USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s markup hearing on Thursday will include a bill from Congressman Bob Good (R-VA) that states a college athlete "may not be considered an employee of an institution, a conference or an association.” Co-sponsors for the bill include Committee Chair Virginia Foxx (R-NC). Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds: “The bill, Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act, will be up for debate Thursday in a hearing. It is a narrow bill that would prohibit college athlete employment – one of the NCAA's essential asks of Congress. Bill is intended to be a ‘rider’ with other legislation. Cumberlands wins its first LEARFIELD Directors' Cup to cap off a year with three Patriot national championships. AD Chris Kraftick: “Winning the Learfield Cup is a tremendous achievement for our institution. It shows the commitment to excellence that starts with Dr. Cockrum and runs through our administration, faculty and staff, coaches, and most importantly our student-athletes. We had a vision years ago with this department and to see it come to fruition has been incredibly rewarding. Following the recent departure of Men’s Basketball HC Brennen Shingleton, Texas Wesleyan has seen a second high-profile HC depart “at an odd time,” with a Football HC change in March. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Mac Engel notes the athletic department is undergoing a budget reduction, of which AD Ricky Dotson says: “For a small, private college these are the realities we are all facing. There have been some adjustments made to the way we do scholarships. There are rising costs, and it has changed the way we’ve had to do things, and it’s made our coaches re-evaluate the way they do things. It’s had some impact, but I don’t think it will have any impact on our teams from a competitive standpoint.” Shingleton on his departure: “In my personal opinion it’s easy to decipher to that conclusion why a person left but that’s not it. Those sorts of things happen (in NAIA sports). The reason I am leaving is because I was offered an opportunity to work in oil and gas, and this is an opportunity that might not come around again. […] I love Texas Wesleyan, and I still want to help the program. I will help raise money for the athletic department. I still want to be incorporated with them. This is a decision that is based on what is best for my family.” (link)

Missouri Baptist Men’s Basketball HC Preston Ingram departs to accept the same position at Maryville (NCAA DII). The Spartans immediately name AC Taylor Jarvis as the new HC. AD Jeff Fore: “When we stepped back and looked at who we wanted in our next leader in the men's basketball program it became very evident early on that this individual was already in our program. Coach Jarvis not only helped recruit our current roster but was also the key individual in recruiting our incoming class. While this will be his first head coaching job, I can tell you that after several conversations with him, I know he is ready.” (link)

West Virginia Tech elevates former Concord (NCAA DII) HC and current Golden Bears AC Kenny Osborne to lead the program.
