How soon until the schools sell the naming rights to their athletic departments? When will the University of Washington Huskies become the Starbucks Huskies? It’s coming, folks. It might take a few years — maybe five years, maybe 10 — but it’s coming. Everything else about major college football is big business. Why not just sell the name of your football program? Why not sell the entire department to a corporate sponsor?” (link)

U.S. Congressman/former Baylor football student-athlete Colin Allred (D-TX) joins CBS Sports HQ to talk about the House settlement and the future of college sports and says he was initially against an employment model, “but I think we’re moving in that direction certainly after this agreement. And I think we need to have a federal legislation to try and set national standards around this now so that we're not seeing dramatically different laws state to state and region to region and conference to conference, quite honestly. We also need to find specific ways to protect Title IX and to protect some of the – what we call, I guess, now – non-revenue sports that I think are really important. Those are scholarship-generating opportunities for young men and women that will change their lives. I want to maintain that. I don’t want to see those go away, and I also certainly want to make sure that we're doing this in a way that has gender equity.” Allred believes there is a way forward for congressional leadership, particularly as universities “are going to be telling all of us to please act.” Allred contends there needs to be a way to find balance “as some of these sports are creating these enormous amounts of revenue and are also going to be then paying these players more, that those obviously have to be treated differently than a sport that's a non-revenue sport. … That also may involve federal legislation.” More from Allred. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and former South Carolina/William & Mary Swimming & Diving HC McGee Moody join the Inside with Brett Hawke podcast to discuss the future of college swimming and other olympic sports at the collegiate level. Forde points out it will be incumbent upon swimming to “rally around itself and sell itself as a valuable commodity, and that goes to USA Swimming, the USOPC, I think need to be involved in helping support these programs.” Moody notes that he’s heard South Carolina is looking to spend $1.2M to $2M per season on a new Baseball HC. “And I think the mindset has become not only with athletic departments themselves, but with fan bases and just across the country [in general, the] perception is this is Monopoly money that they're playing with. The numbers that they're talking about are just astronomical.” Moody and Forde both agree the SEC and Big Ten appear to be maneuvering the industry in the direction they want with Forde remarking: “The SEC and Big Ten, they're continuing to flex their muscle more and more and have threatened, I think, tacitly or otherwise, that, ‘Hey, y'all play ball with us or we'll leave the NCAA, we'll do our own thing.’ And there's there's some people that would love to see that happen because then they may get back to something that’s ‘more like college athletics,’ but the problem is what we would lose is the NCAA basketball tournament, which I think is the best thing there is in college sports. … I think that’s one of the reasons the small conferences are paying as much of this settlement as they are is it's kind of blackmail money from the Big Ten in the SEC.” Full podcast. SBJ’s Bill King reports MLB’s gambling investigation that recently led to the lifetime ban of San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano began before the start of this season when the league asked FanDuel to “cross-check its customer rolls against MLB 40-man rosters to see whether players had bet on baseball. When FanDuel came back with indications that some had, MLB launched an investigation into those players that extended beyond FanDuel. A source at another sportsbook said MLB approached it to check ‘a handful’ of names in April.” King goes on to wonder why leagues and sportsbooks wouldn’t use this information to keep players from betting in the first place, noting the “universe of prohibited bettors, and the process for excluding them, varies from state to state. The more effective way to block players, coaches, officials and execs from betting on their sport would be to get their names and other identifiable information into the hands of sportsbooks, who could deny bets that ran afoul of league, or NCAA rules.” King acknowledges there are privacy concerns since the majority who would be on a list of prohibited bettors likely have no intention of signing up for a sportsbook account. Also, while IC 360’s ProhiBet platform could serve this purpose (and MLB is in discussions about using it), it would “almost certainly would need buy-in from unions.” King also notes: “Some leading sportsbooks have questioned whether it’s necessary for the larger leagues, suggesting they could perform the same functions working directly with the sportsbooks. Software such as ProhiBet can’t work unless the sportsbooks sign on to use it.” (link)

Washington State Interim AD Anne McCoy talks about the decision to continue the Apple Cup rivalry with Washington despite some fans’ disagreement: “When we talk about the consternation about continuing the game for some fans… I feel like that game should always cause stress and consternation for both of our fan bases. I just feel like for the state of Washington, for the student-athletes and the fans at both schools, it was really important to continue it. I really do. For the foreseeable future, we envision playing that game, and I think it’s good for both universities that we do.” McCoy on former AD Pat Chun’s decision to leave Pullman for UW: “It’s hard. I think if he was going to make a decision to leave Washington State, there’s no denying pretty much anybody would have loved that to be somewhere other than the University of Washington. But again, I think that just speaks to the richness of the rivalry between the two schools. … I can’t do anything other than respect his decision and wish him well. We will continue to collaborate between the two schools, as they always have, and we will continue to want to beat them in everything we play them in. To some degree, things have changed, in that [there’s] a more familiar, known face [at UW] right now. But at the end of the day, I think how the two teams approach each other both in partnership and competition is spirited as always.” (link); More from McCoy, who says it’s too early to determine what’s next for WSU conference-wise: “I think it would be tempting to be impatient in this process right now, and I think patience and optimism are going to serve us well going forward. So, while it's too soon to tell, I think it's too soon to tell as much because a path that's out there may not be known, and we really want to make sure we've explored every possible opportunity for Washington State to really find that best landing spot.” (link)

More perspective from Minnesota AD Mark Coyle on how the shifting industry landscape could impact the Gophers: “When we start to figure out what our revenue-sharing model looks like, does it make sense in some sports to add scholarships? Does it make sense in some sports to decrease scholarships? [...] I don't know if schools will cut sports. I do think you will see schools that cut scholarships. Fund it completely differently. Minnesota could be one of those schools. That is on the table here. I told all our head coaches — I was very honest with them, and it's the same thing I told our senior staff — we are going to have to take a hard look at how we fund our programs.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown takes a look at how athletic departments can best support international student-athletes and emphasizes a point made by Oklahoma PhD student Simran Kaur Sethi, a former Sooners women’s tennis player, who writes: “International college athletes are not a uniform, monolithic group, and as such probably shouldn’t be expected to benefit the same way from a uniform set of resources or programming.” Sethi and her research colleagues point out that integration requires “adjustment from both the incoming group and the host nation,” while assimilation requires no adjustment from the host group. After catching up with several swim coaches, Brown explains two specific actions kept popping up among those who have successfully helped international student-athletes both academically and athletically. One was acknowledging cultural differences and celebrating them, rather than ignoring them. For instance, a team with two Brazilian swimmers might have athletes and coaches try Brazilian food, add Brazilian music to the playlist in the weight room and engage in team-building activities that don’t require a deep knowledge of English (like chess or video games). The other step is to make sure student-athletes can develop a cultural connection independent of the athletic department. That could mean introducing athletes to professors or other university staffers from their home country or making sure that athletes are aware of affinity group student associations. “When it’s done correctly, bringing in athletes from all over the world won’t just help a school win more swimming competitions. It will enrich the lives of everybody involved, including members of the campus community who aren’t directly connected to athletics.” (link)
