Colorado State AD John Weber tells The Coloradoan he never imagined he would one day be leading the athletic department. “I told someone the other day this was not on my bingo card in terms of career opportunities, but I’m unbelievably grateful and honored and humbled at the opportunity to do this. It’s a fantastic opportunity.” Post-House settlement and into the future, Weber emphasizes the need for CSU to find ways to take “strategic advantage” of the changes. “We’ve got to have an innovator's mindset on this change and be able to take advantage of that change. Whether it’s logos going on fields, patches going on jerseys, whatever that is – we need to be a leader in that, and we need to make sure that we’re taking full advantage of those opportunities. We’ve got to find every opportunity that we can going forward. If I look around campus, like the building that we’re sitting in (McGraw Athletic Center) that’s right next to an unnamed Moby Arena, and we’ve got unnamed soccer and softball complexes out there, I think there’s a lot of opportunity for us to engage across local, regional and national levels for sponsorship at Colorado State.” The Rams have seven home football games this fall for the first time in program history, including rival Colorado for the first time since 1996, and Weber says the renewal rate on season tickets is over 90%. Weber also explains CSU is using this summer to analyze strengths and weaknesses. “I use the term ‘stop, start and keep.’ What do we need to start doing, what should we stop doing and what should we keep doing. I talk through that with all of our coaches, all of our administrators just to make sure we have a really good view on optimizing what we really need to be focusing on.” More from Weber. (link)

With La Salle reinstating its baseball program after a three-year absence, Explorers AD Ashwin Puri talks about the resources needed to rebuild: “There’s some low-hanging fruit. We need some new infrastructure in the form of a scoreboard that needs to be upgraded. We need to look at our seating and fan amenities, but I think that’s going to take some time. We need to look at the pitching and batting cages, especially during the wintertime. Making sure the field is operational and the turf is in great shape, and making sure the kids can work out, practice, and play [on it] year-round. … We’ve got a lot of ideas, but we’ve got to sort of refine those to determine the path to fundraise for them. So the time in which it’s done is a function of our supporters stepping up and buying into the vision. We are putting that [vision] together now, and we’re going to be out very publicly with an aggressive fundraising strategy in the near future.” (link)

Long Island AD Elliott Charles talks about the importance of growing the Sharks’ brand. “One of the main challenges is figuring out how to tell our story. Telling the story is part of keeping that brand identity. Bringing every single sports program to its best potential and really focusing on who we are as LIU and the Sharks is the number one challenge.” Charles also discusses the evolving challenges associated with leading an athletic department and observes: “As we look at what it’s taking to recruit students in and be successful, coaches and us as administrators and everyone have to rethink the whole thing right now. I don’t know that it’s as much of a sales approach as it truly is about meeting people where they are and really becoming a better investigator of what people are looking for out of higher education and out of intercollegiate athletics.” So far, Charles says he’s been focused on “really being intentional about what looking like a calming force is and really coaching the coaches and being there to serve them and ask them what they need. Just getting organized and then taking a step back to really look at our big facilities and capital plan opportunities.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter breaks down who's in the three classes as part of the House settlement and who will be receiving back damages payments. The three classes consist of: “1. Scholarship P5 (plus Notre Dame) football and men's basketball players who played between June 15, 2016 and Sept 2023. 2. Scholarship P5 (plus Notre Dame) women's basketball players who played between June 15, 2016 and Sept 2023. 3. All DI athletes not in the other two classes who played prior to July 1, 2021, and who received NIL compensation between July 1, 2021 and September 2023. The reason the three classes are divided up in this way is because of broadcast revenue. … The broadcast NIL payments not made to the first two classes account for the vast majority of the $2.8B in back damages. And football accounts for the vast majority of those broadcast NIL payments. Which is the reason football players will receive around 75% of the $2.8B.” Winter adds that “football players are not receiving 75% of the $2.8B because 75% of the class members are football players. They are receiving that percentage because their NILs were used in TV broadcasts that accounted for the vast majority of the revenue accounted for in the $2.8B. As discussed in articles this week, this is why these percentages can be a good starting point for schools in determining how to make and value NIL payments to athletes in the future. They are based on the market value of the NILs of the athletes in those sports.” (link)

