Let’s Talk Tournament Selection:

+ GAC Commissioner Prewitt takes to Twitter to break down frustrations with DII postseason selections, using this year’s WBB selections as an example. Across all eight regions, the average KPI rating varies from 14.9 in the central to 48.5 in the east, with the central region being “the only region with any KPI Top 50 teams that didn't make the field.” Further, the central region comprises teams ranked 2 through 30 in KPI and 3 through 18 in Massey. Prewitt concludes: “Really hoping that Division II sport committees will continue exploring metrics that better measure the team quality and look for ways to improve our post-season formats.  There are ways to improve the quality of selections while acting in a geographical and economical manner. Look forward to working with my fellow commissioners, sport committees, and other groups to develop solutions for D2 where post-season opportunity isn't restricted for deserving teams based on where you're at on a map.” (link) 

+ Missouri Southern AD Mallory chimes in backing KPI, but adds: “I remain hopeful we can develop some better tools and a better model.” (link) 

+ Missouri Western WBB HC Whitaker, whose Griffons did not make the tourney, told KQ2’s Rousch: “We should have six teams in this and if we're going to preach student-athlete experience, what in the world are you doing if you're not allowing kids the experience of a postseason when they deserve it and they earn it. We finished third (in the MIAA). Third, fourth, fifth, sixth in our league this year is going to win a lot of leagues across the country. You're not getting your best teams into the national tournament. You're not, so until the NCAA wants to care more about the Division II experience and the Division II athlete, you're going to continue to sell these kids short on what their experience should be.” (link)

+ MIAA boss Racy’s proposal: “WBB and MBB should be 4 Regions - 23 Conference AQ’s - 41 At Large Selections - seed the Top 16 Teams - those 16 schools host 4 team subregional tourneys - winners eventually feed into Men’s and Women’s #FinalFour in the same venue - not hard. NAIA and JUCO do it!” (link) 

AT&T has renewed its corporate champion partnership with the NCAA through 2025, “extending one of the longest-running college sponsorships,” per SBJ’s Smith, who adds: “The AT&T deal goes back to 2007 when it took over the sponsorship from Cingular Wireless, which had been an NCAA sponsor since 2001.” Smith also reports TurboTax is expected to be added as a partner soon. CBS Sports EVP Bogusz: "You probably have heard about headwinds in the advertising community and spending being a little softer. That is not the case for the sports marketplace." (link)

Fundraising Developments:

+South Dakota Mines received a $1M commitment to be split evenly between MBB and WBB from former MBB student-athlete Schauer. (link)

+ Wayne State (NE) has received a $100K donation from the First National Bank of Omaha towards the renovation of WSC’s Wellness Center renovation. (link)

Southwest Baptist AD/MBB HC Sheehy relinquishes his coaching duties, but will remain in his administrative leadership capacity. President Melson: “Coach Sheehy is a leader who has not only elevated our men's basketball program, but also created a Christ-centered culture of excellence and integrity in the SBU athletics program. As he invests fully in his work as athletic director, he brings a commitment to the success and growth of our student-athletes and will undoubtedly continue to transform and propel the SBU athletics program forward.” (link); SBU subsequently promotes AC Niven as Sheehy’s on-court successor. Melson: “Coach Niven's passion for the game of basketball, commitment to Christ, and dedication to his players have been instrumental in building a culture of success with our men's basketball program at SBU.
