From Fox Sports’ John Fanta: “As the St. John's search for a new athletic director begins, there's an interesting dimension to one of the candidates, Ed Kull. The current Fordham AD is not only in the running at SJU, but also a primary candidate for Marquette's vacant AD position, sources tell Fox Sports.” (link)

The Daily Memphian’s John Martin breaks down the pros and cons of the Memphis AD job. Pros include that it “might just be the best athletic director job outside of the power structure,” momentum in football and success in non-revenue sports. On the football momentum: “The Tigers are on the verge of a new-look, wholesale renovation of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, which is long overdue. They’re operating with a significant NIL package thanks to FedEx (the results from which are already paying dividends). Ryan Silverfield is on solid footing thanks to a 10-win season and a resounding win over Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. As important as basketball is to the school, it’s imperative that the Tigers football team maintain their winning ways.” Cons include the need to raise money, the pressure that comes with high expectations, and the “Penny Hardaway situation.” Martin says of the latter: “It’s just, unfortunately, undeniable at this point. As my colleague Geoff Calkins wrote about Tuesday, there may have to be a decision sooner or later on that front. Nobody in Memphis wants it to be the case, but there’s no world where any coach not named Hardaway would be returning for an eighth season in 2025 if the Tigers don’t make it into the NCAA Tournament this season.” (link) The D1.dossier for the Memphis job is available for those interested in guiding the Tigers. The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Missouri State is ready to assist those of you looking to lead in Springfield. New Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen on his use of a dossier: “D1.dossier was a huge asset during the education and interview process. Having high level, detailed information at your fingertips was extremely helpful. I would recommend it if anyone is going through the process, saves time and energy digging trying to find the correct information.” (link)

UAB AD Mark Ingram talks with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle about what the House settlement means for the Blazers, navigating the changes in the industry and the $21M basketball project that is expected to drive secondary revenue. Ingram on finding more creative ways to drive revenue to help offset the settlement costs: “Yeah we’re for sale, Kristen. If D1.ticker or Connect wishes to buy UAB Athletics, any sponsorship is on the table. We’ll paint the football field your corporate colors. Whatever we need to do to get you involved, we’ll do it. We absolutely have to be more open-minded than ever before, less conservative, if you will, in the manner we approach those sorts of things. Again, if we could generate more revenue, we would be generating more revenue. That doesn’t mean that we can’t or we won’t, but to have to increase it at the rate that this requires is where the challenge is. That’s why you have got to find a way to also eliminate some of your expenses, which is never enjoyable. … We’re already running really, really lean as it is.” Full interview on Connect. (link)

While some believe the future of collectives is murky in light of the House settlement, The Collective Association President Russell White tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “In no world are Power 4 universities and their fan bases OK being on a level playing field with each other. Back in the day, it was the brown bag at the restaurant. [When] NIL came around, it became collectives, and it was an arms race then. Whose fan base and whose donor base can give more – it’s going to be the same. … If everyone's playing with $22M, and you're going after the same recruits, what's going to set you apart? And that's where your collective is going to come in. The collectives will still play a massive role as that third party.” SMU AD Rick Hart believes that “[NIL dollars are] going to come mostly from corporate partners and marketing spends. Collectives and individuals who are giving to them and running them…I hear a lot about the fatigue from those individuals. I'm not sure many of them got into this thinking they were gonna do it long-term. When there is a model that maybe, for the most part, replaces the very important role they've played, you're likely to see less of that activity, at least structured through a collective.” (link)

