Northwestern AD Derrick Gragg will be leaving his role to serve as the university’s VP for Athletics Strategy. In his new position, Gragg will focus on NIL and other major initiatives. Gragg will remain in his AD role until his successor is found and will advise President Michael Schill and others on the AD search. The new AD and Gragg will work together in certain areas with both reporting to Schill. Gragg tells ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: "I wanted to be able to help the university move forward in the new era of college athletics. These departments are going to have to expand some and have to look at expanding differently. I don't know if the traditional athletic director is going to be able to do all of these things. It's a good time for the institution to be on the front end of changes." (link)

The Big 12 is considering a private equity investment of $800M to $1B from Luxembourg-based CVC Capital Partners in exchange for a 15-20% stake in the league, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes a “portion of the money would go directly to the 16 conference members, and the partnership would give the conference access to CVC's investment services and clients.” One says the talks are “pretty serious,” but Dodd notes several league presidents need further convincing. Dodd also points out the CVC investment “would likely require the Big 12 to stay together long term. That might require some sort of assurance for CVC that a new grant of rights would be signed in 2031. … The discussion is to the point that three sources told CBS Sports a small working group of three Big 12 presidents have started digging down on the proposal.” (link)
|
The Big 12 is also exploring a naming-rights partnership that “may be one of the most lucrative and unique sponsorship deals in college athletics history.” According to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, the “latest conversations within the conference have centered on retaining ‘12’ in the ‘Big 12’ name and removing ‘Big.’ The corporate sponsor name would replace ‘Big’ — a significant change but one expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars. … Several corporations are expected to be involved in the process for the naming rights, most notably the Allstate insurance company. A possible new name of the league has emerged as ‘Allstate 12.’ … A final determination has not been made, and any agreement must gain the necessary support from the Big 12 presidents and chancellors. A Big 12 spokesperson declined to comment when reached Thursday.” (link)
|
Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports name possibilities for the Big 12, should it sell naming rights to Allstate, include “The Big Allstate Conference” or the “The Allstate 12 Conference.” McMurphy also reports the multiyear deal could earn the league between $30-$50M annually to be divided among its 16 league members and adds: “The Big 12 also is considering a financial company for its naming rights, which would pay the league slightly more than Allstate, sources said. However, the league has been more engaged with Allstate, a source said.” (link)
|
Conference USA is also “deeply exploring a multimillion-dollar naming rights sponsorship,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports Globe Life is one of the companies under consideration. “Possible new league names include Globe Life Conference USA or Globe Life Conference. Conference USA officials have spent months in deep discussion about a naming rights deal, and there is wide support within the conference for such a move. … A deal could be finalized within the next year.” (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz provides updates from today’s U.S. House on Education and the Workforce Committee’s markup hearing, during which Committee Chair Virginia Foxx claimed the bill “safeguards the economic freedom of student athletes from misclassification by NLRB bureaucrats.” Foxx also said student-athletes “deserve the freedom to play the sport they love and receive a high-quality education at the same time. Reclassifying these athletes as employees could undermine that freedom and threaten their academic journeys, turning the sports they love into a chore instead.” Ranking member Bobby Scott (D-VA) called the bill “partisan” and “overly broad” and called for it to be rejected. He warned the bill would “make things even worse” for college athletes who should not have their ability to organize foreclosed. Congressman Bob Good (R-VA), who sponsored the bill, expressed concern that if student-athletes can be become employees, it will result in increased expenses for athletic departments. A vote is slated for later today. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker brings some much-needed passion to the role, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who points out that Baker engaged in an “agitated discussion” with DraftKings College Sports Editor Collin Sherwin at this week’s NACDA Convention. Sherwin tells Dodd there was “no cussing [from Baker], but I did get hit with a ‘leave the kids alone.'" Sherwin acknowledges his fundamental difference of opinion with Baker on sports gambling but says there’s no bad blood between them. “He certainly has a different opinion. As he reminded me, he has spoken to multiple attorneys general and gaming commissions and they all say the [illegal offshore] player college prop market is not a problem. That's what he says. I would say, if it's not an issue, it's going to become one if we don't legalize these markets. There's no incentive for anyone in Costa Rica or the Isle of Man to [oversee prop bets]." (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake and The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner also recently spoke with retired AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco, who asserted the strength of the SEC and Big Ten is “now a real concern. It’s not that they don’t have able leaders — and they’re friends and have been friends of mine for a long time. That’s not the issue. The issue is that it has become Darwinian. They really threw their weight around in this whole CFP process and we just didn’t have enough leverage to fight it.” Aresco on the Group of 5’s future: “What the G5 have to be careful about is to be forced into a separate division. That would be the worst thing. We had to be sure to always stay with the top guys because that’s how we viewed ourselves. … It’s why I’ve opposed this G5 playoff. … If you do anything that separates you from the [Power 4], it gives them more of a reason to say you’re not really in our division anymore. If you ever lost access to the College Football Playoff, you’ve got big problems. That’s your lifeblood. You can’t lose access to that. You play those teams. What you don’t want is to be like FCS and be in a separate division. You still play those teams but they don’t view you the same way.” Aresco also called realignment a “complete mess. You’ve got things that just don’t make sense. Let’s be honest, how does it make sense that Stanford and Cal are playing on the East Coast? It just doesn’t make sense. But that’s what we have to deal with now. Whether some of that is self-correcting down the road, I don’t know. I have no idea. But we’ll see.” Full podcast. (link)