A potential naming rights deal between the Big 12 and Allstate is "not done," but something is expected “by early next year or maybe by the end of the fall football season," according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, who believes “naming rights has way more support within the league than the private equity route.” Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde adds that it looks like Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark is "getting out in front and maybe the ACC and Jim Phillips not quite being on that cutting edge and being in more of a reactionary position.” Forde notes he is in favor of selling the conferences naming rights if it will keep programs from cutting sports; however, he wonders whether Allstate's other sponsorships across college sports would change with sponsoring a conference name. Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Chris Vannini worries that many of the people making these decisions won’t be there “when the bill comes due” and notes: “You’ve got a lot of people in college sports now who aren’t necessarily thinking about the long term. And if you’re the ACC, if you’re the Big 12, you have to do whatever you can to compete with the Big Ten and the SEC. ... Try to keep it as close as you can, but it may be a futile effort.” (link)

South Carolina professor/Bill Sutton & Associates Principal Bill Sutton shares his thoughts on the future of student-athlete employment. Sutton believes more student-athletes “will want to share in the revenue that is being produced regardless of their sport (all athletes contribute to the brand equity of athletics at the university), thus the size of the purse will need to increase.” Further, he believes the need to generate more revenue will be most easily met by adding more games, which will make it more difficult for athletes to earn income outside of their “jobs.” And, ultimately, Sutton predicts college athletes will become full-time employees and students. As such, he suggests the following system be part of the contractual obligations for employment: “Upon the completion of his or her employment eligibility at the collegiate level (4-5 years) or at the culmination of a career as a professional athlete, the ‘Employee’ is guaranteed the following educational benefit: Any employee who has satisfactorily completed his or her agreed-upon athletic employment is eligible to attend any educational institution that has served as an employer in a similar arrangement to receive a tuition-free enrollment in an undergraduate degree program of his or her choosing. This reciprocity between participating employers better serves the employees who have satisfied their terms of employment and may prefer an institution that is closer to their preferred location or may offer a course of study that is unique and not readily available elsewhere.” More from Sutton. Teamworks VP for Business Development, Collegiate Kevin Barefoot joins AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NACDA Convention and provides insight into a collaboration with the NCAA on a suite of NIL tools, including the creation of an NIL “data warehouse” that will aim to increase transparency via an anonymous data dashboard. Barefoot also talks about the development of a service-provider registry akin to Yelp and Rate My Professor, the creation of various educational tools, and the launch of Teamworks Wallet, a digital banking solution that will provide an efficient process for student-athletes navigating NIL and benefits-related payments. Barefoot explains that one reason it’s important for student-athletes to adopt these products is because “we are automating as many of the disclosures as possible. In calendar year ‘23, of all of the disclosures that came through INFLCR, which is the most-used NIL platform in Division I, only about 14 or 15% were manual disclosure. So we're automating a lot of disclosures to make it easy on the student-athletes. They’re not going to fill out any forms they don't have to.” Barefoot also points out that “in terms of their access to the tools and making sure that they get value out of it, we’re integrating it into the tools that they're already using. The last thing that athletes want to do is download another app and remember another login and have to go to a place to get things that they need.” More on ADU. (link)

Deion Sanders Jr. approached several Colorado football players and staffers in a new video produced by Sanders Jr.'s Well Off Media company to ask about reports of compulsory attendance at a Lil Wayne concert in the spring. Asked how many people he had to punish for not going to the concert, which included an opening performance by Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders, Director of Football Sports Performance Maurice Sims remarked: “Bro, what is up with that? People are making up weird stuff. … It was not mandatory to go to the concert. Guys just wanted to be good teammates. Did they even know that [Shedeur Sanders] was performing? I didn't know." Buffs WR LaJohntay Wester said he neither attended the concert nor had been told he was required to go, and CU defensive back Shilo Sanders added: Dad didn't even know we were going to perform. But I wouldn't even say nothing about it. Bro, they didn't even know we were going to perform. They messed up the lights. They couldn't even see who was on stage. … How'd we decide in five minutes but Dad already predetermined it?” (link)

