Auburn AD John Cohen on challenging decisions ahead given the House settlement: “None of us wants to take anything away from any of our sports. But there’s these challenges and these laws that are colliding and we’re in the middle of it. That part is not fun. But we do recognize that this is a new frontier.” (link)
|
Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart on the same topic: “There's a lot of details that we're going to need clarity on before we can make some of those decisions. But I don't want to lose sports from our program. We got into this to educate and to compete. That's it. Educate kids and to teach them how to compete and we are so far from that in this conversation right now. We're just trying to preserve that opportunity. I always tell people, there's three things we want to make sure we always get right for student athletes. One, we provide generational opportunity. I don't want to lose opportunities for young people. Another piece is generational leadership. We create really great leaders in college sports. And I don't want to lose that. The last piece is generational finance. We teach people how to do their lives well. It prepares them to go take care of their families and that's important to me.” (link)

Missouri’s Laird Veatch provides insights on how the Tigers will attack facility needs in Columbia: “The Memorial Stadium improvement project is unquestionably the No. 1 thing that we need to be focusing on. But there are some key things that need to be done that aren’t wants, they’re needs — particularly related to our playing surfaces and a few of our sports: baseball, track, soccer, tennis. We have some things that just need to be done. [...] The advocacy from me on those playing surfaces and the basic things needs to be, ‘We gotta find a way — we gotta find a way as soon as possible,’ whether that’s working with donors, working with our institutional partners, finding a way within our budget process to make some of those things happen.” (link)

On the latest episode of The Career Hustle, D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle sits down with UT Arlington Senior Assoc. AD for Development Ira Childress, who talks about his path from Baldwin, Michigan to Arlington, Texas. A bestselling author of the book Beating the Odds: From Poverty to Prominence, Childress talks about how he stepped into leadership and an answered email from a P4 AD who invested in him that has made a lasting impact in his life. Childress also shares the process he uses to make career decisions that will drive him to understand all areas of college athletics. Childress explains that he chose to leave his development role at Dartmouth for an external role at LSU in part because it offered him a chance to broaden his skill set. “So, as I’m moving through my career – and one day my goal is to be a Division I athletic director – I will be able to say you know what, I actually spent time on both sides. I've done some internal work and I've also done a lot of external stuff. So, I think sometimes when you're going through that career process you want to think about not just where you are right now, but where you want to go and what steps will help you get there.” Full conversation on Connect. Florida State Baseball HC Link Jarrett on check-swing calls: “I’ve pushed with the umpiring groups for a review of the check swing. I would like to be able to challenge that. I told them … this started back in September. I said, ‘Every camera in the stadium has a view of that.’ You have some random plays come up that are not captured (by cameras) — those are captured. And it’s a very, very difficult call. I think in umpiring, it is the hardest of calls to make.” The Seminoles fell to Tennessee in their opening CWS game on Friday, and there was a tricky check-swing call late in the game, but Jarrett does not blame the loss on that: “It’s tough. You remember how the game ended far more than you remember how the game started. There were plays that we needed to make that would have changed the course of [Jamie Arnold’s] start, the back end of the game, and we didn’t. We didn’t handle some of the things that needed to be handled. And as you do that, and create opportunities for them and add pitch count to your starters and put more stress on the defense … it adds up. So the end of the game was one piece of the game. But you can go back to moments in the game and at-bats in the game where, if it was a little better, maybe this is not a conversation of trying to hang on to a three-run lead or a two-run lead or a one-run lead or a tie game. You may have put this thing away.” Jarrett is optimistic the NCAA will make those plays reviewable by instant replay in the future. (link)

South Carolina AD Ray Tanner, who just made his third Baseball HC hire in 12 years, defends against critics who question the state of the Gamecocks’ program, “I’m extremely confident that we’ve hired an outstanding coach that’s ready to go. As [new HC Paul Mainieri] said, he’s not interested in a three-year plan, a five-year plan. He wants to win next year. … We do not have apathy. We have expectations, and you want to try to meet them. And you’ve got one of the best ever. He (Mainieri) is the all-time winningest active coach in baseball, so that gives us a good chance. … I’m not going to tell you that I got it wrong before. I know what you’re inferring. But Chad Holbrook won a lot of games here, had some success here. So did Mark Kingston. He just came off a 37-win season. … Those guys were just a few swings away from being where they needed to be.” (link)

