Arizona State AD Graham Rossini will earn a base salary of $650K in his first year with annual increases of $50K in each of the next two years of a three-year contract. Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman reports Rossini’s bonuses include $50K for a Big 12 football championship, $50K for a non-New Year's Six bowl appearance, $125K for a College Football Playoff championship game appearance, $75K for a New Year's Six bowl game appearance, and $125K for a national championship game appearance in men's or women's basketball or baseball or softball. If the Sun Devils win a national championship in any of their other varsity sports Rossini will pick up a $25K bonus. He’s in line to receive a bonus of $100K for a Learfield Directors’ Cup win and $50K for a top-20 final ranking. Additionally, should ASU terminate the contract at any point without cause, it would owe Rossini the entirety of his salary for the remainder of the term. He would not be able to seek employment as another school's athletic director during the three-year agreement without the consent of ASU's president. Karpman also reports Rossini "will forfeit and repay any performance bonuses" when "the achievements that were the basis for such payments are vacated, diminished or in any way affected by sanctions, whether self-imposed by ASU or imposed by the conference or the NCAA, resulting from violations of NCAA or conference rules by Rossini or by a coach or other program member and either Rossini knew or should have known that the violation had occurred or was occurring or Rossini failed the follow the policies and procedures established for the program to prevent such violations." The Arizona Board of Regents will vote on whether to approve the contract at its June 20 meeting. (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua joins the For Good: Stories from Notre Dame podcast and discusses his transition from NBC to ND, football scheduling, the student-athlete experience, the future of college athletics and more. Bevacqua says football scheduling is getting more difficult in part because programs in the newly realigned Big Ten and SEC now have even more difficult conference schedules. “And if you're a Michigan or if you’re an Alabama or Georgia and you fight your way through that conference schedule, if you're with a head coach of one of those teams and you're now told by your athletic director now you have to go play Notre Dame, that's tough.” Bevacqua also explains the Fighting Irish have a twofold obligation as part of the NBC deal. “We owe it to our media partner. We need those big-time, great, wonderful rivalries that the whole country pays attention to, and really the strength of our schedule is going to be more important than ever in working our way into that expanded playoffs.” On potential future conference affiliation in football, Bevacqua says: “I feel better about our independence sitting here right now than I felt even when I first came into the role. … Independence is part of the DNA of Notre Dame football. And I I believe that vehemently, and the fact that we have the new NBC deal and the new CFP deal, we are, from a revenue standpoint and an access standpoint, we're in great shape.” Further, the expanded College Football Playoff means going undefeated is likely no longer a prerequisite, and “to win national championships – and we have to win a national championship in football – you have to keep knocking on the door.” Full Q&A. Johnson v. NCAA plaintiffs’ co-counsel Paul McDonald responds to the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s advancement of HR 8534 by calling the bill unconstitutional. McDonald predicts that if the bill is enacted it “would never survive judicial challenge” and maintains “the only thing accomplished by the NCAA in needlessly dragging out the recognition of college athletes as hourly employees like their fellow students is to significantly increase the cost of resolution borne by its membership.” (link); USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz points out that it remains to be seen whether the GOP-controlled House’s leadership will put the bill up for a full vote. It’s also unclear how it would be received in the Democrat-controlled Senate. U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) say they’re looking for something more comprehensive. Booker: “Just picking at one of these threads and not looking at the holistic thing is a little problematic to me.” Blumenthal adds: “I think there are ways to provide for greater fairness and equity without making athletes formally employees of their schools.” But, he continued, "as much as I may have reservations about employment status, I want to achieve the same kind of benefits and rights that employment status would provide." Asked whether recent NCAA rules changes aimed at improving athlete benefits are sufficient, Blumenthal said: "I think more needs to be done. The NCAA has provided a start." (link); The NCAA in a statement voiced its support for the legislation, adding: “Building on the proposed [House] settlement, by partnering with Congress to affirm that student-athletes are not employees, we can continue our progress in building a model for college sports that provides fair opportunities and experiences to the broadest number of young people possible.” (link)