The first three months of 2024 were the worst the pay-TV business has ever seen, according to analysts at MoffettNathanson, who estimate the industry lost a record 2.37M subscribers – a decline of 6.9%. Worse, digital TV-subscription services like YouTube TV are also starting to wobble,” according to Business Insider’s Peter Kafka. MoffettNathanson estimated that Google's pay-TV service lost 150K subscribers in the first quarter, and Kafka notes: “The most obvious rationale for the loss: People who were using YouTube TV to watch the NFL – the most powerful draw on TV – canceled the service once the season ended. If that's true, then the glass-half-full perspective is that those subscribers will return this fall when the season starts up again. But the glass-more-than-half-empty take is that the churn problem that bedevils most pure-play streaming services, like Disney+ and Max, is also a problem for the digital pay-TV services that give you a bundle of channels. Of course, the fact that all these digital TV services are easy to add and drop is a good thing for you, the person who pays for TV. And it has been a selling point for those services. But it's also one reason the TV industry is increasingly trying to get consumers to sign up for long-term contracts — just like the old-timey cable-TV days.” (link)

From Fox Sports’ John Fanta: “As the St. John's search for a new athletic director begins, there's an interesting dimension to one of the candidates, Ed Kull. The current Fordham AD is not only in the running at SJU, but also a primary candidate for Marquette's vacant AD position, sources tell Fox Sports.” (link)

The Daily Memphian’s John Martin breaks down the pros and cons of the Memphis AD job. Pros include that it “might just be the best athletic director job outside of the power structure,” momentum in football and success in non-revenue sports. On the football momentum: “The Tigers are on the verge of a new-look, wholesale renovation of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, which is long overdue. They’re operating with a significant NIL package thanks to FedEx (the results from which are already paying dividends). Ryan Silverfield is on solid footing thanks to a 10-win season and a resounding win over Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. As important as basketball is to the school, it’s imperative that the Tigers football team maintain their winning ways.” Cons include the need to raise money, the pressure that comes with high expectations, and the “Penny Hardaway situation.” Martin says of the latter: “It’s just, unfortunately, undeniable at this point. As my colleague Geoff Calkins wrote about Tuesday, there may have to be a decision sooner or later on that front. Nobody in Memphis wants it to be the case, but there’s no world where any coach not named Hardaway would be returning for an eighth season in 2025 if the Tigers don’t make it into the NCAA Tournament this season.” (link) The D1.dossier for the Memphis job is available for those interested in guiding the Tigers. UAB AD Mark Ingram talks with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle about what the House settlement means for the Blazers, navigating the changes in the industry and the $21M basketball project that is expected to drive secondary revenue. Ingram on finding more creative ways to drive revenue to help offset the settlement costs: “Yeah we’re for sale, Kristen. If D1.ticker or Connect wishes to buy UAB Athletics, any sponsorship is on the table. We’ll paint the football field your corporate colors. Whatever we need to do to get you involved, we’ll do it. We absolutely have to be more open-minded than ever before, less conservative, if you will, in the manner we approach those sorts of things. Again, if we could generate more revenue, we would be generating more revenue. That doesn’t mean that we can’t or we won’t, but to have to increase it at the rate that this requires is where the challenge is. That’s why you have got to find a way to also eliminate some of your expenses, which is never enjoyable. … We’re already running really, really lean as it is.” Full interview on Connect. (link)