Federal bankruptcy Judge Michael Romero partially granted Colorado FB student-athlete Shilo Sanders’ motion to dismiss John Darjean’s lawsuit against Sanders, which accuses him of misusing the bankruptcy discharge process and limited liability companies to avoid paying a previously decided $11M settlement. Sportico’s Michael McCann: “Romero refused to ‘rule out application of the alter ego or veil piercing doctrines’—a win for Darjean. But in language that favors Sanders, the judge underscored how Darjean ‘faces a high burden’ at trial since piercing is an ‘extraordinary remedy.’ Romero also ruled in a mixed way concerning Sanders’ assertion Darjean failed to state a claim for fraudulent intent. The judge found that Darjean’s complaint includes specific assertions regarding Sanders’ NIL rights, his NIL contracts, music equipment, vehicles and other assets. He also noted that news reports and YouTube video regarding Sanders and his brothers buying a house and gifting it to their dad contained the requisite detail. But Romero was more critical of how Darjean described Sanders using LLCs and NIL contracts to transfer rights. The judge blamed Darjean for failing to investigate Sanders’ claims more thoroughly. Romero has given Darjean until June 27 to file an amended complaint to correct defects.” (link)

NFL VP/Head of Flag Football Stephanie Kwok talks about raising awareness for flag football ahead of next month’s 280-team NFL Flag Championships July 19-21 in Canton. She tells SBJ’s Ben Fischer: “Flag football is a sport that obviously I personally love. It’s a sport that I wish I had the opportunity to play when I was younger because I loved football. ... So, making sure that anyone who wants to play football has an opportunity to play football, and flag football increases those opportunities, whether it's for girls in the U.S. or for kids internationally as well. For me it's the ability to just scale that.” Kwok also says the NFL sees flag football as a development project first and a revenue-generator second. “It’s about growing that awareness and participation. It’s promising that Toyota is involved and interested, but the primary goal is awareness and participation.” (link)

Deneé Barracato, Deputy AD for Operations and Capital Projects at Northwestern, stopped by 1Q to talk about her role, her career, what keeps her centered, and being a mother working in sports. As a leader in the college athletics industry, Barracato emphasizes the importance of focusing on the experiences of student-athletes.

Contract terms for new Eastern Kentucky AD Kyle Moats include a four-year deal with base pay of $215K annually, plus another $107K in possible athletic & academic incentives. If Moats chooses to exit before the end of June 2026, he’d owe the university $400K, a figure that reduces to $215K for the rest of the agreement. In the other direction, if the university wants to make a move before July 1 of 2025, Moats would be owed $800K, which decreases by $150K each subsequent year. Data per CollegeAD. (link)

Fox 32 Chicago’s Chris Kwiecinski puts together a list of potential candidates for Northwestern: Kansas AD Travis Goff, Bradley AD Chris Reynolds, Tennessee Senior Deputy AD/COO Allen Greene, Loyola (Chicago) AD Steve Watson, Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier, Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Sarah Baumgartner & Northwestern Deputy AD/AVP for Development Jesse Marks. Kwiecinski in conclusion: “When considering the best fit, Travis Goff, who took over for Jeff Long at Kansas, cleaned up the mess left behind by former football coach Les Miles and oversaw renovations at Kansas' football field, would be someone that NU could trust to lead the program into the future. However, his price tag might be too high. Baumgartner is considered a rising star. Her expertise with capital projects cannot be ignored, as well as her experience in the Big Ten. Someone like Baumgartner doesn't have the resume and reputation she does for no reason. She's ready to lead a department. That's if the department decides to look outside of Evanston. If not, elevating Marks, who has done plenty for the university behind the scenes, would be the right move.” (link)