The Toledo Blade’s Dave Briggs points out there is a “perception that Toledo generates and spends the most money on sports in the [MAC]” and notes that “only half of that is true. UT does lead the league in fund-raising, ticket sales, and actual revenue. It does not lead the league in spending, its budget ranking fifth.” How? “Because of college sports’ dirty little not-so-secret reality, which is that all but the biggest athletic departments lose tens of millions of dollars and are underwritten by student fees and university subsidies. Some schools just financially prioritize sports more than others, and this is where Toledo lags behind its rivals.” Briggs observes that the argument could be made that as UT faces an “existential enrollment crisis,” the school shouldn’t be worrying about athletics. However, the opposite argument could also be made. Now, with the sporting iron hot and the school in desperate need of a spark, it may be exactly the time to strike.” Rockets AD Bryan Blair says at this week’s NACDA Convention he’s “talked to other ADs — I won’t name any schools — who say, ‘We made it to this BCS bowl game or we made this NCAA tournament run … and we missed our mark. We didn’t invest when we had the opportunity, and now we’re trying to regenerate that,’ which is a whole lot harder than building on the success you had. I never want us to look back and go, ‘Golly, I wish we could go back to 2024 and recreate that magic we had and build off that.’ … “You look at the success we've had based on what we've been given. If we just do a little bit more, and we get everybody to stretch a little bit more, what could we accomplish together and how amazing would that be?” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde won’t be offended by conferences selling naming rights to their league. “Desperate times call for desperate dollar grabs. And if these sorts of everything-is-for-sale gambits help schools avoid cutting or gutting Olympic sports, so be it. Get it done. … As the powers that be have come to grips with this onrushing new economic reality, all revenue options are on the table. The NCAA already has cleared the way for commercial logos to be placed on fields and courts, with advertising on jerseys also under consideration. This would be a conference-level attempt at a semi-solution.” There is one potential sticking point, Forde continues. “Because if TV mega-advertiser Allstate decides it wants to sponsor the Big 12 for a decade, that logically would mean it needs to spend less on college athletics advertising on ESPN and Fox. Same with State Farm, Nissan or any other companies that could be contemplating league sponsorship – the money would have to come out of somewhere, and that somewhere could be the pockets of the major TV players. … [But] if the Big 12’s mathematically incorrect name has to die so the league’s cross country teams can live, that’s a deal that might need to be struck.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand believes Paramount’s decision to end merger talks with Skydance is unlikely to have an immediate effect on CBS Sports but stops short of making a long-term prediction. “The NFL deal runs through 2033 (although the league likely will use its out in 2029), and its Big Ten, PGA Tour, and UEFA deals run until 2030. Its March Madness deals end a couple of years later. Under David Berson, the CBS Sports leadership has a steady hand and a ton of experience. That said, virtually all the major broadcasters are currently investing heavily in sports in pursuit of reach and live advertising. Brian Roberts and Comcast have been gunning for the NBA; Bob Iger and Jimmy Pitaro have worked out deals with the CFP and NCAA, and will soon renew Disney’s own NBA deal. Fox has essentially turned most of its primetime hours over to live sports. So while Paramount is surely happy that CBS has several big-time sports deals locked in for the next decade, it remains an open question whether it can bid on additional rights given its current predicament.” (link)

Northwestern AD Derrick Gragg will be leaving his role to serve as the university’s VP for Athletics Strategy. In his new position, Gragg will focus on NIL and other major initiatives. Gragg will remain in his AD role until his successor is found and will advise President Michael Schill and others on the AD search. The new AD and Gragg will work together in certain areas with both reporting to Schill. Gragg tells ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: "I wanted to be able to help the university move forward in the new era of college athletics. These departments are going to have to expand some and have to look at expanding differently. I don't know if the traditional athletic director is going to be able to do all of these things. It's a good time for the institution to be on the front end of changes." (link)