Kansas expects to exceed its revenue projection by $3M for the fiscal year, but the department also incurred $5M more in predicted expenses, resulting in a likely shortfall of approximately $2.1M, according to the Lawrence Journal-World’s Henry Greenstein. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff noted the department set a record in ticket sales at $26M, and CFO Pat Kaufman explained that strategic investments in football and men’s basketball, including new coaching contracts, as well as department-wide facility investments and deferred maintenance, resulted in the additional $5M in expenses. The department will cover the $2.1 million shortfall using its operating reserves. Goff on planning for the House settlement: “We’ve got two programs that drive a vast majority of the revenues, not just uniquely to KU, but across intercollegiate athletics. We need to be competitive in those two programs. … At the same time, we’ve all made a commitment and believe wholeheartedly in the commitment to non-revenue programs and the opportunities that has long provided students.” Greenstein also notes KU brought in $143.5M in fundraising, much of which is earmarked for ongoing facility upgrades to Allen Fieldhouse and the Gateway Project. Coastal Carolina plans to break ground on an 8,000-seat convocation center for its basketball and volleyball teams in 2026. A cost for the project has yet to be specified, but President Michael Benson says at least a portion will be funded through penny sales tax revenues. Benson adds: “You get one shot at a piece of land like that. And that’s going to be the entryway, kind of that front door into our campus, and draw people into the center of our campus to get involved in other programs.” The Chanticleers also plan to add new seats to St. John’s Stadium (softball) and a new scoreboard and ribbon board at Brooks Stadium (football), among other facilities projects. Freshly minted Chants AD Chance Miller noted during his introductory press conference that CCU’s commitment to investing in facilities was a factor in his taking the job. “That’s what really fired me up. I wanted to take this position because President Benson had talked about that convocation center, the new track, the indoor football facility opening up. I think that gives you a lot of different opportunities. That could really help this university, this community and this athletics department grow.” (link); Miller says he also looked at the “growing population here, the growing enrollment, the thriving tourism that surrounds this area. And once I started really digging into it, I said, ‘You know what? This is really a premier job in college athletics today.’ I saw the room for growth. I saw the potential. So, as I started looking at it, I looked at what President Benson shared in his vision and his strategic plan, and I saw the three pillars that he had out: learning, living and legacy. And I couldn't have been more fired up at that point because I have spent the past 11 years doing those things at South Carolina, and I knew I could bring them here.” Full presser. (link)

Speaking of South Carolina, the Gamecocks have issued an RFP to develop nearly 900 acres of land near Williams-Brice Stadium. The RFP “seeks to identify private development partners who wish to pursue a comprehensive land use agreement with the university. The eventual agreement could bring new recreational, dining, lodging and retail options to the area, which includes 885 acres of undeveloped USC-owned property adjacent to the Congaree River, west of the existing Long Family Football Operations Facility, and 12 additional acres near Williams-Brice Stadium.” Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner: “Issuing this Request for Proposals is the next critical step in a lengthy process. We are thankful to state leaders for supporting our vision to transform this underutilized region of the Midlands to benefit our fans and residents alike.” The ultimate scope of the project is yet to be determined. James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes that plans for distributing back damages in the House settlement (75% of TV revenue in back damages to football, 15% to men’s basketball, 5% to women’s basketball and the final 5% divided by the remaining athletes) “could potentially be good for budget planning, but use caution assigning the same compensation to everyone on the roster for an individual sport. The IRS will likely view that as excess private benefit. The All-American and the redshirt are not the same.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: “Good point made by Katie. Schools or third parties should not be paying every athlete on a specific team the same amount. There needs to be an assessment of the value of specific athletes’ (or specific categories of athletes’) NIL.” (link)

UCF will pay 10 non-conference football opponents nearly $8M in the coming years, with for those games – Jacksonville State ($1M), UMass ($1.2M), Louisiana ($1.3M) and James Madison ($1.3M in 2029) – each requiring a guarantee of at least $1M. Knights AD Terry Mohajir notes that “guarantees are just the business you must do now. At my previous school [Arkansas State], I was known as the guy who got the most money [from guarantee contracts]. I got $1.8M, $1.7M, so I’ve been on the other side of these things. … It’s tough to get an FBS Group of 5 [school] for under a million dollars.” Mohajir also says he’s open to renewing the rivalry with USF but notes it’s been difficult since the Bulls’ schedules are locked until 2031. “They’re not moving anything for us, so we’re not going to move anything for them. It’s just a matter of when they’re open. When I got here, they were booked through 2030.” Also from Mohajir: “I need home games. Would [Group of 5 teams] be amenable to not doing a home-and-home? Because right now, a home-and-home with a Group of 5 is not advantageous for us. That puts us in a bad financial situation.” (link)