SEC ADs discuss the future of facility upgrades as the financial impact of the House settlement looms. Georgia’s Josh Brooks: “That’s been a very common statement from a lot of athletic departments that the days of building, building, building are going to slow down. I do anticipate that as revenues get shifted, that’s a good possibility. That’s why I’m glad we were able to get so much done these last few years to get us caught up to where we’re in a great position facility-wise. I do anticipate that the era of building will slow down.” Texas A&M’s Trev Alberts: “If those are facility enhancements that generate additional revenue to you to fill a gap that you need, now that’s a different piece. Things that don’t generate revenue for you, does it look different? Probably.” Accordingly, Florida AD Scott Stricklin notes: “We’re generating like seven times more revenue off of that facility (baseball’s $65 million Condron Family Ballpark). There are some facility projects that might help you make more money to help take care of some of this. We’ve got to invest a little bit to make a little bit.” South Carolina’s Ray Tanner: “With the settlement, there are a lot of dollars that are going in a different direction. It doesn’t mean we’re going to cease…but it’s got to be more strategic than ever.” (link)

New on Collegiate Sports Connect: Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison sits down with Collegiate Sports Associates President/Connect Co-Founder Drew Turner from the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss hiring coaches, recruiting administrators, building relationships with university leadership and more. Harrison also discusses how the Govs are approaching revenue sharing. In answer to a question from trustees, Harrison said: “Here's the great part about it at the mid-major level and where we are: There is no revenue to share with you. What comes in goes out, and we spend it on the kids. But no, it's a lot to take in. I mean, every day something changes, and I still don't think we understand the landscape or what any of the stuff really means. What I do know is the impact it’s going to have short-term because of the settlement on Austin Peay athletics. You’re talking 30% almost of our NCAA distribution that is going out the window to help offset the settlement. So, for us, we’ve got to look at what that’s going to involve. My message to our staff was this: We know we’re going to deal with this, but we cannot impact the student-athlete experience. … We have a large group of people here at NACDA. Unfortunately, we may not have as many people at NACDA next time. But I’ll do a lot of things before I impact how we house, feed, travel and take care of our student-athletes.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates is spearheading the study and College Hockey Inc. will assist in “collecting data and conducting interviews.” Board of Regents member Denise Ilitch, who has led the charge to bring a women’s hockey team back to the state, expects the study to wrap up by early-to-mid-fall. The Men’s College World Series started with two thrilling walk-offs yesterday & today features the first-ever appearance for Kentucky. Wildcats AD Mitch Barhart provides perspective on the long road to Omaha for the Wildcats’ program: “To continue to have to hear that was getting a little old (that he needed to replace HC Nick Mingione). I don’t know if getting to Omaha was the be-all, end-all, but people just wanted us to get into the conversation nationally. You want to be relevant. You want to feel like you belong in the neighborhood. The new stadium gave us a chance. I felt like Nick gave us a chance, too, and I thought he was closer than it looked from the outside. But when you’re trying to build something special, it’s such an intricate puzzle, and it’s amazing how sometimes when just one piece is missing, it’s so difficult to finish. [...] Anybody that knows the way I’ve walked with coaches understands that, by and large, we’re a place that wants to grow people into success. Obviously, we needed to take a step forward, but I think one of the great things Nick does is self-evaluation and seeking feedback. As he’s matured as a head coach, he leaned on and listened to a few people he really trusts and said, ‘Help me get better. What do I need to do differently?’ He listened to all those things and he humbled himself and he made adjustments — to his team, to his staff, to himself and his approach.” More from The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker. USC Men’s Basketball HC Eric Musselman and his staff holed up in a Manhattan Beach home to focus on filling out the Trojans’ roster this season, and AC Will Conroy tells the Orange County Register’s Luca Evans that it was all business. “You just felt like, if [AC] Michael Musselman was over there on the phone with a recruit, and [AC] Anthony Ruta was talking to a recruit, it’s like, ‘I can’t be on FaceTime with my wife. I gotta be FaceTiming with a kid.’” Evans further sets the scene: “Musselman would hand-dry his USC T-shirts on the front porch. Michael Musselman and Ruta slept in a bunk bed. They would all stroll down The Strand for dinner together every night, hitting one pizza joint so often Conroy joked to the owner he should put an Eric Musselman special on his menu.” Musselman says it “wasn’t a frat house. It was a Portal House.” The staff spent a month in the house during which they filled out the roster, and Evans notes: “The sanctuary in Manhattan Beach, more than just a home base, became a recruiting tool. Musselman would encourage staffers to take FaceTimes with recruits out on The Strand, strategically placing miles of beach in the background behind them. Quickly, the floodgates opened, a wave of carefully targeted veterans wooed by Musselman’s fire and the promise of USC’s brand.” Ultimately, Musselman says: “I don’t want to do what I did last year, but I want to do what we did in other years, which is create a team that cosmetically, people are like, ‘I want to go watch that team play.’ And then, a team that opposing teams respect for how hard they play.” (link)