The Big 12 is considering a private equity investment of $800M to $1B from Luxembourg-based CVC Capital Partners in exchange for a 15-20% stake in the league, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes a “portion of the money would go directly to the 16 conference members, and the partnership would give the conference access to CVC's investment services and clients.” One says the talks are “pretty serious,” but Dodd notes several league presidents need further convincing. Dodd also points out the CVC investment “would likely require the Big 12 to stay together long term. That might require some sort of assurance for CVC that a new grant of rights would be signed in 2031. … The discussion is to the point that three sources told CBS Sports a small working group of three Big 12 presidents have started digging down on the proposal.” (link)
|
The Big 12 is also exploring a naming-rights partnership that “may be one of the most lucrative and unique sponsorship deals in college athletics history.” According to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, the “latest conversations within the conference have centered on retaining ‘12’ in the ‘Big 12’ name and removing ‘Big.’ The corporate sponsor name would replace ‘Big’ — a significant change but one expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars. … Several corporations are expected to be involved in the process for the naming rights, most notably the Allstate insurance company. A possible new name of the league has emerged as ‘Allstate 12.’ … A final determination has not been made, and any agreement must gain the necessary support from the Big 12 presidents and chancellors. A Big 12 spokesperson declined to comment when reached Thursday.” (link)
|
Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports name possibilities for the Big 12, should it sell naming rights to Allstate, include “The Big Allstate Conference” or the “The Allstate 12 Conference.” McMurphy also reports the multiyear deal could earn the league between $30-$50M annually to be divided among its 16 league members and adds: “The Big 12 also is considering a financial company for its naming rights, which would pay the league slightly more than Allstate, sources said. However, the league has been more engaged with Allstate, a source said.” (link)
|
Conference USA is also “deeply exploring a multimillion-dollar naming rights sponsorship,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports Globe Life is one of the companies under consideration. “Possible new league names include Globe Life Conference USA or Globe Life Conference. Conference USA officials have spent months in deep discussion about a naming rights deal, and there is wide support within the conference for such a move. … A deal could be finalized within the next year.” (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz provides updates from today’s U.S. House on Education and the Workforce Committee’s markup hearing, during which Committee Chair Virginia Foxx claimed the bill “safeguards the economic freedom of student athletes from misclassification by NLRB bureaucrats.” Foxx also said student-athletes “deserve the freedom to play the sport they love and receive a high-quality education at the same time. Reclassifying these athletes as employees could undermine that freedom and threaten their academic journeys, turning the sports they love into a chore instead.” Ranking member Bobby Scott (D-VA) called the bill “partisan” and “overly broad” and called for it to be rejected. He warned the bill would “make things even worse” for college athletes who should not have their ability to organize foreclosed. Congressman Bob Good (R-VA), who sponsored the bill, expressed concern that if student-athletes can be become employees, it will result in increased expenses for athletic departments. A vote is slated for later today. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker brings some much-needed passion to the role, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who points out that Baker engaged in an “agitated discussion” with DraftKings College Sports Editor Collin Sherwin at this week’s NACDA Convention. Sherwin tells Dodd there was “no cussing [from Baker], but I did get hit with a ‘leave the kids alone.'" Sherwin acknowledges his fundamental difference of opinion with Baker on sports gambling but says there’s no bad blood between them. “He certainly has a different opinion. As he reminded me, he has spoken to multiple attorneys general and gaming commissions and they all say the [illegal offshore] player college prop market is not a problem. That's what he says. I would say, if it's not an issue, it's going to become one if we don't legalize these markets. There's no incentive for anyone in Costa Rica or the Isle of Man to [oversee prop bets]." (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake and The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner also recently spoke with retired AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco, who asserted the strength of the SEC and Big Ten is “now a real concern. It’s not that they don’t have able leaders — and they’re friends and have been friends of mine for a long time. That’s not the issue. The issue is that it has become Darwinian. They really threw their weight around in this whole CFP process and we just didn’t have enough leverage to fight it.” Aresco on the Group of 5’s future: “What the G5 have to be careful about is to be forced into a separate division. That would be the worst thing. We had to be sure to always stay with the top guys because that’s how we viewed ourselves. … It’s why I’ve opposed this G5 playoff. … If you do anything that separates you from the [Power 4], it gives them more of a reason to say you’re not really in our division anymore. If you ever lost access to the College Football Playoff, you’ve got big problems. That’s your lifeblood. You can’t lose access to that. You play those teams. What you don’t want is to be like FCS and be in a separate division. You still play those teams but they don’t view you the same way.” Aresco also called realignment a “complete mess. You’ve got things that just don’t make sense. Let’s be honest, how does it make sense that Stanford and Cal are playing on the East Coast? It just doesn’t make sense. But that’s what we have to deal with now. Whether some of that is self-correcting down the road, I don’t know. I have no idea. But we’ll see.” Full podcast. (link)

The Pac-12 is looking at holding a “casual” media event Las Vegas on July 10, and JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous proprietor reports: “I’ll have more details soon, but I’m told it’s not an official media day. It’s a small gathering featuring Washington State coach Jake Dickert, Oregon State’s Trent Bray, a couple of players from each team, and some media members. Commissioner Teresa Gould is also expected to attend. I’m told by a source that the event is more of a conversation than a traditional media day. The schools will also hold separate events with local media on their campuses.” Canzano also points out that if the event comes together in Las Vegas, it will “piggyback on the Big 12 and Mountain West Conference football media days. That Wednesday (July 10) happens to be the final day of the Big 12’s two-day football media day at Allegiant Stadium and the first day of the MWC’s two-day media event at Circa Resort and Casino.” (link)

The Wisconsin men’s and women’s hockey teams may take part in a Big Ten MTE at Wrigley Field following the NHL Winter Classic next season. The conference hasn't announced details, but the plans being discussed include three Big Ten men's hockey games and one women's hockey contest involving Wisconsin and Ohio State, according to the Wisconsin State Journal’s Todd Milewski, who adds: “The men's teams involved, sources said, include Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. Minnesota is the odd one out from the seven-team men's hockey conference.” With the Winter Classic slated for December 31, it’s likely the games will be played in early January, though a date has yet to be set. Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley says he labored over whether to take the Lakers job or stay at UConn and tells Dan Le Batard: “One of the worst takes I’ve heard is that this was a leverage play by me to improve my situation at UConn. I don’t need leverage here. We’ve won back to back national championships at this place. This was never a leverage situation for me. I’ve had a contract situation in place for a couple of weeks, and the financial part in terms of salary has been done for a while. There’s some other parts like NIL and staff salaries and some different things that I want adjusted that I’m not comfortable with. But the sense or the idea that this was just a conspiracy to get me a sweeter deal at UConn is just lazy and not [true]. It was truly a gut-wrenching decision for me because I was really – Sunday night going into Monday where I had kind of a deadline in my mind – I was like torn and I didn’t know really what I was going to do until I went to bed.” Asked if there was an amount of money that would have caused him to leave UConn for the Lakers, Hurley replied: “To leave all that behind, there probably is a number. I don’t know what that is.” (link)