SEC football coaches informed ADs last month that if keeping walk-ons meant reducing their salaries, they’d be all for it. Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin: “The coaches agreed we would pay out of our own salary, give us less money to our salary, take whatever it costs to have walk-ons, and we’ll pay for it out of our salary. … That [roster] cap number coming down, eliminating walk-ons, you’re going to see the Florida State situation [in last year’s 63-3 Orange Bowl loss to Georgia]. The move now is people have started to not play in bowl games so they don’t get hurt to go in the portal. And I’m not even saying starters. I’m saying we had players on special teams, backups on defense, offensive teams, like, ‘Why are you not playing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, New Year’s Six bowl?’ And they’re like, ‘We don’t want to risk getting hurt covering a kickoff because we’re going in the portal.’” Kiffin says the coaches were told “the financial aspect has not been a piece at all of this. This is about potential lawsuits down the road. … They can use different terms around it, but they’re getting rid of walk-ons. It’s a major concern.” (link)

EvanMiya.com publisher Evan Miyakawa has conducted a study on the roster construction techniques used over the last several seasons to determine the best strategies for success on high-major men’s basketball teams. Questions considered in the study included: Can you have too many transfers? Is transfer recruitment more critical now than high school recruitment? How valuable are returning players? Do you need freshman talent to be elite? Do you need star players on your roster? Should you prioritize returning players over transfers? Is there a “formula” for roster composition? Broadly speaking, Miyakawa concludes at least 50% of a team’s roster should consist of returning players. As such, coaches should prioritize signing players who will stay for at least two years. In examining all of the 1 seeds from the past three NCAA Tournaments, Miyakawa found that “every team had a preseason roster rank inside the top 30, with 10/12 having top 15 rosters. Almost all of the 1 seeds leaned mostly on returning players, as only two teams had returning players play less than 50% of their team’s minutes (Alabama 22-23 and UNC 23-24).” Meanwhile, the “top 10 teams, on average, had returners play about 60% of the available minutes during the season, while teams that missed the tournament were only at 51%. The reliance on transfers was way lower for top 10 teams, at just 23% of the minutes, compared to 35% for high majors that failed to get a tourney berth. Top 10 teams also took one less transfer in the offseason on average than teams that missed the tournament.” Lots more, including how teams with a minimal amount of returning players and teams who maximized freshman minutes fared. Memphis is expected to interview up to 10 candidates for its AD post, including Interim AD Jeff Crane, Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison and former Tigers Executive Assoc. AD for Administration/current Kansas State Alumni Association President Adam Walker. According to the Daily Memphian’s Tim Buckley, all three all either have or will interview this week via Zoom with the university’s search committee. Buckley adds that “Crane has emerged as a serious candidate with significant backing in the Memphis community” and notes that candidates are interviewing with a six-person advisory committee. Memphis hopes to have a hire in place before the Fourth of July holiday. Previous reports identified Tennessee Deputy AD/Chief Resource Officer Ryan Alpert, Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White, Virginia Deputy AD Ed Scott and Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt as candidates. (link)