With the expanded College Football Playoff now lasting longer than March Madness, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner wonders whether fans will lose interest at some point. “Diehards will remain engaged, but will casual fans, so vital to the CFP audience, maintain interest for 32 days? Many of them associate college football with Saturdays and with New Year’s Day. In the expanded playoff, five of the 11 games, including the semifinals and championship, will be played on weeknights. Why the tilt to weeknights? The NFL, of course. … It’s bad enough for the CFP that the final weekend of the NFL regular season falls between the quarterfinals and semifinals. Even worse: The entire NFL wild card and divisional playoff rounds unfold between the semifinals and the championship game. How many fans will re-engage with college football on the evening of Monday, Jan. 20?” To mitigate this issue, Wilner suggests opening the college season in full on Week 0. “The change would add immense flexibility to the competition calendar. Conferences could move up their championship games to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, thereby allowing the CFP to start earlier, end earlier and limit conflicts with the NFL’s postseason.” Another option Wilner offers is getting rid of conference championship games and starting the CFP in the second week of December but acknowledges that “no changes are imminent. Conference commissioners and media executives will watch the CFP unfold next winter, fingers crossed that the 32-day sprawl and NFL postseason don’t kneecap interest.” (link)

Sportico’s Anthony Crupi observes that Fox’s Friday night college football lineup has some big shoes to fill, as the former occupant of that window, WWE SmackDown, averaged 824K adults aged 18-49 per episode. Fox, however, could not generate enough ad revenue from the property to justify bringing it back for a sixth season, and Crupi explains that, per media buyer estimates, the average unit cost for a 30-second spot in SmackDown sold during last year’s upfront bazaar for a little over $50K, a figure “nowhere near in keeping with the show’s deliveries. (By way of comparison, ABC’s The Bachelor, which trailed SmackDown in the demo by some 1,300 viewers, commanded a rate that was three times higher.) And while the pricing disparity is arguably more a function of ingrained snobbery than measurable performance, it’s now clear that fans who supported the Friday night wrasslin’ juggernaut weren’t sufficiently upscale for Fox’s advertising partners.” Enter the Big Ten. “From Fox’s perspective, the combination of additional games and the underutilized real estate that is Friday prime—a window that isn’t exactly crowded with live sports options—made this a no-brainer. Fox already is all but synonymous with football, as the sport accounts for more than 60% of the network’s overall consumption, so a push into the wilds of fall Fridays is a good fit for the brand and its bottom line. While it’s early in the upfront sales process, media buyers say that units in the Friday night games are pricing between $10,000 and $15,000 higher than what Fox was getting for SmackDown.” More from Crupi. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen officially signed Bill 1393 into law, which allows institutions to compensate student-athletes for their NIL “if permitted or authorized by the policy of an athletic association or school policy, a court order or a settlement agreement.” The bill also states athletes should not be qualified as employees based “solely on the fact that the student-athlete earns compensation for the use of the student-athlete’s name, image, or likeness rights or athletic reputation, or is engaged in name, image, or likeness activities pursuant to the act.” Pillen signed the Bill on the Huskers’ campus with Football HC Matt Rhule, Men’s Basketball HC Fred Hoiberg, Women’s Basketball HC Amy Williams and AD Troy Dannen looking on. Major League Baseball has disciplined umpire Pat Hoberg for violating the league’s gambling rules. The statement from MLB: “During this year's Spring Training, Major League Baseball commenced an investigation regarding a potential violation of MLB's sports betting policies by Umpire Pat Hoberg. Mr. Hoberg was removed from the field during the pendency of that investigation. While MLB's investigation did not find any evidence that games worked by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way, MLB determined that discipline was warranted. Mr. Hoberg has chosen to appeal that determination. Therefore, we cannot comment further until the appeal process is concluded.” For his part, Hoberg denies betting on baseball and is appealing the decision. He has not umpired a game this season.