While some believe the future of collectives is murky in light of the House settlement, The Collective Association President Russell White tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “In no world are Power 4 universities and their fan bases OK being on a level playing field with each other. Back in the day, it was the brown bag at the restaurant. [When] NIL came around, it became collectives, and it was an arms race then. Whose fan base and whose donor base can give more – it’s going to be the same. … If everyone's playing with $22M, and you're going after the same recruits, what's going to set you apart? And that's where your collective is going to come in. The collectives will still play a massive role as that third party.” SMU AD Rick Hart believes that “[NIL dollars are] going to come mostly from corporate partners and marketing spends. Collectives and individuals who are giving to them and running them…I hear a lot about the fatigue from those individuals. I'm not sure many of them got into this thinking they were gonna do it long-term. When there is a model that maybe, for the most part, replaces the very important role they've played, you're likely to see less of that activity, at least structured through a collective.” (link)

Kansas expects to exceed its revenue projection by $3M for the fiscal year, but the department also incurred $5M more in predicted expenses, resulting in a likely shortfall of approximately $2.1M, according to the Lawrence Journal-World’s Henry Greenstein. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff noted the department set a record in ticket sales at $26M, and CFO Pat Kaufman explained that strategic investments in football and men’s basketball, including new coaching contracts, as well as department-wide facility investments and deferred maintenance, resulted in the additional $5M in expenses. The department will cover the $2.1 million shortfall using its operating reserves. Goff on planning for the House settlement: “We’ve got two programs that drive a vast majority of the revenues, not just uniquely to KU, but across intercollegiate athletics. We need to be competitive in those two programs. … At the same time, we’ve all made a commitment and believe wholeheartedly in the commitment to non-revenue programs and the opportunities that has long provided students.” Greenstein also notes KU brought in $143.5M in fundraising, much of which is earmarked for ongoing facility upgrades to Allen Fieldhouse and the Gateway Project. Coastal Carolina plans to break ground on an 8,000-seat convocation center for its basketball and volleyball teams in 2026. A cost for the project has yet to be specified, but President Michael Benson says at least a portion will be funded through penny sales tax revenues. Benson adds: “You get one shot at a piece of land like that. And that’s going to be the entryway, kind of that front door into our campus, and draw people into the center of our campus to get involved in other programs.” The Chanticleers also plan to add new seats to St. John’s Stadium (softball) and a new scoreboard and ribbon board at Brooks Stadium (football), among other facilities projects. Freshly minted Chants AD Chance Miller noted during his introductory press conference that CCU’s commitment to investing in facilities was a factor in his taking the job. “That’s what really fired me up. I wanted to take this position because President Benson had talked about that convocation center, the new track, the indoor football facility opening up. I think that gives you a lot of different opportunities. That could really help this university, this community and this athletics department grow.” (link); Miller says he also looked at the “growing population here, the growing enrollment, the thriving tourism that surrounds this area. And once I started really digging into it, I said, ‘You know what? This is really a premier job in college athletics today.’ I saw the room for growth. I saw the potential. So, as I started looking at it, I looked at what President Benson shared in his vision and his strategic plan, and I saw the three pillars that he had out: learning, living and legacy. And I couldn't have been more fired up at that point because I have spent the past 11 years doing those things at South Carolina, and I knew I could bring them here.” Full presser. (link)

Speaking of South Carolina, the Gamecocks have issued an RFP to develop nearly 900 acres of land near Williams-Brice Stadium. The RFP “seeks to identify private development partners who wish to pursue a comprehensive land use agreement with the university. The eventual agreement could bring new recreational, dining, lodging and retail options to the area, which includes 885 acres of undeveloped USC-owned property adjacent to the Congaree River, west of the existing Long Family Football Operations Facility, and 12 additional acres near Williams-Brice Stadium.” Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner: “Issuing this Request for Proposals is the next critical step in a lengthy process. We are thankful to state leaders for supporting our vision to transform this underutilized region of the Midlands to benefit our fans and residents alike.” The ultimate scope of the project is yet to be determined. James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes that plans for distributing back damages in the House settlement (75% of TV revenue in back damages to football, 15% to men’s basketball, 5% to women’s basketball and the final 5% divided by the remaining athletes) “could potentially be good for budget planning, but use caution assigning the same compensation to everyone on the roster for an individual sport. The IRS will likely view that as excess private benefit. The All-American and the redshirt are not the same.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: “Good point made by Katie. Schools or third parties should not be paying every athlete on a specific team the same amount. There needs to be an assessment of the value of specific athletes’ (or specific categories of athletes’) NIL.” (link)

