Bemidji State AD Britt Lauritsen sits down with The Bemidji Pioneer’s Jared Rubado for a long Q&A about the Beavers’ position in the NSIC, scholarship funding, the transfer portal and more. On the portal and funding: “When we are in our Division II sports, especially as one of the lowest-funded institutions in the NSIC, finding that level of competitiveness is always a challenge. Our coaches have to figure that out year in and year out. There's always that concern of whether or not we can keep up with that.” Given no school is fully funded in all sports, Lauritsen notes there is an opportunity to make significant competitive growth in a short amount of time with just a bit more funding. Asked how NIL plays a part: “There are opportunities to get involved in the NIL space at an entry level that is impactful for our student-athletes. Probably about 80% of our student-athletes are paying 90% or more of their tuition and fees and room and board. We're not fully funded, so NIL is life-changing and impactful, even if it's a couple of meals here or there. To me, NIL is a place of opportunity for us if we can dial in on what it looks like to educate our region and our community about what NIL can do.” On the competitiveness of certain programs that may be struggling: “For me, one of the hardest things for my competitive brain to remember is that outside of the win-loss record, there are still things to win and lose in a program. I have to keep my eye on the most microscopic level of wins and losses within the program and within the culture of a program so I can try to make those assessments from there. As long as I've got coaches who I feel like are rowing in that same direction with me, that's a good movement.” More. (link)

The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce voted 23-16 in favor of sending the Protecting Student-Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act to the full House. (link); Sportico’s Michael McCann points out that HR 8534 comes with potential legal risks for the NCAA: “In a world where college athletes can’t unionize, NCAA rules regulating college athlete compensation would continue to face potential antitrust lawsuits. The only way the NCAA can preempt antitrust litigation would be through the non-statutory labor exemption. The exemption reflects U.S. Supreme Court decisions holding that when management and labor negotiate rules impacting wages, hours and other terms of employment, those terms are exempt from antitrust scrutiny. Although a settlement can resolve antitrust litigation, it can’t immunize the NCAA from antitrust lawsuits.” The bill would also not prevent states from recognizing student-athletes as employees. McCann notes that in its current form, the bill “does not contain a preemption clause and its declaration that college athletes are not employees is prefaced by ‘notwithstanding any other provision of Federal or State law.’ Should college athletes be deemed employees in a state, colleges in that state would likely gain a recruiting advantage. That, in turn, could incentivize other states to make the same determination. The same mentality led to a sudden flood of states overthrowing NCAA rules and approving NIL legislation.” More from McCann. (link)

Lubbock Christian has broken ground on a $7.2M, 28K square-foot expansion of the Rip Griffin Center. The expansion will include a new training facility, weight room, two practice gyms, hospitality suite and offices for Men’s and Women’s Basketball. AD Andrew Sorrells: “The groundbreaking of the Griffin Family Center for Student Athlete Development is more than just turning dirt; it's turning a page in the LCU athletics' story. This state-of-the-art addition signifies our unwavering commitment to excellence and marks a bold step into the future of LCU athletics. The CIAA Football Championship will move from Salem, VA to Durham, NC, starting in 2025 through 2027. Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams: “Our recent media rights partnership with HBCU Go gives us the opportunity to showcase our top teams in a centralized location, again where the football championship has thrived in the past.  The CIAA will have an opportunity to engage in the community beyond the game in a way that supports the mission of the conference.” (link)

The Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Rules Committee has recommended rules for shoes competitors can wear and a modification to lane violations.  Under the proposed shoe rule, the committee wanted to bring the NCAA in line with the current language of the World Athletics rules regarding eligible shoes worn in cross country and indoor and outdoor track competition. The lane violations proposal centers on indoor and outdoor track and field races run on a curve. Competitors would face disqualification for stepping on or over the lane line to their left with more than one step anywhere on a curve for the entirety of the race, also in line with World Athletics rules. Other proposals include allowing pacing light technology in non-championship events, redefining the failure to participate rule to only pertain to scored competitions, and adding a competition manager position as part of meet management, among others. Inflation held flat in May at 3.3%, and the Federal Reserve announced it would keep interest rates at their current level. The central bank has penciled in just one interest-rate cut for this year. (link)