House v. NCAA plaintiffs’ co-counsel Steve Berman confirms to On3’s Pete Nakos that the settlement is on track to disperse 75% of TV revenue in back damages to football while 15% would go to men’s basketball, 5% to women’s basketball and the final 5% divided by the remaining athletes. Starnes Law antitrust attorney Jay M. Ezelle tells Nakos that if U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken approves this structure of distributing damages, it could be looked at as a framework for the future vis-a-vis Title IX. “Title IX pervades everything you do and an athletic department has to be in compliance with Title IX. So, it is thoughtful and the right thing to do to be considerate. This is an issue that has not been litigated. And so, that presents uncertainty. You have to address that uncertainty. That being said, the people who just say, ‘Let’s just distribute this 50-50 in order to comply with Title IX’ are not looking at the flip side of that. Because if you do it that way, you may actually be in violation of antitrust laws. Because you’re doing something that’s against the market. You’re taking something from a market that is generating more revenue and giving it to another market. And so those two things could be in conflict.” Ezelle also believes institutions will follow Wilken’s lead when it comes to sharing revenue. “The smart people who have analyzed and are being thoughtful – and we’ll hear from them – they’ll say, ‘Let’s wait and see [how] Judge Wilken comes down and use that as a guide.’ Because at that point you have a federal judge saying, ‘This is a fair way to distribute your money.’” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner acknowledges the risk of accepting private equity investments in college sports, “but you know what’s also risky? Not selling ownership. The Big 12 cannot afford to get lapped by the SEC and Big Ten. It cannot risk a not-so-slow fade into irrelevance fueled by tight budgets, limited resources and second-rate talent. Football success is far too important – not because the presidents crave athletic glory but because they crave what athletic glory can provide: Unsurpassed marketing for the university writ large. The enrollment apocalypse is coming, folks, and on-field success might be the most effective antidote.” An industry source tells Wilner: “This is macro higher-education stuff driving some of these decisions by [presidents]. It’s pretty understandable through that lens.” According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the “consensus view is that America will hit a peak of around 3.5M high-school graduates sometime near 2025. After that, the college-going population is expected to shrink across the next five to 10 years by as many as 15 percentage points.” As such, Wilner contends that schools will need every advantage they can get to attract students, and “no branch of the university is more visible than football. Nothing else attracts 50,000 people to campus. Nothing else draws millions of television viewers. … Should the presidents sell a stake in the conference? That probably depends on the terms. Should they give the matter serious consideration? Because of a daunting macro environment two decades in the making, they don’t have a choice.” More. (link)

Leon County (FL) Judge John C. Cooper has denied the ACC’s motion to dismiss Florida State’s lawsuit over personal jurisdiction issues. Cooper ruled that the ACC “entered into a sports media business venture in Florida centered on the home athletic events of the Seminoles and Miami,” according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker. Cooper said he believes Florida has a “unique interest in adjudicating the dispute” because it involves a state entity (Florida State) that gets money from the state. There are also potential issues of sovereign immunity in the ACC-FSU dispute in North Carolina.” Baker notes that “one key jurisdictional issue is whether the ACC does enough business in Florida to be sued here. Cooper described the FSU and Miami home games that ESPN and the ACC Network air through the ACC. To that point, Cooper explained: “I believe that’s business conducted in Florida by ACC along with FSU and the University of Miami.” He later called the ACC’s business “significant” in the state. More from today’s legal arguments. (link)

Florida State has also completed the sale of $309M in public bonds for improvements to Doak Campbell Stadium, according to College Football Realignment publisher Bill Farley. “Great news for the Seminoles as the cost of financing is in the 4% to 5% range. This should help mute the private capital buzz. Compare this cost of financing with the Big 12's proposed payday loan at 17%, or the University of South Florida University's $200M private bank loan at 6.68% for their new $340M stadium. USF's choice of private capital cost them as much as $113M (And they're an AAU university?)” Farley says he will soon publish a story “detailing how USF went off the rails with private capital, and how other universities can learn from their mistake.” (link)