UCF will pay 10 non-conference football opponents nearly $8M in the coming years, with for those games – Jacksonville State ($1M), UMass ($1.2M), Louisiana ($1.3M) and James Madison ($1.3M in 2029) – each requiring a guarantee of at least $1M. Knights AD Terry Mohajir notes that “guarantees are just the business you must do now. At my previous school [Arkansas State], I was known as the guy who got the most money [from guarantee contracts]. I got $1.8M, $1.7M, so I’ve been on the other side of these things. … It’s tough to get an FBS Group of 5 [school] for under a million dollars.” Mohajir also says he’s open to renewing the rivalry with USF but notes it’s been difficult since the Bulls’ schedules are locked until 2031. “They’re not moving anything for us, so we’re not going to move anything for them. It’s just a matter of when they’re open. When I got here, they were booked through 2030.” Also from Mohajir: “I need home games. Would [Group of 5 teams] be amenable to not doing a home-and-home? Because right now, a home-and-home with a Group of 5 is not advantageous for us. That puts us in a bad financial situation.” (link)

SEC football coaches informed ADs last month that if keeping walk-ons meant reducing their salaries, they’d be all for it. Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin: “The coaches agreed we would pay out of our own salary, give us less money to our salary, take whatever it costs to have walk-ons, and we’ll pay for it out of our salary. … That [roster] cap number coming down, eliminating walk-ons, you’re going to see the Florida State situation [in last year’s 63-3 Orange Bowl loss to Georgia]. The move now is people have started to not play in bowl games so they don’t get hurt to go in the portal. And I’m not even saying starters. I’m saying we had players on special teams, backups on defense, offensive teams, like, ‘Why are you not playing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, New Year’s Six bowl?’ And they’re like, ‘We don’t want to risk getting hurt covering a kickoff because we’re going in the portal.’” Kiffin says the coaches were told “the financial aspect has not been a piece at all of this. This is about potential lawsuits down the road. … They can use different terms around it, but they’re getting rid of walk-ons. It’s a major concern.” (link)

EvanMiya.com publisher Evan Miyakawa has conducted a study on the roster construction techniques used over the last several seasons to determine the best strategies for success on high-major men’s basketball teams. Questions considered in the study included: Can you have too many transfers? Is transfer recruitment more critical now than high school recruitment? How valuable are returning players? Do you need freshman talent to be elite? Do you need star players on your roster? Should you prioritize returning players over transfers? Is there a “formula” for roster composition? Broadly speaking, Miyakawa concludes at least 50% of a team’s roster should consist of returning players. As such, coaches should prioritize signing players who will stay for at least two years. In examining all of the 1 seeds from the past three NCAA Tournaments, Miyakawa found that “every team had a preseason roster rank inside the top 30, with 10/12 having top 15 rosters. Almost all of the 1 seeds leaned mostly on returning players, as only two teams had returning players play less than 50% of their team’s minutes (Alabama 22-23 and UNC 23-24).” Meanwhile, the “top 10 teams, on average, had returners play about 60% of the available minutes during the season, while teams that missed the tournament were only at 51%. The reliance on transfers was way lower for top 10 teams, at just 23% of the minutes, compared to 35% for high majors that failed to get a tourney berth. Top 10 teams also took one less transfer in the offseason on average than teams that missed the tournament.” Lots more, including how teams with a minimal amount of returning players and teams who maximized freshman minutes fared.