The Pac-12 is looking at holding a “casual” media event Las Vegas on July 10, and JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous proprietor reports: “I’ll have more details soon, but I’m told it’s not an official media day. It’s a small gathering featuring Washington State coach Jake Dickert, Oregon State’s Trent Bray, a couple of players from each team, and some media members. Commissioner Teresa Gould is also expected to attend. I’m told by a source that the event is more of a conversation than a traditional media day. The schools will also hold separate events with local media on their campuses.” Canzano also points out that if the event comes together in Las Vegas, it will “piggyback on the Big 12 and Mountain West Conference football media days. That Wednesday (July 10) happens to be the final day of the Big 12’s two-day football media day at Allegiant Stadium and the first day of the MWC’s two-day media event at Circa Resort and Casino.” (link)

The Wisconsin men’s and women’s hockey teams may take part in a Big Ten MTE at Wrigley Field following the NHL Winter Classic next season. The conference hasn't announced details, but the plans being discussed include three Big Ten men's hockey games and one women's hockey contest involving Wisconsin and Ohio State, according to the Wisconsin State Journal’s Todd Milewski, who adds: “The men's teams involved, sources said, include Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. Minnesota is the odd one out from the seven-team men's hockey conference.” With the Winter Classic slated for December 31, it’s likely the games will be played in early January, though a date has yet to be set. Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley says he labored over whether to take the Lakers job or stay at UConn and tells Dan Le Batard: “One of the worst takes I’ve heard is that this was a leverage play by me to improve my situation at UConn. I don’t need leverage here. We’ve won back to back national championships at this place. This was never a leverage situation for me. I’ve had a contract situation in place for a couple of weeks, and the financial part in terms of salary has been done for a while. There’s some other parts like NIL and staff salaries and some different things that I want adjusted that I’m not comfortable with. But the sense or the idea that this was just a conspiracy to get me a sweeter deal at UConn is just lazy and not [true]. It was truly a gut-wrenching decision for me because I was really – Sunday night going into Monday where I had kind of a deadline in my mind – I was like torn and I didn’t know really what I was going to do until I went to bed.” Asked if there was an amount of money that would have caused him to leave UConn for the Lakers, Hurley replied: “To leave all that behind, there probably is a number. I don’t know what that is.” (link)

More from NCAA President Charlie Baker’s sit-down with Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer from NACDA. Is this Baker’s last job? “I don’t know. Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard sat down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle at the 2024 NACDA Convention in Las Vegas, where he provided an update on CYTown, a fall preview, and his response to the House settlement. Pollard discusses what that might look like financially at an Iowa State. “We have a responsibility as athletics directors to protect the opportunities. I know the easy thing to say is that we will have to drop sports. I don’t want to be a part of that, if we can help it. In order to do that, a lot of those opportunities are going to have to look a lot different. … We’re just not going to be able, at a school like Iowa State, to fund all 18 sports at the highest level with the goal of being the very best in everything you do and traveling anywhere in the country. We’re going to have to be selective, and those are going to be some really tough choices. But they’re choices that can be managed and led. It won't be fun. I mean, it's not a path any of us would have chosen if I gave you a piece of paper and said write out the future, but the future was determined by the courts. And the courts have said that those athletes in the revenue-generating sports need to be paid first, and if you can pay them first and still provide all those wonderful opportunities, more power to you. I just don't think most of us can.” On leading through a changing time when the variables are still unknown: “I also just believe this logo, the logos of all the other schools around here just mean so much to the people at our schools and our country in general. I mean, 80% of all the medals won at the last Olympics were won by collegians or former collegians. I don't believe the industry is going away, so you just have to have a long-term approach to it.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova, litigator Cody Wilcoxson and James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis participated in a panel discussion on the future of NIL at the NACDA 2024 Convention. On Title IX issues related to revenue sharing, Wilcoxson said he didn’t know how money generated by football broadcasting revenue could be divided between all athletes; however, he thinks equitable opportunities are still required and that a Title IX challenge is probably inevitable. Meanwhile, Winter said he’s not confident the Department of Education will give a black and white answer on how Title IX applies to revenue sharing, so the courts will likely have to decide. Maiorova noted that she would like to see the NCAA lobby for a legal fix for international athletes. Even if schools aren’t sharing revenue with international athletes, Maiorova believes their visas could be in danger if athletes in general are being paid. Davis remarked that if universities administer direct NIL payments/revenue sharing, there is less excess private benefit risk because it would be such a small part of the university’s finances as a whole. Ole Miss AD Keith Carter talks about moving the Egg Bowl to Black Friday: “In that negotiation, ABC came to us and said we want this date, and we wanna play at this time. And we actually did have a little negotiating power on another game that we got scheduled at the time we wanted on the road. … It's interesting. At times, when they want something to happen, they'll work with you a little bit. But the times that they just wanna impose their (kickoff times) they do. Again, we get paid a lot of money to play at whatever time they say and that's kind of how it works." (link)

