Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue updates on a pair of AD searches from the Lone Star state. West Texas A&M is down to six candidates: two internal candidates, an RMAC AD, an LSC AD and a pair of DI administrators. At Texas Permian Basin, the Falcons expect to announce a candidate “before the end of August or early September.” (link)

Incoming Emory & Henry AD Kyle Sensabaugh chats with the Bristol Herald Courier’s Allen Gregory about stepping into the chair at his alma mater on July 1 after serving as Asst. AD/Women’s Basketball AC. On his path and approach in taking over the Wasps: “I didn’t have a set time period, but becoming an athletic director was definitely a goal and it was something I’ve been working toward. As a former athlete here, this job is personal to me and I welcome the challenge. […] I want to continue the process. We’ve started several new projects, including a student athlete success center. We have a lot of things going on that we’re proud of.” As the Wasps conclude their final year in the DII provisional membership process, Sensabaugh: “The SAC has great teams who have had success on regional and national, so we knew it was going to be challenge. From top to bottom, we’re up against high-level competition in every sport. […] We have a tremendous coaching stuff. We have great facilities in some areas, and there are some areas that need improving. We’ve had discussions about that and it’s something we’re going to work toward, but nothing is on paper yet. […] I want to make sure all our teams are competitive in NCAA Division II and gain the excitement back around our campus and community. I love this school and I’m going to do everything I can to make that happen.” (link) 

Coming out of its annual Board of Directors meeting earlier this month, the CIAA announced a number of initiatives. The conference will collaborate with the SIAC for both football champions to compete in the BCHOF Legacy Bowl starting in 2025, in lieu of a week 0 game proposal. The CIAA will select the teams competing in its FB title game by ranking teams one through 12, not by divisions. On the future of the basketball tournament, the league will open bidding for its event in January to host in 2027 and beyond. The conference will also explore sponsoring Women’s Flag Football, with “each institution interested should work directly with the conference regarding its interest and ability to secure funds through the NFL/RCX/NCAA to support their participation.” (link)

The possibilities of the GOP retaking the Senate and the reelection of Donald Trump to the White House are real enough that college sports leaders should plan for what comes next, according to Extra Points publisher Matt Brown. “A world where Ted Cruz or Bill Cassidy or Rand Paul becomes the chair of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and where Bob Good and Burgess Owens can get higher education bills to the House floor, is absolutely a world where a bill that explicitly bans the concept of college athlete employment could get passed and signed by the President.” Brown goes on to observe that “economists, lawyers and academics are correct when they point out that generally, conservatives tend to support policies more aligned with the free market, and preemptively locking out a class of individuals from participating in the formal workforce, while allowing the NCAA to set a different price cap on revenue sharing…would not be a very Free Market-y policy. But the Real Life House of Representatives and US Senate are not some ideological debating societies where everybody makes decisions that completely line up with consistent ideology. It’s a place where folks are willing to make all sorts of ideological compromises in the name of Triggering The Libs or Getting On Cable News or Placating An Important Donor. … For athlete advocates or business owners who want a different world…I think now is the time to at least create a plan B. And reporters ought to recognize that this scenario could absolutely happen.” (link)

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue unpacks conversations regarding the potential creation of the Texas Athletic Conference, which West Texas A&M President Walter Wendler envisions would include some combination of FCS and DII schools. “There would be symmetry in this Texas collection of colleges, as all the schools in the conference would play football.” Sources tell Hogue multiple presidents have considered the possibility in recent months and at least one meeting has been held. Abilene Christian (DI) President Phil Schubert remarked: “If you’re asking me would I love to see an all-Texas conference at some point? You better believe I would, and if I ever get the chance to bring something like that about or have an influence on bringing Texas schools together under one brand to play Texas sports together, especially football, man, we would jump at that chance. If there is a state in the country that could [have its own conference], it’s Texas. … We would certainly be interested in that.” Schools in the proposed TAC include ACU, Tarleton State (DI), UT Arlington (DI), Lamar (DI), Stephen F. Austin (DI), UTRGV (DI), Texas A&M-Commerce (DI), Incarnate Word (DI), Houston Christian (DI), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (DI) and West Texas A&M, which Hogue notes would need to transition from DII to DI. Hogue adds, however, that “every source contacted for this piece was “skeptical [the TAC] would ever come to fruition.” (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Danny Reeves has blocked new Title IX rules proposed by the Biden Administration. The injunction prevents the U.S. Department of Education from “implementing, enacting, enforcing, or taking any action to enforce the Final Rule, Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance,” which was set to begin August 1; however, the injunction only involves Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia and West Virginia, whose attorneys general filed the initial complaint. Reeves: “At bottom, the Department would turn Title IX on its head by redefining ‘sex’ to include ‘gender identity.’ But ‘sex’ and ‘gender identity’ do not mean the same thing. The Department’s interpretation conflicts with the plain language of Title IX and therefore exceeds its authority to promulgate regulations under that statute.” (link)