The Knight Commission led a session at NACDA titled “House Case Impact: Blueprints for the Future of Division I.” Panelists included UNC Asheville AD Janet Cone, Abilene Christian football student-athlete Anthony Egbo, Jr., former NFL player/Tennessee student-athlete/Knight Commission member Jacques McClendon, Illinois Chief Commercial Officer Tom Moreland, Quinnipiac President/Knight Commission member Judy Olian, Knight Commission CEO Amy Privette Perko and outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith. During the session, Smith remarked that “at the end of the day, we need to change our thought process. It's not about a scholarship. It's not about Alston money. It's not about NIL. It's not about revenue share. It's a damn compensation package. And we need to get to that. And everybody should be compensated differently, whether that includes NIL or not. But it's a different compensation package. We need to start talking that way, because that's what it is, and face reality with it.” Cone spoke about the D I-AAA and FCS Athletics Directors Associations’ plan in regards to the House settlement: “We initiated collaboration to create a defensible model of college sports that fit our subdivisions. Our goal is to create a sustainable model that is philosophically and legally defensible, and we keep our subdivisions competing in Division I. Let me say that again: Our goal is to stay in Division I, compete at the highest level with broad-based championships, and also receive shared athletic revenues.” Olian noted that while the NCAA and Power 4 are “bearing significant costs in absolute dollar terms,” the Power 4 will benefit from the windfall football broadcast revenues. … The non-football conferences and teams won't be benefiting from the football broadcast windfall, and in percentage of budget terms, the mid-major conferences and schools are carrying as high, and sometimes a higher burden than the Power 4. That's what one New York Times commentator called ‘financial Darwinism,’ survival of the fittest, or should we say, the richest.” More. (link)

Bestselling author/prominent Michigan observer John U. Bacon reports former Wolverines Football AC Chris Partridge has retained attorney Tom Mars and a Michigan lawyer who are “digging into how and why Warde Manuel fired Partridge without any investigation or opportunity for him to tell his side of the story and what Manuel told the Board of Trustees about the grounds for termination.” A source tells Bacon there will be "stunning new information.” Bacon adds: “They're apparently getting close to filing a lawsuit in federal court. As always, we shall see. No telling what's actually on the table until the suit is filed. But a heads up that the Partridge case apparently ain't over.” (link)

ESPN’s Pat McAfee remains unsigned with College GameDay, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who explains McAfee has a separate contract that allows ESPN to license his daily show on its network and YouTube. Last fall, McAfee suggested he may leave the show’s cast after The Athletic conducted a survey in which nearly half of the 3,100 responses said they did not care for McAfee on the program. “I have heard you all very loud and clear since the beginning of my stint with GameDay. It’s one of the biggest reasons why I have not re-signed a contract with the legendary show. I’m not right for some crowds and the ‘distinguished’ College Football folks are definitely one of those. Excited to enjoy the rest of this year, that’s shaping up to be a GREAT one, and then see what the future holds.” ESPN analyst/GameDay mainstay Kirk Herbstreit told McAfee on his program last year that if McAfee didn’t return to GameDay, then Herbstreit wouldn’t either. He added that he was “dead serious” at the time. Marchand reports ESPN and McAfee are working toward a deal, but nothing has been signed yet. (link)

The 2025 and 2026 home-and-home football series between Ole Miss and USC has been canceled. Rebels HC Lane Kiffin says the cancellation happened “a while ago” due to USC’s move to the Big Ten and uncertainty about the SEC moving to a nine-game slate. “I do think some of those things might be taking place around the conference, just because of realignment of the teams that went to the Big Ten and different scheduling on their part, and then down here, there’s an uncertainty about nine conference games. There’s been a lot of talk that that’s the direction it’s headed, nine conference games, and the difference in scheduling people, and people potentially having extra games with the Playoffs.” Additionally, Rebels AD Keith Carter last week remarked: “I anticipate at some point we'll probably go to 9 SEC games. I think that's going to happen. I think you're seeing some of these more marquee matchups maybe coming off the books because of that." (link, link)

Colleges and universities will be unable to submit corrections to student FAFSA records in bulk until the first half of August, the Department of Education has announced. According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the “net effect is that some students with special circumstances still cannot receive final financial aid offers or financial aid for the 2024-25 school year.” NASFAA President/CEO Justin Draeger: “The idea that some college students are hoping to begin classes in a matter of weeks and are still unable to get a final financial aid offer is unacceptable. … In the end, it’s the most vulnerable students who will once again be harmed by this delay. This patchwork functionality is not how the system is intended to operate and is exactly the kind of situation that we hope to avoid for next year’s FAFSA. That’s why we continue to urge the Department to ensure that the entire FAFSA system — from the application itself to processing and the ability to make corrections — is up and running smoothly at the time the application goes live."