ABCA Executive Director Craig Keilitz believes that “we’re probably in a golden age of college baseball right now,” but the AP’s Eric Olson observes that “beneath the surface, there is concern the transformation of college athletics will further reduce the number of programs capable of competing at the highest level. Baseball already is top heavy. The SEC has claimed four straight national championships and nine of the last 14, and has had at least one team in 14 of the past 15 finals. Since 2014, 50 of the 80 CWS teams have been from the SEC (31) or ACC (19).” Olson goes on to note that the SEC dominates in baseball NIL spending: “Since July 1, 2021, the average estimated annual NIL spending per SEC baseball team was $820K to $920K, based on more than 150K NIL transactions disclosed through or processed by Opendorse. … The average NIL spending in the ACC is half that of the SEC but still ranks second among all conferences. If scholarship limits are removed, which is the expectation, deep-pocketed programs could choose to fully fund their programs.” Recently retired Coastal Carolina HC Gary Gilmore warns that without guardrails the funnel of talent to the most highly resourced teams will only continue: “If Major League Baseball, the NBA and NFL had a system where everyone was a free agent every year, do you realize what chaos it would be? If you did it in baseball, it would be the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Texas. The rest of the teams couldn’t compete. That’s what is going on right now. There’s not a level playing field.” (link)

Several softball coaches say they worry about what sharing revenue could mean for their sport, particularly at a time when its popularity is surging. Florida HC Tim Walton hopes the changes benefit softball players, but he’s concerned that some could be cut out to take care of the best ones. “My greatest fear for a long time has just been, at what point in time is our model sustainable for all sports, coaches, programs across the country. That’s my biggest concern. I do believe we’re heading down a path that’s going to be probably a lot more equivalent for males and female athletes alike. But how many of them? I think that’s the biggest question that I would have.” Texas HC Mike White adds: “We are in a growth stage, along with several other women’s sports that have taken off right now. We’re certainly afraid of (changes hurting softball), that’s for sure. We don’t want that to happen. We’re hoping each individual school sees the benefit of keeping the money in softball and keeping it as a premier sport.” Oklahoma HC Patty Gasso is bullish about the sport’s future, “but I’ve got to trust it’s in the hands of those who are going to make good decisions for our student-athletes and for athletics in general.” (link)

The North Carolina Board of Education has approved policy language that prohibits athletes at public high schools from participating in NIL activities. On3’s Jeremy Crabtree: “Complicating the situation in North Carolina is the fact that the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association announced changes to its handbook for the 2024-2025 school year that allow NCISAA student-athletes to profit from their NIL and maintain eligibility. The NCISAA has around 100 member schools, all non-public institutions throughout North Carolina.” Former Georgia football student-athlete/NFL All-Pro Thomas Davis, whose son is a top recruit in the class of 2026, disagrees with the decision: “I just think that if you’re going to allow it for one particular set of kids, then it shouldn’t be allowed for all of them. And if it isn’t going to be allowed for everyone, then nobody shouldn’t be able to do it. I think we have enough states that have got on board with the whole NIL structure at the high school level, and they’ve done it the right way. They opened it up for all the kids, and they didn’t make it biased to one particular group. That’s the same formula North Carolina should follow in order to keep things fair.” Another parent tells On3: “We’re being penalized because our children are going through public schools, and we can’t afford to put them in a private school.” (link)

Sportico’s Eric Jackson examines the evolution of NBA players as increasingly savvy investors and notes that “more players are conversing about deal flow and sharing investment opportunities, rather than boasting about their new sports car purchase or fancy summer home. The latter won’t ever stop, of course, but for many teams, especially ones led by veteran players who have earned multiple contracts, it’s now normal to discuss their venture and equity matters.” New Orleans Pelicans forward Larry Nance Jr. tells Jackson: “It’s been pretty drastic as to what guys are comfortable and open to talking about in the locker room. Before I could go to a vet and ask him what he does, but it wasn’t openly discussed. Now we talk about it on the plane, on the bus or in the locker room. There’s no time where it’s inappropriate.” Jackson points out that one of the catalysts for this culture change is the “shared relationships players have with trusted agents and financial advisors who are introducing and providing guidance on deal opportunities.” Meanwhile, the “rise of NIL only makes players entering the NBA more comfortable navigating the various pitches that come their way, especially since they’re screening deals earlier alongside their financial teams that were created in high school and college. Already in business mode, it’s becoming normal for rookies to arrive to the league as millionaires, an occurrence that will have a ripple effect with knowledgeable and financially astute newbies around to groom the next generation.” More from Jackson.
